Flooding AftermathThis activity plan highlights the importance of sustainably managing our natural resources, focusing on flooding and the consequences it can have on local communities.
ObjectivesBy the end of this activity learners will be able to:

What to do
• Explaintothegroupthatflooding can affect as many as 1in 6 properties in Wales includinghousing, businesses, hospitalsand schools. Natural ResourcesWales has teams dedicatedto helping people prepare forflooding and to supporting thoseaffected by flooding.
• Askthelearnerswhethertheyor someone they know haseverexperiencedflooding?Ifrelevant to the group discussthe following:- What happened – before,duringandafter?
- How did they deal withflooding?
- Howweretheyaffected?- Howdiditmakethemfeel?- What ongoing impact did thefloodshaveontheirlife?
- Were they able to recoverfrom the effects of flooding –ifso,howlongdidthistake?
• Explaintothegroupthatflooding affects different peoplein different ways.
• Askthelearnersto:- KS2 – consider anyone they
think might find it especiallydifficult to deal with a flood.
- KS3 - think about thedifferent groups theyconsider to be particularlyvulnerable in the localcommunity and discuss thechallenges they may face inthe event of a flood.
• Splitintosmallgroups.Giveeach group a Flooding aftermathdiscussion card.
Ask them to put themselvesin the position of the persondepicted, discussing the pointson the card.
Encouragethemtowritedown specific words thatbest represent the feelingsexperiencedbythoseaffectedbyflooding.
• Feedbacktotheclassbyreadingthescenariothenexplainingthe feelings and the particulardifficulties the person on theircard may encounter.
• Eachgroupcannowpreparea short news report on theirscenario, nominating one personto be the reporter and anotherone or two people to be thecharacters.
Ask each group to write down3 appropriate questions for thereporter to ask and discuss thereplies that might be given basedon their earlier discussion. Thiscan then be performed to theclass as a short interview.
*Optional: Use a local floodingheadline to set the scene ofthe flood and get someoneto introduce the story beforeindividual groups perform.
