Dear Colleague,Welcome to the 17th International Conference on Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies. The CRRT Conference continues to provide a comprehensive coverage of the rapidly developingfield of Critical Care Nephrology and CRRT. It highlights the recent advances in our understand-ing of pathophysiology of critical illness, acute kidney injury, emerging strategies in themanagement of sepsis, multiorgan failure, development and use of biomarkers, technical advances inCRRT and the appropriate utilization of these techniques.

This year's program presents exciting new developments and evidence for hemodynamic monitoring, fluid management, dialysis timing, and extracorporeal support for critically ill patients. A mix ofinvited lectures, pro-con debates, interactive workshops, tutorials, poster sessions and paneldiscussions are planned to continue the tradition of multidisciplinary interactions.

Again this year we are offering a Pre-Conference AKI Workshop titled: “Changing Paradigms inAcute Kidney Injury: From Mechanism to Management”. The workshop will provide a com-prehensive review of the most recent developments in the field. Topics include, mechanisms, pathwaysof AKI and its effects on other organs, biomarkers and their applications and the findings from therecent clinical trials. We hope that this course will provide participants an opportunity to interactwith experts in the field and emerge with a better understanding of this rapidly evolving area.

2012 Conference Topic Highlights:• Organ Dysfunction in the Critically Ill Patient

Emerging Concepts in Organ Cross-talk, Sepsis, Microcirculation &Oxidative Stress, Infections• Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)

Pathophysiology, Microcirculation, Mechanisms of Injury and Repair, Biomarkers Targets forEarly Intervention, Cardiorenal and Hepatorenal Syndrome, Long Term Outcomes

• Controversies in Management of the Critically Ill PatientFluid Management, Augmented Renal Clearance, Risk Stratification, Non-Invasive Monitoring, Blood gas and Electrolyte Disorders, End-Of Life Care

• Challenges and Controversies in Renal Support & CRRTWhen to Start and Stop, What Dose of Dialysis, Fluid Management, Type of Anticoagulant, Pharmacokinetics of Antimicrobials, Nutritional Support, Quality Measures, New Techniques, Acid Base Problems, Intradialytic Hypotension

• Biomarkers for Management of Critically Ill Patients Risk Stratification, Surveillance, Diagnosis, Targeted Intervention and Prognosis

• Special Sessions for Nurses and Allied PersonnelCompetency Assessment, Ethical Dilemmas and End of Life Care

• Special Pre and Post Conference WorkshopsFundamentals of CRRT, Emerging Research in AKI, Hands On training for CRRT Devices,Organization of CRRT Programs, Pediatric Hands-On Workshop, Hemodynamic Monitoring, Ultrasound and Vascular Access Placement

As always, we hope to provide the right environment to foster learning and mutually beneficial com-munications and collaborations. We are pleased that you have joined us to share your knowledge andexperience, as it is through multidisciplinary interactions that we will gain a better understanding of crit-ical illness and it is only through our collective efforts that we will improve the lives of our patients.

On behalf of the organizing committee we are happy to welcome you to San Diego for ourSeventeenth Anniversary of the CRRT Conference.

PW1: Changing Paradigms in Acute Kidney Injury:

$250 / $220From Mechanisms to Management (see separate handout for schedule) Acute Kidney Injury is a rapidly evolving area where several advances have been made in understanding themechanisms and pathways of AKI and its effects on other organs. Recent identification of biomarkers has pro-vided new tools and techniques to characterize this disorder. This pre-course will provide a comprehensivereview of the most recent developments in the field and describe emerging knowledge from basic and trans-lational research applicable to clinical care.

CRRT Conference Registration NOT Required for this workshop** A $30 discount will be given to attendees that register for the CRRT Conference (valid for full price reg-istrations only.)

HW1: Fundamentals of CRRT $185This workshop offers an introduction to CRRT techniques and is developed to provide a core set of informa-tion on the principles and practice of CRRT. The operating characteristics of CRRT techniques for solute andfluid management, drug management will be discussed along with the potential applications of these tech-niques. Requirements for developing a successful CRRT program and selecting machines will also bedescribed.____________________________________________________________________TUESDAY - Half Day Hands-On Elective Workshop $110Tuesday, February 14 8:00am-12:30pm (includes AM break & 12:30 lunch)HW2: GAMBRO Hands-On Physician’s Workshop:

Practical CRRT - The Nuts and BoltsThrough case studies, lecture and Prismaflex System hands-on practice, this workshop will provide prac-tical approaches to prescribing and delivering CRRT with Gambro’s leading CRRT system. CME credits do not apply to HW2Presented by: Luis Alvarez, MD, PhD, Stanford University Medical Center ___________________________________________________________________________FRIDAY - Post-Conference Elective Workshops (choose one) $110 eachFriday, February 17 2:00pm-5:30pm - HW6 Starts at 1:30 (includes 1:00pm lunch & PMbreak )

HW3: Pediatric Hands-On Workshop This workshop will focus upon the practical aspects of care including clinical program development, dis-cussion of various models of ICU and Nephrology medical nursing care and hands on machine setup andoperation.

HW4: Hemodynamic Monitoring and Use of DrugsCritically ill Patients require frequent assessments and monitoring of hemodynamic and respiratory param-eters to optimize stability and guide ventilator support. Several techniques are now available and utilizedto manage patients including devices to assess the microcirculation, volume responsiveness and cardiacperformance. This workshop will cover the principles and strategies for hemodynamic and microcircula-tory monitoring in critically ill patients.

HW5: Essentials for Developing, Nurturing and Growing a CRRT ProgramSuccessful CRRT programs require careful planning, nurturing and ongoing monitoring for growth andeffectiveness.. This workshop will cover the key elements for building and enhancing a program. Topics tobe covered include developing a multidisciplinary team, creating tool kits for training, assessments andmonitoring effectiveness of the program, dealing with administration, financial considerations and strate-gies for program growth.

HW6: Introduction to Critical Care Ultrasonography (starts at 1:30)CCUS or critical care ultrasonography is an ultrasonography examination performed and interpreted by inten-sivist at the bedside to establish the diagnosis and guides procedures, locate a target organ or a disease specificcondition. It serves as a complement to CXR, CT, MRI, Echo or other imaging modalities. This intro workshopis a 3.5 hour workshop that includes a 1 hour intro lecture, 1 hour reviewing normal and abnormal images, and a 1.5 hour hands-on section. The components of this workshop are: abdominal (kidney, bladder, IVC andaorta); thoracic( lung and pleural space); vascular (vascular access and DVT).
