In an exclusive Fiji Times Canada interview Khan said he was glad to be given a chance to showcase his talent in Fiji - the birthplace of his parents and grandparents. “It’s just an awesome feeling, I am excited with the selection,” Khan said. The 20-year old midfielder, Watford defender Adrian Joseph Mariappa, England, Shivan Sami, Australia, Salesh Kumar and Apisolome Turuva, New Zealand are the six overseas-based players in the squad. Khan had a 4-year stint with Wealdton F.C, as an academy player. He is a graduate of Stanmore College in England. He said it would be nice to give back to his parents and grandparents country of birth. “My parents are from Nadi, dad is from Nawicomba, mum from Sabeto, so its good to give them both my little gift of appreciation.” Khan’s first priority is to make the team. He said he is prepared to give it all to impress the Fijian coaching staff to land a spot in the team. “I know of the challengers and stiff competition that lay ahead of me but it’s not something new to me, I have been there before.” Fiji Here We Come! When asked if scorching Fiji heat could pose a threat to his performance, Khan said he would deal with it when he gets to Fiji. ‘It’s all about acclimatizing.” “Vancouver summer heat wave is no less intense than Fiji. I will adapt to the conditions,” Khan added. The first training camp is set for this weekend in Ba.

Fiji has always been known as one of the best places to get married and spend your honeymoon, says an American airline pilot. Captain John Grieff of Alburgh, Vermont in the United States was in the country to marry his sweetheart Jennifer Dove. The couple tied the knot at the Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji resort accompanied by close

family and friends. When asked why they chose Fiji as their wedding destination, Captain Grieff said they wanted to get married in a paradise where the people were friendly and who treated them like family as well. Captain Grieff is a pilot for Southwest Airlines while his wife was a flight attendant. “We met three years ago,” he said. The wedding was attended by the couple’s parents, family members and friends. “The main reason why we wanted to tie the knot was that we shared something other people do not share, and that is a great sense of humour and mutual respect for

each other,” he said. Mrs Grieff says her husband has an easy going attitude and loves to learn new things, apart from his great sense of humour. Captain John said he loved Jennifer’s sense of humour, her love for cooking and passion for flying. Ms Grieff says being with her husband means when the going gets tough he is always there for her in whatever capacity. “Whether he is there holding my hands quietly or standing there and fighting for me,” she said. Captain John loves to spend his time flying seaplanes in Vermont and working on airplanes.

THE national men’s soccer side is likely to tour Canada and United States of America in the build-up to the 2011 Pacific Games.Fiji last played international matches in 2008. This was part of the playoffs for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.Fiji Football Association president Doctor Shamsud-Dean Sahu Khan said both the Canada and United States Fiji Soccer Associations have agreed to help them in the Pacific Games preparations. He said there was a proposal for a tour to both countries.“Both the Fiji soccer associations in Canada and the United States will have a meeting to discuss how they could help us

for the build up to the Pacific Games,” Dr Sahu Khan said.“There is a proposal for a tour with the two associations sharing the cost. They have agreed to pay for our accommodation. But we need some assistance for travel as well.”The Pacific Games in Noumea will serve as the first stage qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The top four teams from the Pacific Games would qualify for the second stage which will include New Zealand. This will be played on a home and away basis.Dr Sahu Khan said they had set the time frame for international matches.

“Any international matches will have to be played after the Champions League which starts in January,” the Ba lawyer said.“The international matches could be between mid February to mid May. We are also negotiating with clubs in Australia. Our Fiji Association’s in Canada and America have offered to help.“We have already written to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and India for international fixtures.”Dr Sahu Khan revealed that they had turned down offers for international matches with countries from the African continent. He said hosting those teams was very expensive.

“Two countries from Africa want to come to Fiji,” Dr Sahu Khan said.“But they want 50,000 euros ($F119,115) as playing fee. Plus we will have to pay for their accommodation, travel and meals here. They want to stay for two weeks. We cant afford all that and have rejected that offer. The budget for the Pacific Games will be drawn up after the first camp. We hope to do that by January 20.”The national training squad marched into camp in Ba on January 6.The Pacific Games will be held from August 28 to September 12. Fiji lost to New Caledonia 1-0 in the final of the 2007 South Pacific Games in Samoa.

All tobacco retailers, manufacturers and importers including suki (dried tobacco leaves) vendors must now be registered before April 30, 2011. “All retail outlets involved in the sale of tobacco will have to be registered beginning on April 30, 2011,” health ministry’s spokesman Peni Namotu said. “They need to present a valid business licence and their TIN number to register as a legal

tobacco sales outlet.” The annual licence and fee will cost $200. The Ministry says that the Tobacco Control Decree 2010, approved by Cabinet recently, is an amendment that included clauses left out in the Tobacco Control Act 1998. The Decree restricts advertising, sponsorship, and promotion of tobacco products. It regulates the labeling of tobacco product containers, restricts the nicotine and tar content of cigarettes and bans the sale of

cigarettes to persons under the age of 18. “There will be spot fine of $1000 for anybody breaching the latter,” Mr Namotu said. “The Decree also restricts the smoking and selling of cigarettes in certain public places including bus stations and internet shops, promotes the mandatory registration of wholesalers, retailers, and distributors of tobacco products in Fiji, and the licensing of tobacco manufacturers, importers, including suki vendors to prevent

illicit trade in all tobacco products. “Registering all tobacco retailers will provide the Government a reasonably accurate and up-to-date database of all venues that sell tobacco products,” he said. Authorized officers will be stationed throughout Fiji to ensure that the provisions of the Decree are followed. The grace period will last for six months from August.

A group of Chinese home designers are expected to be in the country this month to work on the Raiwai, Raiwaqa housing flats. Public Rental Board general manager Mesake Senibulu met the contractor - China Railway First Group on Tuesday and discussed submissions of the conceptual designs. Mr Senibulu said the board helped the designers in the layout of one bedroom and two bedroom flats and with the flat layout on site. “They are to come up with some finalised conceptual designs for the Board’s consideration,” Mr Senibulu said. “We have discussed the planning stages and time frames and I have advised them to

consider bringing to Fiji their design team for a quick turnaround time. This will help when we go into the final design stage.” The contractor considered the Board’s submission because it was the most practicable solution to their work. Construction is set to begin later this year once the plans are approved. “We will need to work hand in hand with the planning authorities to ensure that plans are approved in a timely manner,” Mr Senibulu said. “In the meantime, we are satisfied with what we have seen so far, however, the contractor will need to see that their work is not delayed.” More than 192 families are expected to benefit from the development.

Pharmacies in Fiji will face deregistration of their businesses if they continue to undergo unfair trade practices says Health minister Dr. Neil Sharma.Dr. Sharma made this comment in light of recent findings of a survey conducted by the Consumer Council which found that certain pharmacies were over charging consumers for prescription drugs. The survey found that some pharmacies

sold the same medicines (brand, dosage and batch number) at different prices. In a joint press conference with Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Dr. Sharma said pharmacies needed to acknowledge that they have conducting unfair trade practices.“There have been breaches and unfair trade practices by the pharmaceutical sector and those compliance agencies have not been vigilant,” said Dr. Sharma.Sayed-Khaiyum reiterated Sharma’s concerns adding that it is now up to the Pharmaceutical Society to apply more strict laws and rules to ensure that drug pharmacies do not continue with these unlawful acts.“When businesses operate they need to operate under the law,” added Sayed-Khaiyum.

THE proposed establishment of a lifeguard academy in Fiji has been hailed a significant step towards the reduction of the national drowning toll.Ian Ravouvou Muller of Fijian Surf Company believes that the Government should invest in a lifeguard academy because professionals in such organisations can and do save lives. The national drowning toll last year was 51 and so far this year, two people have drowned.“We need to seriously look at tackling this problem now and not leave it till later,” Mr. Muller said.“Lifeguards are an asset to a country; they are not just needed around water but anywhere in the community, as they have

basic life saving skills.“Setting up a lifeguard academy for Fiji and the region would be the first step in combating our problem of high drowning.”He said early last year they did a course in which 10 locals were trained by the Australian Professional Ocean Lifeguards Association (APOLA) Volunteer.“We are trying to do this on an annual basis down the beach near Sonaisali with APOLA and the Fijian Water Patrol,” he said.Mr. Muller said the lifeguard academy could complement existing organisations like the Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji or tertiary institutions.“APLOA is willing to send down their

professionals to help set us up by adopting their constitution, tweaking it to Fiji standards, train locals with accreditation and start saving lives,” he said.“For resorts and areas that have pools and beaches, their Occupational Health and Safety (policies) may need to change to include lifeguards on duty.“This would make patrons feel safe and will provide additional work”.Mr. Muller is the first Fijian lifeguard trained in Australia by APOLA. He is presently conducting small courses locally.“We are doing our part around beaches, surf and oceans but we are only a small operation that volunteers our service to Fiji,” he said.

The Fiji Police Force has achieved the Police Commissioner’s intent in trying to eradicate crime all over the country during the December 2010 to January 2011 festive season.

However, the concern will be focused on the burglary rate, which has escalated to an annoying 84 per cent compared to the December 2009 to January 2010 period. All the other areas which have been of concern in the past have improved with a reduced percentage of the offences committed. “This is only possible through the co-ordination of the force and the local population throughout this busy period,” police spokesman Atunaisa Sokomuri said.

There has been a considerable improvement in most areas. Defilement has dropped from 50 for the same period last year to only five during this season. The Police Department also revealed an extraordinary illustration of the statistics and Inspector Sokomuri has confirmed that it will be a platform from which they will have to improve their future operations. The decrease of 39 per cent for serious and prevalent offences is not only sweet victory for the force but for the country as a whole.

DALO farmers on Taveuni have praised the Government for its farming assistance programs which have eased the financial burdens of many. The farmers received free chemicals and dalo tops for their farms.Dalo farmer and agent James Sami of Qila said more farmers had joined the dalo industry as a result of the help from Government.“Other Governments had not done this.

Farmers had to buy their own chemicals from pesticides to fertilisers and dalo tops,” Mr Sami said.“Not many farmers easily jumped into dalo farming because of the expenses involved.”He said all that had changed after Government provided free assistance.Mr Sami said the assistance attracted many dalo farmers and resulted in a plentiful supply of dalo to local export agents.

“This is the first Government to help us. We are grateful to the Ministry of Agriculture for their help,” Mr Sami said.He said the chemicals and dalo tops were given to the village headmen and farming groups. Those were later distributed to farmers.“It’s a good move. It helped ease the problem of unemployment and a lot of school leavers have also joined the farming industry.”

Fiji will soon be endorsed as a member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). Minster for Foreign Affairs Ratu Inoke Kubuabola told the media that their quest to become a member has been accepted by the Ministerial Chair of the movement. The movement is an intergovernmental organisation of states considering themselves not aligned formally with or against any major power bloc. It is made up of 118 developing countries and aims to represent the political, economic and cultural interests of the developing world. In a ceremony at the Egyptian Mission to the United Nations in New York, Ratu Inoke

said that a letter was delivered to him from the Ministerial Chair of NAM, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Arab Republic of Egypt Ahmed Aboul Gheit. “The letter advises the Fiji Government that the NAM Co-ordination Bureau has endorsed Fiji’s application to become a full member of NAM,” Ratu Inoke said. He said in the letter Mr Gheit congratulated Fiji on the endorsement. Mr Gheit also expressed his wish to meet Ratu Inoke in person at the next NAM Conference to be held in Indonesia from May 23-27 at which Fiji will be formally welcomed as the 119th member of the movement.

The NAM Co-ordination Bureau meets at the United Nations in New York and is chaired by the Permanent Representative of the country that is the current chair of NAM. The present Chair of NAM is Egypt. Fiji’s and Egypt’s Permanent Representatives to the UN met in New York to effect delivery of the Ministerial letter and to discuss forthcoming NAM issues and procedures. The organisation was founded in Belgrade in 1961, and was largely the brainchild of Yugoslavia’s first President Josip Broz Tito, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Egypt’s second President Gamal Abdel Nasser and Indonesia’s first President Sukarno. All four leaders were prominent advocates

of a middle course for states in the developing world between the Western and Eastern blocs in the Cold War. The purpose of the organisation as stated in the Havana Declaration of 1979 is to ensure “the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries” in their “struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics”. They represent nearly two-thirds of the United Nations’ members and 55 per cent of the world population, particularly countries considered to be developing or part of the Third World.

Good news for pregnant mothers as the Ministry of Health is planning to provide them with food vouchers. The Minister for Health Doctor Neil Sharma revealed that the ministry is working out ways to provide food vouchers for pregnant mothers who live below the poverty line. Dr Sharma said this initiative of the Health Ministry enabled pregnant mothers to support their health and at the same time their babies. Dr Sharma said the new initiative aimed to get pregnant mothers to come for early bookings at their nearest hospitals so that their pregnancy progress was well taken care of. “This effort of the ministry will also

enable mothers to give birth to healthy babies and will help the ministry reduce the rate of babies dying per year,” Dr Sharma said. Dr Sharma revealed that out of 18,000 babies born in the country last year there were six per cent deaths. “To decrease the number of babies dying per year, the food voucher programme for pregnant mothers will assist the Health Ministry to achieve its targets for this year,” Dr Sharma said. Meanwhile, Dr Sharma said the ministry has purchased 22 ultrasound machines which will help the ministry diagnose pregnant mothers and pick up abnormalities in the baby earlier.

loNger oPeNiNg Hours For Bdm registry ANNouNCed By Ag

AustrAliAN sCHolArsHiP uPsCAle PleAses miNister

The Attorney General and Minister for Justice Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has announced that in order to assist members of the public in particular parents and guardians, the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) Offices in Suva, Lautoka and Labasa will extend its opening hours throughout the month of January.

From Monday January 10, 2011 to Friday January 28, 2011, the opening hours for Suva and Lautoka offices will be from 8.00am to 7.00pm during working days, and the opening hours for the Labasa office will be from 8.00am to 6.00pm during working days. The registries will remain open during the lunch hour also.In addition, the BDM Offices in Suva,

Lautoka and Labasa will be open to members of the public on four Saturdays (January 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2011) from 9.00am to 1.00pm.“The decision to extend the Registry’s opening hours is to give parents and guardians lot more flexibility in accessing the BDM office. This is part of government’s initiative to provide

improved services to all Fijians,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. The Minister is urging the members of the public to make use of these extended hours of service. He has also reminded the people that they can obtain extracts of Birth Certificates at any of the Post Fiji outlets throughout the country.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation Ratu Inoke Kubuabola expressed his appreciation for Australia’s decision to increase the number of Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) to Fiji from 20 to 40 awards (24 Postgraduate and 16 Undergraduate) for the 2011 intake.Education and training are fundamental building blocks for economic and human development. They open up opportunities for employment and economic activities otherwise not possible, and provide both the incentive and necessary skills for economic progress. Furthermore, they deliver benefits downstream in health, governance, productivity, gender equality and nation-

building. “I am therefore pleased with the Australian Government’s decision to upscale its scholarship award to Fiji because this will help us overcome some of our impediments to higher education and improve education and training opportunities for our people.” Ratu Inoke said. “I am hopeful, however that Australia can further increase the number of awards in the next five years given their acknowledgement, that the latest increase is due to the high success rate amongst our candidates and their contributions on their return to Fiji and the high demand and quality of our candidates.” In 2009 there were 27 Fijian recipients of Australian Regional Development

Scholarships, who graduated with qualifications in health, agriculture, engineering, environment, business and governance. In 2010 a further 10 Fijian recipients of Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) attained qualifications in health, governance, engineering and agriculture. During 2005-2009 Fijian scholarship recipients had a 96 per cent academic success rate, and a 2008 study showed that ADS alumni were broadly contributing to economic growth, with 85 per cent of respondents employed—the majority in our public service.“With such a high return on investment I am hopeful that Australia can further increase scholarship awards for Fiji in the next five years,” Ratu Inoke said.

