Water Based Intumescent Cable Coating for the fire protection of Electrical Cables up to 90 minutes
DESCRIPTION
FS11 is a water-based intumescent coating for interior applications specially developed to stop fire from spreading on single, grouped or bundled electrical cables.
FS11 Cable Coating protects electrical cables through insulation. Under fire, FS11 expands up to 1000% to form an insulation layer to protect the cable from heat and flame spread, effectively creating a sacrificial blanket around the cable.
FS11, upon expanding, also prevents fire from penetrating the electrical cable by leeching oxygen. Fire needs oxygen to survive, a lower-oxygen environment means the fire cannot spread as easily further increasing the durability and lifetime of the cable under fire.
FS11 is the PERFECT solution for protecting your interior cable system due to it’s incred-ibly low DFT (Dry Film Thickness) of 1mm.
WHERE TO USE FS11
FS11 can be applied to interior electrical cables in industrial, marine and commercial projects or where cable protection is required to avoid spread of flame. THE WINNING ADVANTAGE
- Recognized as the Lowest DFT on the market- Classified for up to 90 minute Fire Rating- Water based- Non-Toxic Non-Hazardous- Solvent and asbestos free- Lightweight, thin-film application.- Cost effective for the customer and installer- Applications worldwide - Single component (stir and spray).- Worldwide approvals- Interior applications only
WHY USE FS11?
FS11 is an ideal solution for the protection of electrical cables from flame spread in an interior application.
One of the main reason for coating cables is to isolate the fire to it’s source and not let the fire spread from one area to another along the cable system.
FS11 is perfected for interior applications where a cost effective solution to cable protection is required.
FS11 does not effect the current carrying capacity of the electrical cable, so there is no derating required.
FS11 will last the lifetime of the cable once applied.
FS11 is typically applied on the following:- New and existing electrical cables- HV and LV cables- Cable in need of repair
FS11 can also be applied to electrical cables in rooms and areas such as:
- Substations- Cable Galleries- Switch Rooms- Battery Rooms- Cable Basements- Transformer Bays / Areas- Motor Rooms- Marine applications (ships / rigs)

Water Based Ablative Cable Coating for the fire protection of electrical cables up to 90 minutes
DESCRIPTION
FS15 is THE revolutionary Ablative Cable Coating from FIRE SECURITY SYSTEMS.
FS15 is a water-based ablative coating for interior and exterior applications specially developed to stop fire from spreading on single, grouped or bundled electrical cables.
FS15 Cable Coating protects electrical cables through ablation as opposed to insu-lation. Energy is consumed or generated to change a material from one condition or state to another.
FS15, when exposed to fire, starts to ablate by chemical and physical reactions (for instance: evaporation, chemical cracking, melting). This ablation consumes large amounts of energy (heat) while keeping the cable cool (for a certain length of time, as the process is self sacrificial).
FS15 is the PERFECT solution for protecting your cable system due to it’s incredibly low DFT (Dry Film Thickness) of 1mm.
WHERE TO USE FS5
FS15 can be applied to interior and exterior electrical cables in industrial, marine and commercial projects or where cable protec-tion is required to avoid spread of flame.
THE WINNING ADVANTAGE
- Recognized as the Lowest DFT on the market- Classified for up to 90 minute Fire Rating- Water based- Non-Toxic Non-Hazardous- Solvent, halogen and asbestos free- Lightweight, thin-film application- Cost effective for the customer and installer- Applications worldwide - Single component (stir and spray)- Worldwide approvals
WHY USE FS15?
FS15 is the ideal solution for the protection of electrical cables from flame spread.
One of the main reason for coating cables is to isolate the fire to it’s source and not let the fire spread from one area to another along the cable system.
For exterior cable applications, FS15 also helps stop UV degradation of the cable sheath, and also with FS15, we can repair cracked sheaths extending the lifetime of the cable.
FS15 does not effect the current carrying capacity of the electrical cable, so there is no derating required.
FS15 will last the lifetime of the cable once applied.
FS15 is typically applied on the following (interior or exterior):- New and existing electrical cables- HV and LV cables- Cable in need of repair
FS11 can also be applied to electrical cables in rooms and areas such as:

