MISSION Following the Way of Jesus, we celebrate inspirational worship; create life-changing experiences for children, youth, families, and individuals; and practice meaningful congregational care. While respecting our diversity, we courageously advocate for justice and mercy, and intentionally respond to the needs of our community and the world. SHARING GOOD NEWS–JANUARY 2020 Dear friends, Over the last few weeks, I've been thinking a lot about year-end retrospectives and new year's resolutions. I've also been thinking about ancient psalms because there is a psalmic formula that looks backward and then forward. The Psalmist looks back and reminds God of the wonderful things God has done; a petition for the future follows; and the psalm concludes with some praise for God. It's human nature to look at the past. We reflect, sometimes wistfully as in, 'Those were the good old days.' and sometimes joyfully as in, 'Thank God things are different now!' One thing is certain, we cannot live in the past. I've been here for an entire year now and I'd like to take a look back and then take a peek forward to the promise of seeds planted. I have seen open hearts and open hands giving, sharing, cooking, blessing, helping, cleaning, and encouraging. I've seen all ages and abilities joining together to offer the ministries of the church. I've seen smiles and tears and hugs and a “Hospitality Moment” that begins even before the pastor finishes introducing it. Many of our undertakings were a communal effort and I am grateful to those who participated! In addition to all of the regular and ongoing board and committee work, we also had a number of special ventures. Thank you to the folks who were a part of the Pumpkin Patch, Village Faire, Thursday Worship, Wreaths & Greens, Summer Concerts, Beach Cleanups, Christmas in the Village, Parade Hospitality, Ecumenical Turkey Dinner, Leadership Retreat, Mission Trip, Kids' Camp, Gratitude Lunch, and the Land Agreement process. Over the last year, we started a Book Group, participated in Portsmouth Pride, and updated our Safe Church policy (more info to come from Pastor Dan). We've also begun a new Creation Care Committee, an ad-hoc Security Team, and a Vitality Team (see Sue Wierzba's article in this newsletter). A View From the Bench Happy Musical New Year! The Sanctuary Choir will be celebrating Communion and Epiphany on the first Sunday of 2015 by offering Bob Chilcott's hauntingly beautiful new setting of Christina Rosetti's "In the Bleak Midwinter." My favorite line of the famous poem is: "If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part. What can I give Him? Give my heart." On January 11 the Fourth Street Jazz Choir (the adult vocal jazz ensemble from Dover which I conduct) will be our special musical guests. They will be performing Bob Chicott's "A Little Jazz Mass" incorporating the five traditional mass movements into our service. Honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., "Gospel Music Sunday" will feature special music by the Sanctuary Choir and the Bow Tie Guys. Our Children's and Youth Choirs will sing on the final Sunday in January. On that same day, the Seacoast Community Chorus (SCC) will present its Winter Concert at 3:PM. Several members of the Sanctuary Choir belong to SCC and will be performing "All Creatures Great and Small." Music of Mendelssohn, John Rutter, Randall Thompson will be in the repertoire. Joseph Martin's setting of the classic children's story "The Song of Wisdom from Old Turtle" will be the highlighted piece. Finally, during these chilly and dark days of January, let's remember the song of the Christmas angels: "Glory to God in the highest and peace to God's people on earth!" Blessings and thanks, WSP
