A new, revised standard for adhesives, fillers and sealants from Good Environmental Choice Australia has been for public comment.

GECA chose to update its adhesives standard late last year, reflecting increased demand from manufacturers to demonstrate the environmental credentials of their products. The new standard has updated criteria and now recognises joint sealants and fillers, with a stronger focus on industrial and commercial adhesives.

Key criteria include:• Products must not contain

substances which have been classified as known carcinogens, toxins, mutagens, or toxic to reproduction.

• Heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium, chromium, arsenic and others, must not be intentionally added to the product.

• Products which may lead to the release of respirable powders/dust (eg, products such as fillers, which may be sanded) must

not contain any added crystalline silica (quartz) or mica. If used, effective measures must be in place to control exposure of workers.

• The final product must only contain limited amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Formaldehyde or formaldehyde-shedding substances, must not be intentionally added to a product.

• Emissions to air and water during the manufacturing process must be effectively managed and documented. There must also be waste minimisation and energy management procedures in place.

• Limits on substances toxic to aquatic life.Following the public

comment period, the finalised standard will be submitted to the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA). Once approved, products certified under it can contribute to achieving points under the relevant GBCA’s Green Star tools.

Flowcrete Australia’s ultra-hygienic flooring solution Flowfresh Antimicrobial PU has been nominated as a finalist in the 2014 Food Magazine Awards in the Food Safety and Innovation category.

2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the Food Magazine Awards, which over the past decade has become an important focus point for the food and beverage industry to gather and discuss the latest news, issues, technologies and trends.

Flowcrete Australia designed its food-safe floor to

meet the needs of large-scale food producers, who need to consider reliability, safety and cleanliness across large areas of intensive production.

The formulation of Flowfresh provides a long list of advantages for food and beverage producers as it’s cementitious polyurethane base is exceptionally hard-wearing and creates a strong, easy to clean finish. The robust and seamless nature of this system has been designed to avoid gaps or cracks appearing in a facility’s floor, as these are prime sites for unwanted pathogens to accumulate.

Home renovations are set to boom over the next three years according to Master Builders Australia’s latest Forecast of Building and Construction.

“The new forecasts released by Master Builders predicts growth in the housing alterations and additions market of 14.9% ($96.4 billion) in value per annum on average over the forecast period to 2016/17,” Wilhelm Harnisch, CEO of Master Builders Australia said.

“The robust outlook is in stark contrast to the languid performance experienced over the last three years, when it contracted by an average of 3.2% per annum,” he said.

“The strong growth in renovations will be a shot in the arm for builders across Australia and complement the solid pipeline of work indicated by the solid lift in new building activity,” Wilhelm Harnisch said.

The Northern Territory is forecast to experience the strongest growth, with

average yearly growth of a massive 27.8% up from an average of 9.7% over the previous three years.

Not that far behind are New South Wales and Western Australia with per annum average growth predicted to be up 19% and 18.6% respectively.

Other strong performers are expected to be the ACT (up by an average of 16.9%), Queensland (up 14.6%) and Victoria (up 12.5%),”

Solid but less spectacular growth is forecast for South Australia up 3.1% and Tasmania up 1.5% on average over the three years to 2016/17.

In current dollar terms, spending on alterations and additions across Australia is forecast to average more $9.6 billion per annum in the three years to 2016/17, which is nearly 38% higher than the $7.0 billion annual average for the three years to 2009/10.

The DOMOTEX Gaziantep Machine-Made Carpet Fair celebrated its successful debut this year. Running from 26 to 29 May, the event featured 159 exhibiting enterprises occupying some 22,725 m2 of display space, with presentations focussed on machine-made carpets and floorcoverings.

Shaw Contract Group has announced two Australian design firms, Peckvonhartel and Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp as winners of a Design Is...Market Award.

In its ninth year, Shaw Contract Group’s Design Is… Award program honors architecture and design firms that are changing the very idea of what design is.

According to Shaw Contract Group Australia General Manager, Paul McCosker, Peckvonhartel’s Australian Communications and Media Authority entry and Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp’s Melton Library and Learning Hub entry represented the highest calibre of work within the government/civic segment.

“A global panel of judges consisting of some of the most profound voices in global architecture and design selected 40 winners out of more than 350 entries submitted from 25 countries,” Paul said.

“There were 16 Australian and New Zealand entries and we are elated to

see two of these entries advance to the Global Award program,” he said.

Twenty distinguished members of the design community evaluated each project based on its design solutions beyond aesthetic quality. The jurors reviewed the challenges, processes and results of each project and how each design team defined design.

Market Award winners were selected for seven segements: large office, mid-size office, small office, education, healthcare, hospitality and government/civic and will now advance to the Global Award program.

Market Award winners will be recognized in Shaw Contract Group’s annual NeoCon magazine and featured on shawcontractgroup.com.

Since 2006, Shaw Contract Group had donated over $80,000 through the Design Is…Award to support design education and social responsibility, all in the name of the winning firms.

