Greetings Dragons and wider HK football community!

How time flies! It is with great pleasure that I write to you all with plenty on at the Dragon's Den as Q3 comes to a close having exceeded all expectations and been a phenomenal success.

Of significant note on the 1st August we saw the Hong Kong Dragons host two international sides from the Jakarta Bintangs and Vietnam Swans at the HKFC for an inaugural HK 10's AFL round robin style tournament.  The footy was played in such great spirits and congratulations to boys who slugged it out in 35 degree heat for the duration of the day in a 4 game (albeit abbreviated) format. Great to see a Dragon's side victorious on their home patch, as it made for a memorable day with players and spectators alike left wanting more of the same, such was the fantastic standard of footy on display. Moreover, this potentially opens the door for future international AFL tournaments to be held right here on our door step, which is exciting to say the least!

August also saw the much anticipated the 2015 Annual Back Tie Ball, held at the Hong Kong Cricket Club, which was a fantastic and duly fitting way to celebrate what has been a momentous year at the Dragons. Many were expecting a 25th year anniversary hangover following the blazing success of 2014 (with 420 guests and the presence of Peter Daicos the "Macedonian Marvel"), however quite the contrary eventuated with the club continuing on the upwards trend! It truly was a glamorous affair and I must thank my hard-working committee. A huge thanks in particular to Chris Burke our social butterfly, whom had put in a mountain of work in the months leading into tonight and planned everything with such meticulous detail.

And so a line in the sand was drawn in Q3 in a football sense.....Importantly training has certainly stepped up a cog with the numbers and dedication of the playing group well noted (with 40 players signed up already for the upcoming Asian Championships is impressive). It must be said a special thanks to the Football department including, Captain - Dom Dunn with his VC - Tim Smith and DVC - Chris Burke leading the charge, along  with the tactical genius and inspirational guidance from Coach - Gary Wines and Assistant - Chris Barr. The ultimate goal being the Asian AFL Championships being held at the Harrow International School in Bangkok on 17th October. This year sees a two tier divisional format with Hong Kong in Division 1 to be placed against the likes of Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Jakarta & Vietnam. Every game will be extremely tough and it is a formidable draw, but I do believe the leadership group have the Dragon's fired up for a crack at the illustrious 2015 title. It is a clear example of the

growth of the club in terms of professionalism that I must thank all involved. Let's bring back the silverware Dragons!!!!!!!

Despite an action packed Q3, Q4 around the corner also presents a mouth watering selection of events and action at the Dragons. Please do get involved and bring along family and friends to the upcoming AFL Grand Final function (3rd October) at the HKFC, with Port Adelaide players (Jarmen Impey and Alipate Carlile) in attendance, as well as flexibly packaged/priced tickets for adults and children. Also a big thanks to Flight Centre who have provided an amazing raffle price of a trip for 2 to Phuket (flights, accommodation & transfers) at Paresa Resort for the day. Other priceless AFL memorabilia will be also auctioned off at half-time, so can't wait to see you all there.

November 25th also marks an important occasion for the HK Dragons with an exhibition game to be played placing a selected 2015 representative squad of 20 Dragons up against a visiting team from South Australia. Importantly this visiting team is a group of young indigenous AFL players, from the South Australian Aboriginal Sport Training Academy, who will be not also visiting Hong Kong but will also be heading to Guangzhou and Beijing. This 10 day trip represents an alignment of two of PAFC’s key community initiatives in Indigenous welfare and support, as well as development of football in China. The trip will be publicised in the media back in Australia with this game as one of the centerpieces, coupled with separate ceremonies with the Consul General of Australia in Hong Kong, and Ambassador of the Commonwealth of Australia to the People’s Republic of China, in Beijing. The match will be played from 4 to 6pm at the HKFC, and this will include an Auskick exhibition at halftime so bring along any family and friends to have a look at potential future AFL players of tomorrow and watch their skills light up Happy Valley!

Finally the last week of November will see the infamous Dragon's end of season function so keep an I out on the website, social media and around town as this is sure to be an event not to be missed to celebrate what has been another memorable year for AFL in HK, as well as award winners including the club best & fairest, best clubman, and best first year player.

