Kieza Steps Up: Sophomore guard Loren Stokes(Buffalo, NY) wasn’t the only Pride player to come onstrong at the end of last season. Junior forward AurimasKieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) came off the bench for thefirst 20 games of the season, averaging 3.3 points and2.4 rebounds per game. However, injuries began to taketheir toll, and Kieza was pressed into starting duty for thefirst time on Feb. 4 against Delaware. He also came upbig in the clutch on several occasions, scoring 10 pointsin the final 3:26 of regulation to lead Hofstra to a 63-61win over Delaware on Feb. 4. He knocked downconsecutive threes to turn a 48-48 tie into a 54-48 Pridelead, and then shot 4-of-4 from the foul line in the final 26seconds of the game to help seal the win. He then hit ahuge three-pointer with 1:30 left in the Pride’s 80-79comeback win over Old Dominion, cutting the lead to 79-77. Against Towson on Feb. 25, Kieza scored eightpoints in a pivotal 11-2 Hofstra run that gave the Pride itslargest lead at 62-51 with 2:30 to play.

Radziejewski One Shy Of 100 Threes: Seniorforward Michael Radziejewski (Jackson Heights, NY)enters the 2004-05 season with 99 three-pointers in hiscareer, needing only one to become the 11th player inschool history to record 100 three-pointers. He alsoneeds seven three-pointers to reach the top 10 on theschool’s all-time list, tying Anthony Davis, who playedfrom 1995-99. Norman Richardson (1997-2001) holdsthe all-time record with 192 (see chart below).Radziejewski is the last link to Hofstra’s 2000-01 NCAATournament team, which finished 26-5 after opening itsseason by winning the FIU Tournament. Radziejewskiredshirted that season as a freshman.

Changing Roles: Senior forward MichaelRadziejewski (Jackson Heights, NY) began the 2002-03season as the Pride’s starting shooting guard, beforeeventually sliding over to the small forward position. Thisyear, he is likely going to see time at power forward insome smaller line-ups, at least until senior centerWendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) comes back from hisseason-ending knee injury.

Souffrant Sixth In Assists: Senior point guardWoody Souffrant (Brooklyn, NY) currently ranks sixth all-time at Hofstra in career assists with 321. He needs 34more to move into a tie for fifth place with Rich Laurel(1973-77). The all-time record of 660 is held by Craig“Speedy” Claxton (see chart below):

A Quick Starter: Sophomore guard Carlos Rivera(San German, PR/Miami Christian) started his first 21collegiate games before being injured in a Feb. 4 winover Delaware. To find the last freshman to begin hiscareer as a regular starter, you have to go back to currentGolden State Warrior Speedy Claxton in 1996-97. Riverascored a personal-best 23 points on Monday, Jan. 5against VCU, shooting 6-of-9 from three-point territory, setting a Hofstra freshman record for three-pointers in agame. Rivera finished the season averaging 10.8 pointsper game before his injury.

M*A*S*H* Unit: One of the first objectives for theHofstra Men’s Basketball team this season is to simplyget everyone close to healthy again. A year ago, thePride lost starters Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) andWendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) to season-endingknee injuries within one week of each other. Both are stilltrying to return to full speed following their rehabilitationand neither played in the Pride’s exhibition game onWednesday. Last year, Hofstra players missed 78 gamesas a result of illness or injuries, while in 2002-03,members of the Pride combined to miss 103 games.

Gibson Injury Derails Strong Season: Seniorcenter Wendell Gibson (Far Rockaway, NY) was on hisway to an All-CAA caliber season when he was lost forthe season with a knee injury on Jan 28. Gibson was hurtwith 31 seconds left in a home loss to Drexel aftermatching his career high with 26 points before the injury. He had really stepped up his play for the Pride during the2003-04 season, leading the team in scoring (14.3 ppg)and field goal percentage (60.7 percent). His productionacross the board also visibly improved from his first twoseasons, particularly in field goal percentage (seefollowing note):

Wendell Gibson's Career StatisticsYear P P G RPG FG% F T %2003-04 14.3 6.2 60.7 77.02002-03 6.1 6.0 41.1 68.02001-02 6.4 5.3 44.1 73.2

Gibson From The Field: Senior center WendellGibson (Far Rockaway, NY) not only put up impressivescoring numbers last year prior to his injury, but he alsodid so in extremely efficient fashion. Gibson shot 60percent or better from the floor in 12 of his 19 games, including nine games of 70 percent or better. Gibsonranked third in the CAA and 12th in the nation in field goalpercentage (.607) at the time of his injury.

Gibson On The Boards: Junior center WendellGibson (Far Rockaway, NY) averaged 6.2 rebounds pergame before his season-ending injury, but his impactwent far beyond the numbers. At the time of his injury,Hofstra ranked fifth in the country in rebounding margin(+8.2 per game). After his injury, Hofstra was nearly deadeven in the rebounding department, tallying only onemore board than its opponents combined over the final10 games.

The Sixth Borough?: Sophomore guard CarlosRivera (San German, PR) and freshman guard JorgeLebron (San German, PR) have continued a recentHofstra lineage of Puerto Rican guards. In 2002-03,shooting guard Rick Apodaca, a current member of thePuerto Rican national team, concluded a career whichsaw him finish ninth at Hofstra in scoring (1,422 points). In 2000-01, Hofstra started an All-Puerto Rican backcourtof Apodaca and Jason Hernandez, who also scored over1,000 career points (at both UNH and Hofstra), on its wayto a 26-5 final record. That Hernadez-Apodaca backcourtstarted together for Hofstra in its last meeting with FIU inthat 2000-01 season. Rivera and Lebron grew up in thesame neighborhood of San German and have knowneach other since they were in grade school.

Chairmen Of The Boards: The Pride has developeda reputation as an exceptionally strong rebounding teamin recent years. Hofstra has led the CAA in reboundingmargin in each of its first three seasons in the league(+4.0 in 2001-02, +6.1 in 2002-03, +5.5 in 2003-04),after also leading the America East Conference theprevious year. Hofstra has only been outreboundedseven times in each of the last two seasons, whilewinning the battle of the boards at least a combined 42times. Since the start of the Tom Pecora era in 2001-02,Hofstra has been outrebounded only 22 times in 90games (24.4 percent of the time). Since the start of the2000-01 season, Hofstra has been outrebounded only28 times in 121 games (23.1 percent of the time).

Dominating The Glass: There have been 18 times inthe previous two years when Hofstra has held a double-digit rebounding advantage, including nine times in2003-04 (eight in CAA games). Hofstra went through astretch last January where it outrebounded its opponentby 10 or more six times in eight games.
