Indoor/Outdoor Riser Cable

Description: MSS Indoor/Outdoor Riser Cable

Ordering Information:

ROHS compliant multi fibre Riser cable constructed from 900um PVC tight buffer jacketed fibres, stranded together with aramid yarn and “Dry-Block” water-swellable aramid reinforcing and blocking yarns, typically over sheathed with black UV-resistant LSZH for indoor/outdoor versions. Sheath printing includes length marking at 1 meter intervals. Options include PVC sheath, NHFR sheath, alternative colours, any fibre type and up to 96 fibres.

Application: The outdoor version of this tight buffer riser cable is the preferred selection for direct termination methods linking buildings and used as backbones. It features a “dry” water blocking system to prevent the flow of water along the cable in the event of sheath breech, a UV-resistant LSZH jacket for exposed situations, and it can accommodate all fibre types including different types within the same cable. PVC and NHFR sheathed options are available as are alternative colours. These are ideal for duct and indoor applications. Generally NHFR and non-black materials do not have the same high level of UV resistance as the standard offerings.

ADSS Aerial Cable

Product Details: MSS ADSS Aerial Cable

The MSS ADSS Aerial Cable is designed to be freely suspended between upright supports such as poles, posts and masts. The construction is waterproof in longitudinal direction thanks to the use of jelly-filled bundle conductors and swelling tape. The outer jacket is UV-resistant and at the same time provides protection against environmental influences such as snow, ice, sun isolation and wind. The loose tube design provides stable performance over a wide temperature range and is compatible with any telecommunications-grade optical fibre. ADSS is available in various span lengths and wind loads so contact MSS for further information.

Plastic Fibre

MSS Plastic Optic Fibre

POF (Plastic Optical Fibre), similar to traditional glass fibre, POF transmits light/data through the core of the fibre. However POF assemblies have a core size in some cases 100x that of glass fibre. The increased core diameter allows 96% of the core to transmit signal from point-to-point, making it an ideal material for signal transmission over short distances.

POF assemblies possess special characteristics that make this product an ideal solution for applications which traditional glass fibre products are not well suited. For applications requiring a very tight bend radius, POF products generally bend to 25mm with no excessive attenuation. POF products also have a very wide tolerance for scratching and contamination from the field. This tolerance allows the product to perform at acceptable level despite some compromise in physical condition.

Plastic optical fibre products are typically used in medical, automotive, home networks, digital audio/video interfaces, signs/illumination, instrumentation, and automation.

• Ideal for short distances • Wide tolerance for scratching and

contamination from the field • Tight bend radius • Perfect for audio applications • Low manufacturing cost compared

to glass fibre

Polymer Cladded Fibre

MSS Polymer Clad Fibre Cable:

Polymer clad fibre (PCF) has been on the market for many years, standing out by being very robust and easy to assemble.

PCF consists of a silica core with polymer cladding. PCF is widely used for various applications from cameras to factory automation. Low attenuation makes it possible to cover distances up to 500 metres with systems designed for POF (about 660nm), and up to 4 kilometres with 850 nm systems.

The advantage of the PCF is that they can be used in the wavelength range from 600 to 1300nm contrary to graded index glass fibres. Glass fibres are only appropriate for the wavelengths 850nm and 1310nm.

• Lower Attenuation than Plastic Optic Fibre (POF)

• Easy to Terminate • Low System Cost • Utilizes same transmitters and

receivers as PCF Cable

Benefits/Features:

Description:

The same, cheap transmitters and receivers like for POF can be used for PCF. PCF Cable has higher attenuation values and a lower bandwidth. That’s why you can only transmit over distances up to 500m dependent on the data rate. The assembly of the PCF is cheap, simple and fast, because no glue and polishing is needed. Connectors of glass fibres have to be glued and polished requiring a lot of additional equipment such as crimping tool, stripping tool, curing oven, polishing machine and polishing films. For PCF assembly only a stripping and Cleave tool is required.

