WelcomeA New Season, with Deep Roots

Music connects us to our traditions, telling our collective story in a language that extends beyond narrative, lending texture and voice to our diverse histories. Through Fine Arts @ First Presbyterian Church’s commitment to fine music-making, we invite the community to connect with these traditions.

This season, we welcome world-renowned artists and local favorites to share the music that has shaped us—concertos from European masters, marching tunes from the Scottish highlands, improvisational gold from the jazz greats. And most fittingly, the season finale will feature repertoire from an East Texas delegation of choristers on their way to a summer of choral residencies at some of the most venerated cathe-drals in the United Kingdom. From sacred masterpieces to holiday favorites, there’s something for everyone this season. Join us in celebrating our musical roots.

BACH, BRAHMS & BEETHOVENSaturday, October 17, 2015, 7 pm | Sanctuary

The music of Bach, Brahms, and Beethoven have long captivated choral and orchestral audiences—the wonderment of Bach, the studied craftsmanship of Brahms, and the furious mythos of Beethoven all equally transport us.

This concert will feature the beloved Bach Cantata No. 140, Wachet auf, in addition to beautiful German folk songs of Brahms and rousing choruses by Beethoven. A chamber orchestra will accompany the choir in this impressive concert of German masterworks.* This concert is ticketed for general admission, and tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at tylercivicchorale.org; however, complimentary tickets are available for the members of First Presbyterian Church and their guests or family members. Members should contact the Music Office to reserve tickets.

That unique rhythmic language of jazz encapsulates something essen-tially human, at once championing the individual and bringing to bear the power of community. With special guests, sing-alongs, and cookies galore, the third annual Christmas Spectacular will be the most colorful, magical, heart-warming celebration of the season. The magic of the season will come alive during a program stacked with all of your holiday favorites, with KLTV news anchor Taylor Hemness performing as master of ceremonies. A Christmas cookie reception will follow the concert. NINE LESSONS & CAROLSSunday, December 20, 2015, 6 pm | Sanctuary

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at First Presbyterian Church. This celebration is an East Texas re-creation of a perennial favorite at King’s College, Cambridge, England, with roots that can be traced back to the Archbishop of Can-terbury in 1880. The ecumenical service has become a beloved tradi-tion in the Tyler community, drawing a crowd from across the region to celebrate the Christmas season with a solemn, candlelit festival.

Together with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, the music ministries of First Presbyterian Church and Christ Episcopal Church present a concise but powerful hour of chamber music under the baton of Donald W. Duncan. With compositions by Bach, Handel, and Haydn, repertoire will include the Water Music Suite, Brandenburg Concerto movements, and more.

For nearly 30 years, Boston Brass has set out to establish a one-of-a-kind musical experience. The ensemble’s signature sound and lively repartee, touched with humor and personality, attempts to bridge the ocean of classical formality to delight audiences in an evening of great music and boisterous fun. The first half of the program will feature the group’s most-loved virtuosic musical selections; but at intermission, the audience will be invited to cast a ballot to determine the second half of the program. A procession of tartan plaid and bagpipes celebrates First Presbyterian Church’s Scottish heritage and has become an annual tradition for the congregation. Join us as special guest musicians, the Lyon College Pipe Band, return to lead the celebration.

LYON COLLEGE PIPE BAND | With a second-place prize from the World Pipe Band Champion-ships in Glasgow, Scotland, under its belt, Lyon College’s Scottish Heritage Program truly is the most significant in the nation for bagpiping, drumming, and Highland dancing. The arts pro-gram is designed to teach, preserve, and celebrate the Scottish arts and traditions in America. Founded in 1872 by the Presbyterian Church, whose roots are in Scotland, Lyon College is the oldest private college in Arkansas, and happens to be the alma mater of FPC’s director of music, Donald W. Duncan.

This special concert is a preview of the repertoire that the Tudor Rose Ensemble will take with them on a pilgrimage to England and Scotland in July 2016 where they’ll sing residencies and a concert in three of the great cathedrals in the United Kingdom. Evensong comes from a long tradition of sung evening prayers meant to evoke praise, penitence, and prayer in the hearts of worshipers.

Since 2008, Voices of Faith has sought to give young musicians a space to explore their artistic discipline through a God-honoring repertoire. The choir gathers together over seventy-five talented vocalists from the East Texas area—in-cluding middle school, high school, and college students—in a Christ-centered, community choral program under the direction of Pam Eikner, with accompanist Dana Bertino. Students believe their talents are a gift from God, and they actively seek ministry opportunities.

First Presbyterian Church is home to the joint con-certs of the UT Tyler Patriot Singers and Concert Chorale, under the direction of Cameron Rose. The Patriot Singers, UT Tyler’s premiere choral ensemble, perform a wide repertoire, from sacred Renaissance music to contemporary vocal jazz. The Concert Chorale, which joins the Patriot Sing-ers in concert, is UT Tyler’s community choir.

SEATING & TICKETSSeats are offered on a first come, first served basis; all Sanctuary seating is in pews. The majori-ty of our concerts are free and open to the public. For ticketed concerts, purchase tickets at the door or in advance. Ticket pur-chase information is listed with concerts in this brochure, where applicable.

PARKINGFree parking is available in two parking lots at First Presbyterian Church, one on the south side of the Fellowship Hall, and another east of the main building. Des-ignated handicapped parking is available in the upper portion of the south parking lot near the Fellowship Hall. Please refrain from parking at the local busi-nesses surrounding the church.

CHILDRENOlder children are welcome at our concerts; however, if they become noisy or unsettled, please quietly exit the Sanctu-ary in order not to disturb other concertgoers. A nursery is not provided during concerts, with the exception of events taking place on Sunday morning.

More FPC MusicThe Music Ministries at First Presbyterian Church welcome musicians of all skill levels and backgrounds to join us in glorifying God. Learn about joining the ministry at fpctyler.com/music.

CHILDREN’S CHOIRSThe Carol Choir teaches basic music reading skills and singing technique, as well as tenets of Re-formed worship and music. Ring-and-Sing combines elements of singing and handbells. Both groups contribute to worship throughout the school year.

ADULT ENSEMBLESThe Chancel Choir leads worship with a musical variety ranging from the great anthems of the Reformation and choral masterworks to modern, hymn-based anthems and Gospel music. The Car-illon Handbell Choir chimes during worship often, utilizing a five-octave set of Malmark bells.

ORGANFPC Tyler’s sanctuary organ—the largest in all of East Texas—was built in 2000 by Casavant Frères. It features beautiful clear flutes, warm diapasons, and a variety of reed color and tone, as well as a gener-ous number of lush strings and celestes.