Yours sincerely,

Mark MastoresCLUB PRESIDENT

Asian Champs – Where Legends are made!

The Asian Champs is now into its 15th year and continues to be a beacon for the development and expansion of AFL across Asia. The competition has now expanded into a two-tier format, with 13 teams participating, which will only serve to enhance the reputation and spectacle of the Asian Champs now and into the future. The new format means the strongest teams in the region play off in one division for the right to be called Champions of Asian Football. There will be absolutely no easy games in Division 1 and we will need to be at our absolute best if we are to take out the Holy Grail of Asian Footy. The new format will no doubt make things very challenging, but I feel being pitted again the best teams really plays to our strengths. The Dragons relish the challenge of big games and they don’t come much bigger than Singapore, Thailand, Jakarta and Vietnam back to back.

Before we look ahead to the Champs, I feel it’s also a good time to look back on what has been achieved thus far in 2015. It's been another huge year for the Dragons already with six rounds of SCAFL, the Manila 12's tournament, an epic tour of the USA and of course the recent Dragons Ball. I would like to say a big thanks to the committee who do a huge amount of tireless work behind these scenes to make it all possible. It’s the selfless work of these guys that make our amazing club what it is. So thank you and long may it

continue. I would also like to say a big thank you to the coaching staff and leadership team. Wino, Barrie, TBird and Burkey have put in a huge amount of work behind the scenes with training and preparations for this year’s Champs. I feel our diligent approach has us as well prepared as we ever have been. Training sessions have been well organised, which has created a great feeling around the team and has set us up perfectly for a big crack this weekend. Thanks for all you hard work and support boys, very much appreciated.

It’s also important to make mention of the most significant milestones in the club’s history. Dwight “Stuchy” Stuchbery becomes the first player in the Dragon’s 26 years to play 100 games. Stuch has conducted himself with absolute class through his career and building an impressive CV along the way; 3 x Asian Champs winner, multiple All Asian selections, Club Best & Fairest, Club Premiership Captain, 5 x Manila 12’s winner, player of the Grand Final and leading goal kicker in the Manila 12’s tournament. The little man has done it all and regularly done it in the big games when it’s needed most. It’s safe to say that everyone that has had the opportunity to play with Stuch over the last decade has enjoyed playing with you and wish you all the best on you achievement. Make you have another huge Champs & hopefully add one more premiership medallion to your collection.

I would like to welcome to the new Dragons who will be embarking on

their first Asian Champs in our famous guernsey: Sammy Agars, Chris Blumfield, Justin Bentley, Luke McCormak, Kevin Chan, Will Jeffries, Chewy and Nathan Pither (back after a 4 year layoff). Boys get excited! Asian Champs is the biggest weekend of footy for the year and there is no better feeling than lifting the trophy and being crowned Champions of Asia. It’s going to be a long grueling day but we have great depth in our squad and I’m backing you in to get the job done. I’m looking forward to going into battle with all of you, let’s get out there and make it a day to genuinely remember.

Go Dragons!!

DRAGONS OF OLD The FireBreather catches up with DRAGONS LEGEND Farmer to discuss a pivotal moments in the club illustrious history ITS OURS!  DRAGONS WIN FIRST ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

It's late 2002 and the third instalment of the Asian Championships has just taken place.  The Indonesia Bintangs are Asian Champions for the second time in three years.  The Dragons have just one grand final appearance to our names and no titles as yet.  Its time to lift our game.

A line in the sand was drawn at that point.  The Dragons Committee went on a recruiting drive - Riggsy recruited all his fit mates from Cathay and Dicko and Farmer recruited the loose cannons.  We also took on the bold plan to host the 2003 version with no ground yet available.

Being a well connected club, former player Conroy Chan was brought into the picture to help find a ground.  Conroy being a prominent mover and shaker in the local scene had the government contacts to by pass some red tape and get this important international sporting event to Hong Kong.  Tin Kwong Road cricket ground was made available to us.  Box ticked!

