Athletic Training and Conditioning

The Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physicial Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic Trainer Karin Damon, Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Dana Baffuto.

The fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice.

In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athlete’s seasonal fitness needs.

Dinu Dan recently finished his sixth year with the Centenary College women’s volleyball program. In his five seasons with Centenary, the volleyball program has made tremendous strides toward becoming a conference and regional competitor.

In 2011, Centenary returned to the Colonial States Athletic Tournament, earning the fifth seed in the CSAC Tournament. The Cyclones fell in the first round match versus Baptist Bible College 3 games to 1, ending the season 15-20 and 7-5 in CSAC play. The Cyclones won their first five CSAC matches, giving them a leg up on the conference. Centenary would slide a bit in the back half of the season before finishing on a three game winning streak.

Coach Dan’s team finished the season ranked fourth in the nation in aces per set. Jelena Markovic was a key factor in that area as she was the nation’s leader in aces per set wit 1.65 and became Centenary’s all-time aces leader with 356. Markovic was rewarded for her achievements bein named the CSAC Player of the Year in additon to being placed on the First Team All-Conference.

In addition to Markovic, Devon Paffendorf was named to the Second Team All-Conference and the CSAC All-Sportsmanship Team in 2011, her senior season. Kelsey Walter, another senior finished her stellar career with 2,076 digs. Erika Chu was another Cyclone who reached the top of the Cenenary leader charts when she became the school leader in all-time blocks with 210.

The 2010 season saw the team come a game short of its second consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament. Despite an extremely tough schedule, the team was able to reach double-digits in wins for a program-record fourth-consecutive season. CC saw three of its players receive All-CSAC accolades, a program-first. Sophomore Jelena Markovic, the 2009 CSAC Rookie of the Year, took home First Team All-CSAC honors, as did junior Devon Paffendorf. Fellow classmate Kelsey Walter was named Honorable Mention. It also marks the first time in program history that two players were named to the First Team in the same season.

Paffendorf finished the season with 484 kills. That total led the CSAC and set a new single-season Centenary record. Markovic led the Cyclones with 755 assists, the second-highest single-season total in Centenary history. Walter finished with 543 digs, a single-season team record. She is now the program’s all-time leader in that category, with 1,506 for her career.

Through the course of the season, the Lady Cyclones competed in eight matches that went to the fifth and deciding set, finishing 2-6 overall in those contests. Despite the tough non-conference schedule, the team was 5-5 in conference action on Saturday, Oct. 30, when it hosted Philadelphia Biblical in what amounted to be a one-game playoff for the final spot in the CSAC Tournament. CC dropped a hard-fought first set, 26-24, and eventually succumbed to the Crimson Eagles, losing the match 3-0. Off the court, seven volleyball players earned CSAC All-Academic Team honors.

In 2009, CC earned a berth to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament for the first time in five years, thanks to a 7-4 CSAC record, marking a program-record for conference wins. The team fell in three closely fought sets at Baptist Bible, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-19. That left the Cyclones 15-17 on the season and set them up for an even better year in 2010.

Freshman Jelena Markovic was named CSAC and Centenary Rookie of the Year and also earned Second Team All-CSAC honors. The team also achieved success off the court, finishing with a team GPA above 3.3 to earn an American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. Moreover, eight student-athletes were named to the CSAC All-Academic Team.

Dan has led the team to double-digit victory marks in three consecutive seasons for the first time in school history. In 2008, Victoria Rice earned All-CSAC Honorable Mention accolades. The 11 victories two years ago marked the first time in the program’s history that the program reached double-figure wins for a season.

Prior to coming to Hackettstown in the 2006, Dan was the head women’s volleyball coach at Long Island University, where in two seasons he totaled a mark of 40-28. In addition to the tremendous record, he took the Blackbirds to the Northeast Conference (NEC) championship game in 2002, their first appearance in the NEC Playoffs in nine years. The women then followed that with an appearance in the semi-finals in 2003.

Prior to his two seasons with LIU, from 1996-2001 Dan was the head women’s coach at Pace University. He was a two-time AVCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year while leading the program to an impressive 148-60, including two NCAA Division II Quarterfinal appearances in 1998 and 2000. The Lady Setters also notched four consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Championships (1997-2000) and were NE-10 regular-season champs in 1997 and 2000. While at Pace, Dan was named both the NE-10 Conference Coach of the Year and the AVCA Division II Northeast Coach of the Year in the 1998 and 2000 seasons. Entering the 2009 season he holds a career record of 258-202.

Dan’s coaching career began in 1990 with the girl’s volleyball team at Montclair High School. He then continued on to Montclair State and Rutgers in 1991, as an assistant. Then in 1995 he took over the head coaching responsibilities at College of St. Elizabeth before moving to Hunter in 1996. The change for him was that at Hunter College and at Rutgers, Dan worked with both institutions’ men’s programs.

