    GUJARAT SPACE MAKINGCRAFTS CLUSTERMAPPING ANDEVALUATION

Crat Clusters aregroups ointer-related skil ls or guilds or peoplerelated directly orindirectly to a particular crat orm.

Crats portray thesocio-cultural abric oany region. It represents thehistorical, religious, political, economical and traditional ethos oa province. In India, through centuries cratrelated guilds or clusters and their inter dependency havebeen thecornerstones oart &architecture, tradeand commerce.Dierent crat groups areoten ound inter-related andin present timecan bedefned as Crat clusters and sub-clusters.

Cluster ormation in Crat Sector is based on certain key elements: Similar or related vocation. Geographical proximity. Inter-related skil ls or knowledgebase. Key RolePlayers

Craft ClusterMappingThecluster mapspecifes all related and supportingelements oa cluster.Clusters Mapincludes Primary key Players that aretheartisans followed by suppliers or serviceprovidersospecialized inputs such as materials, machinery, services, and providers ospecializedinrastructure.Quiteoften, clusters also extend to customers and laterally to manufacturers ofcomplementary products and to small scaleindustries related by skil ls,technologies,or common inputs. Finally, clusters includegovernmental and other institutions such asuniversities,standards-settingagencies,think tanks, vocational trainingproviders, andtrades associations, which providespecialized training, education, information, research, and technical support.Craft Clusteringis strongly aected by threemajor factors, any ofwhich may actually besucient to set upa geographical concentration process and promotecluster growth andcompetitiveness.

Theseactors can beidentifed as beingstrongly connected to cluster development.

    GUJARAT SPACE MAKINGCRAFTS MAPPING: PROCESS

SpaceMaking CraftsClusterStrategiesSpaceMakingCraft Cluster Mappingand Evaluation is themethodology to identify CraftsClusters and conduct a detailed diagnostic study or urther development and uplitmentothesector.

Thekey aspects ocluster-based strategies consist o:

1.Phase1-Mobilization:Cluster Mapping& Buildinginterest and participation.2.Phase2-Diagnosis:Identifyingand deningthecluster then identifyingthestrengths

and weaknesses ofthecluster.3.Phase3-CollaborativeStrategy:Identifyingtheactions required to promotethe

development ofthecluster in association with themain stakeholders in thecluster.Thisalso includes design intervention and technology innovation process.

    4.Phase4-Implementation:Implementingthoseactions.

SpaceMaking CraftsofGujarat has over past few centuries gonethrough stages ofevolution as well as decline.Crafts Clusters aredynamic and portray a recognizablelifecycle.Thelifecycleis often described in dierent ways but can berepresented simply as acyclical process containingour stages:

Embryonic clusters thoseat theearly stages ofgrowth. Established clusters thoseperceived as havingroom for further growth. Matureclusters thosethat arestableor will nd further growth dicult. Decliningclusters thosehavereached their peak and arefail ingor decliningclusters

at this stagearesometimeableto reinvent themselves and enter thecycleagain. Dead Clusters-Thosewhich historically existed in a region but with timehaveceased

    to subsist.

SpaceMaking CraftsClusterMethodologyFor Crafts Cluster Mappingand Evaluation,DICRChas created a methodology for uniforminormation collection and evaluation.

Phase1: DeskResearch-PreField Study Historical study oftheregion CreateDistrict Proles in relation to SpaceMakingCrafts Enlist Government Bodies related to this sector Enlist NGOs in theregion Pre-eld research on crafts oftheregion Research on architectureoftheregion

Phase2: Field Study Identiy crat orms related to spacemaking Crafts cluster survey Artisans survey Institutional survey and relation building