As the recruiting and training continued, a snag was hit.  SARS.  The event was therefore postponed from May to August.  No problem.  More training and Wan Chai sessions were bound to help the cause.

With a couple of weeks to go, the Dragons were confident of our chances.  The squad looked as good as ever and the hosting plans were looking good.  Fliers were handed out in Lan Kwai Fong, Austcham and the Australian Association promoted to their members and we even got the South China Morning Post to put a spread in the weekend paper.

When event day came around, a typhoon had just passed and it was clear it was going to be a wet one.  Will Hamilton therefore decided to

coach on the sidelines and let Dicko get on with playing which suited their respective ages.

Early games showed that there were two clear standout sides on the day.  The Indonesia Bintangs and the Dragons.  Unsurprisingly, both cruised into the final.

The rain had stopped at the start of the final.  The Dragons won the toss and kicked with the breeze.  However, it was the Bintangs who made all the running in the first half.  Led by a strong midfield and Bali boys Gunny and Hinchy off half back the Bintangs kicked the only three goals of the half.

The Dragons faced a massive task in the second half.  We had to kick into the breeze, and to make it even worse the rain started again.  However, we weren't going to lie down.  Some inspired coaching moves were made, most notably Hamish into the centre and Dicko to full forward.  The Dragons then came out blazing and kicked two early goals, one being a left foot gem under pressure from Riggsy.  Then it tightened up and the Bintangs still looked likely to hold on.  But the Dragons came again.  Hamish and captain vague Damo were driving the ball out of the centre and Dicko led out to take a strong contested grab and nail the goal.  2 points in it with 3 minutes to go.  The Bintangs then

went forward, but Gunny hit the post half way up.  Still a chance.  Then we went forward again and Feeney got to the hot spot and took a mark and goaled.  Now we had the lead and just had to hold on for a minute or so.  The game ended deep in the Bintangs forward line, but we managed the almost impossible and won the game.  One of the best Dragons wins of all time, especially with what was at stake.

Celebrations went on for a couple of days.  We made the press again the next day with a picture of Chris Yee that they confused for Matty Wu!  Will Hamilton and Farmer also got a slot on RTHK radio to discuss the win.

History will show we went back-to-back the following year in a more dominant performance (Singapore didn't score against us in the final) and standards have been maintained high ever since.

AUSKICK HONG KONG Tom Longbottom….

2015 was our busiest year to date with almost 500 children registered across 5 teams.  We congratulated The Sandy Bay Scorpions with their first year in the program who saw in excess of 100 children registered, not a bad effort!  2015 was a busy year programmed over 23 weeks.

A lot was on offer in particular one for the oldies, our quiz night featuring ex Hawthorn champion and Brownlow medalist John Platten.

Our program has evolved over the last few years where we now see our clubs taking on more of an organisational role rather than the main body of Auskick Hong Kong.  This has and will ensure that our Auskickers get more specialised attention as we progress in the future.

2016 will no doubt be bigger and better and we look forward to seeing everyone out on the track next April.

AFL ASIA Darren Whitfield talks about what is happening around AFL ASIA HQ.....

AFL ASIAN CHAMPS 2015With 13 countries confirmed for the AFL Asian Champs 2015, we're really looking forward to possibly the biggest and best Champs to date!

There are massive new additions to the day in Bangkok Oct17th in 2015. A survey of all clubs was done to formulate the best champs possible in the time frame and cost structure we have.

The most popular change was the move to two divisions. These means 7 teams including the powerful Hong Kong Dragons, Vietnam and Singapore will move into the fierce Division 1, while 6 teams including Laos, Cambodia, China will battle out for their own Div 2 Grandfinal for some success of their own! Hong Kong requested to enter two teams this year but there was insufficient time available in the 1 day format to accomodate any seconds teams.

The draw for all first and second division slots was held end of September at half time of the Freo vs Hawks final, streamed live around the world from Saigon on AFL Asia TV!

LOCAL PLAYER INITIATIVES AT CHAMPSOne further initiative is progressing AFL Asia's local development strategies. All Asian born players

(or passport holders) are eligible to play in the combined EAST ASIA V SOUTH EAST ASIA game before the Div1 grand final. There will be a Friday training session run by West Coast Eagles Premiership player Andrew Embley, who will then coach the teams on the Saturday!

