“Over the last 10 years, there’s been a shift in the

attitudes of architects. They have more respect for what

we do because we look at the whole project from the inside

out. We ask ourselves, does it flow? Can it be

furnished correctly?” Donna says.

One of Vallone Design’s projects, DMB’s Silverleaf Coun-

try Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, began with a golf club-

house design, and branched into several residential

interior design projects within the community.

Donna says the design directive for the clubhouse was

to create a rural Mediterranean feel. More than half of the

architectural materials were imported from Europe—roof

tiles, flooring, windows and doors.

Antiques were collected for three years, and many of

the furnishings are old pieces from Donna’s travels.

“The project owners let us ‘collect,’ which is why the

clubhouse turned out so wonderful,” Donna says. “We

incorporated a lot of traditional fabrics, and the walls are

Venetian hand-plastered. The Silverleaf Clubhouse also

has one of the most elaborate ladies’ locker rooms we’ve

ever designed. When people walk inside, they feel like

they’ve been transported to a European village in the

Tuscan countryside.”

Several of Silverleaf’s homeowners hired Vallone Design

to do their own personal residences. Many of these are

second, third or even fourth homes for the owners.

“They have very traditional homes in their home states,

so they ask us to create more of a fun vacation feel for their

residences here.”

Donna says a big trend right now is creating family-

oriented golf communities. Unlike traditional men’s-only

clubs, many men today want to have lunch with their wives

and kids. The Martis Camp Family Barn, another project

by DMB and Highlands Development Group in Truckee,

California, is one of Vallone Design’s projects that embraces

this trend by offering something for everyone in the family,

including plenty of places for kids to hang out.