Introduction This manual has been prepared to provide you with basic information for the application methods of Fire Security Systems FS11 and FS15 Cable Coating. Further, equipment recommendations and application suggestions are included to assist you and your project supervisor in proper preparation and execution of work. The objective of this manual is to explain the necessary components and methods to provide the required fire protection as specified by the owner or designer. It is your responsibility, as a competent and professional applicator, to apply the product in accordance with appropriate tests and in compliance with recommendations. It is important that you have full knowledge of our product(s) and its application methods in order to maintain our record of proven performance and consistent customer satisfaction. We urge your studied review of the information contained in this manual and the transmission of this same information to all personnel who will be involved in the application of Fire Security Systems’ Cable Coatings. As additional information is developed, it will be forwarded to you for as an addition. Should you desire additional copies, or should there be questions requiring clarification, please contact offices or your local representative. Why do cables have to be fire protected? Electrical cables themselves can be the cause of a fire (short-circuit, electrical overload, arcing). They allow the rapid spread of flame mainly in vertical cable shafts and can cause secondary fires. The rapid propagation of flame is the biggest risk in cable fires. Propagation rate is 20metres/ min (66ft/min) in vertical runs, that means 5 storeys/min. Insulating and jacketing of most cables used today consist of plastics; polyvinylchloride (PVC) contributes by the largest part, but plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and others are used to lesser extents. PVC contains chlorine which in fire is emitted as hydrogen chloride. This gas is carried by the air through the entire building structure reaching parts which are not affected by heat or flames. This hydrogen chloride condensates after combining with water vapour to produce hydrochloric acid, which is deposited on all surfaces and may cause severe corrosive damage to metal surfaces, for instance in electrical or electronic installations and cement or concrete structure.

Equipment Recommendations Pumps
1. Graco Airless spray units such as King, Bulldog or similar units under Wiwa brand and for smaller applications Graco Merkur.
Hoses
• BlueMax II hoses of dimensions 3/8” and ¼” is used to connect the Airless spray pump with the gun. The hoses are fitted with 1 pc gun filter housing and 1 pc swivel for improved manoeuvrability at the gun.
Spray Guns and Tips
• Application is carried out by the use of a Graco Silver Plus Gun with a two finger trigger which provides the best gun control while spraying. This gun is fitted with a RAC 5 switch tip 317/325. This tip is fitted with a tip guard Rack 5 Handtite tip guard.
*For application in difficult to reach areas we use Graco pole gun extensions to create different length pole guns. You should always have a range of tip sizes on hand at a job site since cable tray and single and grouped cable, hose length, vertical lift, and job site conditions all impact spray patterns.
6 | P a g e
Spare parts and Accessories To reduce additional job application start-up or down time expenses due to equipment failure, the following spare parts and accessories are recommended:
• Sufficient tools in the form of long handled screwdrivers, wrenches, hose clamps, etc. to allow for quick maintenance checks and repairs in the field.

• Movable scaffolding as required. • Barrel or drum handling equipment to facilitate moving of pails (if required). • Thickness measuring gauges to assure adequate wet and dry film thickness. • Extra brushes for touch up after spray completion. • Mechanical mixing of FS11 and FS15 is required to assure uniformity of blended ingredients and proper
material viscosity. For best results, use of an air operated motor or electric mixer is recommended.
8 | P a g e
Surface Preparation
• FS11 and FS15 are designed to be applied over suitably prepared and cleaned cable(s). • A thorough cleaning of cables is not required. However, oil and grease should be removed with dry rags • (No solvent!). • Using a broom or vacuum cleaner to remove heavy layers of dust is sufficient.
9 | P a g e
Airless Application Prior to spraying, FS11 and FS15 must be thoroughly mixed to a "smooth, creamy" consistency.
WARNING! AIRLESS EQUIPMENT SHOULD ONLY BE USED BY TRAINED AND EXPERIENCED PERSONNEL
Airless spraying Water Based
• A material temperature of +5oC is recommended for optimal spraying behavior • If needed thinning with max. 3% of water • Recommended operating pressure: 200 - 250 bar • Recommended tip sizes: 0.023" – 0.027" • Approx. 1.4 mm wet = 1.00 mm dry = approx. 1.8 kg/m2 • Tip extensions with swivel ends can be used to reach inaccessible areas.
Brushing
• Brushing with standard or long-bristled brushes for touch up only.
Drying Time
At 20oC object temperature and 65% relative humidity at least 24 hours between each coat.
o Dust dry: approx. 3 hours o Touch dry: approx. 6 hours o Full cure: approx. 24 hours
• Lower temperatures, higher relative humidity, insufficient air movement and different fire protection coating
thicknesses can prolong drying time.
10 | P a g e
Down Time and Clean Up When stopping work for a break, immerse the tip of the gun in water and cover the open drum to prevent the material from hardening. This will permit quick resumption of work without the need to clean the equipment. When stopping work overnight or longer, as well as when the job is completed, place the pump equipment in a container of water. Clean the pump of residual coating material using a brush or rag. Activate pump in order to cycle water, directing the material hose back into the can. When the pump and material hose are thoroughly clean cycle clean water through the pump to help prevent rusting. Disconnect the material line and remove the gun for hand cleaning.
11 | P a g e
Important Application Procedures Cold Weather Application: FS11 and FS15 cannot be applied, below 5oC. Also the following important points should be noted:
• FS11 and FS15 MUST be stored free from frost- preferably at a minimum of +5oC to a maximum of +30oC