The Australian Government in its 2009–10 Budget Statement acknowledged the growing importance of education when it said: “Education is a flagship sector of Australia’s increased aid program and will become the program’s largest sector with support extending from basic education to technical and vocational skills training and improving tertiary level qualifications.” “A recent report issued by the Australian Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade References Committee observed that the Australian scholarships program was set to double in size over five years to 19,000 scholarships for the Asia–Pacific region. I am hopeful Fiji will again be able to benefit from this increased largesse,” the minister said.

There is a story repeated all over Fiji. An Australian family visits and is overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome extended to them, and especially their children. They are so charmed by the locals, and so relaxed by the island paradise, they return year after year. The story went a chapter further with Jay Whyte, an Australian who first visited Fiji in 1991 and returned in 2006 with a dream. As a youngster, Whyte had been

Politicians, relatives, families and friends of the Fa family paid their last respects at the Tamavua Seventh-day Adventist Church for prominent lawyer Tevita Fa at

his funeral service. The late Mr Fa was a prominent local lawyer and an influential figure in city politics. He was later laid to rest at the Suva Cemetery. Family and friends recalled the late lawyer, who died last week aged 65, as a kind and generous person with a keen wit and a disarming sense of humour. “He had that typical Tongan and Lau wit and he was a wonderful story teller,” former Cabinet minister Poseci Bune said. “He was the kind of guy that other people liked to be around, so he drew a crowd. I think he was popular everywhere he went.” An active figure in State and local politics, his memorial service drew political figures, including the Head of State President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. “He was a great guy who did a lot of things quietly behind the scenes for a lot of people in this town,” said Hasmukh Patel, a former Suva lawyer who is now a Senior

Court Barrister in New Zealand. Mr Patel described Mr Fa as a close friend from childhood. “I think he always wanted to be behind the scenes, but if people needed help, he was always there to help somebody out,” he said. “He was the point man. He made that happen, Fiji has lost a great son who should be remembered for his bravery and his death is deeply felt.” His brother, Isireli Fa, a lawyer who shared a practice with him for more than 10 years, recalled him as “very generous with his money and time”. The younger Mr Fa said he and his late brother’s divergent political views often led to spirited debates whenever they got together. “He was just a really good guy,” said Suva lawyer Qoriniasi Bale, who was Attorney-General during the Qarase government and who came to know Fa well over the

years. “He was a happy-go-lucky person; the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back for anybody that was a friend,” he said. Tevita Fa died at the Suva Private Hospital on December 30 after a long battle with illness. His brother said he was admitted in November after a mild stroke and was also diabetic. “My family, my mum, we are all proud of Tevita , of his life. He always achieved what he set out to do,” he said. “He lived a happy life and a full life.” Mr Fa studied at Queen Victoria School. He had some prominent clients in his lifetime, including former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and businessman Ballu Khan. Tevita Fa is survived by his wife Ana Fa, sons Sione, Finau, Taunivalu and daughters Kava and Akanesi.

introduced to the “real Fiji” when a new-found friend, Pita, took him home to his village of Draiba. As an adult he returned, determined to give other tourists a hands-on introduction to Fijian culture, combined with the fun of jet boating, which he had tried and loved in New Zealand. The result is the hugely popular Sigatoka River Safaris.

It’s an overcast morning when we are picked up from Denarau’s Westin Resort and Spa, but this only makes the drive through the Sigatoka Valley to the launch spot more magical. Known as Fiji’s “salad bowl”, the valley’s precious plantings of corn and cassava, and its ancient, mossy mahogany trees are shrouded in mist. At the jetty we meet our cheeky guide Josh Ratukuna - who prefers “Captain Jack” - and soon the tranquility is shattered.

Captain Jack has us hurtling towards our destination, Vunarewa village, at a pace that makes even our designated “chief” for the day - a softly spoken, 65-year-old English doctor - shriek in delight. In between Jack’s sharp turns and 360-spins, he does slow down at times to give his passengers a colourful potted history of Fiji, the river and its people. It’s a short clamber up the riverbank to Vunarewa, where we don sulus (sarongs) for a tour of the village and a traditional kava ceremony. The women then carefully lay out a delicious lunch of tropical fruits such as pineapple and breadfruit, a local spinach and chicken, which is worked off with traditional dancing. Meanwhile, back on Denarau Island, a distinctly Australian flavour is developing. Guests of the Westin Resort and Spa and the Sheraton Hotel have been quick to embrace two Aussie restaurants that have opened their homes away from

home in the resort hot spot. The Westin is now home to Moo Moo: The Wine Bar and Grill, which is ordinarily based in Brisbane and the Gold Coast. This incarnation has a Fijian feel, but the idea is the same - it’s anything but your typical steakhouse. The specialty is a one-kilogram, spice-rubbed Wagyu rump, sliced at the table and shared between two, three or four diners. It’s served with a variety of sides, most notably a delicious pear, parmesan and rocket salad, and positively melts in your mouth. Foodies are also flocking to Flying Fish at the Sheraton, for renowned Sydney chef Peter Kuruvita’s signature Sri Lankan curry, starring plump king prawns. As you would expect, the restaurant is every bit as good as the one-hat headquarters in Pyrmont - and maybe even better as you dine at a table by the sea, with your feet tucked into the soft white sand.

An Australian tourist, who is on a honeymoon in Fiji, was fined $200 by the Magistrates Court in Suva after pleading guilty to an assault. Police Prosecutor Luke Qerewaqa told the court that Thomas McDowell was invited for a drink by a Solomon Island student at a prominent nightclub in Suva on January 3. In the nightclub McDowell got angry

and allegedly punched his friend on the neck. The incident was reported at the Totogo Police Station, Suva, and McDowell was apprehended on the same night. He appeared before Magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe. In mitigation, McDowell said he was sorry and that he needed a lenient sentence because he was in Fiji on a honeymoon.

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation says there are no plans to compensate growers for their unharvested crop. This was confirmed by FSC spokesman Samu Railoa.Earlier the National Farmers Union had stated it would seek compensation to help make up for the farmers’ loss as a result of standover cane. However, Mr Railoa said: “There are no plans to compensate growers for their unharvested crop as the crop will still be available for crushing in the 2011 season”.Union president Surendra Lal said the growers needed to be compensated to pay for land rent and fertiliser.

“FSC’s refusal to compensate the growers is disheartening,” he said.“The FSC is insensitive towards the plight of the growers because they are not taking the monetary part of it.“We, the growers, are on the losing side because all unharvested cane will be lost.”Mr Lal added that harvesting has stopped and that the quality of cane would also deteriorate.“The growers were seeking compensation because many of them had burnt cane in fields for crushing following advice by FSC officials.“Now the burnt cane will have no value.”

CONCERNS have been raised that increased activities for cruise passengers have resulted in a drop in handicraft sales.Suva Handicraft Market Vendors and Manufacturers Association president Mahendra Singh said they were struggling to pay stall fees. His comments follows the visit by P&O cruise liner Pacific Dawn at the King’s Wharf.“We have been around for 51 years promoting tourism and building the economy,” he said.“I must commend the authorities for all they have done to ensure tourists enjoy themselves.“However, the vendors have been deprived

because most of the tourists are booked for sightseeing tours.”Mr Singh said while the association did not have a problem with tour operators, they believed tourists should be given a chance to look at the capital city, where a lot of resources were utilised for beautification and security.“Our sales have dropped and tourists are being told not to buy artifacts and baskets,” he said.“But these items they are discouraged from buying can be taken by other tourists leaving the country via plane.“The drop in sales has been happening for some time.“We depend on tourists and now we can hardly pay our stall fees.”

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation has refuted claims by the National Farmers Union that more than 80,000 tonnes of cane remain standing in Northern cane fields.FSC spokesman Samu Railoa said the standover cane was less than half the amount claimed by the union.“The initial estimate of standover crop in the Labasa mill area is close to 30,000 tonnes of cane,” Mr Railoa said.“Field officers are carrying out a survey in the field to verify the figure.”Mr Railoa said that the standover figure in 2009 was close to 10,000 tonnes.

He added that the value of sugar produced from standover cane would deteriorate.“The value of sugar will deteriorate because of climate change and age and the worth will certainly not be what it was in June and July.”However, union president Surendra Lal remains steadfast that the union’s estimated of 80,000 tonnes of standing case is sound.“The 80,000 tonnes of cane is worth $3.6million, provided the forecast price of $45 per tonne,” Mr Lal said.“This is a huge loss to the farmers and to the FSC.”

A Chinese vessel carrying $4.1 million worth of construction and civil engineering equipment and tools has arrived in Fiji.Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the equipment and tools will be managed by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Engineers.“ It will be deployed by the RFMF engineers to further drive and enhance our rural development programmes and projects throughout the country,” Commodore Bainimarama said. The Deputy Secretary Development Cooperation and Facilitation in the Prime Minister’s office, Eliki Bomani said the shipment is part of the Government of the Peoples Republic of China’s direct aid grant project to Fiji.

“There are a number of such projects like the Somosomo hydro in Taveuni and the Navua hospital development,” Mr Bomani said. The equipment was taken to the army engineers – it’s really for the rural development programs. The equipment includes machinery like graders, loaders and trucks.“The Prime Minister is really keen on expanding rural development and on quickening the pace of rural development for the rural population so this is really part of the assistance,” he said. “The equipment is subject to deployment throughout Fiji wherever the need is identified, wherever development projects are being carried out in the rural areas.”

new poliCe Commissioner signs ContrACt

The New Zealand Police Dive squad has located the body of a 27-year-old Fijian who was reported to have been in trouble off the Wellington coast near Seatoun Monday afternoon.Anare Roqica Nayacatoga is reported to have been living in New Zealand for almost 3 years. His teammates were expecting to spend the summer with him on the rugby field but instead, found themselves carrying his body from the unforgiving waters of Wellington’s south coast. As black-clad police divers stood silently, hands clasped, on the water’s edge, wailing family members followed the body as it was carried up the rocky beach and into the back of the waiting white hearse, bringing an end to a night of uncertainty.Searchers had spent the previous night and several hours searching for the body of the 27-year-old rugby sevens enthusiast, who drowned while diving for mussels with his cousin Dan Raikabula and another friend at Seatoun’s Steeple Rock.Police say Nayacatoga, who played for Porirua’s Pacific Warriors sevens team, got cramp in the choppy sea while swimming in strong currents from one rock to another.Pacific Warriors team manager Jone Salauneune said Nayacatoga had called out Raikabula for help, but then said he was all right. When Raikabula reached the rock, he turned to find his cousin and team-mate had disappeared.

“Most probably he didn’t fully recover ... from muscle cramps.”Raikabula and the friend returned to shore and called for help, prompting the search involving police divers and the Westpac rescue helicopter. Nayacatoga’s body was found about 9.30am.Team-mates in the Pacific Warriors – started by a group of young Fijian men last year and coached by New Zealand Sevens star Lote Raikabula, Nayacatoga’s cousin – were devastated. The team would stay together and be motivated by the tragedy, he said. “It will be definitely what Anare would like – for the team to get stronger and stronger.”Mr Salauneune said his former team member was “a quiet guy”.“You hardly get things out of Anare’s mouth unless you are desperate.”Christian Mission Fellowship pastor Malakai Tawakilai said Mr Nayacatoga was a good guy.He had lived in New Zealand for about three years and did not work, but helped out around his family’s home, he said.Dan Raikabula was struggling with the loss, he said. “He’s coping with it but not really because he’s the one who tried to rescue him.”Although Mr Nayacatoga could swim, he was on his first mussel dive and was not used to the cold water and strong currents in Wellington. His body will be returned to Fiji at the request of Mr Nayacatoga’s parents.Mr Tawakilai said they would also hold a service for him in Tawa.Sergeant James Patrick said he had spoken to the family. “They were quite shattered. He was an outstanding son.”They had wanted to pass on their thanks to all the people who searched for their son. “They were very appreciative of their efforts.”

TAVUA will be the first town in Fiji to make the most of sunshine by going solar this March.Special administrator Arun Prasad said the project would be a joint venture between the council and the Government.“This pilot project will be a highlight of this year’s developments,” he said.“We are planning to complete this project by the end of the first quarter.”Mr Prasad said Tavua would be different from other towns with the installation of new solar streetlights. He said the council would also construct a $100,000 multi-purpose court.“We have just completed levelling the surface and construction will start soon,” said Mr Prasad.“The new court will be used for sporting activities and other community functions.

“We want to lift the image of the town.”Mr Prasad said the council had focused on road maintenance as another main project this year.He said the cost of the projected budgeted for the year was $1.2million.“The road conditions in Tavua were not good last year and we want to improve them because we have been receiving many complaints from ratepayers.“We have surveyed the areas that need to be repaired and work will start soon.”Mr Prasad said the council would also beautify the town by planting trees and putting up road signs.“The economy of Tavua is slowly regaining and we’re optimistic many investors will set up new businesses once all the development is in place,” he said.

Fiji’s new Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua says he has so far received tremendous support from members of the Police Force and other stakeholders.

This he confirmed at the signing of his contract at the Public Service Commission.Naivalurua’s contract was effective from September 15, 2010 and runs until September 14, 2013.“The government is grateful to have a highly motivated, experienced and dedicated officer such as Brigadier General Naivalurua assume the role of commissioner for Police,” said Josefa Serulagilagi chairman of the PSC.“I am pleased that Brigadier General Naivalurua perfectly meets the requirements with his 31 years of service in the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and in the last four years the excellent work he did in the Fiji Prisons and Correctional Services,” he added.Serulagilagi also acknowledged the close collaboration which PSC and the Police have had in the recent past and hopes that this will continue as it benefits both parties.

Tourism Fiji is now targeting the Indian tourism market.Chairman Patrick Wong said that the specialist program is to get travel agents in India familiar with what Fiji has to offer and this is a totally new market.Wong said the Fiji Matai specialist program is targeted at India as it is an emerging market and as a result Tourism Fiji is adopting a new strategy where they will be meeting the travel agents in India on a one-on-one basis.Wong added that this time around, Tourism Fiji is going offline where they are meeting up with the agents and will be working on

getting these agents to come over to Fiji.Director Global Destinations in India Pranav Kapadia said there is a push for Indian people to seek destinations like Fiji with Fiji recording a 30 percent growth in tourist arrivals from India for last year alone. The Matai program will see 10 local suppliers hold workshops in Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai from January 31 - February 3.The delegation is expected to be led by Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum, and also include Tourism Fiji CEO Josefa Tuamoto.

