Re: TRI- RIVERS DISTRICT FIRST ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT - AUGUST 26, 2011
Dear Friends of Scouting,
Boy Scouts of America, Tri-Rivers District, is conducting our First Annual Golf Tournament on Friday,
August 26, 2011 (Tee Time at 11:00am) at Willowbrook Golf Club in Watertown to support the Scouting
program. We are kindly asking for your support with any donation in the way of door prizes, sending a Team
of Golfers, Sponsoring a Hole for advertising, or funds to offset costs. This function will support Scouts
throughout Northern New York.
Never in our country’s history has the issue of character been more important than it is now. Our country
needs the character building values found in the Boy Scouts of America, then and now. Our new slogan for
the 21st
century is:
“STRONG LEADERS, STRONG VALUES, CHAR ACTER COUNTS”
___________________________________________________
Young people in all our communities are up against a wall; a wall of drugs, gangs and violence. They growup too soon, becoming one with the streets and facing a future that is uncertain at best. Scouting is valuable
to teaching values and building character essential to our youth’s future, to become high quality leaders of
tomorrow.
We at Longhouse Council and Tri-rivers District appreciate your generous support to the Boys Scouts of
America.
Again, we thank you in advance and want you to know that you make a difference in the life of every Scout
involved in any of our many programs. We kindly request any response by July 1st, for planning purposes. I
am also available to meet with you at your request to discuss options to help our Scouting program.
Sincerely,
Yours in Scouting

Time Saturday, August 13 · 8:30pm - 11:30pm
Location Saturday, August 13, 2011, in Watertown's Thompson park.
Created By Fort Drum Relocation Readiness Program
More Info 4th Annual Perseids Meteor Shower Watch
The Sci-Tech Museum of Northern New York is pleased to invite the community to itsnext free family-friendly event, at 8:30pm on Saturday, August 13, 2011, in Watertown'sThompson park. Although featuring observational astronomy, the evening will offer arange of other activities as well.
Between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, activities will take place at the Pavilion, including storytel-ling for the ...younger children and a workshop on fire starting with flint and steel, for theolder children.
At 9:30, weather permitting, telescopes will be set up in the field around the flag pole for viewers to observe some interesting celestial phenomena, and especially, our moon. If the sky is clear, telescopes will remain available until 11:00pm, with Sci-Tech staff point-ing out some of the intriguing objects in the sky.
Sci-Tech staff will help participants explore the nighttime sky; learn about some of thedeep sky objects; find constellations; and discover how to use the stars for navigation.
With the full moon up all night, meteor viewing will be limited. However, the Perseids Me-
teor Shower always produces at least a few bright meteors, which should be visible evenin the moon light.
The Perseids Meteor Shower is one of a number of annual meteor showers that occur when Earth's orbit takes it through a patch of space debris. The Perseids event is the re-sult of debris left by comet Swift-Tuttle, a comet discovered in 1862.
Meteors are the streaks of light one sees as a bit of debris burns up on entering our at-mosphere. If anything survives and reaches the ground, it is then called a meteorite – however, most burn up 30 to 80 miles above the Earth.
The Perseids meteors get their name from the constellation of Perseus, the Greek mytho-logical hero who slew the Medussa. Although the Perseids meteors are seen throughoutthe sky, they appear to radiate from constellation of Perseus. These meteors travel about30 miles per second - over 100,000 miles per hour.
The Sci-Tech Museum, located at 154 Stone Street, just off the Public Square in Water-town, is northern New York’s “hands-on” science museum. It features more than40 participatory exhibits for all ages - children and adults. The Museum also includes ascience gift shop, with science kits, materials and novelties for all ages.
Special this summer is BUGS ALIVE! Live butterflies going through their metamorphosis,
microscopic pond life, mealworm life cycles, spiders, and more.

Operation Kid Comfort
ASYMCA Project Strong Communities is offering FREE quilts to children of deployed soldiers through our Operation Kid Comfort Program here at the
Fairgrounds YMCA! [Please note-- if the families have moved back homeduring the deployments, we will mail the quilts to them as well].
Operation Kid Comfort addresses the emotional stress that children suffer during a parent’s absence from home due to a routine or extended deploy-ment. We offer photo transfer quilts that bear the images of the deployedfamily member, alone and/or interacting with the family, are made for eachchild in order to help comfort them. These quilts are durable, washable andmeant for the child to cuddle with, play with and sleep with. We offer lap
quilts free to children of deployed Soldiers.
Each quilt uses up to 9 photos which can be emailed or disk (preferrred) or snail mailed for scanning. Minimum usable size is 3x5 though 4x6 and lar-ger are optimal as we resize to 4x4. I have found that the more photos oneuses the better. Attached please find the application that you can print outand give to the military families. You can visit our website atwww.watertownymca.org <http://www.watertownymca.org/> also.
Please have the families email their applications and photos to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> . Or, they may dropthem off to our YMCA Fairgrounds site off of Coffeen Street in Watertown.
If you or the families have any question, please call (315) 755-2016!
