Menapians hold multi-events day MENAPIANS ATHLETIC Club held a Multi Events Chal- lenge for young athletes in Rosslare last weekend. The aim of the event was to encourage everyone to try a new event and, on the competition side, to prepare ath- letes for the upcoming County T&F Championships (May 7&14). Participants got the chance to step outside the comfort zone by trying a new event, learn the rules and enjoy expert coaching. Most importantly all had a fun and enjoyable morning of athletics. Sinead and Alan take road race titles THE MR Oil County Wexford Inter- mediate Road Race Champion- ships took place in Craanford last Sunday. Hosted by Croghan A.C. it was a perfect day for running with glorious sunshine and little wind. In the women’s 4km race Sinead O’Brien of Kilmore A.C. opened an early lead and comfortably held that right to the finish. She was fol- lowed by Kelly Long (Slaney Olym- pic) in 2nd and SBR’s Louise Gre- gan 9 secs further back in 3rd. Slaney Olympic, with four athletes in the top ten, took the team title with SBR in second and Slaney Olympic’s “B” Team in 3rd. In the Men’s race Conail Cooper took an early lead in lap one of the two lap 8km race. Cooper was gradually reeled in, and passed, by County Novice Road Race winner Alan O’Connor (United Striders). O’Connor went on to take the title with Cooper holding on for 2nd from the fast finishing David Kehoe (Slaney Olympic). The team race was an extremely close affair with Slaney Olympic the champi- ons on 31 points. They were fol- lowed by SBR who, despite having four in the top ten, still ended up 2 points adrift on 33 points. Howev- er, it is at this point that nails really were bitten to the quick as hosts Croghan A.C. also finished on 33 points! When the placings were studied the Silver medals went to SBR and Croghan settled for Bronze. David in scintillating indoor form SATURDAY LAST saw the juvenile indoor season draw to a close with the third, and final, day of the Irish Life Health National Juvenile Indoors Champi- onships in Athlone. Once again it was a really good weekend for the county’s athletes. Menapians A.C.’s star sprinter David McDonald rounded off his indoor sea- son in style with a win in the U19 200m in a scintillating time of 21.46. This places the Wexford athlete top of the Irish Senior rankings for 2017. The time is a personal best for David and is also his fourth qualifying time for the European Junior Cham- pionships which take place this summer in Italy. David’s team mate Ciaran Maher was also in great form making the same final and, despite getting the tight lane 1, still managing an excellent 23.24s, a time just outside his best. Aoife Cloke Rochford (Bree A.C.) picked up where she left off last weekend when she won the silver medal in the 60m. In the 200m (U19) she ran well within herself to win her heat. She really opened up in the final to take another silver medal with a super new personal best of 25.05. Aoife rounded off a wonder- ful indoor season by win- ning the U19 60m Hurdles in a new pb of 9.18s. Two silvers, one gold and a national title in such a com- petitive age group is a huge achievement. There was great excite- ment when Bree’s Sean Rowley set a Championship Best Performance (CBP) in the U13 60m Hurdles with a time of 9.48s. When he took to the track again for the final he not only cruised to victory but bettered his time again, running 9.43s. National title and two CBPs in one day - nothing wrong with that. Fellow Bree athlete Dara Casey took Silver in the U16 60m hurdles. His time of 9.16s was just 0.05 seconds behind the winner. It was also a pb. Dara is a strong and stylish textbook hurdler with wonderful technique and the temperament of a winner. Aaron Tierney Smith (Menapians A.C.), who has been in magnificent form over the hurdles this sea- son, brought things to a new level when taking bronze in the U18 60m final. His time of 8.27s is a full second fast- er than his best last year. Karyn Murphy (Ennis- corthy A.C.) placed 5th in the U17 60m Hurdles. Enniscorthy’s Ross Daly finished in 4th place in the U18 200m. In the same event Jack Hayden (Menapians A.C.) ran a per- sonal best of 23.42 in the heats but just missed out on qualifying for the final. Mind you the same Jack won bronze in the 400m last weekend so, overall, he can chalk this down as a suc- cessful campaign. Jack, along with the rest of the Menapian’s sprint crew, can now look forward to two weeks of quality training in Spain over the Easter break with squad coach Shane McCormack as they pre- pare for the outdoor season. Gergely Pap (St Paul’s A.C.) placed 5th in the U16 4kg Shot Putt. Aoife Muldoon (United Striders) placed 5th in the U18 Triple Jump. On the middle-distance front, Aaron Browne (Unit- ed Striders) was 5th in the U16 800m. Adam O’Connor (United Striders) came 6th in the U15 800m. Conn Mernagh placed 7th in the U12 600m. Conor Doyle (Bree A.C.), competing in his first All Ireland A Cham- pionship, did really well to make it into the final of the U14 800m. He went on to place 7th in the final in a new pb. Just one place behind him was Darragh Flannely (United Striders). Bree AC’s Sean Rowley on his way to winning the U13 Boys 60m Hurdles heat at the Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone. David in scintillating indoor formSATURDAY LAST saw the juvenile indoor season draw to a close with the third, and final, day of the Irish Life Health National Juvenile Indoors Champi-onships in Athlone. Once again it was a really good weekend for the county’s athletes.

Menapians A.C.’s star sprinter David McDonald rounded off his indoor sea-son in style with a win in the U19 200m in a scintillating time of 21.46. This places the Wexford athlete top of the Irish Senior rankings for 2017.
