Chinese Paintings, Calligraphy and Books

featuring the Private Collection of a Prominent Kuomintang Government Statesman

Michaan’s Auctions is pleased to have the opportunity to present a substantial selection of fine modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy works from the private collection of a prominent Kuomingtang Government Statesman. The International Statesman’s several years as Chiang Kai-shek’s personal envoy, as well as his noted work with top foreign administrations, placed him in the distinct position to meet and socialize with famous artists of his time, allowing his personal interest and love of the arts to flourish.

This distinguished and exquisite collection can be largely attributed to the unique life-long personal rela-tionships that the Statesman was able to develop with the artists. Many of the paintings served as gifts and tokens of their friendships throughout the years, commemorating anything from special life events to simple gestures of affection. Most noteworthy of these friendships were the ones that he had with Master Zhang Daqian (Chang Dai-Chien) and Master Huang Junbi, whose masterpieces comprise thirteen impressive lots being offered at auction.

The Statesman’s friendship with Master Zhang Daqian began in 1941 when Master Zhang was commissioned to work in the Dunhuang Buddhist caves, copying and restoring the ancient murals housed within. At this time, the Statesman was Mayor of a city located 1000 km away from the caves, and after hearing about the artist’s valuable work, he made the long journey to meet Master Zhang and deliver water to the artist’s camp in the middle of desert. In the years to follow, their friendship spanned many more miles as Master Zhang moved from China to Hong Kong, to Brazil, to Japan, to Pebble Beach, and then to Taipei, attesting to the pair’s life-long and lasting bond.

In 1949 or shortly thereafter, the Statesman’s friendship with Master Huang Jungbi began. Widely known as one of the art teachers of Madame Soong Mei-ling (Madame Chiang Kai-shek), Master Huang was very likely introduced to the Statesman through this famous connection. In later years, Master Huang became a nearby neighbor, solidifying their platonic relationship as he and the Statesman often visited each other after dinner. To this day, the Statesman’s family can still recall Master Huang’s love of good food and his warm, welcoming smile.

This exciting auction features twenty-five superb lots from the Statesman’s private painting collection, provid-ing buyers with an outstanding once in a lifetime opportunity to add excellent artworks and intriguing pieces of history to their collections.
