If your family is like mine, you’ve already planned out when and where you’ll be observing both Thanksgiving and Christmas with the in- laws. Now, we just need to decide who’s bringing what for each dinner, what we should get for the family members whose names we drew for our gift exchange, and how we’re going to split time between the various families without offend- ing anyone. Then we have to think and plan about how our workplaces, our churches, our kids’ schools, etc. are going to celebrate the upcoming holidays. There are lots of things to buy, people to please, and events to attend in the last two months of the year. It’s no surprise that in such a chaotic environment of ob- serving the holidays of Christmas and Thanksgiving that we often forget to actually GIVE THANKS. Sure, you’ve heard this message before, so maybe this is where you tune out. After all, you have far too many things to do to think once again about the basic giving of thanks. But seriously, think about your normal observation of the holiday season. Do you really take time to stop and earnestly give thanks? And I don’t mean sitting at the table and thinking of one thing for which you’re thank- ful because your mother-in-law asked everyone to share before anyone could eat. The turkey smells too good to give a heartfelt response, so you just say you’re thankful to be part of such a wonderful extended family. Boom! You just got one step closer to diving into the stuffing, and you complimented your in-laws! But . . . did you really give thanks? I have a suggestion to help you give thanks this year. Make a list of the top 10 (or 20 or more!) blessings in your life in 2019 so far. As you make the list, give thanks to God in prayer and worship, for he alone is the source of all good gifts. Thanksgiving—It’s Good for Your Health . . . At the risk of repeating my-

self . . . When you begin to see the red and green colors along with the various conifers, wreaths, and garlands decorating the shop-ping malls, you know Halloween cannot be far behind. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves though, let’s celebrate the holiday in between for a bit.

Of course, as has been noted countless times, giving thanks should not be relegated to only one day or even one month each year; it’s a habit that we do well to keep in place throughout the year. It helps us focus on the positive rather than dwelling on the negative. Sure, we could all point to people with circumstances that we im-agine are preferable to our own but, we must admit, it is likely much easier to find those with more challenges than those we face. The apostle Paul listed hardships of his own, any one of which by itself could be seen as overwhelming, yet he could still write these words:

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. —I Thessalonians 5:16-18

Though there is not a medical doctor’s degree hanging on my wall, let me write you a prescription. Adopt an attitude of gratitude for the next month by identifying as many of the things, people, ex-periences, and circumstances for which you are thankful as you can. Speak them aloud; consider writing them down. Make it a daily hab-it, doing it more than once a day if you wish. I believe you are likely to find yourself feeling better with each passing day. Chances are you’ll find yourself addicted to this prescription and, as with any ad-diction, you’ll need more and more of it to experience the same ef-fect. Fortunately, the Bible promises it’s good medicine!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

It has been a great semester so far! We are so thankful for incredible adult small group leaders that have continued to plug in and minister to our students. We are mov-ing to a new teaching series in the month of November called “Weird” on Wednesday nights. God wants us to live like Jesus. But the more like Jesus we become, the weirder we will look to the outside world. If we really want to give our lives glorifying God, then people might start to think we're a little weird. The choices we make, the val-ues we have, the way we spend our time and money, even the way we think and talk will be different from everyone else. We aren't supposed to be like the world. We are called to be differ-ent-set apart, holy. We will be looking into what it means to be different and live how God has called us. As we do so, please be in prayer for our students and adult leaders.

We are moving into one of my fa-vorite times of the year in regarding Contemporary Worship. Often times, I think I rush into preparation for the Christmas season. In some ways, it is understandable. Our culture pushes that by decorating for Christmas earlier,

and earlier. Stores put up their Christmas trees in earlier No-vember. The music shows up wherever we shop. And it makes sense! There isn’t much that is better than celebrating the com-ing of Christ at Christmas. I think I find myself listening to the narrative that says Christmas is only about gifts, family meals, and parties. That push to celebrate the Christmas season earlier and earlier can shape how we prepare for the season. Some-times, I’m afraid that rushing to Christmas causes us to miss some of the great things God is doing each and every week. We have the great joy of seeing the miracle of His provision and His presence every day. In this season of waiting for Christmas, may we do so with open eyes and open hearts. May we eagerly await celebrating Christmas, but may we rest in the waiting sea-son.

Grace and Peace,

Joel

From the Children’s Director

It’s hard to believe the year’s almost gone! We only have 11 ½ more days of CDO this year! Crazy! We have had such a fun year so far! Thank you, parents, for helping make our Fall Trick or Treating and parties such fun for our kids! I hope that you enjoyed it! This month we have more fun stuff happening: On November 19th, we will celebrate our color of the month! Brown! It is such a nice fall color!! Help us that day by wearing brown all day!