A native of Romania, Dan has numerous years of playing experience to go along his wealth of coaching knowledge. Before he began his college coaching career, he participated in volleyball tournaments all across Europe and played for a Division I professional team in Romania. Along with his abilities in the sport of volleyball, Dan has also competed in marathon running, specifically at the 1990 Goodwill Games in Seattle.

Dan holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Administration Recreation from Kean University in 1996, along with a Diploma of Engineering from Romania. He is a long-time practitioner of the Japanese style of Martial Arts known as Kyokushnkai. He holds a Black Belt in Kyokushnkai and has owned his own dojo in Romania. In addition, Dan was Romania’s Amateur National Tennis Champion and currently is a member of the USTP (United States Tennis Professionals). In 2011, Dan won gold medals in the New Jersey Garden State Olympic Games in singles and mixed doubles. He continues to work with adults and children teaching the game of tennis.

He is the founder of the NYC/NJ Volleyball Open Court (VOC) Experience housed at the Armory Tennis Center in Manhattan (Harlem), N.Y.

Dan also works outside of the athletic realm, serving as a coordinator of Body/Mind Empowerment Therapy in Bloomfield, N.J. There he plans and implements therapy programs for specific disabilities such as spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.

Devon Paffendorf joins the Cyclones staff after a four-year career playing under Head Coach Dinu Dan.

As a student-athlete, Paffendorf served as a three-time co-captain while earning two All-Conference honors. She currently sits in the Centenary College record books as the All-Time leader in games played (457), kills (1,293), and second in kills per game (2.83) while setting a single-season record in 2010 with 484 kills and 4.4 kills per game.

Season Preview The 2012 Volleyball team looks forward to an exciting season as Head Coach Dinu Dan’s squad returns fresh off a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament appearance, while also returning the Nation’s leader in aces per set, Jelena Markovic.

The Cyclones finished 2011 with a 7-4 CSAC record and 15-20 overall, earning the fifth seed in the CSAC Tournament before falling to Baptist Bible College. Along the way, Centenary put together three winning streaks of at least three matches highlighted by a four match winning streak in which the Cyclones only dropped one set.

While the Cyclones have high hopes for the 2012 season, Coach Dan does have some large shoes to fill with the school’s All-Time Dig leader, Kelsey Walter, and the school’s All-Time Kill leader, Devon Paffendorf graduating. Both were integral parts of the team as Walter served as the libero, with

Paffendorf finishing Cyclones’ rallies up front as an outside hitter. Coach Dan understands the loss of Walter and Paffendorf, but also knows the team is moving forward.

“They are definitely a big loss in the sense that we miss them and that they performed so well. We aren’t looking to replace Kelsey and Devon; we are just looking for people to step in and take their responsibilities.”

Centenary may miss Paffendorf ’s performance on the court, however the Cyclones will not need to look far to use her experience and knowledge as she has moved over to the bench as Coach Dan’s assistant coach.

“It’s a completely different perspective on the game going from the inside to the outside and being on the sidelines. I am enjoying being able to help. I can see from the outside if something is not quite right and help fix an approach or whatever else I see,” says Paffendorf.

This year the Cyclones will be led by Markovic who took home 2011 CSAC Player of the Year honors after leading the conference and nation in aces per set. Markovic, a setter, recorded 197 aces while tallying 305 kills and 460 assists last season. Joining Markovic at setter is Kelli McMenamin, Centenary’s top setter last year, setting up 502 kills for the Cyclones.

With Paffendorf moving off the court, Coach Dan will look to Erika Chu to provide much offense up front. Last season Chu was responsible for 248 kills offensively, while leading the Cyclones in blocks with 72 en route to setting the Centenary school record in All-Time Blocks.

Switching from outside hitter to libero for 2012 will be Myriah Jade. Jade, an all-around performer for the Cyclones recorded 201 digs, 78 kills, and 60 aces. Also returning for the Cyclones are outside hitters, Chelsea Hoffmann, Margaret Joy, libero Amanda Metauten, and middle hitter Shantise Parker.

Coach Dan will rely on the addition of six freshmen to step in and make an impact with Jaylon Blackford, Dominique Martin, Vanessa McKellar, and Yentl Monet Oliver as outside hitters and Melyssa Pickett as an opposite hitter.

A key aspect of this year’s team will be the versatility of the team. Coach Dan says he will implement different systems and strategies based on what the match dictates, stating the flexibility will prove to be an advantage throughout the season.