330 cattle and 20 bulls will soon arrive into the country following the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the Agriculture Ministry and Challenge Life Stock New Zealand Limited. Agriculture Permanent Secretary Col Mason Smith says the purchasing of the cattle is in line with government’s desire to reduce our import bill on dairy products and beef. “As you all know government policies is to reduce the importation of food stuff from

overseas . One of the fundamental areas that we are striving for is beef sufficiency in the dairy and beef industry. Plans were laid last year for the importation of the livestock.” He says the government spent approximately $1.3 milion on this project which includes the upgrading of the Koronivia Research Station to accommodate the livestock. The imported cattle and bulls will replace those that died of Brusellosis and flooding last year.

Fiji Retailers Association president, Himmat Lodhia has welcomed government’s decision to remove VAT on school stationary until February 28th.In a statement, Lodhia said the zero rating on school stationary is a good move as it

will assist the many borderline families which are not able to afford many back to school items for their children.“The parents will also have more spare change to buy other goods which would have been difficult to purchase with the new VAT at 15%.” he said He also thanked Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama for intervening and bringing relief to the parents of school children.“We advise the parents to shop around to ensure best value for their money and to shop at places where the zero VAT has the maximum impact.” The businessman said.

Social Welfare recipients around the country have started to receive their Westpac Handy Cards. All the recipients under the family assistance programme received a set of Westpac Handy Cards, pin numbers and instruction manuals that guide people how to use ATM machines. About 17,000 recipients under the Social Welfare Scheme will be able to access their bank accounts and withdraw money using the cards. The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Social Welfare, Govind Sami said the usage of bank accounts would enable family

assistance recipients to save their money. Mr Sami said the recipients won’t be charged any service fees and would be allowed to carry out 10 fee-free withdrawals per month. One of the recipients, Roshni Devi said the implementation of the electronic banking system was good. “In previous years, we had to line up at post offices to get our money but now we can withdraw from anywhere at any time with ease.” Mrs Devi said. The recipients under the family assistance programme receive $60 for family assistance and $30 for food.

A HIDDEN bomb killed a Canterbury-based soldier with “the heart of a lion” in Afghanistan on New Year’s Day. Private Joseva Vatubua, 24, from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, died whilst on operation in Helmand when explosives hidden in a compound wall detonated. The Fijian infantryman had been targeting enemy positions north of Saidabad Kalay in the Nahr-e Saraj district with the 5 Scots Battalion. Company Sergeant Major David McGrath said: “Pte Joseva Vatubua was a large figure of a man who was as strong as an ox. He had the heart of a lion and was nerveless in the face of enemy action.”Pte Vatubua grew up in Fiji and joined the British army in 2007. He had hoped to rise through the ranks. He had a wife, Claudette.

Lt Col Adam Griffiths, the regiment’s commanding officer, said: “The Argylls have lost a loyal, well loved and respected young soldier.“Pte Joseva Vatubua, known to everyone as “Big Joe”, approached everything he did with an infectious sense of humour and a commitment that much of society would do well to emulate.“Fearless in battle, while empathetic to the predicament of Afghanistan, he was at his best on operations, demonstrating a real awareness and understanding of what he was being asked to do.“It was always a wonderful sight to see this mountain of a man surrounded by children when on patrol.“Pte Joseva Vatubua was a strong and brave young soldier. We have lost a truly marvellous young man.”And Lt Col Andrew Harrison MBE, commanding officer of the battle group, said; “Pte Vatubua was a proud, adopted Jock and a warrior of fearsome repute.“His scale was colossal; he dominated the front row, dwarfed his machine gun and delivered fiery, martial passion in abundance.“But for most of the time he was understated, calm and simply kind. He was the epitome of generosity, a loved and revered husband, father and friend. We will never forget him.”

The Governments of Fiji and the Peoples Republic of China have signed a new Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement valued at $8million. In signing the aid agreement with His Excellency the Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China Dr Han Zhiqiang, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama applauded the Chinese support in helping develop Fiji.“This morning we have just signed a new agreement on further technical and economic cooperation between our two countries,” he said.Under the agreement, the Chinese Government will be standing ready to provide Fiji with gratuitous aid to the value of 30 million RMB Yuan or just over 8.38 million Fijian dollars.“Details of account procedures and disbursement will be concluded under this agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the China Development Bank,” Commodore Bainimarama said.“But, as in previous technical and economic agreements between our two countries, this agreement essentially provides for the funding

and implementation of development projects in Fiji that are mutually agreed to by our respective Governments.“Your Excellency, we do look forward therefore to working with your officials in identifying and proposing suitable projects for implementation under this agreement.“May I take this opportunity Your Excellency, to thank you and your Embassy for a good year of achievement and progress between our two countries.“It has been a rewarding and productive year that has greatly enhanced the spirit of mutual cooperation and respect between Fiji and China.”Commodore Bainimarama said 2010 has been a rewarding year in as far as the diplomatic relationship between the two countries is concerned.“ This has been a special year in the relationship between our two countries marking the 35th anniversary of our formal diplomatic relations,” he said.“ During this time China has on numerous occasions demonstrated its close and friendly ties with Fiji in real and practical terms.”

Items sold in shops and supermarkets across the country will now be monitored for food labeling. The Ministry of Health will visit shops and supermarkets to check that food items with foreign language labels are not sold to the public. This was confirmed by the ministry’s spokesman Peni Namotu. “Shops have been advised to remove any foreign language labeled food products from their shelves,” Mr Namotu said. “There are still some shops found selling the products despite the warnings.” Mr Namotu said food items with foreign language labels did not comply with the Food Safety Regulations and the items would be confiscated. The regulations came into effect on June 5, last year. Food producers, wholesalers and retailers were given until October 14 to fully comply with the regulations. “Retailers or importers who fail to comply

will have their products confiscated and disposed of. Legal action will also be taken against them,” Mr Namotu said. The Ministry had ordered the removal of all food products with labels in a foreign language because consumers were unable to read the ingredients and expiry date. The Ministry claims that foreign language labels can be found on food items that consumers can afford to buy. These products include noodles, sweets, biscuits, and soft drinks among others. The Ministry believes that the distribution of such items will not be a problem if border control is tightened. In April 2010, the Government said at the Pacific Food Summit in Port Vila and Vanuatu, that it would strengthen food control systems and enforce relevant regulations that would effectively and efficiently control the safety and quality of imported food and agricultural products.

A Southern California woman has sued the FIJI Water company in a class action complaint that alleges the firm’s claim of having a carbon-negative product amounts to false and misleading advertising that sways consumers to buy the pricey bottled water. The law firm Newport Trial Group filed the suit on December 20 in the US District Court in Santa Ana on behalf of Southern California resident Desiree Worthington, who is described as having purchased FIJI Water repeatedly in the past four years -- a period that roughly coincides with the start of FIJI Water’s carbon-negative marketing campaign. FIJI Water announced the campaign in November 2007 as part of a broader plan to make the bottling, packaging and transportation of the product more environmentally responsible. The initiative followed an onslaught of criticism of the bottled water industry. An article in Fast Company earlier that year noted: “And in Fiji, a state-of-the-art factory spins out more than a million bottles a day of the hippest bottled water on the US market today, while more than half the people in Fiji do not have safe, reliable drinking water. Which means it is easier for the typical American in Beverly Hills or Baltimore to get a drink of safe, pure, refreshing FIJI Water than it is for most people in Fiji.” On its site, FIJI Water says: “Since 2008, FIJI Water has been a carbon-negative brand. We are the first and only major bottled water company to make this commitment, under which we will continue to offset 120 per cent of our emissions. That means that we are not only mitigating our environmental impact but also making up for a little bit of someone else’s.” The method FIJI Water uses to calculate its offsets is at the heart of the recently filed suit. The complaint says: “Defendants’ carbon-negative claim is deceptive and misleading ... reasonable consumers of FIJI water understand Defendants’ ‘carbon-negative’ claim as meaning that FIJI water’s current operations remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they release into it. This is simply not the case; in reality, FIJI water’s operations do not remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they release into it. Instead, they use a discredited

carbon accounting method called ‘forward crediting.’ “To reduce their carbon footprint, corporations purchase carbon ‘offset credits,’ which is a generic term for any tradable certificate or permit representing the right of the purchaser to emit one ton of carbon dioxide. ‘Standard offset credits’ represent carbon reductions that have already taken place. By contrast, ‘forward offset credits’ represent carbon reductions that may or may not take place up to several decades in the future.” The suit contends the carbon negative claim “induced countless consumers to pay a premium for bottled water” and cites comparative prices showing that FIJI Water costs about twice as much as other well-known brands of bottled water. Worthington, the only named plaintiff in the lawsuit thus far, “would not have purchased FIJI Water at a premium if she knew that Defendants’ current operations did not remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they release into it.” FIJI Water, whose environmental practices continued to draw fire even before the lawsuit, did not respond to requests for comment, but describes its offset program on its site: “To guarantee the quality and long-term benefits of our offset program, we have partnered with Conservation International (CI), a leading conservation organisation, and invested in an extensive forest restoration project in Fiji. With the first 250 acres of new trees already planted and growing, the resulting 2000-acre forest will deliver key global as well as regional benefits, including long-term carbon sequestration, preservation and restoration of natural wildlife habitats and biodiversity in the region, protection of critical watersheds, and income opportunities for hundreds in local Fijian communities.” Worthington’s lawsuit also names FIJI Water’s parent company Roll International Corporation as a defendant and seeks any legal and equitable remedies -- including monetary damages, statutory penalties, attorneys’ fees and other costs -- deemed appropriate by the court. The Newport Trial Group declined to comment on the suit.

A national lottery organised to fund Fiji’s participation at this year’s Rugby World Cup could instead deepen its financial problems as it faces a fine of $F125,000 (NZ$106,500) for discounting tickets.Fiji’s Commerce Commission threatened to impose the fine after the Fiji Rugby Union reduced the price of tickets from F$20 (US$11) to F$10 to boost sluggish sales. The Commission has given the union five days to comply with a series of demands to avoid the fine, which would severely damage its already perilous financial position. The union is required to advertise in all daily newspapers, offering to repay F$10

to anyone who bought a ticket at the original price. The lottery, which was drawn last week, carried cash prizes of F$100,000, F$70,000 and F$30,000 - substantial sums in the Pacific nation where wages are low. The Commerce Commission has ordered the union not to pay prizewinners until its instructions have been complied with.Fiji Rugby Union chairman Bill Gavoka said his union was “shocked” by the Commerce Commission’s directive and believed it had complied with all terms of its lottery permit.“Put very simply, the permit did not prohibit us from discounting the price of the ticket and like any business, we used that ability to discount as a way of moving inventory that was not selling,” Gavoka said in a statement.“In addition, it was restricted to a very limited period and the overriding concern was to maximize the sale of the tickets for the benefit of our boys, the Flying Fijians.”

Children recently staying at WorldMark Resort Denarau Island have been given a lesson in being green; thanks to a fun new initiative involving adventure loving Wynnie the Wallaby. Wyndham Green’s kids’ initiative “Wynnie the Wallaby’s Green Adventure” provides children with a fun and informative lesson in reducing their carbon footprint. Children staying at the resort are given an activity booklet which includes games and a quiz which can be answered by following signs around the resort. Once the kids have completed the booklet they receive a gift bag and a certificate of completion. WorldMark Denarau Island general manager Bob Speed said Wynnie the Wallaby has been introduced to educate children and their parents about how they can be environmentally friendly both at the resort and at home.

WorldMark Denarau Island is currently undergoing refurbishments and works closely with the Narewa community in Nadi. “Wynnie the Wallaby will help us show our guests that we have a commitment to protecting the environment and I think it will create some excitement for our young guests,” Bob said. “Not only will it educate our young guests about protecting the environment, it will also educate their parents and our staff.” Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific chief executive officer and managing director, Barry Robinson said the aim of the green initiative was to educate young people about preserving the environment in a fun and informative way. “Wyndham is committed to reducing carbon emissions and we want everyone who stays at our properties to learn how to do the same and be more conscious of their impact on the environment,” Mr. Robinson said. Wyndham Vacation Resorts Asia Pacific, a member of Wyndham Worldwide Corporation’s (NYSE: WYN) family of companies develops, markets and sells vacation ownership interests in the Asia Pacific and acquires, franchises and manages hotels and resorts for Wyndham Hotel Group.

FOREIGN Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola has thanked the Australian Government for increasing the number of Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) to Fiji this year from 20 to 40 awards and 24 are postgraduate while 16 are under graduate.According to the Information Ministry, Ratu Inoke said education and training were fundamental building blocks for economic and human development. He said they opened up opportunities for employment and economic activities that were otherwise not possible, and provided both the incentive and necessary skills for economic progress.

“I am therefore pleased with the Australian government’s decision to upscale its scholarship award to Fiji because this will help us overcome some of our impediments to higher education and improve education and training opportunities for our people,” Ratu Inoke said.“I am hopeful, however, Australia can further increase the number of awards in the next five years given their acknowledgement, that the latest increase is due to the high success rate among our candidates, their contribution on their return to Fiji and the high demand and quality of our candidates.”

MORE than $14million will be utilised for government scholarships and training, under the Public Service Commission and Multi-Ethnic Affairs Scholarship Program in 2011 says Public Service Permanent Secretary Parmesh Chand.According to the Information Ministry, the funds would be used for the education of more than 1000 new students. This is the same number of continuing students in various local and overseas institutions.Mr Chand said both programs of funding were now under PSC following the

devolution of the Department of Multi-Ethnic Affairs announced as part of the 2011 Budget. He said when advertisements are placed this year for next year’s scholarships program, there would be a completely new set of criteria in place. He said this was required by virtue of principles enshrined in the People’s Charter.According to the Ministry, 35 students are studying in various universities in Australia and New Zealand under the PSC Scholarship program. These students would continue their programs this year.

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation has turned down a request by the Sugar Cane Growers Council to extend crushing at the Rarawai mill past the January 7 deadline issued by the Sugar Industry Tribunal last week.FSC spokesman Samuela Railoa said the corporation would stop crushing on Friday as planned.“The current supply of cane coming into the mill is 99.9 per cent burnt cane,” he said.“So it is uneconomical for both the growers and FSC to continue past the January 7 date.” Meanwhile, the Rarawai mill stopped

crushing after a leak was discovered in one of its boiler tubes. According to Mr Railoa, engineers would have had the mill back in operation. SCGC acting chief executive officer Sundresh Chetty said he hoped the FSC would reconsider closing crushing on Friday because of the mill stoppage and tonnage of standing cane in Ba.“Because of the stoppage, no quota was issued. I hope they issue quota that they cut back and reconsider closing the mill on Friday because of the large amount of standing cane.”