Cookies with Grandparents will be on Novem-ber the 12th at 2:30pm! We will have cookies, lemon-ade and a fun time for grandparents to be with the kids! Hope you will join us!

But wait! There is more fun to be had in November!! We will also host our annual Thanksgiving feast on November 21st at 11am. Parents or grandparents are invited to come and have lunch with the kids. CDO kids eat free! For any additional family members the cost of the meal is $5.00. Be looking for your payment envelope to let us know if you are coming. This is the month we show we are thankful most frequently, I just want to say the teachers here at CDO are so valuable to our program; without them…. well I don’t want to think what that would be like! I’m so grateful for the time and energy they put into their job, and the way they love the kids here at CDO. Remember—we don’t have CDO the 26th and the 28th!! I hope November is a wonderful month for you and your family! Find things to be thankful for and help your preschooler find those things also.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Mark Your Calendar!

Next Parents Night Out Saturday, November 9th, 5pm to 9pm

Ages: 6 Months to 5th Grade Cost: $10 First Child

$5 Each Additional Sibling

Includes childcare, snack and activities.

Bring your child’s dinner! Reservations are due in the office no later than 4pm on Wednesday, November 6th.

Welcome to November! Thank you, everyone, for helping make our Fall Festival possible! Also, I want to say thank you to all the teachers and workers that serve in our children’s ministry! Our Sunday School teachers, Wed PM teachers, and preschool volunteers give up “adult time” to be with the kids and share the word of God with them each week! These people are helping to shape the next generation of church leaders. The work they do is invaluable! Thank you, guys! I can’t say that enough! If you see the following people, please let them know how thankful you are for them as they serve our kids:

David and Paula Quisenberry, Julie Swift, Jessica Prater, Barbara Taylor, Katrini Powell, Steve and Donnella Carber-ry, Andrew and Christen Rogers, Carolyn Neff, Kari Killion, Erin Jenkins, and Kelly Prater

This month’s Parent’s Night Out is on Saturday the 9th. Let us know your child is coming by Wednesday the 6th at 4pm by calling the church office to give us your count! Remember to bring your child dinner! If you would like to help with PNO, let Julie or me know! Don’t forget that Thanksgiving week (November 27) we will not have our regularly scheduled Wednesday evening activities! Enjoy the time with your family! The Children’s Ministry will be sponsoring a family outing to Six Flags Holiday in the Park on December 15th! The ticket cost will be $20 per person! Due to purchasing tickets I need to know you are planning to go BY the 1st of De-cember! Note this is a family event. We want the whole family to come! You must accompany your kids. We are not providing sponsors. IF you would like to ride on the church bus, we need to know asap. We have a limited number of seats! We are opening this up to community, so feel free to invite friends! Park hours for the day are 2-10pm. You may go on your own and stay as long as you like! Tickets will need to be picked up before you head to the park! I will be happy to answer any questions you may have!

“And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” —Ephesians 5:20

Parents, take advantage of this month to talk with your kids about being thankful for the gift God gave us in Jesus! This will open doors to talk to your kids about salvation! A fun Thanksgiving project for

younger kids would be to make an “I’m thankful turkey.” Draw a turkey with the child’s hand, have them add “feathers”, and write what the child is thankful for on each feather! It will be a reminder to be thankful for the whole month! For older kids you might con-

sider volunteering in a soup kitchen around Thanksgiving! It can be such a rewarding experience for kids, as well as the people they meet! You might also ask your kids to write down something they are thankful for each day of November and then read all of them on Thanksgiving Day! Just some ideas! Ms. Amy

For several years the FBC family and friends have participat-ed in the Operation Christmas Child gift-filled shoebox drive, which benefits needy children throughout the world. Not only do they receive the many small gifts that fill those shoeboxes, they receive the love of Christ through the gifts you so carefully have packed and most importantly His story is shared with each one when the boxes are delivered. You still have time to be a part of this missional project. The deadline to turn in your gift-filled shoebox is Friday, November 15th. After that it will be up to the donor to deliver the shoebox(es) to a collection site. Don’t have time to fill a shoebox? Consider contributing money to be used toward purchasing items for a shoebox OR

funds to go towards the shipping and han-dling costs. The suggested amount for the postage cost for each box is $9. Be sure to mark your contribution envelope and/or check as to how you want the money to be used . . . for shoebox gifts or shoebox post-

age.
