THE BRIEF

CREATE A COLOURFUL UNDERWATER VOLCANO.

MATERIALS

String, scissors (with

adult supervision), an

empty salt shaker, a

large jar, food colouring.

THE METHOD

Cut a two foot length of string with a pair of

scissors. Tie a knot around the neck of a salt

shaker with one end of the string. Double-knot it

to ensure the knot is secure. Repeat this process

with the other end of the string, resulting in a

handle to lower your shaker.

Empty and clean a large jar. Fill the clean jar

about three quarters full with cold water.

Fill the salt shaker with hot water (with adult

supervision) – as hot as you can get from your

tap – to just below the neck. Add three to four

drops of red food colouring.

Hold your salt shaker over the mouth of the jar by

the string handle. Slowly lower the salt shaker

into the jar until the shaker is completely

submerged and resting upright on the bottom of

the jar. Observe how the coloured water erupts

from the shaker into the cold water.

An amazing background

I was born in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and worked as a Theatre Sister with Professor Christiaan Barnard in Cape Town before a number of assignments across the World. I ended my medical career with the US Peace Corps a couple of years ago and decided at that point that myself and my husband, Jeremy would return to the UK. So why Painswick?

My parents moved here some 27 years ago, and it was love at first sight. Since those first glances of the view from the Beacon, the fresh air in the valleys and the unspoiled charm of the town, I knew that one day I’d live and work here. So is this retirement?

Hah! Never! I can’t see Jeremy or I retiring any time soon! The pur-chase of the business was an opportunity that neither of us knew would exist twelve months ago and after the previous owner fell ill and retired, we wanted to retain the salon for the people of Painswick. At the point we bought the property, we knew the obstacles were huge, but like any project on a listed building, we’ve had to work tirelessly to bring world-class facilities and products to the town.

What are your dreams for the salon?

I’m a people person and believe that every small town such as Painswick needs a heart. We’re still fortunate to have the Patch-work Mouse coffee house, the pubs, the restaurants and shop, but when the Post Office closed, I decided that the place needed a heart. So my first objective was to offer something that would keep people here and attract new trade – if we succeed our fellow businesses will also succeed. And your team?

They are stars and they’ve really been through the mill whilst the builders have been here. They’re also artists, just like a Sculpter who sculpts the hair around the face to present a style that's dy-namic and unique to the individual. Our customers expect some-thing lovely, but now the team is offering that little bit extra to make every Client look a million dollars. So an impressive start?

Yes, and there’s much more to come. We now are the local exclu-sive outlet for Paul Mitchell hair and beauty products and will shortly be launching the ‘Man Cave’ where Gents of all ages can come treat themselves to great styles, shaves and skincare from our expert grooming team. We've also extended our opening hours to six days per week and invested in a new website, facebook and twitter page so every-one can stay in touch with the latest news from the salon. With everyone and anyone to buy for Christmas can turn into a very expensive period which can leave you high and dry well into the New Year. However Christmas should be a time for spending time with loved ones and enjoying the company of relatives you haven’t seen for a while.

Below we have crafted a list of great homemade gifts you can give out this year that are easy on the pocket but will mean the world to your loved ones as they were made by you personally, just for them. Photo Frames What better way to remind that person how much they mean to you than by giv-ing them a homemade photo frame of a special time you spent together? And the best thing is you can make one out of all sorts of recyclable materials, such as bits of wood, old coke cans, bits of material…anything you have lying around the house can be put together to frame your favorite photos. Want to add a touch of Christmas class to someone’s house this year? Jumpers Why not pick up a plain jumper from a charity shop and jazz it up with some fes-tive flare? Tinsel, old baubles and even felt can be used to make an array of de-signs, as well as using fabric paint to create some very Christmassy patterns.

Michael Gamble & MuchLoved launch online Tribute partnership for improved family grief support

Michael Gamble has teamed up with the bereavement charity MuchLoved to offer their families a free online Tribute facility to help commemorate their loved ones.

This will be offered to families as part of the funeral arrangement process and includes the facility to share messages of condolence, display picture and video slideshows, light virtual candles and collect funeral donations.

The growth of online Tribute sites is increasing and more than 140,000 people have already chosen to share their memories and tributes on MuchLoved, a charity founded by Jonathan Davies a decade ago after the death of his brother and mother.

Jonathan believes that Tribute sites can help families in their grieving process and says:“Many families tell us that developing their site is both a rewarding and therapeuticexperience, a way to focus on doing something positive to commemorate the person you have lost, bringing family and friends together wherever they live, and at a time of grief that is invaluable.”

On a more practical note, people often want to respond to a death by collecting funeral donations to support the work or to thank a charity.
