FARGO-Aboutthreetimesaweek,sometimesbeforethesunevenrises,99-year-oldBeaIhlenfeldgetsoutofbedandputsonherswimsuit.Shemakesherway slowly down the hallway to the pool areaoftheretirementcommunityshecallshome.By6:45,whenmanyofusarejustgettingthatfirstcupofcoffee,she’salready swimming laps – a morning ritual
thatfirsttookrootwhenWoodrowWilsonwasPresident.
“Irememberasaverylittlegirl,mydad,whowasarealexerciseguru,wouldmakemybrothersandIjumpincoldwaterfirstthingeverymorning.Hethoughtitwouldbegoodforourhealth,”shesays.Whetheritwasornot,somethingclickedwithBea.Forthenext90years,Beawoulddevoteherlifetowellness–beinghealthy,fit,andinvolved–andencouragingandmentoringotherstodothesame.Herupbeatattitudeandself-motivationisaninspirationtoeveryoneshe meets.
Beahasalwaysseenherselfasatomboy.ShegrewupinSouthernIllinois,themiddlechildandonlydaughterofaLutheranministerfathershecalled“mypal.”“Dadwasagoodguy.Hegaveusalotoffreedom.Heencouragedmeineverywayhecould,”shesays.
Shesayshermothermighthavebeenalittlemorefrustrated.“Mothercouldnevertamemetoworkinthekitchen,”shesays.Instead,youngBeawasoutsideplayinganysportshecould.ShelovedswimminginthenearbyWabashRiverorintheRockRiverinDixon,Ill.,whereahandsomeyounglifeguardnamedRonaldReaganwasattractingattention.“Allthegirlsfellforhim.Sothebeachwasalwayscrowded!”shelaughs.
Whenshewasn’tswimming,shewasplayingtennis,evenvolunteeringtobecomethecaretakeroftheclaycourtsintowninexchangeforplayingtime.Anditpaidoff.BythetimesheenrolledatCarthageCollegeinKenosha,Wis.,shewasaneliteplayer,becomingtheschool’sfirstfemaleletterwinnerafterwinningthestatechampionshipthreeyearsinarow.
It was while at Carthage that she would meet the man she would marry. It happened right away.“Myfatherhadjustdroppedmeoff,whenInoticedsomestudentsplayingapickupgameofsoftball.IaskedthecatcherifIcouldplayandhesentmeovertoplaysecondbase.Well,almostrightawayIcaughtaballandthrewthegalout.Thatcaughthisattention!Thatcatcherwastheguy,”shesays.“Theguy”wasFredIhlenfeld,whowastrainingtobeaministerjustlikeBea’sfather.
Aftermarrying,theIhlenfeldslivedinWinona,Minn.,thenmovedtoFargoin1942whenFredwascalledtoserveatSt.Mark’sLutheranChurchinnorthFargo.Thecouplehadtwodaughters,Bea and Kathy.

