Children’s Ministry

Boys vs. Girls Missions Challenge - April is “Stock the Kitchen Month” at RIFA. The Children’s Ministry is collecting canned tuna, canned chicken and peanut butter for RIFA during the month of April. There will be tubs placed in the Children’s Ministry hallway, labeled “boys” and “girls.” The group to collect the most will receive a special breakfast on Sunday, May 4.

Fun Fridays Playgroup for moms and preschoolers, May 2 and June 6! This new playgroup led by Julie Bratcher will meet at different homes the first Friday of the month. Meet other moms and enjoy a little time together. Sign up at jacksonfumc.org or contact Julie Bratcher at Julie_bratcher@yahoo.com

Reelfoot Rural MinistriesJune 15-20This is our combined middle school/high school summer mission trip. Jackson FUMC youth have had a long-standing relationship with Reelfoot, and we’re going to rekindle that relationship this summer! This is going to be a life-changing week of hard work and real friendships. The spiritual journey from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday is over. The promise of eternal life is forever. In the days ahead, may we each be filled with hope and joy as we continue our journey seeking God, knowing Christ and sharing His love.

Many thanks to all who gave of their time and resources in preparation for meals, for setting up for each of the nine Holy Week worship services, for sharing musical talents through the Sanctuary choir, the First Awakening team, bands, handbells, orchestra, instrumentalists, the drama presentation, the tech team and office and nursery support, the powerful messages of worship and all the prayers for this blessed Lenten season.

ZhengZhou, China is a three hour train ride from Beijing and a city of 9 million. Why in the world would I be there? I was traveling with “Operation Smile”. They

provide free surgeries to repair cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities for children around the globe.

Through these experiences I have learned to cherish the ways I see Jesus. It also serves as a beautiful reminder that actions are so important. The way we act and the things that we say have the potential to give another person a glimpse of Jesus; a glimpse of something that transcends our world. It reminds us all to be a light and shine wherever we are today.

Our Haiti mission team is leaving April 26 and we all covet your prayers. A Habitat House is being built and there are many other opportunities at FUMC to serve. Go ahead my friends... just do it!

and stand on the mountain and wait for the Lord to pass. A raging wind came, followed by an earthquake and a fire. However, Elijah was not able to see God in those instances. The Bible continues to say that after all of that, there came a still small voice. It was in that still small voice that Elijah was able to hear and see God.

I was able to see God in the doctors and nurses performing surgery on a beloved child while the parents waited anxiously. I was able to see God in the people who prepared our simple meals. I was able to see God in the beggars in the street waiting for a simple acknowledging smile.

If you were in First Awakening Service Easter Sunday, you had the opportunity to pray for the mission team that is leaving for Haiti, April 26. What a blessing it was for those of us going to be prayed over. We are all getting excited and can't wait to see what the Lord is going to do during our week of service there. Having never been on a foreign mission trip, I am not sure what to expect, but I am trusting in Him to prepare our way. We all can not thank you enough for your prayers, encouragement, and goodie bags for our trip. It means so much to us all! I can't wait to experience just a taste of what our daughter, Sarah, did last year on the World Race… we will be so thankful for her guidance. While we are gone… DON'T FORGET to sign up for Habitat. The table is right by the library. You won't want to miss serving with us here in Jackson.

Heartfelt Thanks to UMCOR and FUMC

by Janet Furness I am part of a team of thirteen people going to South Africa, May 6-20, under Lifetime Hospice Association out of Rochester, NY (where I lived for twelve years). On this annual trip (the 11th year - my first), the team will assist the Zululand Hospice Association, which serves HIV/AIDS patients and their families. We will also serve orphans and the workers at MusaweNkosi, an orphanage in Empangeni. Zululand and Emangeni are municipalities in the northeastern and largely rural province of Kwalzulu-Natal. The goal is to provide resources that are very difficult to access there. We will take vitamins, nutritional supplements, children's toys, games, clothes, and school supplies to families where a parent is suffering HIV/AIDS. Lifetime Hospice helps parents live longer and provides medical care and other supports for their children born with HIV/AIDS. At the orphanage, children whose parents have passed away live in cottages in a

family type environment until they grow up. This year, our team includes men from UMCOR who will be building a centralized kitchen at MusaweNkosi. No longer will each cottage include a kitchen area. Since the need is so great in the province, those kitchen spaces need to be turned into more bedrooms for orphaned children. The waiting list is very long. Thank you for giving your valuable time and skills to serve these families.

The children and families Janet will meet in South Africa have received support from Genesis, Upper Room, and Religion for Life Sunday School classes, the Little Dresses sewing groups from FUMC and the Andrews Chapel Campus, the Sanctuary Choir, and Lydia Circle.

Your Dollars At Work

FUMC Faithful Folders

Thanks to the Faithful Folders for getting the newsletters ready to mail.

Have you ever wondered how your newsletter gets to your home? Before it is mailed through the U.S.Post Office, these “Faithful Folders” gather around the conference room table and cheerfully begin folding, sharing conversation between tasks, adding seals to the sides (required by the Post Office), placing on each a mailing label, sorting newsletters by zip codes and then counting them. The postage is then tabulated according to a specified formula. All of this has to be completed timely before they are then taken by staff to the Post Office before 3 p.m. for bulk mail processing.