Centenary will begin the season at the Greyhound Premiere Invitational at Moravian College, followed by the Muhlenberg College Tournament, sure to test the Cyclones right away.

“We always schedule tournaments early in the season to help create team unity and to put oil in the engine so-to-say,” says Dan. “We like scheduling tough matches and tournaments to give our team the experience against top competition.”

Centenary College Turf Fund“It is time to take Cyclone Athletics to the next level.” That was the message of

WPLJ broadcaster Joe Nolan at the official launch of The Athletic Turf Field Project on January 29, 2011.

Through The Cyclone Athletic Fund, Centenary plans to construct a new artificial turf field that will serve the Men’s and Women’s Soccer and Lacrosse teams as

well as Baseball. The new field, which can even be used in inclement weather, will help propel the teams to greater levels of competition and national recognition.

Colonial States Athletic ConferenceAbout the CSACAbout the CSACThe Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) – formerlyknown as the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) – wasformed to meet the needs of small, private, four-year col-leges in eastern Pennsylvania. As the institutions’ athletic pro-grams continued to grow, it became increasingly necessaryto address individual and collective concerns about intercol-legiate athletics.

In November 1991, 10 charter member institutions with sim-ilar philosophies aligned to provide athletic competition forstudent-athletes from institutions with similar philosophies. Theconference was formed to collectively recognize the impor-tance of intercollegiate athletics in an educational settingand to increase institutional support without compromisingacademic integrity. These charter members voted unani-mously to name the new conference the Pennsylvania Ath-letic Conference (PAC), and on February 3, 1992, a pressconference was held at Philadelphia’s Veteran’s Stadium toofficially announce the formation of the Pennsylvania Ath-letic Conference (PAC), with competition to begin in the1992-1993 academic year. The first Constitution wasdrafted in June 1992 and in April 1993, the conference wasgranted Affiliate Membership in the NCAA.

In its inaugural year, the conference sponsored 12 champi-onships; today, the CSAC sponsors 17 championships in 15sports. The conference qualifies and maintains AutomaticQualifiers (AQs) in 13 sports, sending the conference cham-pion to NCAA Championships in Field Hockey, Men’s andWomen’s Soccer, Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’sBasketball, Baseball, Men’s Golf, Men’s and Women’sLacrosse, Softball and Men’s and Women’s Tennis.

Members of the CSAC wholly embrace the NCAA Division III“student first” philosophy by ensuring that institutions placethe overall educational experience and successful comple-tion of academic programs above all else. For this reason,student-athletes are treated no differently than any mem-ber of the student population. CSAC members embrace gen-der equity among student-athletes and are committed toproviding athletics programs that are equitable for bothgenders.

The CSAC is also wholly dedicated to service in the commu-nity, as the league has participated in such initiatives asHabitat for Humanity and the Eastern Polar Plunge, spon-sored by the PA Special Olympics. Each CSAC memberschool also participates in various service initiatives bothcampus-wide and in their communities.

Cedar Crest’s Lizzy Sunderhaus was named the nation’s female recipient of the2011 Jostens Trophy, which is regarded as the highest honor awarded in NCAAD-III basketball. The award is based on excellence on the court, in the classroom,and in the community.

Former Centenary ace Cole Kimball appeared in 11 games for the Washing-ton Nationals in 2011, posting an ERA of 1.93 in 14 innings pitched.

Gwynedd-Mercy’s Dan Dunkleberger is a four-time All-American in track. In2009, he placed seventh in the 400m at the NCAA D-III National Championships.He returned in 2010 and was second in the same event, while he captured thirdin the 200m. In the 2010 Indoor Championships, he took sixth in the 400m.

In 2010-11, both the Immaculata women’s basketball and field hockey teamswere recognized nationally for their team grade point averages. Women’s bas-ketball was 11th nationally (3.508), while field hockey tied for 10th (3.44).

Baseball legend Christy Matthewson, an original member of the Baseball Hallof Fame, and 1959 Masters champion and PGA Player of the Year Art Walleach attended Keystone.

Rose (Kuchawara) Jacklinski, a1999 Marywood graduate, is the all-time Divi-sion III record holder for consecutive stolen bases. Jacklinski swiped 68 consec-utive stolen bases without being caught from April 23, 1996 to April 16, 1998.

Neumann’s men’s ice hockey team won the 2009 NCAA Division-III NationalChampionship.

Notre Dame lacrosse player Kelsey Kempf was the NCAA Division-III statisticalchampion in Caused Turnovers in 2011, with 64 in 14 games, good for an av-erage of 4.57 per game.

Since going co-educational in 2009, Rosemont has added six men’s programsand two women’s programs. Forty-four percent of Rosemont student-athleteshave a cumulative Grade-Point Average higher than 3.0.