Parameter PCF 200/230µm GI glass fibre 50/125µm GI glass fibre 62,5/125µm core diameter [µm] 200 50 62,5 attenuation @650nm [dB/km] 10 / / attenuation @850nm [dB/km] 8 2,5 3,0 attenuation @1310nm [dB/km] ca. 60 0,7 0,8 Bandwidth @650nm [MHzxkm] 17 / / Bandwidth @850nm [MHzxkm] 20 1500 350 Bandwidth @1310nm [MHzxkm] / 500 550 temperature range [°C] -65 to +125 -65 to +85 -65 to +85 min. bending radius longtime [mm] 16 30 30 NA 0,37 0,20 0,275 refractive index profile Stepp index graded index Prooftest [kpsi] ≥150 ≥100 ≥100 time needed for assembly [min] Cleave: 2 glue/ polish: 30 possible connectors HP, ST, SC, SMA, FC ST, SC, SMA, FC, LC

The biggest advantage is the time saving of up to 90%. There are clamp connectors, where you can reuse the connector and repeat the assembly. If a glass fibre connector fails, the connector has to be cut off, and re-terminated. This circumstance demonstrates the advantages of PCF in the field assembly of connectors. The PCF has a higher Core diameter and a bigger acceptance angle so you can pick up more light.

Mode Conditioning Leads

Description: MSS Mode Conditioning Leads

Ordering Information:

Mode conditioning fibre optic patch cords are designed for Gigabit Ethernet multimode applications at 1300nm wavelength; the application standard is IEEE 802.3z. All mode conditioning fibre optic patch cords are made with duplex cable; with a single mode to multimode offset fibre connection part in one of the two legs

The Gigabit Ethernet application standard requires the use of fibre optic light to achieve the specified data transmitting rates. Usually people use long wave transceiver modules for Gigabit Ethernet, these modules have to operate both single mode and multi mode fibres. And as we know, multimode fibre manufacturing techniques create index of refraction anomalies along the centreline of the multi mode fibre core. When a highly concentrated single mode fibre optic light is sent into the centre of a multimode fibreglass, the modes that propagate through the index of refraction anomalies spread out in time causing modal dispersion, this effect is called Differential Mode delay. Differential Mode Delay results in reduced bandwidth over distance. By allowing the single mode laser launch to be offset away from the centre of the multi mode fibre the mode conditioning patch cord reduces the effect of such differential mode delay.

Lightpaths Fibre Optic Ducting

Product Details: Lightpaths fibre optic ducting is a unique system for routing and protecting fibre optic cable between termination equipment, patch panels and fibre optic splicing cabinets or frames in telecommunications exchanges, data centres, universities, hospitals, or anywhere fibre optic cabling is present. Easily mounted above equipment racks or below floors, it provides an easily accessible solution to any situation.

MSS Fibre Optic Ducting

*Contact MSS for all enquires on Fibre Optic Ducting

Lightpaths components simply snap together or can be joined with "slotless" joiners. Vertical drops can be positioned or added easily by adding a cutout in the horizontal duct raceway with a simple to operate hand tool.

Industry standards: • ISO 9001 Certified Quality Management System by NCS International • Fire retardant plastic, Halogen Free, UL94-VO rated • UL2024A standard • EEU - ROHS requirements

Unique Snap together Design:

The unique design of the Lightpaths system protects the fibre from damage and ensures that the bend radius of the cable is not compromised.

All components in the Lightpaths system are manufactured from Noryl, a very strong plastic, which is self extinguishing and halogen free (certified to UL94VO specification) which means in the case of a fire, the gases emitted will not cause harm to personnel, buildings or transmission equipment, unlike some other brands of ducting.

Lightpaths fibre optic ducting products are manufactured to the highest quality standards (ISO9001), complying with the stringent requirements of ULA2024A and ROHS and carry a 5 year warranty.

Troubleshooting Testing

Throughout the maintenance phase, various transmission problems - fibre cuts, damaged/dirty connectors, macrobendings, optical transmitter failure, etc.-may ultimately cause signal loss or degradation. Benefit from the PPM-350B’s troubleshooting functionalities:

• Quick, on-site test and measurement of PON signals, anywhere on the network

• Fault identification and isolation

Groundbreaking Technology:

The PPM-352B acts as a pass-through device, which means that it is connected between the OLT and the ONT. A small percentage of the signal is extracted for use by the power meter's detectors. This approach enables all wavelengths to be used simultaneously. Also, since the PON equipment can keep functioning normally, the ONT continues to operate (to respond to the OLT), and therefore to transmit and have its laser on.