High.Shealsocoachedtennisinthesummertime.Bothjobssheadored.Shesaysshealwaysfeltluckythatshewasabletodowhatsheloved–teachingstudentstobeactivejustlikeshe’dalwaysbeen.
“There’snothingmoresatisfyingthanwhenyouworkhardatandbecomebetteratsomething,”shesays.“Ialwaystoldmystudentsit’sOKifyoudon’texcelatthis.Justtrytogetbetter.Iwantedthemtogetinterestedinsomethingandfollowthrough.”
Herdevotiontoherjob,alongwithgoodfriendsandfamily,helpedhergetthroughthelossofherhusbandafterjust13yearsofmarriage.Freddiedattheageof42fromanenlargedheart,theresultofachildhoodboutwithrheumaticfever.Beaknewwhentheyweredatingthatitmightleadtohisearlydeath,butthatdidn’tswayherfrommarryinghim.“Welovewhowelove,”shesaid.
AfterFred’sdeath,Beacontinuedworkingandraisingherdaughters.HercareerpatheventuallyledhertoajobasaschoolcounseloratCentralHighandlateranadministratoratNorthHighinFargo.By1973,Beadecidedtoretire.Shenevermarriedagain,butsaysshehadsomewonderfulmalefriendswhowouldtakeherhunting,somethingshehadlovedtodowithFredandthegirlswhentheywerelittle.Shesayswithpridethatsheshotherlastpheasantattheage of 80.
“Ijustlovetheoutdoors!Ialwayshave,”shesays.Andthentherewasswimming.Thatwasn’tgoinganywhere.SheswamattheYMCApooltwoorthreetimesaweekwellintoher80sand90s.ShemovedabouttwoyearsagotoTouchmarkatHarwoodGroves,aretirementcommunityinSouthFargo.Shestartedusingthepoolrightaway,andTouchmarkHealthandFitnessDirectorMarkMinettenoticedhowremarkableshewas.
Evenattheageof99theperpetualteachercan’thelpbuttakestudentsunderherwing.“Therewasawomanwhowasabout80whohadneverlearnedhow to swim, so Bea got in the water with her and showed her what to do. She’sjustwonderful–someonetolookupto,”saysEllenTillmanahealthandfitnesscenteremployee.
WhileBeaenjoyshelpingpeopleshesaysit’salsoaboutjustbeingaroundthem.Shesaysthatisthekeytostayingyoung.“There’snoexcusetositaroundandfeelsorryforyourself.Allyouhavetodoislookaroundatthepeoplewhohaveittougherthanyou.Youcan’tholeup.Youhavetogetoutthereandmeetyourfellowcitizens.Don’twaitforotherstocometoyou.Getinvolved!”
Andshe’slivingherownadvice.InadditiontoparticipatinginactivitiesatTouchmark,shestillmeetsonceaweekforahamburgerandfriesattheHiHorestaurantwithherfriendof73years,LoisMayerofFargo.“She’sjustsuchawonderfulperson!We’vesharedsomanythings,sadandhappy.She’saloyalfriend,”saysMayer.
Beaturned100inNovember.Thesedays,asshelooksatyouwithherbrightblueeyesandevenbrightersmile,she’llofferadvicesuchas:“enjoylife,”“getaneducation”andeven“getaswimsuitandgettothepool!”Buttruetothecoachsheoncewas,andobviouslydeepdownstillis,shecan’thelpbutturnintoamotivator.
“Don’tletanyonetellyouyoucan’tdosomethingasyougetolder.Youcandoit!Ido.”

FargoPublicSchoolsDevelopmentFoundationisexcitedtoannounceitsnewpartnershipwithTrollwoodPerformingArtsSchool(TPAS).
TheFoundationisa501(c)3non-profitorganizationthatwillactasthefiscalsponsorsupportingtheeducationalactivitiesofTPAS.TPASExecutiveDirector,KathyAnderson,willleadthefundraisingeffortsforTrollwoodandwillworkcloselywiththeFoundationtoadministerallfundsraised.OfficialtaxreceiptsfordonationsmadetoTPASwillbeprocessedthroughtheFoundation.
TheFoundation’smissionistoprovidestudents,teachers,andstaffwithenrichedandenhancedlearningexperiences.TheFoundationissupportedwithtax-deductibleannualandendowmentgiftsfromalumni,businesses,serviceclubs,churches,parents,currentandformerschooldistrictstaffandthecommunity—makingthemagreatmatchwithTPAS.
TheFargoPublicSchoolsDevelopmentFoundationispleasedtosupportTPASasaprogramofFargoPublicSchools.WelookforwardtobeingpartoftheteamtobroadentheoutstandingTrollwoodPerformingArtsSchoolopportunitiesthatbenefitareayouth.
TheFoundationadministersfundsforFargoSchoolsteachergrants,scholarshipsforseniors,StudentCriticalNeeds(clothing,schoolsupplies,milkprogram),andspecialschoolprojectssuchasplaygroundequipment,emergencyfundraisingevents,andserviceprojects.Theyalsowritegrants,buildendowmentsforschooldistrictprojects,administertheAdopt-A-Schoolpartnershipprogram,andoverseetheFargoPublicSchoolsAlumniNetwork.

Teacherscontinuetorequestthemid-morningmilksnackbecauseithelpsstudentsstayfocused.Asaresult,themid-morningmilkbreakbecameoptionalandfamiliesmustpurchasemilkiftheywishfortheirchildtoparticipate.Manyfamiliescannotaffordtopayforthisprogram.
Thisyear,milkwillcost35centspercartonorabout$30persemester,or$60peryearforeachchild.WehavesetourGOTNOMILKgoalat$69,000,whichwouldprovidemilktoover1,150studentswhowouldnotbeabletoparticipatethisschoolyearwithout your help.