THE Department of Energy hopes that the new biomass cooking stoves introduced by an environment-friendly company will reduce Fiji’s imported fuel bill.Department of Energy’s Biofuel section representative Viliame Vosarogo made the comment at the launch of Envirofit clean cook stove at their shop in Nausori. The stoves were brought by Amit Singh, who is the chief executive officer of Green Pacific Enterprises, a Canadian company working in partnership with American organisation Envirofit International.Mr Singh said the stove was environment friendly and did not require kerosene or diesel.“We wanted to introduce this stove in Fiji

to help those people in the lower income bracket reduce their fuel expenses,” he said.Mr Singh said the clean technology cooking stove was launched in 2007 and it was a joint initiative from the Shell Foundation and Envirofit with the aim to address the global killer, indoor air pollution.“This cooking stove does not need kerosene and one only has to use few pieces of firewood to cook their food,” he said.Mr Vosarogo said the Energy Department had a number of strategies for the overall reduction of fuel imports. He said the strategies included the development of renewable energy sources like solar, hydro, wind and bio energy.“I would like to thank the management and Mr Amit Singh of Green Pacific Enterprises in having confidence of setting up of “Go green products” business in Fiji,” he said.Mr Vosarogo said with the introduction of the new Environfit clean cook stove in Fiji by Green Pacific Enterprises there could be an overall reduction in the quantity and consumption of kerosene at household level in Fiji.“In addition our spending in this product will also come down. This is the type of technology we would like to promote, since it is assisting the overall objective of the department in the reduction of imported fuels,” he said.Mr Singh and his wife Bobby Singh, who are from Surrey British Columbia Canada, said they chose to launch the product in Fiji because they wanted to help the people here.He said they planned to open another store in Lautoka and in Labasa.

salman taseer was one of the most moderate political voices in the main

ruling Pakistan People’s Party.

One of Pakistan’s high-profile provincial governors has been shot dead by one of his own bodyguards in a brazen daylight attack in the capital Islamabad. The governor of Punjab province, Salman Taseer, was shot dead at an up-market shopping centre. The Punjab governor was an outspoken critic of religious extremists and had called for the scrapping of the death penalty for the crime of blasphemy.Mr Taseer was a member of the ruling

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and was a close ally of President Asif Ali Zardari.Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has condemned the assassination and declared three days of national mourning.Hundreds of people gathered outside Mr Taseer’s home to express their shock at what had happened.Mr Taseer was one of the most moderate political voices in the PPP, which this week slumped into a major political crisis when its junior coalition partner walked out of the federal government. He was outspoken against the Taliban and other Islamist militants hunkered down in the country’s north-west, and who have made increasing inroads into Punjab in recent years. Most recently he had spoken out against controversial blasphemy laws.Blasphemy, which carries the death penalty in Pakistan, has been a very volatile issue, with particular focus on the case of a young Christian woman accused of blasphemy.Mr Taseer had said the death penalty was

too severe as a punishment, coming out publicly in support for the young woman and calling for a change in the law.His stance drew strong criticism from some Muslim clerics in Pakistan and Mr Taseer had said he believed he was a target because of it.Interior minister Rehman Malik says the killer was a member of Mr Taseer’s own security team.He said the killer quickly confessed to the crime and had apparently worked for the governor on five or six previous occasions.“He confessed that he killed the governor himself because he had called the blasphemy law a black law,” Mr Malik said.“He has confessed his crime and surrendered his gun to police after the attack,” he told reporters. The brazen daylight shooting came as wealthy Pakistanis and expatriates were enjoying a late lunch or afternoon coffee in nearby cafes.Spent cartridges littered the road outside

Kohsar market in Islamabad’s F6 sector, just a short distance from where Mr Taseer kept a home, witnesses said.Local administration chief Amir Ahmad Ali said Mr Taseer died in hospital after being wounded in the shooting in F6.“I was in the market. I heard the gunfire and hit the ground,” said Shaukat, 28, a labourer.“Later on, while running for shelter, I saw a man in uniform being grabbed by police. Later on, police officials said he was the attacker.”Police and anti-terrorism forces surround the area and the market closed after the attack.Mr Taseer made his money as a chartered accountant, setting up consultancy firms and a brokerage house, and with investments in telecommunications, the media, insurance and real estate before going into politics. He served as minister for industry and production under former military ruler Pervez Musharraf from 2007 to 2008.

ANGELINA Jolie and Brad Pitt have made a $2 million donation to an African wildlife sanctuary for injured animals. Hollywood’s starring couple donated the money to the Naankuse Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary in Namibia after spending Christmas there with their six children.Jolie, 35, has enjoyed close ties with Namibia since giving birth to daughter Shiloh there in 2006.“We want her [Shiloh] to grow up with

an understanding of her country of birth,” Jolie said of the donation, which was made via the Jolie-Pitt Foundation and in Shiloh’s name.“We continue to be impressed by their [the sanctuary’s] hard work and dedication to the people and conservation of the land and wildlife of Namibia.”The sanctuary offers a home to orphaned and injured local animals -- including leopards, cheetahs and lions -- that cannot be released back into the wild.Jolie and Pitt are well-known for their philanthropic work. In November, they donated $150,000 in recognition of National Adoption Day in the USA. They also gave $1 million earlier this year to help aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres’ (Doctors Without Borders) operation in Haiti.

The Cannes Film Festival Thursday named US film star Robert De Niro to head the jury for this year’s film fest running May 11-22.De Niro, 67, has appeared in more than 70 films, twice winning the coveted Oscar

as best actor (“Godfather II” and “Raging Bull”).“I was head of the jury twice in the 1980s and I know that it’s not an easy task, but I am thrilled about it,” De Niro said about his role in the 64th edition of the Cannes festival.

Entry of dogs has been banned in most public places in Abu Dhabi, including beaches, swimming pools, parks, shopping centres and restaurants. The Abu Dhabi Municipality said this was part of an effort to maintain public health and the urban aesthetic appearance of the city. The municipality called on all dog owners to adhere to rules while taking their pets on hikes or strolls in public areas, roads,

gardens and sidewalks. It also called upon the pet owners to remove dog waste in plastic bags and throw it in rubbish bins. The failure to take such course of action will invoke legal questioning, it said. The municipality will soon enforce compulsory immunisation and numbering of pets through a microchip system. It will also designate certain areas at parks for strolling of dogs, a senior official said.

Two sisters have celebrated their 101st birthday as officially the oldest twins in the world.Ena Pugh and Lily Millward, born together on January 4, 1910, were toasted with cups of tea and cake by their family in a special party. The pair were given the accolade by Guinness World records last year after checking their birth certificates.Tucking into a piece of birthday cake, Ena said: “We are having a lovely day.” And twin Lily said: “Thank you very much; it’s lovely to be together.”Farmer’s daughters Ena and Lily were

born before the outbreak of World War 1 when Queen Victoria’s son Edward VII was king. The pair still live in their own houses near Brecon in the Welsh countryside, meet up for weekly shopping sessions and chat on the telephone virtually every night.Great-grandmother Lily revealed the secret of their long life is “laughter and having a joke with each other.”She said: “We used to work on the farm all day, but we would enjoy ourselves.“It was a lot of fun and sociable. We’ve been very lucky and we have always had good health.”

Their family had no idea Ena and Lily were the oldest in the world until twins in France claimed the record. But checks showed they were more than three years older.Lily’s daughter Dianne Powell, 64, said: “As twins they have been very close all their lives and they are still very close now.“Each of them jumps on a bus on their own every Friday so they can go shopping together and have a chat over a cup of tea.“And they ring each other almost every evening although they are both very hard of hearing; they can’t really always know what the other is saying but just enjoy

talking to each other.”Ena was born first on a chilly day in January 1910 with Lily a few minutes later in their family farm cottage in the tiny village of Garthbrengy, near Brecon in mid-Wales.Their parents Charles and Laura Thomas had ten children including twin brothers but Ena and Lily are the only survivors.Ena married railwayman Ivor who died more than 20 years ago.She still lives in her country cottage where she raised their three children and now has 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

3.7 Magnitude earthquake hits northern england near leeds

us offers australia flood aidbrought to book ... Michael thompson

A DRIVER who flashed his headlights at oncoming motorists to warn them of a police speed trap has been left with a £440 bill for “obstructing police”. Michael Thompson thought it was his “civic duty” to warn other drivers of the mobile speed cameras ahead. Thompson, 64, of Grimsby, Lincs, denied wilfully obstructing a policewoman in the execution of her duty on July 21 last year but was convicted after a trial. The vigorously-pursued prosecution was branded “ridiculous” and “a complete waste of taxpayers’ money” by lawyers. One solicitor praised Thompson and said: “He should be given a medal.” The trial, which took half a day at Grimsby Magistrates, cost the Crown Prosecution Service at least £250 and three police officers were in court for most of that time. Even they privately questioned the decision to pursue the case to prosecution and admitted that members of the public believed police time should be given to catching criminals. The trial heard Thompson was driving out

of Grimsby on to the A46 dual carriageway when he spotted a police speed trap. He flashed his headlights about seven times to warn oncoming drivers heading towards Grimsby but was pulled in by the police. He claimed that, after he challenged the officers, one of them told him: “I was going to let you off with a caution but I’m not now.” He told the court the officer told him he was “perverting the course of justice” but he told the officer: “I don’t believe that’s the case.” He branded the officer “a Rambo character” and claimed he was acting like “Judge Dredd” in using the law against him unnecessarily. Solicitor Anton Balkitis, a specialist in motoring law, said most motorists who flash at other drivers to warn them of a speed trap “think they are doing people a favour”. He said: “It does seem somewhat ironic that they are actually encouraging people, by flashing their lights, to drive in a safe manner and yet to be prosecuted for that seems somewhat at odds with the purposes of the legislation. “But it is an offence of obstruction and people do get taken to court for it so perhaps people need to be made aware of it.” A CPS spokeswoman defended the case, saying: “Cost is not a consideration in our decision to prosecute. “When a file is provided to the CPS from the police, it is our duty to decide whether it presents a realistic prospect of conviction and whether a prosecution is in the public interest. “In accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors a prosecution was deemed appropriate.”

The famous pilgrim centre of Shri Saibaba temple in Shirdi, one of the richest temples in Maharashtra, has ornaments and jewellery worth over Rs 32-crore and investments running into Rs 4,27,17,02,929, according to official documents. The administration of Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust (Shirdi), governed by the Managing Committee which was constituted by the Maharashtra Government way back on August 23, 2004 has Kisan Vikas Patras worth Rs 51,71,00,100 besides Government of India eight-percent Saving Bonds amounting to Rs 48,15,53,000 and Rs 8-cr in non-reedmable bonds of Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, and Rs 3,19,30,49,929 in various nationalised banks. It has Rs 47,82,31,835.64 as Trust Corpus Fund. The immovable property and buildings are worth Rs 79,28,30,95 including the Statue

of Saibaba worth Rs eight lakhs, the annual report stated. The Chartered Accountancy firm also suggested the Managing Committee to dispose off precious stones valued at Rs 2,00,79,164 by conducting public auction, at regular intervals to augment its revenue. During the year 2009-10, Saibaba temple received donations of 147.10 grams gold valued at Rs 2,44,888 and silver weighing 4508 grams whose present cost at the end of fiscal year 2009-10 was Rs 1,02,640, the audit report said. An interesting point mentioned in the report is that unlike many civic bodies, the Trust has accepted and implemented the Sixth Pay Commission Report for its employees. Also, it says that the temple transactions on a daily basis closes at 2 pm. Cash received later on is included in the next day’s collection.

A 3.7 magnitude earthquake struck on Tuesday near Leeds, England, the US Geological Survey reported. It said the quake struck shortly after 9pm local time about 45km north of Sheffield, 55km east-northeast of Manchester and 270km north-northwest of London at a depth of 10km.

It was felt by people living in Cumbria, North Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. The tremor was the second to hit England in the space of a few weeks. Last month, the British Geological Survey reported an earthquake of 3.5 magnitude hit in Coniston in the Lake District.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed condolences for the loss of life in Australia’s floods and says Washington is prepared to provide assistance to its close ally. Up to 200,000 people are estimated to have been hit by the fast-flowing waters that have inundated 22 rural towns in the country’s northeast, across an area the size of New South Wales.“On behalf of President (Barack) Obama and the people of the United States, I offer my condolences for the

loss of life and damage in Queensland caused by the recent flooding,” Ms Clinton said in a statement.“Our embassy in Canberra is monitoring the situation and has been in contact with Australian authorities.Australia is an important partner and close friend of the United States and we stand ready to provide assistance,” she said.“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by these floods, especially the families of the victims, and with all the people of Australia.”

The Prime Minister of Tonga has defended criticism of the make-up of his new cabinet which met for the first time on January 4th.The cabinet includes six people’s representatives, three nobles and two commoners chosen by the prime minister from outside the assembly. The Democratic Party of Friendly Islands has accepted two cabinet positions, despite initially seeking greater representation because it won 12 out of 17 constituencies open for democratic elections. But the Prime Minister, Lord Tu’ivakano says he made the cabinet appointments based on constituencies -

“So Akilisi is representative of Tongatapu number 1 and Isileli from Tongatapu number 4, so they are two of the oldest members of parliament, with due respect they are more experienced than the new ones. But the other reason is they did demand if they have three or four other ones or otherwise they withdraw. I said to them if they have one or two they should be thankful because we should be making bargains with the losers.”Lord Tu’ivakano says Clive Edwards and Ana Maui Taufe’ulungaki were appointed to cabinet because of their experience, even though they were not elected to parliament.

The best young sides in the Pacific will soon gather in Auckland when North Harbour Stadium plays host to the OFC U-17 Championship 2011.The ten teams will all be fighting it out for the right to represent Oceania at the next

FIFA U-17 World Cup.Tahiti will be among the teams competing in the event, an OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) press release states. But there will also be teams from American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.Defending champions New Zealand will try to retain the title gained in 2009.But the other island nations have continued their improvement at youth level over the last years. This could help them earn an upset win and give them the right to represent Oceania at the next FIFA U-17 World Cup.The next FIFA U-17 World Cup is scheduled to take place this year in Mexico.

Congressman Faleomavaega Eni, who has been in American Samoa for the New Year, announced that President Barack Obama invited him to fly back to Washington, D.C. on Air Force One.The President departed Hawaii on Monday, January 3, 2011 from Hickam Air Force Base. President Obama has been in Hawaii since December 23, 2010 where he has been spending the holidays with family and childhood friends.