Service Activation Testing

Optimising network reliability requires that all PON signals be measured all the way through service activation to ensure they meet established standards. The PPM-350B offers the features to address this need:

• Pass-through connection for ONT signal measurement and simultaneous measurement

• Filtered detectors for individual measurement of each wavelength

• Upstream burst detection at 1310 nm

Launch Leads

Product Details: A launch lead is designed to aid in the testing of fibre optic cable when using an OTDR. It helps minimise the effects of the OTDR’s launch pulse on measurement uncertainty, ie. The dead zone

Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) can cause measurement errors when the cable under test is plugged directly into the machine. In order to overcome this problem, a fibre optic launch lead is required of sufficient length to compensate for the errors. The OTDR launch lead provides a solution for improving the accuracy in both multimode and singlemode fibre measurements.

MSS Launch Leads

Brief Fibre Optic Overview

Brief Overview of Fibre Optic Cable

An optical fibre is a glass or plastic fibre that carries light along its length. Optical fibres are widely used in fibre optic communication, which permits transmission over longer distances and at higher data rates than other forms of communications. Fibres are used instead of metal wires as signals travel along them faster with less loss. Advantages over Copper:

Speed: Fibre optic networks operate at high speeds - up into the gigabits. Bandwidth: Large carrying capacity. Distance: Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be “refreshed” or strengthened. Resistance: Greater resistance to electromagnetic interferences such as radios, motors or other nearby cables. Maintenance: Fibre optic cables costs much less to maintain. Higher carrying capacity: Because optical fibres are thinner than copper wires, more fibres can be bundled into a given-diameter cable than copper wires. Non-flammable: Because no electricity is passed through optical fibres, there is no fire hazard.

Fibre Optic Overview:

Fibre optic cables have many advantages that cannot be matched via copper or wireless transmission. First- optical fibre can transport more information to much longer distances in less transmission time. This is because fibre has less attenuation (loss) and more bandwidth (capacity). Aside from distance and speed, optical transmission cannot be affected by electromagnetic interferences, making it handy to use in environments where this is a problem. Fibre is also relatively secure since the optical transmission cannot be tapped as easily as electrical transmission.

Singlemode:

Singlemode cable has a typical core diameter of 8.3 to 10um, through which only one mode will propagate typically at 1310 or 1550nm. Carries higher bandwidth than multimode fibre, but requires a light source with a narrow spectral width. Singlemode fibre has a much smaller core than multimode. The small core and single light-wave virtually eliminate any distortion that could result from overlapping light pulses, providing the least signal attenuation and the highest transmission speeds of any fibre cable type.

Single path through the fibre

Multimode:

Multimode cable has a larger core size, with common diameters of 50, 62.5um and (1mm POF). Light waves are dispersed into numerous paths, or modes, as they travel through the cable's core typically at 850 or 1300nm. However, in long cable runs (greater than 3000 feet [914.4 meters), multiple paths of light can cause signal distortion at the receiving end, resulting in an unclear and incomplete data transmission so designers now call for single mode fibre in new applications using Gigabit and beyond.

Industry Standard Colour Codes

1. Blue 2. Orange 3. Green 4. Brown 5. Slate 6. White 7. Red 8. Black 9. Yellow 10. Violet 11. Pink 12. Aqua

Fibre optic cables are terminated using an industry standard colour code. For cables that consist of more than 12 strands of fibre the colours are repeated with some variation eg. the 1st group of 12 strands are solid colours and the 2nd group are solid colours with a stripe or some other identifying mark.

