Plastic fibres going from

strength to strength.

Fibres for textile and industrial applications have to face ever increasing requirements.

Requirements w

hich in many cases are fulfilled better by industrially m

anufactured, so-called plastic fibres rather than natural fibres due to their specific property profiles. M

ore comfortable to w

ear, easier care, better colouring and a perfect balance between

weight and strength are just som

e of the reasons in favour of the increasing use of plastic fibres not only in textile consum

er goods, hygiene and household products, but also in the building and autom

otive industry. In today‘s cars, for example, around 35

m² of textile m

aterials are already used in 40 applications – ranging from door and side

panels and airbags to headliners. Visible nonwovens account for approx. 10 %

of these.

Capitalising on w

aste as a cost-efficient secondary resource.

The trend towards higher quality fibres, nonw

ovens, tapes and textile fabrics faces in-creasing raw

material prices and m

ore stringent environmental regulations. A

s a result, the use of fibre w

aste as an inexpensive secondary resource is becoming a bigger factor

in terms of efficiency – w

ithout affecting the quality of the end product.

Solution com

petence from the N

umber O

ne.

The challenges when recycling fibre w

aste from production are different to those w

Grow

ing challenges.

The rapidly increasing variety of fibre applications also means a grow

th in the potential of reusable in-house or post-consum

er waste. W

orldwide fibre production in 2011,

for example, reached a new

record figure of 82 million tonnes. A

s in previous years, the grow

th factor was the dem

and for manm

ade fibres and, in particular, for synthetic fibres w

hich climbed to 48 m

illion tonnes in 2011. Polyester products such as PET fila-m

ents and staple fibres account for some three quarters of the dem

and for synthetic fibres – i.e. 39 m

illion tonnes – followed by PA

, PP and PLA fibres.