Also riding along with President Obama from Washington was Senator Daniel Akaka and Congresswoman Mazie Hirono.“Fa’afetai tele to President Obama for giving me a ride back to Washington,” Faleomavaega said.“On behalf of the people of American Samoa, I am honored to fly back with the President of the United States. I especially look forward to talking to President Obama about the outsized

sacrifice of our military men and women, as well as where we are in recovery efforts after the 2009 tsunami.I also hope to discuss our economic development and issues affecting the Asia Pacific region. When President Obama was elected in 2008, he inherited an economy on the brink of collapse and a war in Iraq which has cost trillions of dollars. Yet President Obama continues to do all he can to grow the economy which is still fragile. The road to recovery has not been easy for the U.S. or other nations that have also suffered

setbacks due to a global recession. But I have every confidence that America will pull through, and this includes the Territories.”“Once more, I want to thank President Obama for extending an invitation for me to fly back to Washington on Air Force One and, again, I very much look forward to working with him and his Administration as well as my Republican and Democratic colleagues during the 112th Congress. As always, I thank the people of American Samoa for their support and prayers, and I will keep on doing everything I can to move their interests forward,” Faleomavaega concluded.

Two children who hid and called for help when their house was broken into Tuesday are earning high praise from Calgary's police chief.A 12-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl hid in a closet in their southeast Calgary home on Tuesday afternoon when burglars kicked in the front door of the house. The brother and sister called police using a cellphone, but the two men who broke into the house managed to escape as police arrived. They made off with some remote controls, but electronic goods they'd stashed in the garage to take with them were left behind. A TV was dropped on the ground and smashed in the process, the family said.'We just stopped breathing'Chief Rick Hanson said the kids are being considered for a bravery award."I do want to just say that those kids deserve a lot of recognition and a lot of praise for the way that they handled the situation," Hanson said at a news conference Wednesday morning."They were composed, and they did everything we could expect them to do: took themselves out of harm's way, got the information to the right people that could help at the right time, and the response was very, very quick."The girl, whose name is being withheld because her family fears for their safety, told the media what happened. She got up shortly after noon, and was about to join her brother watching TV when they heard loud knocking and doorbell ringing downstairs, she said. The kids made their way to the door and tried to look through the peephole, but it was blocked by the Christmas wreath. Her brother looked through a window and saw a strange, "weird" man, the girl said. The knocking grew louder, so her brother grabbed a phone and they made their way upstairs, she said."The moment we shut the closet doors, we heard them come in," the

girl said. She said her brother did a great job of calmly telling the 911 operator what was going on.When one of the burglars came into her room, she said it felt like her heart stopped."My head was pounding. We just stopped breathing, we didn't want to make one bit of noise."1 arrested, 2 others sought by policeAfter rifling through her dresser drawers, the man left, she said. Minutes later, the burglars took off and she heard the loud voices of police officers in the house."When they opened the closet … we were just so happy," the girl said. "I started crying, [and] my brother said he wanted to give them a hug."Their mother was stuck in traffic at the time, and had a phone call from her son while the burglary was underway, but the line went dead. She said she talked to police shortly thereafter, however, and learned that everything was fine."I was on Cloud 9, actually," she said. "I was just so grateful and happy that my kids are OK."The 911 operator who took the call did "a wonderful job" of hurriedly dispatching police, Hanson said.Police said Wednesday afternoon that they'd made an arrest of the alleged wheelman in the breaking and entering. Justin Stewart Key, a 20-year-old Calgary man, has been charged with breaking and entering, and destroying or damaging property.Police are looking for two more suspects. One is described as a Caucasian man with a slim build. He was wearing a tuque and a light brown, or tan, three-quarter-length jacket. The second suspect is described as an adult male.Police said they believe the two suspects who were in the house made off on foot and allegedly stole a truck from a nearby construction site that was later recovered. The driver of the getaway car, which was also stolen, had taken off when police approached. The mother of the two kids said that apart from some trouble sleeping Tuesday night, she thinks they're going to be OK.She said she only recently let the two kids stay at home by themselves, and stressed the importance of parents talking to their children about what to do if someone breaks in while they're home alone.

Canadians heading to the United Arab Emirates now face steep new visa fees. The fee structure went into effect Sunday and is the latest manoeuvre in the diplomatic scrap between Canada and the U.A.E.The new rules will have a significant impact on some Canadian businesses. For 30 years, Marco Abdi has called himself Canadian, building a life in Calgary, where he runs a restaurant, while maintaining deep ties with his former home, the United Arab Emirates.“Opportunities in the U.A.E. are very open,” he said. That’s why he started another venture, using his connections in the Middle East to help Canadians build businesses in the U.A.E.It has been very successful, but now Abdi is concerned about the new visa fees.“It’s sad, and it’s all politics, but the reality is that small business people suffer,” he said.Canadians will now have to pay $1,000

for a six-month multiple entry visa and the maximum stay is 14 days per visit. A three-month visa will go for $500. A 30-day visa will cost $250.Canada was among more than 30 countries whose citizens could travel to the U.A.E. on a free one-month visa, but tensions have risen between the two countries.Last October, the U.A.E. informed Canada that its military personnel had 30 days to leave the Camp Mirage base outside Dubai. The move came after Canada failed to meet U.A.E. demands to expand landing rights for its airlines using Canadian airports. Then, the U.A.E. announced the new visa restrictions.People who do business in both countries now face not only an added expense, but more paperwork. Abdi says the government is not working in their best interest.“My reputation is as a Canadian. I fly high and I am very proud to be Canadian, but now I’m thinking twice because they put me in a different category.”

Fresh and delicious, prawns make for fast and easy meals. From a simple midweek pasta to a crispy snack shared among friends and in a fragrant pot of thick, rich tomato sauce, these versatile crustaceans are a breeze to prepare. All you need are nimble fingers and a few vibrant ingredients to bring out their uniquely sweet flavour. Tips and tricks When buying prawns, look for firm ones with no discolouring around the head or legs. You should eat prawns as soon as possible after purchasing. Store them in an airtight container lined with

absorbent paper. You can remove the heads before storing, but don’t peel them or they’ll dry out. About half of a prawn is its head and shell, so buying 1kg of prawns will give you 500g of meat.To remove the shell, hold the head between two fingers, twist and pull it away from the body. Use your fingers to gently roll off the shell and legs. You can leave the tail intact for appearance. To clean raw prawns, make a slit along the back, remove the intestinal tract and rinse in cold water. Pat dry with absorbent paper.

The health benefits of spinach are numerous and its ability to help prevent disease is well known. Spinach is at the top of many super food lists. Spinach NutritionSpinach and other dark leafy greens like kale, collards, Swiss chard, turnip greens and bok choy are loaded with calcium, folic acid, vitamin K and iron.Spinach is also rich in vitamin C, fiber and carotenoids. Add its lutein and bioflavanoids and spinach is a nutritional powerhouse. Why Eat Spinach? Spinach nutrition is amazing. The calcium content in spinach and the other

dark leafy greens mentioned above strengthens bones. The A and C vitamins in spinach plus the fiber, folic acid, magnesium and other nutrients help control cancer, especially colon, lung and breast cancers. Folate also lowers the blood levels of something called homocysteine, a protein that damages arteries. So spinach also helps protect against heart disease. The flavonoids in spinach help protect against age related memory loss.Spinach’s secret weapon, lutein, makes it one of the best foods in the world to prevent cataracts, as well as age related macular degeneration, the leading cause

of preventable blindness in the elderly. Foods rich in lutein are also thought to help prevent cancer. As you can see, the health benefits of spinach are numerous. The vitamins and calcium in spinach, combined with the overall nutritional value of spinach, make this vegetable and its dark leafy green cousins top picks for healthy food choices. Fresh or frozen, add these greens to your food menu as often as you can.How to Get More Spinach in your Diet: •Add chopped fresh or frozen spinach to lasagna to up the nutrient content of this

tasty comfort food. •Add chopped or frozen spinach to your favorite vegetable soup recipe. •Sauté spinach with a bit of garlic for a tasty super food combination. Try it on top of a baked potato. •Make quick and easy spinach dips to eat with crunchy raw vegetables and whole grain breads like pumpernickel, and enjoy the health benefits of spinach while you nibble on your favorite veggies. •Use fresh spinach instead of lettuce to add a twist to your favorite sandwiches. •Add chopped fresh or frozen spinach to omelets and frittatas. Make sure frozen spinach is thawed and well drained.

initially, 19 people claimed to be the winners of the $50-million lotto Max jackpot. additional claimants

have since come forward.

Partners in a $50 million Lotto Max jackpot who bought things in advance of receiving their share of the winnings will be scrambling to cover bills after a payout delay was announced Tuesday.“I just think this is bittersweet,” ticket-buyer Natalie Damianidis told the media after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. (OLG) decided to launch a review based on other people’s claims to the windfall.

“I’m tired of this,” Damianidis said in a brief interview.“I know who the people are who I have on the list,” she said.Damiandis said she organized a pool with Bell Canada co-workers four weeks ago, buying $95 worth of tickets — “at $5 per person.”OLG announced it has put payouts for the New Year’s Eve top ticket on hold “due to additional claimants coming forward and claiming an interest in a portion of the prize.“A rigorous prize claim review process needs to be completed before any prize is paid out,” said the OLG statement.Staff at an Esso On the Run outlet at Victoria Park and McNicoll Aves. said a woman identifying herself as a Bell employee brought the winning ticket in the Dec. 31 draw to the station early Monday for verification.Calling her a “regular customer,” Kumar Arumugam said “she didn’t know how much ... but she knew it was a big amount.”In addition to sharing Ontario’s biggest-

ever lottery payout with 18 partners, the ticket-holder’s winning combination of numbers also qualified for a “free ticket,” Arumugam said.By mid-day Monday, after cheers and happy screams were heard throughout the Bell building on Borough Dr. — beside the Scarborough Town Centre — none of the partners in the big buck bonanza pool remained in the building. A source said two other members of the pool work at a Bell facility in Mississauga. The big winners were expected to collect their big prize as early as Thursday afternoon at the OLG offices at Yonge and Dundas Sts.Spokesman Sarah Kiriliuk earlier said because there was a “huge backlog” of paperwork when the gaming office opened Tuesday after the holidays, officials recommended the lottery winners come in Wednesday.“If we can verify their claims and there are no insiders (meaning, for example, no relatives work at a lottery retailer) then they could pick up their prizes as early as

Thursday,” Kiriliuk said. Each person was expected to receive about $2.6 million.OLG put the brakes on handing out any cheques, stressing its “commitment is to ensure all lottery players are protected and the right prize is paid to the right person every time.”Agency officials said it is the first time a single ticket sold in Ontario won the $50-million jackpot since Lotto Max was launched in 2009 and this is the sixth jackpot for that amount in Lotto Max history. There were rumours circulating that the Lucky 19 would meet at the Borough Dr. building and ride a limousine to the OLG offices around 9 a.m. Tuesday, but no one showed up.“That was before we suggested to them coming in tomorrow,” Kiriliuk said. Bell Canada’s Borough Dr. call centre was abuzz with other employees who were still shocked by their co-workers’ good fortune. The majority of winners didn’t show up for work Tuesday.

Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal later this month for his first speaking engagements since leaving office.Conference organizing company tinePublic Inc. announced Schwarzenegger will be in Calgary on Jan. 25 for a lunch event at the Telus Convention Centre, Winnipeg’s Fairmont Hotel that evening and in Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Jan. 26.“Arnold Schwarzenegger is a truly iconic global figure with an incredible life story,” the press release announcing the speeches said.

“Canadian audiences will be the first to be inspired by this truly amazing story.”The Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal also announced Schwarzenegger will be speaking there on Jan. 27.“After Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, George W. Bush, Alan Greenspan and Sir Richard Branson, we are proud to welcome Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger to our forum,” Michel Leblanc, president and CEO of the Board of Trade, said in a release. “Mr. Schwarzenegger’s visit reaffirms Montréal’s position as a top destination for leaders on the

international scene who want to share their vision of the challenges we are facing.”Schwarzenegger, a Republican, was elected the 38th governor of California in 2003 and left office Jan. 3. He is perhaps better known for his roles in movies such as The Terminator series, True Lies, and Kindergarten Cop. He didn’t take on any starring film roles while governor, although he does have an uncredited appearance in the 2010 action movie, The Expendables, and Terminator Salvation in 2009. Prior to acting, he was a bodybuilder. He has said he is considering a return to acting.

A United Airlines flight from Chicago to Germany was diverted to Toronto’s Pearson Airport late Monday night after the pilot spilled a coffee, Transport Canada reports. The coffee interfered with the plane’s navigation and communication system and sent out distress signals including code 7500 — unlawful interference, or a hijacking —

and code 7600, which means the plane has lost communications.“With the help of their company dispatch staff, the flight crew was confirmed the problem to be a NAV(navigation)/communication issue and not a valid code 7500. The flight crew initially diverted to return to Chicago but subsequently declared an emergency ... and

diverted to Toronto,” the report on Transport Canada’s civil aviation daily occurrence reporting system says.“Staff reported that the United Airlines, Inc. corporate office had indicated that the pilot in command had inadvertently squawked a 7500 code after spilling coffee on the aircraft’s radio equipment.”

After the communication issues, the flight crew made the decision to land the Boeing 777 in Toronto around 10 p.m. Monday. United Airlines sent a second plane to Toronto, which picked up the 255 passengers and took them back to Chicago. The passengers were able to board a fight to Frankfurt, Germany on Tuesday.

Shiva PujaHow to worship Lord Shiva

The Shiva-chaturdashi or MahaShivaratri Puja (pronounced: Pooja = worship) has been given tremendous significance in the Puranas, Tantras and other Hindu mythologies. It is said that ritual worship of Lord Shiva on the Shivaratri (also pronounced: Shivratri) day pleases Lord Shiva the most. Devotees further believe that by pleasing Lord Shiva on the auspicious Shivaratri day, a person is absolved of past sins and is blessed with Moksha or salvation.Materials Needed for shiva Puja

* Shiva Linga / Idol of Lord Shiva

* Yagnyopaveet

(sacred thread, tied across the left shoulder & down below the right abdomen)

* Kumkum

(turmeric dried and powdered with a bit of slaked lime, which turns the rich yellow powder into red color, for offering)* Haldi(Turmeric)* Aguru(Holy perfume used for worship)* Vibhuti(sacred ash, generally the residue of cow dung, that is burned in a sacred fire- yajna, for marking the forehead/lingam of Lord Shiva, as also using it on the forehead of the worshipper)* Rudraaksha Mala(Garland of Rudraakshas, to chant the name of Lord Shiva) [Rudraaksha or, Rudraksha (=”Rudra-eyed”)

is the name of the dark berries of Elaeocarpus ganitrus, used to make prayer beads The word is a Sanskrit compound consisting of the name Rudra (synonymous now to Lord Shiva) and aksha (“eye”)]* Akshata(uncooked yellow rice)* Bael Patra(wood apple leaves, preferably 108, else 1008 or, 28)* White sandalwood paste* Incense sticks* Camphor* Fresh flowers[Datura, Milkweed Pearls (aakanda), Bhaat , Aparajita]* Fruits-wood apple (must), small-sized bananas, coconut, berries etc.* Lamps

(with wicks soaking in oil or ghee)* Naivedya & Drinking Water(for Prasaad, or food offerings, the naivedya consists of uncooked aatap rice arranged in 4 small heaps round a platter, and one heap in the middle. Then each of these 5 heaps is topped with sliced bananas and sweets)* Milk(unboiled)* Sugar* Sour yoghurt* Ghee* Honey* Gangaajal(water from river Ganges)Getting Ready for Shivaratri PujaTo perform the worship of Lord Shankara (Shiva) on Shivratri, devotees wake up early and take a ritual bath, preferably in the holy waters of river Ganga. This is followed by worship to Sun God, Vishnu and Shiva in accordance with the purification rite observed on all-important Hindu festivals. Devotees then wear fresh new clothes and pay a visit to the nearest Shiva temple. As a tradition, devotees observe a fast on a Shivaratri day. Some do not consume even a drop of water.