Measuring Optical Loss

Measuring Optical Loss

To calculate the total optical loss (in dB) in a system, add the cable loss, splice loss, and connector loss. Compare the loss figure obtained with the allowable optical loss budget of the receiver. Be certain to add a safety margin factor of at least 3dB to the entire system. If the peak transmitter power is -10dBm and the receiver sensitivity is -30dBm, the available power budget is 20dB. If the total loss is less than 20dB, the loss does not exceed the available budget and therefore O.K. If the total loss is 14dB, the margin or “head room” is 6dB.

Testing for link loss, or attenuation, verifies whether fibre spans meet loss budget requirements. Attenuation includes intrinsic fibre loss, losses associated with connectors and splices, and bending losses due to cabling and installation. An OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflector) is used when a comprehensive accounting of these losses is required. The OTDR sends a laser pulse through each fibre; both directions of the fibre are tested at 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths for singlemode or 850nm and 1300nm for multimode. OTDRs also provide information about fibre uniformity, splice characteristics, and total link distance.

Link Loss (Attenuation)

PMD (Polarisation Mode Dispersion)

PMD has essentially the same effect on the system performance as chromatic dispersion, which causes errors due to the "smearing" of the optical signal. However, PMD has a different origin from chromatic dispersion. PMD occurs when different polarization states propagate through the fibre at slightly different velocities. The causes are fibre core eccentricity, ellipticity, and stresses introduced during the manufacturing process. PMD is a problem for higher bit rates (10 GE and above) and can become a limiting factor when designing optical links.

Chromatic Dispersion

Chromatic dispersion testing is performed to verify that measurements meet your dispersion budget. Chromatic dispersion is the most common form of dispersion found in singlemode fibre. Temporal in nature, chromatic dispersion is related only to the wavelength of the optical signal. For a given fibre type and wavelength, the spectral line width of the transmitter and its bit rate determine the chromatic dispersion tolerance of a system. Portable chromatic dispersion measurement instruments are essential for testing the chromatic dispersion characteristics of installed fibre.

ORL (Optical Return Loss)

ORL is a measure of the total fraction of light reflected by the system. Splices, reflections created at optical connectors, and components can adversely affect the behaviour of laser transmitters, and they all must be kept to a minimum of 24 dB or less. You can use either an OTDR or an LTS equipped with an ORL meter for ORL measurements. However, an ORL meter yields more accurate results.

Description:

Connector Inspection

Fibre Optic Core Inspection

Any contamination in the fibre connection can cause failure of the component or failure of the entire network. Even microscopic dust particles can cause a variety of problems for optical connections. A particle that partially or completely blocks the core generates strong back reflections, which can cause instability in the laser system. Dust particles trapped between two fibre faces can scratch the glass surfaces. Even if a particle is only situated on the cladding or the edge of the end face, it can cause an air gap or misalignment between the fibre cores which significantly degrades the optical signal.

Illustrations: Description:

Shows a clean single mode ceramic end face at 200x magnification.

Shows a connector with scratches through the cladding. These scratches are not detrimental to the end face as the scratches are not across the core.

Shows a connector with liquid contamination that needs cleaning.

Shows a connector with damage to the cladding. Cleaning cannot remove damaged cladding.

A small amount of epoxy around the cladding is allowable, but this shows excessive epoxy around the cladding that does not clean off.

This connector must be replaced or repolished.

Distance Guide

Fibre Optic Distance Guide:

As previously noted, the best fibre to use for an application depends upon a variety of factors including link length, selection of electronics and system scalability requirements. Therefore, the maximum distance capability of the fibre for a given application must be considered. Where fibre is to be added to extend the length or connectivity of legacy fibre links, the added fibre should be of the same core size as the legacy fibre, rather than mixing fibre types.

BROADBAND – A method of communication in which the signal is transmitted by being impressed on a higher-frequency carrier. CHROMATIC DISPERSION – Different wavelengths travel along an optical medium at different speeds. Wavelengths reach the end of the medium at different times, causing the light pulse to spread. This chromatic dispersion is expressed in picoseconds (of dispersion) per kilometre (of length) per nanometre (of source bandwidth). It is the sum of material and waveguide dispersion. CLADDING – The layer of material, usually glass, that immediately surrounds the fibre core. The cladding is usually coated with another material to provide protection when handling.
