Though the thermometer tells me different, the calendar tells me it’s autumn. Fall has fallen and for many people life is taking on a new rhythm. People with kids in school are getting into the rhythm of homework and afternoon activities. Hopefully all of us will soon fall into the rhythm of less beach traffic. At church, fall means a new rhythm as well. In the fall we begin our church’s program year, which means Bible studies, small groups, Sunday school classes, mission groups (the list could go on and on) are picking back up. Some groups take a break during the summer. For the groups that meet through the summer, fall is often a time of welcoming new faces and pursuing new directions in ministry. Fall is an exciting time in the life of First Church, and that is especially so this year.

On September 13, we will be having our annual Ministry Fair. The Ministry Fair will give you an opportunity to learn about small groups and other ministries and, most important of all, give you the opportunity to become a part of these ministries. So, whatever else you do on Sunday, September 13th, plan on spending sometime time between services and Sunday School at the Ministry Fair.

Greetings from Carol

School has begun, and the very long hot summer of 2015 will be a memory. As we look to the Fall, hopefully you will consider visiting our Ministry Fair on Sunday, September 13, this will give you a snapshot of all the opportunities for you to get involved and grow here at First Church. Participating in a Bible Study, serving as a Shepherd or assisting with First Friends, singing in one of our choirs, helping out with the Children/Youth programs, just to mention a few. Additionally being a Greeter or Usher on Sunday mornings is also a way for you to share with folks who are visiting here on vacation or looking for a new Church home. Meeting visitors, as well as members, as they enter the Church is more than a handshake and a smile. It is an expression of God’s love and helps set the tone for the upcoming worship service. We look forward to seeing you on the 13th.

Grace & Peace Carol

August Meeting: If you were present at our last meeting, you were treated to an informative and inspirational message from the Reverend Diane Moseley, Chaplain of the Killingsworth Home in Columbia. One of our own members lived there while attending school! Thank you all, again, for your generosity to the children served by HALOS. We sent two school uniforms, book bags, and supplies to more than 55 students. They will start off their school year with a positive frame of mind because of your efforts. HALOS was able to fill all requests from caseworkers.

The mission of HALOS is to provide support and advocacy to abused and neglected children and their kinship caregivers. At any given time there are around 1200 such children in Charleston County.

Our church has been a partner since the organization began, in 1997. We help each year with the back to school drive, the Christmas project, and the summer camp drive. Our sleep tight project has made beds available when families of children need help to be able to take in these children. HALOS has regular meetings for these families and provides help and guidance.

Dear Congregation, thank you so much for all of your precious cards, gifts, and notes on the occasion of my retirement. Thank you also for the lovely farewell reception following the 11 o’clock service on June 28th, and to the many of you who attended. Thank you most of all for your encouragement, support, and love throughout my nine and a half years with you. You kept all of us who make music moving forward and nearer to heaven. I am so blessed to have spent that time among and with you. Many blessings on each of you always, Jan Pickens

I BEAM BE A MENTOR

Join us for an informational luncheon Sunday, September 13, at 12:15 in the Christian Life and Learning Center at Hibben UMC. Come see how you can change the life of a child. Everyone interested in mentoring a child once a week for an hour is welcome. There is always a need for new mentors. Talk to Laura Barnes, Cynthia Carpenter, Liz Crocker, or Elaine Miskelley who have been mentors, if you would like to know what it is like.

Help Meals on Wheels Stock Their Pantry

We are going to have a food drive on Saturday afternoon, October 3, at the Seaside Farms Harris Teeter. We would love members of all ages come out to participate. We have done this in the past, and it is fun and allows many people to show their support for this organization.

Ladies, Please consider joining the MLBSG for their Wednesday morning Bible Study. Their fall session will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 9th and be held from 9:30 - 11:30. They meet weekly in the All Comer’s classroom. They will be using Steve Harper’s, Five Marks of a Methodist. This concise and compelling summary helps every United Methodist learn and remember the five identifiers that John Wesley set forth in The Characterof a Methodist.

A gem of a book, it answers in plain language, "How should United Methodistslive?" and provides the people called Methodists with a clear and memorableunifying focus.

As followers of Jesus who reach out to serve their neighbors, United Methodists:

• Love God• Rejoice in God• Give thanks• Pray always• Love others

This wonderful little book is perfect for explaining what it means to live in the United Methodist way. Each chapter ends with questions for reflection or discussion.
