Abstract

The world, as we k now, will suddenly come to a screeching halt. The predictions about the end

of the world are alleged to be prophecies by "Ancient Mayans" whose "astronomically precise"

calendar supposedly terminates on 21 December or 23 December 2012.

A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that, during this time, the planet and its

inhabitants may under go a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era, however in scientific aspect we have real concer ns these days, like

rain, global Warming.

Thus the ³end of the world´ is a topic which leads to a never ending debate.

Supporting theories

The reason why this particular theory relatingto the end of the world has gained so much

attention is due to the fact that this particular

date and year have a whole lot of significance

in many different cultures and religions and

many different scientists and governments

around the world.

A lot of reasons are put forward by those who

propagate this theory. Some of these reasons

have been mentioned below:

THE MAYAN CIVILIZATIONAccording to the ancient Mayan civilization

this is the final day of the earth and their

calendar ends on this very day. The Mayans

lived in Central America from 6th to 9th

century A.D and had achieved a great deal of

advancement in astronomical studies. They

had great interest in time keeping and their

calendars were so incredibly precise that theycould study the interlocking lunar, solar and

planetary time scales to predict solar and

lunar eclipses thousands of years in advance.

Hence many astronomers dare not doubt their

ability to make accurate astrological

predictions. In addition even the ancient

Egyptians believed this year to be very critical,

crucial and pivotal for mankind.

The Chinese oracle Í Chingµ predicts the end

of history on this very date. It is the oldest

Chinese text available and is also called the

book of changes.

Sumerians and Babylonians and is believed to

Mars. It is now expected to move past our

solar system again sometime in 2012 and

cause the melting of glaciers, huge tidal waves

sun from around the globe have predicted the

most intense solar maximum in fifty years tooccur during this year. Normally due to a

cyclic energy output the sun remains stable

but at present many solar storms and flares are

destabilizing it. As a result more and more

solar radiations bombard the earth and this

condition will get much worse by 2012.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANOES

There is a national park in the USA famousfor its thermal springs and geysers. It rests

atop the world·s biggest volcano which has a

pattern of erupting every 650,000 years. This

eruption is now overdue by many years and

scientists have noted underground pressure

buildup in that area. A massive eruption is

now expected to occur in 2012 which would

fill the atmosphere with so much smoke so

that sunrays reaching the earth would be

blocked and the earth would be plunged into

winter that would last for several thousands of years.

THE SHIFT IN EARTHS

MAGNETIC FIELD

The earth is surrounded by a magnetic field

that deflects radiations coming from the sun.

According to geophysicists during the year

2012 the earth·s entire mantle is expected to

shift rapidly due to which the position of the

earth·s poles will change. This reversal is

expected to result in an increased absorption

of radiations into the earth·s atmosphere

which will lead to worldwide disasters such as

droughts, floods, hurricanes, tsunamis,

earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, famines and

global warming. According to many evenAlbert Einstein and Merlin warned people of

these happenings.

THE EXTRAORDINARY

ALLIGNMENT

The entire Milky Way, including the earth, is

expected to align at the galactic equator on

this day, this is a rare event that occurs every

25,800 years. An enormous black hole isthought to exist at this point called the dark

rift and the result of this extraordinary

alignment is expected to be disastrous.

THE PARTICLE ACCELERATOR

The largest particle accelerator is being built

by scientists in Europe, it is basically a 27km

long tunnel designed to smash atoms. Many

concerns have arose regarding its operation

since it has been rumored to have led to thecreation of mini black holes and if its

functioning is to continue then by 2012 the

situation will have become very bleak.

INTERPRETATIONS OF PHYCISTS

According to many physicists who have made

use of simple mathematical rules that ensure a

99% accuracy of answer the earth is long

overdue of a major catastrophic event.

PREDICTIONS OF THE WEB-BOT

PROJECT

The web-bot project is an internet based oracle

consisting of a series of automated bots which

began in the 1990s. It scans the entire World

Wide Web for hints of future by analyzing the

unconscious mood of the world. It was able to

successfully predict catastrophes such as the

9/11 terrorist attacks, tsunami and hurricane

Katrina. It has now predicted a series of

global cataclysms of epic proportions which

will reach their peak in 2012.

RELIGIOUS ASPECTS

The Quran had predicted the final end of the

world ´Qayamatµ and so has the bible

foretold the approach of the apocalypse,

Armageddon, the final battle between goodand bad, and doomsday. Many of the

indications pointed out to occur before the

onset of this disaster have been experienced

and therefore many have started believing in

these predictions.

Contradictions

While many remain convinced of the world

ending on the 21st of December 2012 those

who entirely reject this theory and label it to

be false also do exist. According to them

many similar doomsday predictions have been

made in the past, but none have proved to be

true. They claim this theory was falsely

sensationalized by the makers of the film

´2012µ as a marketing strategy in order that

the impact and appeal of their film may

increase.

NASANASA has strongly rejected this theory and

claimed that no convincing evidence or

scientific proof has been presented to back up

this theory. According to a report released on

their internet site false claims on their behalf

have been made supporting this theory. They

then presented the following points as their

reasons for not believing this theory:

No purported large object such as

Niburu headed towards the earth exists.

Had it actually existed its presence should

have had been detected decades ago by the

technology we have at our disposal and by

now it should have been visible to the naked

eye.

The activity of the sun and reversal of

poles is a cyclic natural process that does

not indicate any worrisome astronomical

events in 2012.

The earth is experiencing no

important gravitational pull from any

galactic object except for the sun and moon.

No major planetary alignment is expected to

occur for the next few decades and the earth

is not expected to cross the galactic plane.

Even if any of these events is to occur its

effect on the earth would be negligible.

The alignment of the earth and sun

with the center of the Milky Way is an

annual event which has never led to anyconsequences.

The earth is always subject to hits by

comets and asteroids but big hits are rare.

Scientists have already determined that no

threatening asteroid hit is to be expected in

the near future as yet.

The Mayan calendar does not end on

this day; rather this day marks the end of a

long count period that then leads to the

beginning of another long count period. All

cycles therefore just turn over and start

again, marking the beginning of a new era.

In the end they concluded by saying that the

probability of the world ending on the 21st of

December is just as much as it is to end on

any other randomly chosen day.

Conclusion

The truth relating to this theory may very well never be predicted. We henceneed to not panic and expect the best but prepare for the worst. We all should

embrace ourselves for any likely outcome, prepare for after the end of the

world and side by side need not give up, continue our daily lives as normal

and live to the fullest till the end of time, be it on the 21st of December 2012

or any other day. Will we experience a new beginning or will we bear witness

to the end of the world is a question only time will answer.