This initiative is in line with the AFL's International Cup rules preparing for IC17, the 3 yearly "World Cup" last held in Melbourne. Discussions with the AFL yielded 24 Sherrin footballs and playing tops for this game.

The East Asian team will be made up from players from China, Hong Kong and the Phillipines, and hopefully Japan. We thank Port Adelaide Football Club and ex SCAFL President Jon Hopper for their fundraising support getting an unprecedented 11 Guangzhou Chinese players to the Asian Champs this year!

PRESIDENTS MEETINGAFL ASIA’s President’s meeting will be held on Friday before Champs will discuss the direction we take footy forward in Asia, including Champs format, local player development, funding, membership, the AFL Asia ladder and no doubt a lot more. There will also be a short presentation from Brian Clarke, CEO of Australian Football International to give some perspectives on efforts to grow the game globally.

AFL GRAND FINAL PARTIESThe AFL Grand Final Lunch in HKFC was a great success and the day was celebrated by all AFL ASIA clubs Around Asia. The posters and details for each club were uploaded  onto our website  to give the one stop shop for Official AFL ASIA GF Parties in Asia.

MEDIAThe power of us all working together on social media to get the word out about "How good’s footy in Asia" is paying off. Thanks to all clubs and individuals who shared our “Bangkok Asian Champs Schedule Released” post. With 18 shares the Facebook post reached over 5,800 people with over 600 unique clicks on the webpage. We expect bigger coverage for the champs details!

FLIGHT CENTRE Callum Brown, General Manager of Flight Centre Greater China, talks about Travel, Sport and the importance of community involvement. This article has been produced exclusively for The FireBreather.

Sports and travel; travel and sports; any way you look at it they go hand in hand. Whether you love to travel or you love sports, there is no denying they go together. I was introduced to competitive sport from a young age. My Father being from Scotland was desperate for me to play Rugby however I was lost to the love of AFL in the winter and Athletics in the summer. It was very soon I realized and understood that local clubs like these could not exist without the constant support of volunteers and local businesses. This is why we at Flight Centre in Hong Kong are passionate about supporting various organizations and clubs within the Ex-pat community right here in Hong Kong and are very proud to be associated with the likes of the Dragons, Auskick and the Australian Association who all do amazing work here in Hong Kong.

As a teenager it was sport (Athletics specifically) that provided me the opportunity to gain a passion for travel. Travelling around Victoria every weekend turned quickly into competing around Australia which soon became as much about the destination itself. This love of travel went to another level as at the age of 21, I took off around the world and travelled for the next 3.5 years travelling to over 50 countries which eventually led me to working at Flight Centre on my return.Like travelling and playing sport, Flight Centre is a constant adventure who continue to grow at a rapid pace, now in 12 countries, more than 2,700 businesses and over 19,000 employees Flight Centre is a true power house of the Global travel industry. As you can imagine a company this size constantly presents personal and professional opportunities for our people and this is certainly the case right here in Hong Kong with the recent shop openings of Lyndhurst Terrace (April 1st 2015) and Discovery Bay (September 14th 2015). These two locations add to our existing locations of Happy Valley, Wanchai and North Point.Flight Centre Brand was born in Hong Kong in October 2009 and has grown to 15 businesses and over 110 team members.

The love of Sport has helped me learn Geography through watching various sports on television as a kid and more recently in my adult years sport has taken me to amazing destinations like Seville, Spain & Beijing, China to watch the

World Athletic Champs, Across New Zealand for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, Wimbledon, Following the Ashes tour of England and coming up in Feb 2016 the Super Bowl in San Francisco. The great thing is Flight Centre here in Hong Kong specialize in all these spectator sports and much more like the US Masters Golf, Tour De France and upcoming Rio Summer and Korea Winter Olympic Games is just to name a few.The great thing about all of our Spectator sporting packages is that we combine the event with participation, activities and sights.

At Flight Centre we also specialize in Business Travel and Luxury Travel so as you can see we are not just the airfare experts, we are the One Stop Travel Shop!

