MAPPING ELECTROMAGNETIC POLLUTIONSOUTH STREET AND PECK SLIP: LOWER MANHATTAN

The Earth, enveloped in its own electromagnetic field, produces a more or less steady beat essential to the rhythm of life. Through the course of evolution, all living organisms have adapted themselves to this very unique radiation climate; our inner body systems are inseparably interlocked with the electromagnetic conditions of the outer environment. As technology advances, these natural balances are compromised. Since the advent of commercial electricity we have been increasingly surrounded by man-made electromagnetic frequencies generated by our power grid as well as by the higher frequency emissions of radio, television, and cellular telephone devices. Industrialized nations emit so much of this “electromagnetic pollution” that is can be detected by satellites in space. The World Health Organization has published a report which classifies such fields as an “environmental health problem in line with mercury and cadmium poisoning”. Scien-tists are currently working to establish acceptable exposure levels for the various frequencies. For the purposes of this study field strength was classified accord-ing to the precautionary guidelines established by the International institute of Building Biology and Ecology.
