FILARIASIS COMBINED WITH LEPROSY OF THE RUBBER TREE HEVEABRASILIENSIS

    L.Thankamma

Have you ever come across people suffering from Filariasis? A mosquito bourn disease mostly

expressed on the lower limbs of human beings it was most common in a place known as Chertallaiin Alappuzha district of Kerala State in India. It was rather endemic to the place on the coastal belt

and it Was most serious before few decades once the coconut husk retting for extraction of fibre

for coir manufacture was most prevalent there. The limbs of the affected develop swellings with

a good number of swellings and protrusions and bulging over it resulting in very severe and

    unrecoverable deformity.

Have you ever come across a leprosy patient? If the symptoms of both the above diseases are

combined together what will be the appearance of such an affected limb?If you can imagine the

lower limb of such a patient definitely it will resemble the stem portion of a rubber tree showing

symptoms of TAPPING PANEL DRYNESS disorder of the rubber tree. Please examine the followingfigures.

In a plot with rubber while the harvesting operation is going on at alternate daily frequency few

trees start continuous dripping of latex with low rubber content for longer duration. Gradually the

latex becomes more dilute and later the production stops completely. The bark dries up turns

into brownish discolouration and later on swellings and bulging develop with woody burr

formations whereby the tree develops severe deformity which is irrecoverable damage to the

tree. If the frequency of tapping continues to be the same the number of affected cases will

increase still further . Even if the frequency of tapping is decreased to once in three days or still

further the problem will continue to appear on more and more trees . Application of yieldstimulants will further aggravate the situation apart from the hazards it will cause to the

environment. Normally the incidence of the TPD disorder varies from forty to even hundred

percent of the trees at times.

The affected trees condition will further deteriorate resulting in irrecoverable damage. As a

consequence of this the number of tappable trees gets reduced significantly and the productivity

also gets reduced to the minimum whereby the tappers quit the field in search of greener

pastures resulting in very severe scarcity of labourers .A total of 56 percent of labourers have

been reported to have left the field which has further aggravated the situation at present.

This most serious and hazardous malady telling heavily production and hence on the future of

the Rubber Plantation industry itself is known as

TAPPING PANEL DRYNESS [TPD ] OR BROWN BAST

It has been described as a DISEASE OF UNKNOWN ETIOLOGY or RATHER AN ENIGMATIC

    DISORDER!

In the past much effort has been made to prove the exact cause of the disorder but of no use and

at present the syndrome has been tagged as a disorder of unknown etiology.

    But is it really so?

    NO. Never.

The exact cause of the serious disorder is no more unknown.

It is very well known from 1996 onwards. What is the exact cause of Tapping Panel Dryness

Disorder the Filariasis combined Leprosy syndrome of the rubber tree It is nothing but THE

UNSCIENTIFIC RUBBER TAPPING TECHNOLOGY or THE TERMINATOR TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED BY

H.N. RIDLEY DURING 1890_91 being practised all-round the rubber growing countries the world

    over.

It is the Downward Tapping on vertical panel, totally against the very Anatomy of the tree bark

and physiology of latex flow .Really a shame for the scientific community the world over in the field

of research on rubber harvesting technology .

The direction of latex flow in the bark is always downwards the canopy functioning as the source

and the root system as the sink In the existing system of DVT the direction of tapping is always

downwards , that is away from the source and towards the sink! While the tree is growing up

thereby the source of latex is also correspondingly growing up, the direction of tapping proceeds in

the reverse indirect direction thereby resulting in total wastage of the source above1.25 m. And

at the same time heavily overexploiting the portion below that . The portion below 1.25 m height is

exposed to double exploitation , it has to supply latex downwards to the root system throughout

continuously, at the same time it is forced to produce latex towards the upward direction as well

so as perform its normal function of healing the wound induced. This double work induced is

beyond its normal capacity and when this over exploitation is beyond its capacity to tolerate the

tree starts to react by the expression of tapping panel dryness as it has no other go. First by

pleading, please dont taxme too much and later on fed up with the intolerable over exploitation

its starts offhand protest saying, no more latex can I produce now, not even a drop. A totally non

cooperation struggle indeed. But as a consequence of total absence of latex in the whole bark area

the physiology is completely changed and consequently the deformity results.

Hence tapping panel dryness or TPD IS NO MORE A DISEASE OF UNKNOWN ETIOLOGY

    THE ETIOLOGY IS WELL KNOWN.

IS THERE A REMEDY FOR THE DISORDER NAMELY TAPPING PANEL DRYNESS?

Yes Definitely there is. It is nothing but The INNOVATIVE RUBBER TAPPING TECHNOLOGY NAMELY

INCLINED UPWARD TAPPING TECHNOLOGY-IUT. Beyond totally preventing TPD , IUT IS CAPABLE

OF BRINGING IN A MULTITUDE OF BENEFITS SUCH AS AWHITE REVOLUTION AND GREE N

REVOLUTION COMBINED ENSURING CONVERSION OF RUBBER CULTIVATION INTO A TOTALLY

    ORGANIC FARMING AS WELL.