Just for KidsParenting

Winter Word Search

You rub and rub your eyes, but they won’t stop itching. When you look in the mirror, they are red and puffy. What’s going on? Do you have a strange sickness? No — you have a common problem called conjunctivitis. It’s better known as pinkeye. What Is Conjunctivitis?Conjunctivitis (say: kon-junk-tih-vy-tis) is the most common eye problem kids can have. It can cause redness, itching, inflammation (say: in-fla-may-shun) or swelling, and a clear or white, yellow, or greenish gooey liquid to collect in the eyes. It’s called pinkeye because the white part of the eye and inside the eyelids become red or pink when you have it. Pinkeye may start in one eye, but many people get conjunctivitis in both eyes at the same time. Conjunctivitis usually doesn’t hurt, but itching can be annoying. Sometimes it feels like you have an eyelash or a speck of sand in your eye and can’t get it out.Adults, especially parents and teachers who spend a lot of time with kids, can get conjunctivitis too. Conjunctivitis lasts a short time, usually about a week or less, and then goes away by itself or after treatment. How Do I Get Conjunctivitis?Kids get conjunctivitis for different reasons. Most kids get it from bacteria (say: bak-teer-ee-uh) or viruses. This is called infectious (say: in-fek-shus) conjunctivitis. Bacteria can be seen only with a powerful microscope, and viruses are even smaller than bacteria! Bacteria live on your skin or in your nose or mouth all the time and you never know it. Most don’t ever bother you, but certain kinds of bacteria can cause infections like conjunctivitis.Sometimes kids get ear infections when they have conjunctivitis because the same bacteria can cause both problems.Viruses, like the kind that can give you a cold, can cause conjunctivitis, too. Conjunctivitis is easy to catch just through touching. You can get conjunctivitis by touching the hand of an infected friend who has touched his or her eyes. If you then touch your eyes, the infection can be spread to you. Washing your hands often with warm, soapy water is the best way to avoid being infected with conjunctivitis.Kids also get conjunctivitis because of allergies or because they get something irritating in their eyes, but these kinds of conjunctivitis are not contagious. What Should I Do if I Think I Have It?If your eyes are itchy, red, or more crusty

than usual in the morning, you should tell a parent. Don’t wait, because conjunctivitis spreads easily. Your mom or dad probably will call the doctor for an appointment. What Will the Doctor Do?No one knows exactly how many kids get conjunctivitis each year but your doctor treats many who have it and can spot it pretty quickly. The doctor also will ask you if your eyes have been red and itchy lately or if you have noticed any goopy stuff in your eyes. It’s important to tell the doctor if you know anyone, like a brother or a friend, who has red and itchy eyes too.Your doctor will know if you have conjunctivitis by looking carefully at your eyes to see if they are red and if any liquid is coming from them. The doctor will want to know that you can see OK and that nothing has gotten into your eye. Finally, your doctor may examine your ears to see if you have an ear infection caused by the same bacteria that can cause conjunctivitis. If you have conjunctivitis caused by bacteria, the doctor will probably prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment for you. Babies are usually given the ointment and kids and adults get the eye drops. Your mom or dad can help you put the medication in your eyes a couple of times a day for about a week. It’s important to use whatever the doctor prescribes so the infection doesn’t come back. Unfortunately, these drops won’t work if a virus is causing your conjunctivitis. If allergies are causing your itchy, red eyes, the doctor may prescribe special eye drops to help with these allergy symptoms. If your eyes are bothering you, try using a cool or warm washcloth on your eyes. Sometimes, your mom or dad can make you feel better by gently cleaning your eyes with warm water and cotton balls to remove the gooey liquid or crusty stuff. They should be very careful to wash their hands and throw out the cotton balls they use. Washcloths and towels used to clean or dry your eyes should go right into the laundry so no one else gets infected. Most schools require a note from a doctor for a kid with pinkeye to return to school. Kids can usually return to school after their first 24 hours of antibiotic eye drops.Though it might be tough, try not to touch your eyes and remember to wash your hands often. These two things will help keep pinkeye from spreading to your friends and family members. They will appreciate it!

Find and circle all of the words that are hidden in the grid. The words may be hidden in any direction.

As easy as 1, 2, 3No matter what you’re trying to do, there are three important steps you need to take:1. Get organized.2. Stay focused.3. Get it done! The trouble for kids is that each of these steps is actually a lot of little steps. But figuring out how to do them is a skill that will help you a lot in school and in life. Kids have many things to do each day. And each one of them follows this 1-2-3 process.Take brushing your teeth:1.Getting organized means getting where you need to be and gathering your supplies. To brush your teeth, go to the bathroom, get out your toothbrush and toothpaste, get your toothbrush wet, then put toothpaste on it.2.Staying focused means sticking with the task. Dentists say to brush for 3 minutes, so that means keep brushing, even if you

hear a really good song on the radio or you remember that you wanted to call your friend. Concentrate and remember what the dentist told you about brushing away from your gums.3.Getting it done! If you do steps 1 and 2, step 3 almost takes care of itself. Hurray, your 3 minutes are up and your teeth are clean! Getting it done means finishing up and putting on the finishing touches. With teeth brushing, that would be stuff like rinsing off your toothbrush and putting it away, putting the cap back on the toothpaste, and making sure there’s no toothpaste foam on your face!Maybe you’re thinking, “I can brush my teeth just fine.” If so, that’s great because it means that you can apply those same skills to school or any project you need to get done, like homework or cleaning your room.

6 FLAGSTAFF WINS NAFSA TOURNAMENTThe biggest sports news story of 2010 was

Javed Khan’s inclusion in the Fiji training squad days before Christmas.Fiji Football Association President Dr. Shamsu Dean Shau Khan announced Javed along with Watford F.C. defender Adrian Mariappa (England) Apisolome Turuva (New Zealand) Shivan Sami (Australia) and Salesh Kumar (New Zealand). It is the first time in history a player from Canada has been called to the trials; this

has never been done before.Fiji government had recently passed a legislation giving former citizens an opportunity to hold dual citizenship. Khan, a Canadian citizen qualifies to play under his parent’s country of birth, Fiji. His selection opens up a complete new avenue for players who would otherwise not make it to the Canadian national team. The local league has an abundance of talent that could one day get similar invitations to represent Fiji.

Robert Ali and Suva claimed the 2010 Muslim championship 2-1 in a thriller final over Ba.Suva lost to Ba in the opening game but regrouped to beat a batted and bruised Ba

side who had earlier lost the semi-finals to a make shift Nadi Muslim team 4-1.This was the biggest upset of the tournament. Nadi failed to qualify for the finals after playing an unlisted player.

With fine performance throughout the summer season Nicholas Naidu garnered most votes to win the Fiji Times Canada player of The Year

Award.Naidu out voted his closest rival Javed Khan and Sager Sammy to walk away with soccer’s top award.

Nadi Masters unprecedented league and Presidents cup title wins capped the great season. The all-impressive year round performance was attributed to the resilience of the players and officials. The team was on the verge of collapse when President Mohammed Ali took charge to

turn it around as the double champions. District notables Subarmani Reddy scooped player of the year, Ilshad Ali, manager of the year and Joseph Chetty was named coach of the year during the Fiji Times Canada Awards night. The adversaries made unnecessary commotion.

Coach Naushad Khan guided the young comrades to a 1-0 win over Nadi. They successfully redeemed themselves as the true territorial champions after a heart breaker 1-0, IDC loss to Suva. Khan, a bull of a defenseman in his prime playing days made for a great coach of the day, calling great plays from the sidelines

and winning the inaugural Fiji Times Canada sponsored Fiji Fact Tournament. Ba captain Jas Singh turned instant assassin minutes in the game to score the lone goal against Nadi.Singh capitalized after a lack of coordination in the Nadi defense. The tournament had its fair share of criticisms.

Past FANCA President Tabrez Khan came under lot of fire for openly campaigning for Canadians defeat at all levels of the competition in the 2010 USA tournament. An enormous number of officials, players and supporters saw first-hand the malicious power driven leader at work. He is the reason for Canadian premier and Master’s sides failed podium run. Canadian premier team Coach Saizad Khan, Team director Saiyaz Khan, Manager

Naushad Khan and under 21 Coach Abdul Nasim expressed their disappointment and disbelief at the host nation’s propaganda. Saizad criticized the leadership and called for Tabrez’s immediate removal from the permanent members board.Australia and New Zealand threw their support behind Canada for his dismissal. Canadian financed Muslim tournament got the first taste of sour American injustice.

An out of control brawl marred the semi-finals of the Sangam Inter District Tournament.Hot heads from both sides made for the worst soccer violence in recent memory.

Both teams were immediately suspended and replaced with the losing semi finalist Nasinu. They lost to a better Suva side in the final. The angry mob dispersed after police were called, no arrests were made.

Nicholas Naidu was the hero ending Suva’s ten-year IDC winless drought. His 29th minute clinical finish siphoned Ba’s hope of winning the 2010 Inter district championship.

Naidu a top marksman in the Fijian league also played a pivotal role with Flagstaff F.C. helping them win the Presidents cup and the North American Fijian Soccer tournament.

Year after year, Raj Lal coach side proved they were not an easy beat, the determined outfit cleaned out the season. The former Nadi midfielder is considered as the best in the

business, the strict disciplinarian must be credited for leading a reputable organization.Expect more of the same in the New Year.

Flagstaff put on a fine show in the finals of the Nafsa final against their top nemesis Tanoa F.C.The close encounter was decided on a shoot out, shelving Tanoa’s

third consecutive run for the championship. Flagstaff grabbed the 2010 team of the year award during the Fiji Times Sports Awards night.

By all rights, Frankie Edgar never should have made it out of the first round of his UFC 125 main event against Gray Maynard. But after surviving multiple knockdowns in the opening frame, the UFC lightweight champion roared back to retain his belt with a five round draw in an exciting bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena that kicked off the 2011 fight year in style. Scores were 48-46 Maynard, 48-46 Edgar, and 47-47. All three judges scored the first round 10-8 in favor of Maynard. “It felt like the first round didn’t happen,” said Edgar, who made the second successful defense of his title. “It was a close fight.”“I kinda punched myself out in the first,” said Maynard. “I thought I won (rounds) 1,3,5. It was a close one, but I thought I won.”The two took their time getting acclimated to the bout in the opening minute, but Maynard announced his arrival to

championship mixed martial arts a little more than a minute in with a left hook that hurt and dropped the champion. Edgar got up, only to be sent back down by a right uppercut. Maynard pounced, but amazingly Edgar weathered the assault. Moments later, with Edgar now bleeding from the nose, Maynard struck with another hard right uppercut, and Edgar, his legs wobbly, once again seemed on the verge of defeat. Yet by the end of the round, Edgar was firing back, and now the question to be asked was whether Maynard had gassed himself out.Edgar opened the second round with a high kick, and he appeared to have his legs back under him as he moved around the Octagon and poked at the challenger with quick flurries. Maynard calmly strode forward, but his face was beginning to show the wear of battle and of Edgar’s resurgent offense. With less than 90 seconds left and the crowd chanting his name, Edgar

responded with a quick flurry that opened a cut under Maynard’s left eye, and he followed up with a thunderous slam the ignited the crowd. By the end of the round, Edgar added a stuffed takedown and a right to the face as he emphatically got back in the fight.“Just beat him up, you don’t need the knockout,” UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture told Maynard between rounds. “You just gave him that round.” The champion wasn’t about to play along though, as he again used his stick and move strategy to perfection while also keeping Maynard from putting him on his back. Maynard kept stalking, and with less than 90 seconds left, he began to get closer with his power shots as he again brought blood from the New Jersey native’s nose before landing a takedown in the final minute. But even on the mat, Edgar kept battling, locking in a guillotine choke just before the bell.Edgar went on the offensive with a

takedown and guillotine choke attempt to begin the fourth round, and while Maynard got up and escaped, the champion called on his wrestling for another takedown seconds later. After the two rose, Maynard - in the fourth round for the first time in his career – continued to chase Edgar, who made him pay when he got too close as he continued his stirring comeback. With five minutes to go, each shot carried the weight of the outcome on it, and each of these gutsy lightweights had their moments in the first half of the frame. In the second half, Maynard looked for the takedown but was turned back, and Maynard repaid the favor to Edgar, leaving this bout to be settled on the feet. With less than a minute left, Edgar tagged Maynard, Maynard fired back, and both were bloodied as they went toe-to-toe till the final bell.Edgar’s record now stands at 13-1-1; Maynard remains unbeaten at 11-0-1 with 1 NC.

For Saturday night’s UFC 125 co-main event, middleweight up and comer Brian Stann asked for Chris Leben, a gutsy move to say the least given the experience level of “The Crippler”. But the US Marine Corps veteran delivered when it counted, as he scored a stirring first round TKO win at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.Leben vs. Stann“I asked for Chris Leben because he is the toughest guy on the UFC roster,” said Stann. “That could have happened to either one of us tonight; it just happened to be my night.” The standup attack of Stann was sharp in the early stages of the opening round, leading Leben to take matters inside. Stann was able to turn the tables though, pushing Leben to the fence before breaking loose. Midway through the round a big right hand from Stann dropped Leben, but “The Crippler” was able to survive the ensuing onslaught. Stann kept coming though, dropping Leben a second time as they stood against the fence. After Leben rose again, a knee put the veteran down, and this time Stann’s follow-up barrage brought in referee Josh Rosenthal to halt the bout at the 3:37 mark. With the win, Stann improves to 10-3; Leben falls to 21-7.Vera vs. SilvaLight heavyweight contender Thiago Silva returned from a year long layoff with a clear cut three round unanimous decision victory over Brandon Vera. See post-fight interviewScores were 30-27 twice and 30-26 for Silva, who was sidelined since his January 2010 loss to Rashad Evans due to a back injury.