SATURDAY 28TH NOVEMBER

SOCIAL Committee member and Deputy Vice Captain, Chris Burke, talks about the social calendar for the remainder of 2015…..

\

Well the third quarter of 2015 has yet again seen the bar risen to new heights on the social front, which will have the 2016 social committee pulling out every trick in the bag to continue the upward trend – so plenty to look forward to moving onwards!

On Saturday, 15th August we witnessed a spectacular dragons milestone when the inaugural Dragons Annual Ball stole the show as the pinnacle of social events for 2015. As preparations were under way for the event, you couldn’t help but feel a tingle rush up the spine as names such as Lachy “the Animal” Evans,  Sammy “the difference” Agars and “All night Dwight” Stuchbery were scribed to the guest list … Along with a separate committee meeting scheduled for the sole purpose to negotiate Angus “the beef” Perry’s seating allocation and the strategic placement of this away from ceiling fans, the foundations were set for what was to be an entertaining evening.

As guests arrived to the glamorous Hong Kong Cricket Club, there was an instant ambience of class radiated by the attire of patrons partaking in the nights formalities, ensembles that were well complimented by the traditional dark wooden interior of the sophisticated establishment. Once again the lustrous red carpet and custom made Dragons backdrop provided a fitting stage for guests to showcase their glitz and glamour while they had their moment captured by our professional photographer for the evening. Special mention to the glitziest of them all, who true to form stole the spotlight with a fashionably late entrance, sporting the iconic beige suite jacket topped with freshly bleached hair. He was so late that Tim “T-Bird” Smith  had prematurely written him off and on their arrival was caught out licking his lips after devouring their allocated entrees. David “DeVine” Varley writing his tardiness off to the taxi industry’s shortcomings, was soon interrupted by fellow Cricket Club member Liam “Ginno” Ginnivan who claimed he saw him only an hour earlier in the steam room fast asleep with cucumbers over the eyes nursing the latest copy of women’s weekly. It was safe to say the evening was off to an exciting start.Once the night was opened with the wise words of Mark “The Prez” Mastores, we were instantly enlightened with a personal recollection of the momentous “Dragons US tour” by the Oxford Dictionary himself, public speaking no challenge when it comes to the intellectual prowess of the great Josh “Hammerlishess” Mahony. As mains

were served and drinks consumed, it was time to close on the remaining formalities with the induction of a few key members to the dragons family. It would be Lachlan Tape, Marley Cook, Charlie Varley, Reeve Stuchbery, Bruce Knight and Hunter “feathers” Mastores that would later hear of their fathers arduous battle to consume apple puree and throw back a beer from a babies bottle to successfully earn their sons stripes as new members of the dragons family. As the fathers were wiping clean their chins with their respective baby bibs (curiosity of Justin “the players player” Bentley’s hard work), the attention of guests was  immediately drawn to the stage with an incoming skype call and unexpected live dial-in from the clubs number 1 man and legend of a skipper, Mr Dom “Bowski” Dunn. Away from Hong Kong at the due to responsibilities pertaining to his part time modelling work with Nivea Shampoo and Conditioner, the skipper provided 7 minutes of greatness direct from his makeup room in Bali and reminded us all why he is the number 1 man for the job.The remainder of the night was a huge success as we handed over to the hottest band in Hong Kong. Once again we thank the talented Justin “Bieber” Barbaro, Stoooch, Ryan “The Law” Lawson and Gunny for another show stopping performance which saw the Marlands and Stuchberys of the D-floor pulling out top shelf moves in anticipation to be taken home by the lead singer and lead guitarist (respectively) for a dirty one night stand.  In summary the night was a huge success and plenty for the club to be proud of and look forward to as the Annual event sees its second rendition in 2016.A very special thanks much be given to Maz, Winsey, Tbird, Bence, Hammer, Bowski, Jimbob, Ox, the Benchwarmers and the rest of the committee for all your efforts in bringing the night together. The next major function is always a hit every year and we look forward to the “Dragons End of Season Christmas Party” on Saturday 28th November 2015.
