David writes these words as he continued in his life loving, praising and worshiping God. In Psalm 122 he appreciates and welcomes the times he can worship God and sing his praises. He speaks of rejoicing as we do when we come to worship as a community of believers. Here we are almost in July and I wanted to update you on some activities to be thinking about for this fall. I was approached by some members to consider offering First Communion, or the Sacrament of the Altar, to children younger than the age of Fifth Grade. This is the practice of many churches. In the past I have offered it to children whose parents and I both agree that they are ready to participate and to come to the table of Holy Communion. This was approved by the Church Council. This would require classes and the approval of parents beginning with the First graders and up. Please talk to me if you are interested in your child having these classes. That will happen in September. This summer we will be in the process of a New Member classes and welcoming them into the church. When we worship together as the body of Jesus Christ we strengthen and build each other up as we go through life. Please be in prayer about those who are in discernment to join or worship with us. This will happen in August. On August 31 st , 2014 our missionaries Patrick and Jacqueline Bencke who serve the church in Kumamoto, Japan on the island of Kyushu will be visiting and sharing experiences on Sunday morning at worship with a pot luck dinner. Only one percent of the people are Christian, so witnessing to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is a HUGE challenge. First Lutheran helps support the witness of the Bencke's in Japan through our gifts and offerings. Please plan on attending as we share time together and hear where our mission dollars are going. Last September we celebrated 25 years in the ELCA by participating in “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday. We worshiped together and broke bread, we shared a meal together, and after that we went out into the community to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. This was such a fun day! The plus is that we served. We are planning on making this an annual activity. It will be our kick-off to the fall activities on September 7 th , 2014. “I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD!” Psalm 122:1

Gathering together to worship God is a joy and a blessing! David writes these words as he continued in his life loving,

praising and worshiping God. In Psalm 122 he appreciates and welcomes the times he can worship God and sing his

praises. In his life of turmoil and strife he had times when he couldn’t or was unable to worship God as he wanted. That

happens sometimes. He speaks of rejoicing as we do when we come to worship as a community of believers.

Here we are almost in July and I wanted to update you on some activities to be thinking about for this fall. I was

approached by some members to consider offering First Communion, or the Sacrament of the Altar, to children younger

than the age of Fifth Grade. This is the practice of many churches. In the past I have offered it to children whose parents

and I both agree that they are ready to participate and to come to the table of Holy Communion. This was approved by the

Church Council. This would require classes and the approval of parents beginning with the First graders and up. Please

talk to me if you are interested in your child having these classes. That will happen in September.

This summer we will be in the process of a New Member classes and welcoming them into the church. When we worship

together as the body of Jesus Christ we strengthen and build each other up as we go through life. Please be in prayer

about those who are in discernment to join or worship with us. This will happen in August.

On August 31st, 2014 our missionaries Patrick and Jacqueline Bencke who serve the church in Kumamoto, Japan on the

island of Kyushu will be visiting and sharing experiences on Sunday morning at worship with a pot luck dinner. Only

one percent of the people are Christian, so witnessing to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is a HUGE challenge. First

worshiped together and broke bread, we shared a meal together, and after that we went out into the community to be the

hands and feet of Jesus Christ. This was such a fun day! The plus is that we served. We are planning on making this an

annual activity. It will be our kick-off to the fall activities on September 7th, 2014. Do you see a need in the community

Weddings: Unity in holy Matrimony on Saturday, June 28th were Peggy Jerry and Wayne Cessna

with Pastor Brenda officiating. We pray for God’s blessing upon these relationships. May they grow

together each day in the love of Christ.

We express our Christian sympathy to the family of Audrey Ellstrom.

While we mourn with them, we also celebrate the resurrection hope that we

have through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Thank you to all who donated items for the Garage Sale and those who help organize and worked at the sale. It was greatly appreciated.

Mission Statement:

We are called by God to grow in faith together,

sharing Christ’s love with each other and our community.

First Lutheran Church Council Minutes- May14, 2014 I. Meeting called to order by Chair Dennis Volden.

Present: Rick Kroschel, Dennis Volden, Carol Goddard, Scott Jensen, Wendy Reamer and Don

Peterson.

Absent: Tom Lymburner, Gerald Souers, Nicole Smith, Robin Hendrix

Also Present: Pastor Brenda. Mindy arrived at the end of the meeting

II. Open Devotions: Rick Kroschel June: Robin Hendrix

III. Officer Reports:

A. Secretary’s Minutes of the April Meeting were not approved as read. Corrections to Secretary’s report

are as follows: Nicole Smith and Jill had attended the meeting. Scott Jensen was absent. Motioned by

Rick/seconded by Carol.

B. Treasurer’s report was approved by Scott/seconded by Don. There was much discussion regarding this report

as the council has been seeing a drop in the last two years which is concerning. Expenses are over budget as of

right now yet Jill stated it is only 1% over budget and that is because we paid off items in the first quarter that will

last all year long so it will catch up. Examples are the Audit review and Service Contracts which were paid in

January for the whole year. Financial Secretary was given 20 hours to update the web page. Discussions on

Furnace fund raising as the chart has not been updated. Dennis stated the council has failed this task and Jill will

assume the responsibility to update the chart. General fund is in the red. Council discussed what we can do and

how we need to watch this fund and people may have to wait to be paid until there is money in there. The

delegate meeting was increased as it was moved from the Grand Rapids church to Breezy Point which put us way

over budget. Jill has fixed the maturity dates and the interest fund is almost to $500.00 slowly increasing.

IV. Counters: June: Elliott Golly and Dennis Volden July: Tom Lymburner and Gerald Souer.

Still concerns with the counting as we have been off yet the bank is calling Dennis Volden right away to discuss

what they found to be incorrect. All is being reconciled and this last time was in our favor.

V. Board Reports: See reports There was a motion by Rich to do a community Dinner and seconded by Carol. The

Stewardship board will do their own fundraising.

VI. Old Business:

A. Personal committee: Happy to hear Brenda has weekly staff meetings with all employees and Dennis has met

with all except Diane.

B. Property board – 4 new chairs for the office were donated by Wendy Reamer and her work. See attached

notes that lay out the details of the updates that are wished for. Using the parsonage money to do the

updates. Came to $53,000.00. Need to hold a church meeting. Scott will speak at church to bring people up to

speed and the need to for them to attend the meeting to discuss the updates presented. Piano has been

asked to be purchased. Vacuums – only one working and could not fix the other one. Motioned by

Don/seconded by Scott to purchase a new vacuum for up to $200.00 and to take the money out of the interest

fund.

VII. New Business:

A. Carnival Stand will be housed by the Youth this year as a fundraising event for the Mission Trip. Fee’s have

already been paid and Colleen will be assisting with the set up.

B. Left over lumber – do we wait until fall and then set out and say free will donation to take? This was tabled

until next month.

C. God’s work our hands – Boards need to think about what to do for outreach and bring back to the council

ideas.

VIII. Director of Youth and Family Report: VBS June 9th – 13

th – Theme is Athens Need helpers

IX. Pastor’s report: God’s work our hands – she would like to see the boards to think what to do for outreach and

bring ideas back to council.

X. Motion to adjourn by Scott seconded by Rick.

Respectfully submitted by Wendy Reamer