The fighters met in the center of the Octagon and engaged immediately, trading blows on the inside before breaking and re-engaging against the fence. With a minute gone, Silva turned around expectations by scoring a takedown, and he began firing off ground strikes while looking to improve his position. Vera tried to hold his opponent close in order to force a standup, but it was Silva who stayed active and got into side control. More strikes came raining down, none causing too much damage, but all scoring points for the Brazilian. At the bell, Silva taunted Vera to get up, and the two had to be separated by referee Steve Mazzagatti.Fired up, Vera came out throwing bombs to start round two, and Silva eagerly threw back as the crowd erupted. After this brief exchange, the two locked up against the fence, with Silva following up with a takedown. Silva fired away from the top position, and he remained there for the remainder of the frame, as he put another round in the bank. The two trade home run kicks to start round three, but after another quick exchange, Silva once again scored a takedown. Silva remained in control from the back position, but with only sporadic action, the fans were calling for a standup from Mazzagatti. In response, Silva opened up with punches and a series of slaps, adding insult to injury (Vera’s nose appeared to be broken) as the seconds ticked away on Vera’s third straight defeat. With the win, Silva improves to 15-2; Vera falls to 11-6.Diaz vs. KimKorean welterweight Dong Hyun Kim remained unbeaten, holding off a late

charge from Nate Diaz to win a close and hard-fought three round unanimous decision. Scores were 29-28 across the board for Kim, who improves to 14-0-1 with 1 NC; Diaz falls to 13-6.Diaz kicked off the bout with some crisp standup, an attack nullified by a Kim takedown. Kim fought well from the top position, controlling position while tossing in the occasional ground strike to keep Diaz honest. Kim taunted Diaz while taking short shots to the face, answering with a huge strike of his own. Diaz stayed busy from the bottom position, looking for submissions. Kim’s pressure was relentless though, and by staying busy, he kept himself out of trouble. With less than 20 seconds left, Diaz got back to his feet in a scramble, but wasn’t able to make a final statement before the bell.Again in the early stages of round two, Diaz’ standup game was working well, but he wasn’t able to avoid Kim’s takedown. And though Diaz was active from the bottom, Kim was controlling the action from the top with strikes and superior positioning. With 1:40 left, Diaz kicked his way free, only to end up on his back moments later. Diaz did fight his way free with less than 30 seconds left, the impending bell stopping any serious offensive retort.Diaz looked to control the grappling portion of the bout early in round three, pinning Kim to the fence. The stronger Korean fighter broke free fairly easy, and the two locked up. Diaz scored with knee to the head while Kim had his hand on the canvas, drawing a warning from referee Yves Lavigne and a break in the action. After the action restarted, Kim pushed the

action, getting the fight to the mat midway through the frame. Diaz battled gamely, almost catching Kim’s ankle, but the “Stun Gun” got loose. When the two stood, Diaz turned it on with his strikes at close range as he looked to finish, but despite his final charge, the Stockton native ran out of time.Guida vs. GomiLightweight contender Clay Guida got the big name scalp he was looking for in the main card opener, submitting former PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi in the second round. After a lack of offensive action for the first 90 seconds, Guida landed with a kick to the head that got the crowd roaring. A subsequent takedown attempt came up short, but Gomi was apparently stunned by the lightning fast attack. Flustered by Guida’s head and foot movement, Gomi was unable to find a home for his punches, as he repeatedly came up short. And while Gomi’s takedown defense was rock solid, his offense was non-existent. With less than a minute left, Guida broke through with a takedown, but ran out of time before he could press his advantage.Guida stood closer to “The Fireball Kid” in the early stages of round two, allowing Gomi to get off a few strikes, but nothing of any significance. Guida was in the same boat, but gradually, his feints would draw Gomi in and open him up for return fire, and with 90 seconds left in the round he got another takedown. Now in control on the mat, Guida patiently worked his ground game, locking in a guillotine choke that produced a tap out at the 4:27 mark. With the win, Guida improves to 28-8; Gomi falls to 32-7 with 1 NC.

Year 2010 is over. While we cherished a few movies, we also bashed a few left, right and centre. Now that it’s a thing of the past, let us look forward to the future. What can the audience expect from Bollywood in 2011?January would see the release of three big films for sure. The first in line is Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan starrer, “No One Killed Jessica”, then there is the Deol parivar’s, “Yamla Pagla Deewana” and the very talented Mrs. Aamir Khan aka Kiran Rao’s Dhobi Ghat. The trailers of these films are already on air and are creating quite a stir already.

February would see the release of the multi talented Vishal Bharadwaj’s Saath Khoon Maaf with Priyanka Chopra in a negative role for the second time in her career.March will see the release of Abhishek Bachchan starrer Game which is being produced by Farhan Akhtar. Abhishek is going to follow up his March release with Dum Maro Dum in April which is being directed by Rohan Sippy.April will see the release of Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor starrer Thank You, Akshay’s second film with Anees Bazmee after Welcome.May will see the release of three big

films- Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara which has got Hrithik in it, Ranbir’s Rockstar directed by Imtiaz Ali and Salman Khan’s Ready with Asin. This month gets interesting as all the three films are being released on the same date. Also, Saif Ali Khan is planning to release his pet project Agent Vinod in the same month too.Well the first half of the year is sure to see these releases, while the rest yet unscheduled are some pretty heavy ones.SRK will have both Ra.One and Don 2 releasing during the months of November and December. Hrithik’s Agneepath remake is scheduled towards the end of

next year as well and so is Akki’s Joker.Salman will be seen with Kareena in My Love Story. Kareena will be doing a film with Imran Khan- Short Term Shaadi, a KJo production. Imran is also doing a film with Katrina titled Mere Brother ki Dulhan under the Yash Raj banner. Katrina would be seen in Dostana-2.Then, there is the animated version of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai- Koochie Koochie Hota Hai. Also, there is Ranbir’s Barfee with Priyanka Chopra and the Goaian beauty Ileana.Come 2011, the audience are sure in for a heavy dosage of Hindi Cinema.

Another year draws to a close and every year Bollywood keeps saying the same, “hope at least next year brings us luck”. But, like the White Wizard says to Pippin, “It’s only a fools hope”.Year 2010 was pitched to see some of the biggest hits but alas! it just saw one (Dabanng) or may be two (Golmaal 3).So what are the ones that failed miserably despite being promoted extensively?Veer- A Salman Khan-Anil Sharma dud, Salman more than coped up for the miserable story he has written with Dabanng in the year’s second half.Teen Patti- Despite containing two of

the finest actors from the last century (Ben Kingsley and Amitabh Bacchan) from both Hollywood and Bollywood, none even bothered to notice this flick.Kites- Could have been a wonderful launch pad for Hrithik into Hollywood. But, why did you forget the Indian audience Roshan Sr.?Raavan- Mani Ratnam- A.R.Rahman-Aishwarya Rai-exotic locales, nothing could save this Mani Ratnam directorial. nuf said.We Are Family- The first of its kind official remake of a Hollywood classic (Step Mom), well KJo messed up the entire plot, nevertheless despite hiring

two of the finest actresses that Hindi cinema has seen.Anjaana Anjaani- Yet another film of RK bit the dust at the B.O. Except for the opening weekend, people remained anjaana-anjaani from the theatres screening the film.Action Replayy- A partial lift from the Hollywood comedy Back to the Future, well the live action went missing completely. Vipul Shah followed up last year’s failure (London Dreams) with another.Guzaarish- When will Sanjay Leela Bhansali stop painting a canvas and start directing something for the

celluloid? The finest performance by Hrithik to date went begging.Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey- Ashuthosh Gowarikar is having casting problems as well as adaptation problems. Harman last year and Abhishek this year. If it was Kimball Ravenswood in 2009, it was Do and Die this year.Apart from the above, there were movies like Badmaash Company, Lafangey Parindey, Raktha Charitra, Aisha, Break ke Baad and Hissss that had a dismal run at the BO.Well, hope against hope that 2011 brings a smile on Bollywood’s face!

Director: Farah KhanBanner: Three’s Company, UTV Motion Pictures, Hari Om ProductionsWriter: Shirish KunderMusic: Vishal ShekarCast: Akshay Kumar, Katrina Kaif, Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapoor, Sachin Khedekar, Aman Varma, Murli Sharma, Raghu Ram, Rajiv Laxman, Apara MehtaGrade: EWell, Farah Khan’s previous two films never had any logic in them, but they were entertaining to the core and of course there was the presence of SRK in both her previous attempts. Now, for her third, Tees Maar Khan, she breaks off from her favourite actor and ropes in Akshay. So, does she deliver?I’m afraid not. Tees Maar Khan leaves the audience perplexed as to why on earth did they ever buy a ticket to watch

the film! Well, they can’t be blamed though for their mistake, as the film was coming from Farah Khan and of course it had the Sheila ki Jawani factor associated with it.Why does this film fail to deliver? Let us see.The Plot: Seriously speaking, there is no plot. But, since I sustained the film for a 130 minutes, I’ll reveal what was not there, I mean what was there, Oh! Whatever.Akshay Kumar is born a conman, literally, he is born a conman. Akshay’s mother, played by the TV fame Apara Mehta is into watching films about dacoities and robbers while pregnant. The yet to be born Tabrez Mirza Khan learns the tricks the Abhimanyu way and becomes the most renowned conman, Tees Maar Khan.Cut to the next scene, the police has

seized stolen antiques weighing 10,000 kilos from two joined twins, played by Raghu Ram and Rajiv Laxman (MTv Roadies fame). These antiques are to be transported back to Delhi using a special train that wouldn’t be stopped anywhere unless it reaches the capital. So, police fear that the twins would try to claim the stolen treasure with the help of the internationally renowned conman Tees Maar Khan.TMK is approached by the twins just the way the police predict and he picks up the job. In a bid to steal the treasure, TMK plans to shoot a film in a village called Dhuliya via which the train is going to pass. For this purpose he ropes in the super star Aatish Kapoor (played by Akshaye Khanna) and the entire village to be a part of his film. The music by Vishal&Shekar is

passable apart from the number Sheila. Artists’ Analysis: Akshay Kumar, after having a memorable two years (2007-2008) at the B.O, he has failed to impress ever since Chandni Chowk to China. Katrina, just one word – Nahiiiiiiiiiiiin!A talented actor like Sachin Khedekar is wasted. The other cast involves Arya Babbar, Ali Asgar, Vijay Maurya, Vijay Patkar and senior artistes like Avtar Gill, Anjann Srivasata. Aman Varma and Murli Sharma play a gay couple. Akshaye Khanna and Anil Kapoor have done special roles and Sanjay Dutt does a voice over at the start of the film. Salman Khan appears in a khawali number.Unfortunately, the performances of all the artists is just dismal and only leaves the audience frustrated.

Fresher Looking WhitesYou should be able to restore your clothes to white (and not damage the fibres of the fabric) by soaking them them in lukewarm water and color safe or oxygen bleach for 24 hours, then rinse them with vinegar and water. Use one tablespoon of vinegar to one quart of water. Your clothes may be turning gray because you have hard water, and this diminishes the effectiveness of detergents, and often leaves a residue on clothing. If you think this is a case, you may want to add a powdered water softener to your wash, particularly when washing white clothes.Unshrink a SweaterThere is no guaranteed way to unshrink a sweater, but I have a few ideas for you to try. 1) Soak the sweater in hair conditioner and water solution, and pull gently to reshape, lay flat to dry. 2) Dissolve one ounce of borax in a couple of tablespoons of hot water, add the mixture to a gallon of warm water, immerse the garment. Pull the sweater gently into shape, and rinse in a gallon of warm water to which you have added 2 tablespoons of vinegar. 3) Dissolve two cups of non-iodized salt in enough hot water to cover the garment.

Let cool, and leave the sweater to soak in it for three hours. Wash it in mild suds, rinse three times, roll the sweater in towels, then reshape and let dry. Remove Gasoline Odor From ClothingTo remove the odor of gasoline from clothing, place the clothing in a large bucket of cold water. Add two cans of coke to the water and a box of baking soda. Allow the clothes to soak for 24 hours. Then, hang the clothes on a clothes line to air dry. Finally, place the dry garment into the washing machine and launder as usual. How To Remove Stickers and the AdhesiveSome adhesives are easy to get off. Say you need to get the label off that empty pickle jar. Scrape through the label a little and smear it with dish soap. Soak in hot, soapy water. The paper comes off, leaving just a little adhesive to scrape off. Easy stuff. Price tags and stickers are harder to remove. Citrus oil to the rescue! It’s a powerful dissolver, or solvent if you want to be scientific. Your store’s cleaning aisle has citrus-based cleaners as well as goo removers. Follow label directions. Has the sun baked tape or a sticker to the outside of your window? Visit the hardware store. They’ll advise you on the right kind of scraper.

BEAUTY TIPS

1.Outdated glasses/contact lens prescription: Anything that makes you squint like reading or working in a poorly lit room, or not updating your contact lens prescription leads to more fine lines and wrinkles around the eye area. Go and see an eye doctor.2.Steam rooms: We all love a good detoxifying sesh in a steam room or sauna, but limit your exposure to this extreme-heat because they decompose skin’s elastin and collagen. 3.Running (or any high-impact exercise): “While such exercise may benefit our hearts, it can cause the fat pads to slide south, and collagen and

elastin to break down. If you don’t enjoy running, try walking.4.Not sleeping: Okay, it’s not news that pulling an all-nighter makes your skin look like crud the next day, but did you know that chronic sleep deprivation leads to long-term skin probes? “Lack of sleep can be so stressful that it actually causes our bodies, including our skin, to generate free radicals. More free radicals mean you look older, faster.5.Tap water: Chlorine in tap water can strip the natural oils from skin and cause dryness and irritation, especially in the winter when there is less humidity in the air to balance it out.

It is well known for its smooth and durable operation, performance across the full torque curve, and precise shifting. The upgraded engine on The 2011 Chevy

Trailblazer adds more power and meets or exceeds all sound requirements. In addition, it is also quite fuel-efficient, a feature everyone likes. The engine is a Vortec 4.2-liter/ 256-cu. inch I6 with 275 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 275 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm. Four-wheel drive is available with all Trailblazers. For a large vehicle, The 2011 Chevy Trailblazer handles exceptionally well. This is a result of its five-link rear suspension, independent, double-A-arm front suspension and hydraulic power-assist rack-and-pinion steering. Chevy Trailblazers are given a comprehensive safety package with four-wheel vented disc antilock brakes with front aluminum dual piston calipers and dual-stage front airbags. The brakes use an advanced system of 12 specially tuned body mounts to isolate road inputs and noise, limiting vibration and harshness on any surface.