Description
FS20 Firestop Compound is a specially formulated
gypsum based mortar, which is mixed with water to be
trowelled or poured around service penetrations.
Plastic pipework must be protected with either Fire
Security Firestop Collars or Intumescent Pipe Wraps
(see data sheets).
In floors, permanent formwork panel (50mm) is cut
and friction fitted between services and the edges of
the floor slab. FS20 Firestop Compound is then
trowelled over the formwork to a depth of 25mm thick.
This is allowed to harden. The FS20 Firestop
Compound is then mixed to a pouring grade and tops
the seal up to the required depth.
In walls, FS20 Firestop Compound is mixed into a stiff
consistency for trowelling into smaller openings. In
larger openings, FS20 Firestop Compound can be
cast into blocks which can be built into walls.
Coverage
These are approximate calculations based on 22kg
bags. The coverage does not take into account the
percentage of the hole filled with services.
Specification Install FS20 Firestop Compound to provide 1,2,3 or 4
hour fire rating to all service penetrations through all
fire rated walls and floors. Installation to be fully in
accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Cold Smoke and Air Tight Seal
FS21 Firestop Panel will provide a cold smoke seal
around services penetrating through compartment walls.
Description
FS21 Firestop Panel comprises of three Fire Security
System’s elements:
• FS21 Firestop Panel
(1200mm x 600mm x 50mm)
• FS23 Acoustic Intumescent Sealant
• FS11 Ablative Coating
FS21 Firestop Panel are manufactured by spraying high-
density rock fibreboard with a fire rated ablative coating.
The coated panels are simply cut and friction fitted
between the services and the edges of the structure.
Plastic pipework needs to be sealed with FS21 High
Expansion Intumescent Sealant or sleeved with Insulated
Fire Sleeves prior to installation of the coated panel
system.
The FS23 Intumescent Sealant is used as an adhesive on
the edges of the panel to form a barrier with surrounding
structure. All joints in the barrier are pointed in with FS23
Intumescent Sealant to form a monolithic layer. The FS15
Ablative Coating is largely used to make good any
damaged coating or for a more aesthetic finish. In
plasterboard partitions, the panel must be fitted to both
sides of the wall to fire protect the studs. The panels can
be fitted by either a pattress fix or by being cut into
openings. For large floor openings we would advise using
FS20 Firestop Mortar (see technical data sheet).
Fibre Migration
FS21 Firestop Panel will not allow fibre migration as all
exposed edges of mineral fibre are encapsulated with an
acrylic based polymer.
Colour
White matt finish. Can be over painted if desired.
Specification
Install FS21 Firestop Panel to provide up to 4 hours fire
rating to all service penetrations passing through all fire
rated walls. Installation to be fully inn accordance with

Description
FS23 HE Intumescent Sealant is an easy to apply water based acrylic emulsion sealant containing graphite which expands at
temperatures above 135ºC sealing around various penetrations and services to prevent the passage of smoke and flames. Application Procedure
All surfaces must be clean and sound, free from dirt, grease and other contamination. Wood, plaster and brick may be damp but
not running wet. Use mechanical abrasion to clean porous surfaces before application. For extra performance in movement
situations, a primer can be prepared by diluting 1 part sealant with 2 parts of water and mixing thoroughly. The primer should be
brush applied and allowed to dry for 2 to 3 hours before applying sealant. Alternatively a standard PVA sealer may be used on
the surface.
Prepare joint by cleaning and priming if necessary, as previously detailed. Cut nozzle to the desired angle and gun firmly into
the joint to give a good solid fill. Strike off the sealant flush with the joint sides within five minutes of application, before surface
skinning occurs. A small amount of shrinkage will occur on curing. If a flush finish is required, fill the joint slightly proud of the
surface to allow for shrinkage. Coverage
FS23 HE Intumescent Sealant (310ml cartridge) will yield 0.155 linear metre per cartridge at 25mm wide and 80mm depth.
Approximate coverage rates are shown in the table below.
Pipe / Conduit Size No of Cartridges

Limitations
• The sealant is not intended for application on bituminous substrates or substrates that can exude certain oils and
plasticizers or solvents.
• The sealant is not recommended for submerged joints or areas exposed to high abrasion.

Fire Rating
Description
FS23A Intumescent Sealant is a high specification,
one part water based acrylic sealant, extruded from a
cartridge loaded into a standard sealant gun. The
depth of the joint will depend on the gap to be filled
and the fire rating required (see fire rating).
All surfaces must be thoroughly clean and free of
bond breaking contaminants prior to application of the
sealant. No priming is required for most construction
substrates, however, it is recommended that a small
area be tested on substrates.
The sealant should not be applied if the ambient
temperature is below 5ºC as adhesion will be
impaired. The sealant is fast curing approximately 15
minute tack free time. When fully cured, the sealant is
overpaintable. Under fire conditions the sealant forms
a fire resistant ash.
