For years she coped with a serious skin disease that was not helped by mainstream beauty products and eventually required facial surgeries. “It left my skin kind of red, with uneven tones,” says Sandlin.

She then began making her own petroleum-free skincare products infused with natural essential oils and cutting-edge botanicals. “I believe in pure organic products, because when you put something into your skin it goes inside of your body,” says Sandlin. “I added botanicals to it that were healing, like lavender and rose.”

Sandlin used to sell handcrafted jewelry and clothing at farmers markets, and when she added her skincare products customers kept coming back for more.

She makes some products at her Camarillo home and puts them in beautiful cobalt-blue bottles adorned with pewter decorations imported from Paris. “I wanted to add my artistic ability to my product,” says Sandlin. “They make a nice decorative element for the bathroom.”

She also refills bottles at a discount to benefit the

environment. “� e bottle is so beautiful I believe, that I don’t want people to throw them away,” says Sandlin.

About a year after starting her skincare company, Or-ganic Mist, in January of 2010, Sandlin received a diagnosis even more serious than her skin condition, ovarian cancer. Following surgery and chemotherapy, she now has a clean bill of health. She’s faced issues in her life with a positive attitude and drive to succeed. “I am a cancer thriver,” says Sandlin.

Sandlin hopes her determination makes others believe they can reach for their dreams. “I’ve gone through my chal-lenges, defi nitely, and I think it is an inspirational story,” says Sandlin. “When I was going through treatment, I kind of lost everything. And now with the help of my family, they’re help-ing me get back to business so I can move forward with my life. � ere’s always hope.” •� e products, including toners, moisturizers and face wash, are sold online at, and she takes phone orders at 482-7498. At VenturA Community memoriAl Hospital, a robot regularly performs surgeries. Guided by experienced physicians, that is. The hospital, which was the first between Los An-

geles and San Francisco to implement a robotics pro-gram, is expanding its use of the da Vinci Surgical Sys-

tem, allowing doctors to perform complex surgeries using a minimally invasive technique.

“The robot is an extension of our hands into a patient’s body,” said Dr. Marc Beaghler, a urologist and the hospital’s chief of staff. “The optics, the imaging provided by this platform is so superior to the visualization we can get laparoscopically, it’s a tremendous improve-ment over what we’ve done previously.”

Beaghler and other surgeons — already experts at laparoscopic surgery, a minimally invasive technique that uses tiny telescopes — lobbied to purchase the robot in 2004, knowing that it represented the next frontier in medicine. 88

“We realized that this technology was evolving and that it was going to change the way things were done dramatically,” he said. “We all felt that if we didn’t get this technology, we would be years behind.”

The hospital now regularly performs many urology, gyne-cology and cancer surgeries using the device. The robot allows for more precision with fewer incisions, resulting in faster healing times, less pain and fewer complications, Beaghler said.

“Quite simply, patients do better,” he said. “They get out of the hospital sooner and in general have improved outcomes from their surgery.”

As the da Vinci technology has spread to hospitals na-tionwide, patients are now requesting that their eligible proce-dures be performed using the robot, Beaghler said.

This has led a number of hospitals in the area to develop their own robotics programs, including St. Johns Regional Medi-cal Center in Oxnard, Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks.

“This technology has been pushed by patient outcome, and patients are really a large reason for seeing the growth of this technology,” Beaghler said. “They tend to gravitate to where they can get these procedures done.

“I definitely think there’s going to be more and more of a push and development to do minimally invasive surgical procedures.”

The da Vinci device — which looks like a space-age spi-

der, with its different mechanical arms — allows doctors to manipulate tiny robotic surgical instruments while viewing internal organs magnified on a screen. Patients who have surgery done with the da Vinci typically require less pain medication, have shorter hospital stays and are able to return to their normal activities more quickly, Beaghler said.

The robot can be used in vasectomies, hysterectomies, gynecological cancer operations and thoracic surgeries, among other procedures.

Beaghler, for example, uses the da Vinci to do radical prostatectomy surgeries, to remove prostate cancer.

“Now, in our area, well over 95 percent of these cases are done robotically,” he said. “Within the span of six years, most of the cases that were previously done with a scalpel and retractors, are now all being done robotically.”

Patients who have had robotic prostatectomies typi-cally lose significantly less blood than those who are operated on in the traditional way and are hospitalized for two to three fewer days, Beaghler said.

In 2011, the hospital purchased the latest robot model. Beaghler is now working to get da Vinci updates that will allow some surgeries to be performed with only one incision, instead of the two made now.

“I think that we have really been on the cusp of getting the latest technology, and this technology has been proven to be far superior to open surgical procedures,” he said. •

numerous steps involved in attaining the fit body that we so badly desire, but how far does that knowledge really take us? how often should we go to the gym? how many tedious minutes do we need to sweat on that God-forsaken treadmill? are we destined for egg whites and chicken breast for the rest of our dieting days?  

Let’s de-mystify, shall we? The “tone” muscle on everyone’s wish list must come from muscle stimulation, i.e., weight training. This entire process, along with every other action you perform daily, is fueled by the food you put in your body.