HEART DISEASE EIGHT CANCER SIGNS IDENTIFIED

DIET OF NUTS ‘MAKES YOU PILE ON THE POUNDS’

BROCCOLI JUICE MAY KEEP SKIN CANCER AT BAY

Coronary heart disease is the biggest killer in the world. But medical advances mean that having heart disease is no longer a death sentence and there are lots of things that you can do to reduce your risk. Understanding heart disease

The signs and symptoms of coronary heart disease, one of the most common diseases to affect the heart.Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the commonest diseases to affect the heart is. It’s usually caused by atherosclerosis, a build up of fatty materials within the walls of the arteries. What is CHD?In CHD, the arteries that supply the heart with oxygen and nutrients become narrowed by atherosclerosis restricting the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart, particularly during exertion when there are more demands on the heart muscle. What are the symptoms of CHD?The main symptom is angina, caused by insufficient oxygen reaching the heart muscle because of reduced blood flow. Angina is a feeling of heaviness, tightness or pain in the middle of your chest that may extend to your arms, neck, jaw, face, back or abdomen. The following symptoms are by no means always owing to CHD, and could be harmless or caused by other medical conditions. However, if you experience any of them it’s a good idea to make an appointment to see your doctor:•Unusual breathlessness when doing light activity or at rest, or breathlessness that comes on suddenly. •Palpitations - awareness of your heart beat or a feeling of having a rapid and unusually forceful heart beat, especially if they last for several hours or recur over several days and/or cause chest pain, breathlessness or dizziness. •Fainting - although not always a serious symptom, fainting is due to insufficient oxygen reaching the brain,

so you should report it to your doctor. •Fluid retention or puffiness (the medical term is oedema) is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tissues of the ankles, legs, lungs or abdomen, for example. Although a mild degree of ankle oedema may be quite normal - for example, on a hot day - it can be a sign that the heart isn’t pumping as well as it should (this is known as heart failure). Fluid retention in the lungs, or pulmonary oedema, can cause intense shortness of breath, and may be life-threatening. •Bluish-tinged fingernails or lips (known medically as cyanosis) can be the result of too little oxygen in the blood. •Fatigue is a common symptom of heart disease, but has numerous causes, including depression. It’s always worth seeing your doctor if you feel unusually tired, especially if this is combined with symptoms that can’t be explained. CHD: Causes and risk factorsThe most common cause is atherosclerosis, a build up of fatty materials within the walls of the arteries throughout the body, most importantly in the arteries to the tissues of the heart - the coronary arteries. During this process, the inner lining of the arteries becomes furred with a thick, porridge-like sludge (atheroma), consisting of fatty deposits of cholesterol, cell waste and other substances. These form raised patches on the artery wall - known as ‘plaques’ - that narrow the arteries, reducing the space through which blood can flow. At the same time, the blood becomes more prone to clotting. These growing plaques may block the delivery of nutrients to the artery walls, causing the arteries throughout the circulation to lose their elasticity. In turn, this can lead to high blood pressure, which also increases the risk of CHD.A heart attack occurs when one of the coronary arteries blocks completely. This final step usually happens when a plaque splits open for some reason, causing a blood clot to form on its surface that obstructs the flow of blood. It’s not yet understood why plaques split open, but inflammation seems to play a part. When the supply of oxygen and nutrients is completely blocked, the heart muscle and tissue supplied by that artery dies. Some people are particularly predisposed towards developing atherosclerosis, due to inherited genetic factors. They may have a family history of people dying at a young age from CHD. An unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, diabetes, high blood pressure and smoking all increase the risk.

Researchers have highlighted the eight unexplained symptoms that are most closely linked to cancer. The Keele University team also points to the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which include blood in urine and anaemia. The other symptoms are: rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, post-menopausal bleeding and abnormal prostate tests, reports the media. Cancer Research UK said unusual changes in a person’s health should be checked.

The figure for each symptom was calculated by combining the results of 25 previous studies. They found that, if the patient was below the age of 55, there were only two signs, which reached the ‘’one-in-20’’ threshold. These were a rectal prostate examination, which gave abnormal results, and a breast lump. After 55, but only in men, there was evidence that difficulty swallowing could be a sign of oesophageal cancer, while blood in the urine was highlighted as a particular concern for men and women aged over 60.

Dieters who snack on nuts, seeds or dried fruit could actually be putting on weight, rather than losing it, say researchers.Supermarke tOwnBrandGuide website, has found that nuts and seeds often contain unhealthy amounts of saturated fat and dried fruit is usually high in sugar.Just 100g of Brazil nuts contains 16.4g of saturated fat - three quarters of a woman’s recommended daily intake, while a handful of dried raisins contains 69g of sugar, more than three-quarters of the

recommended amount.Even pumpkin and sesame seeds contain high levels of saturated fat, it found. In comparison, 100g of Kit Kat chocolate bar contain 47.8g of sugar. The research comes as many people begin strict diet regimes as part of New Year resolutions.“New Year dieters who are tempted to stock up on things like fruit and nuts in order to avoid chocolate could find themselves putting on pounds,” website founder Martin Isark said.

Forget sunscreens, the thing that can actually protect your skin from UV rays is broccoli juice, say scientists.Scientists in the United States have been testing broccoli extract on human volunteers and mice, which showed their skin was protected against sunburn.Broccoli contains sulforaphane, an antioxidant, which helps stop sunburn and tumour development.Additionally, scientists in New Zealand have also suggested that extract from totara and manuka trees could act in a similar way to broccoli.Skin care specialist Kelly Curtis said mineral products had developed significantly since the “peanut butter-like” zinc available 30 years ago.“People see that it’s got titanium oxide

or zinc and it brings back memories of that thick, coloured stuff from the 1980s,” the New Zealand Herald quoted Dalton Kelly of the Cancer Society, as saying. But the products really have improved and by using physical blockers rather than chemical sunscreens, you are minimising the amount of chemicals going into your body.”Kelly is concerned people who buy new products with a high SPF rating may fall into a false sense of security.“The problem is, people put it on and think they are set for the day. They treat it like a shield of armour. But they still need to be re-applying it regularly, especially if they go for a swim,” added Kelly.

In this image provided by the Rockhampton Regional Council, water inundates the suburb of depot Hill at Rockhampton,

Australia, Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011. Residents of Rockhampton, cut off by some of the country’s worst flooding in decades are

being warned to stay out of the water, and not just because of the risk of being swept away: debris, snakes and even crocodiles

could also pose a danger. The Australian military on Monday raced to bring food and supplies to the flood-hit northern city of Rockhampton before it is cut off by rising waters, as the disaster claimed its third fatality. Up to 200,000 people are estimated to have been hit by the fast-flowing waters that have inundated 22 rural towns in the country’s northeast, across an area the size of France and Germany. The military was rushing food and medical supplies to Rockhampton, population 75,000, on Monday as the coastal city braced for floods which are expected to cut off hundreds of more homes. “Looks like Rockhampton’s in the middle of an inland sea,” Queensland Premier Anna Bligh said after flying over the area. “The amount of water coming down these river systems is nothing short of astonishing. “It is little wonder we’re seeing so much heartbreak and so much tragedy in many of our major towns and our smaller regional centres.” The airport to the regional hub was closed while floods blocked roads to the south and west, prompting concerns among officials that the large population centre could run low on food. “The affected area is greater than the size of New South Wales (state), with the worst still to come in communities like Rockhampton,” Bligh said. “Supplying them with food, ensuring that we keep them safe during this flood is

absolutely critical.” Prime Minister Julia Gillard offered emergency funds to those affected by the floods, including farmers more used to battling crippling droughts, as well as to small businesses. “When the floodwaters recede, we are going to see a lot of damage but we will obviously be working with the state government to rebuild that essential community infrastructure,” Gillard told reporters in Sydney.

“All in all, we know hundreds of millions of dollars are going to flow into Queensland.” Gillard, who toured some of the devastated areas Friday, said that for some communities these were “the biggest floods they have ever seen” and warned people to be aware of the risks of the fast-flowing waters. Police confirmed the third death since the floods were declared a disaster, that of a man who drowned after his vehicle was swept into a flooded river. His death follows that of a man who died after abandoning his boat as it took on water last Saturday and that of a woman who drowned as she was swept away by surging waters that swamped her car. Ten people have now died in flood-related accidents since November 30 -- including three whose vehicles were swept away, two people who attempted to swim in fast-flowing waters, a man who was knocked off a footbridge and a girl who drowned while trying to walk across a river. Queensland state assistant police commissioner Alistair Dawson has warned the emergency could drag on for a month, saying that, while parts of the state were in recovery mode, others were bracing for the worst.

An Alice Springs migration agent says the Federal Government is making it harder for Northern Territory employers to bring in skilled workers from overseas.Anke Nagel says the Immigration Department has been reviewing all the employer-sponsored visas from January 1 with the intention of implementing changes from July 1.Ms Nagel says the review is not designed to improve opportunities for people wanting to live and work in Australia.“They are not making it easier for migrants whether they are employer-sponsored or not,” she said.“The changes that are occurring are not there to facilitate migrants to come to Australia. It’s making it harder. It’s ensuring that really only the most skilled and most determined people are going to come.”Ms Nagel says the plan is to consolidate

a number of visa classes under temporary and permanent employer-sponsored visas. She says there are also plans to introduce a new points test for skilled migrant visa applications.“It really doesn’t affect employers as such except there might be more migrants actually approaching them that do not have enough points under the new points test [who are] looking for an employer to sponsor them to still be able to migrate to Australia,” she said.A spokesman for the Immigration Department says the skilled migration program is regularly reviewed to make sure it delivers the skills Australia needs at the time.He refuted claims that changes to the temporary and permanent employer-sponsored visa program will restrict migration.

The floods are taking their toll on the Queensland tourism industry. There was little property damage on the Discovery Coast of south-east Queensland, but the impacts of flooding have flowed into the tourism destination. At the peak of the crisis, the towns of Agnes Water and 1770 were isolated by floodwaters for several days. The area is now accessible via Miriam

Vale but operator Katherine Mergard says the damage has already been done. “Usually this is our busiest two to three weeks of the year and we’ve had a dramatic loss of business over this time,” she said.Meanwhile, there has been a drop in numbers at the Mon Repos Turtle Rookery at Bundaberg, with 2,000 fewer visitors than this time last year.

Australia’s Qantas airline hopes to resume its A380 flights to Los Angeles by mid-January, more than two months after an engine blowout forced the carrier to temporarily ground its superjumbo fleet.A Qantas spokesman said Wednesday that an exact date has not been set, but a schedule prepared for planning purposes has the Los Angeles flights resuming within weeks.“We are hopeful of recommencing the Los Angeles flight by January 17th , but have not confirmed a date at this time,” the spokesman said on condition of anonymity in accordance with company procedure.

Qantas grounded all six of its A380s for 19 days after a Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine disintegrated shortly after a flight took off from Singapore on Nov. 4, and other airlines that use that type of engine also suspended some services while checks were carried out.Preliminary reports said an oil leak caused a fire in the giant high-tech engine. In November, Qantas Airways resumed A380 flights on the other route that it uses the superjumbo, from Australia to London via Singapore. But CEO Alan Joyce said the Australia-U.S. flights would remain suspended while more tests were carried out.

Planes heavier on takeoffThe direct flights from Australia’s two largest cities of Sydney and Melbourne to Los Angeles are among the longest non-stop commercial flights in the world, and the A380s must carry more fuel than on other flights to make them. That means the planes are heavier when they take off, and need more thrust from the A380’s four engines. Qantas says it will not fly the Australia-U.S. routes until it is satisfied the extra thrust does not put unsafe stresses on the engines. The decision on returning the Qantas

A380s to the U.S. routes — among the most lucrative for the airline — comes as officials show signs of confidence that the problem that caused the blowout has been fixed. In late December, the European air safety regulator increased the number of flights that can be made by a Trent 900 engine before it must be inspected for signs of the type of problem that occurred on the Qantas plane.Qantas has launched legal action in Australia to sue Rolls-Royce over losses from the incident.

With cold weather expected to hit Metro Vancouver this week, Surrey RCMP are again advising the public to remain diligent when it comes to protecting themselves against auto theft.Every winter, the Surrey RCMP see a sharp increase in the number of ‘vehicle theft with keys’ reports when cold temperatures hit and people begin to leave their vehicles warming up unattended. Statistics show that the number of cars stolen with keys left in the ignition can sometimes increase by 150% during the winter months.“This is a trend we see every winter,” says Cpl. Mike Spencer, Surrey RCMP Auto Crime Team.

“Certain car thieves will actually target those who warm up their car and leave it unattended,” says Cpl. Spencer. “It is also very common to see with every theft of this nature that the victim will indicate that he/she ‘had just run inside to grab something’, only to come back out and see their car driving away.”Don’t be fooled by this crime of opportunity. If you choose to leave your vehicle running and unattended you may be a victim.Want a useful tip? Drive it, don’t rev it! Your vehicle’s engine will warm up a lot quicker if you simply start the engine, wait 30 seconds, and then drive away.

White Rock beach was crowded with thousands of people Jan.1, as the annual tradition of starting the new year with a dip in the ocean marked its 41st year.Mayor Catherine Ferguson led the countdown for the noon Polar Bear Swim, prompting around 500 people to take the icy plunge. Organizer Don Miller said the beautiful weather was likely a factor in the large number of participants (the event averages

300 to more than 500 people) some of whom dressed for occasion. “We had a number of people in costumes. Two of them were really made up with all kinds of makeup and other things. It’s always nice to have people like that around.”The tradition – hosted each year by Peace Arch Monarch Lions – also draws those who prefer to stay onshore. “We had at least 2,500 spectators down there – they were solid from the pier, to the rock, and beyond,” Miller said.Donations were collected for St. John Ambulance and Semiahmoo Peninsula Marine Group – both of which were onsite – and certificates were given to those who braved the water.“We thank everyone who turned out and hopefully see them again next year,” Miller said.

A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a man accused of selling tickets for the 2010 Olympics but never delivering them to almost 30 buyers. Thirty-one-year-old Sean McConnell Stuart of West Vancouver faces a number of charges.Police claim Stuart offered tickets for sale online for the opening ceremony and the men’s gold medal hockey game. They say

Stuart collected a 50 per cent down payment from most of his victims and promised to deliver the tickets when he got them from VANOC.But police say he never came through, and VANOC says he never had an account with the organization. He’s accused of collecting $60,000 from victims all over Canada, the US and as far away as Croatia.

Homeowners in northern and rural parts of BC now have a new tax benefit. Finance Minister Colin Hansen says it will especially help seniors.“With this new benefit, seniors could be

receiving benefit of up to $1045 in reduction to their property taxes,” explains Hansen. The homeowner grant is funded through carbon tax revenue, part of making the controversial tax revenue neutral.

The Vancouver Canucks are the top team in the NHL and Team Canada is in the Gold Medal Game at the World Junior Hockey Championship, so some people are getting the itch to strap on the skates.Barb Floden with the Vancouver Park Board says outdoor ice isn’t thick enough for

skating, so stay off of those ponds and lakes. She says it poses a major risk for people and pets who think it might be a good idea to venture out there.Warning signs are posted at traditional skating locations, while park rangers and lifeguards are patrolling the areas.

Many don’t realize what a hassel it can beDo you think about the dangers of using your debit card when you go to

pay for that carton of milk? You might want to because fraud is becoming an increasingly common problem for Canadians.Between 2008 and 2009, there was a 36 per cent spike in debit card fraud. The Consumers Association of Canada says most of us are well aware of the risks of credit card fraud, but few of us realize how much more of a hassle debit card fraud can actually be.The National Post reports banks won’t give you back the cash until they’re satisfied you weren’t involved and it can take weeks to get a new card.

B.C. residents are being urged to double-check any clover sprouts they may have in the fridge.Sprouters Northwest of Kent, Wash., has voluntarily recalled various sizes of its clover sprouts and clover sprout varieties with a “best by” date of Jan.16

or earlier. The sprouts may be contaminated with Salmonellosis, a common infection that can cause diarrhea, fever and vomiting.U.S. health officials say the sprouts were sold in B.C. and several American states.