The increasing popularity of timber decks in Australian homes has led to headlines of collapsing structures, generally caused by poor design and/or construction. The WoodSolutions Domestic Timber Deck Design Guide provides a comprehensive resource to enable both professional and DIY users to design and construct decks that conform to the National Construction code.

It is estimated that some 60% of enquiries to a popular timber technical advice service relate to timber decking. From queries about the suitability of various kinds of timber to fixing requirements and the advantages of different finishes, questions come from both professional builders and DIY deck builders and maintainers.

One of 20 titles in the range of technical design guides, the WoodSolutions Domestic Timber Deck Design Guide covers decks that are associated with Class 1 structures (such as detached houses, villas and townhouses) and Class 10 structures (such as garages, sheds and swimming pools) according to the National Construction Code (NCC) Volume 2. The guide provides general information covering everything from bushfire construction requirements and termite protection to fixing and finishes. Advice on deck use and maintenance is also included, as is an appendix with solutions to common deck problems.

Please note that for the design and construction of decks for commercial, industrial or marine applications, or where a deck has to take heavier loads such as tiles, spas or even vehicles, a structural engineer must be consulted.

NSW company, Carpet Care Services has appointed a new warehouse manager, Joel Marshel, to look after its inbound and outbound deliveries as well as organising the newly introduced equipment cleaning program.

“After attending Jena Dyco Mould conference in Melbourne two months ago, we specifically took on some advice from speaker Craig Kersemeier from K Tec cleaning in the US who runs and owns a multi-million dollar restoration and carpet installation business,” said Carpet Care’s Ross Riek.

“His business has a full department for its equipment cleaning and finds that equipment image has contributed to the business’ success and growth. Craig visited our office here in Sydney and encouraged us to develop our own equipment cleaning and maintenance program.

“We have already seen the value in keeping things tidy and clean around our business and highly recommend cleaning and maintenance of equipment as being a priority rather than a task to boost reputation with existing clients.”

Clean equipment improves business

People who deal with hazardous substances in the workplace can now complete the training and certification they require online – saving businesses a significant amount of time and money to get their employees up to speed.

Independent Verification Services (IVS) is the first company in New Zealand to offer a full training and certification package online for people who work with gases, aerosols, flammable liquids and other dangerous

substances. Its chief executive, Peter Webb, said people who work with such material are required to become approved handlers under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996. There are approximately 45,000 approved handlers in New Zealand at present who need to be re-certified every five years.

The course is broken into four modules with videos and support manuals to guide people through.

ATFA awards 2014The sixth Australian Timber Flooring Association’s annual awards were presented in Melbourne at a gala dinner sponsored by Hurford Hardwood and held at Flemington Racecourse in June. The awards reflect and commend excellence in the industry.

Melbourne business, Borthwick Floors recently won (joint) the Australian Timber Flooring Association 2014 Commercial Floor of the Year award – Site Installed.

The project that won the award was a 2000m2 floor in the NAB building in Docklands, an inner city Melbourne suburb.

This family business is a very well known and largely respected name throughout the construction industry. The techniques used, along with the quality of workmanship they have perfected over the years, have earned them the reputation of being “a wood flooring family, with sawdust flowing through their veins".

Borthwick Floors continually maintains its position as a leader in the wood flooring industry.

Perth business, Bosch Timber Floors is celebrating having just been announced joint winner of the ATFA (Australian Timber Flooring Association) Floor of the Year award in the commercial timber floor category.

Each year, ATFA calls for nominations of exceptional timber floors from all over Australia. Association members vote on nominated finalists to decide on a winner in each of four categories.

Bosch Timber Floors’ General Manager Richard Catlin commented: “I have always held the awards in high regard and wanted to make sure we had a stand out project before nominating one of our floors.

“We took matters into our own hands and created a stunning timber floor in the foyer of our office. This allowed us to use creative flare and show customers just what is possible with a timber floor.”

Bosch Timber Floors worked closely with two quality timber flooring contractors to install the floor – Rick Pagnacco from Wicked Wood developed the design of the floor then set about hand cutting and installing hundreds of individual timber pieces precisely so everything fitted.

It was clear that he was excited with the final result as he talked passionately about the project: “We discussed the functional requirements the floor had to meet and then I had a blank canvas with which to create a truly unique timber floor.

“The combination of jarrah contrasted with marri gave us two iconic Western Australian timbers that work well as timber flooring both functionally and aesthetically,” he added.

Mark Taylor and his team from Niche Timber Flooring then completed the picture by sanding, filling and coating the floor. Mark noted: “It is important with a floor like this that you sand it

at the correct angles to ensure the final product is not only level but free from sanding marks to allow the true beauty of the timber to shine through.”

The floor was coated with the Bona Traffic HD system. Mark explained: “The Bona HD is the hardest wearing coating we use and being a waterborne coating system, the timber colour remains true to its natural tones and looks fantastic with a subtle sheen. We were thrilled with the final result.”

Bosch Timber Floors has been operating in Perth for over 25 years. Alf Bosch founded the business in 1988 and grew a strong reputation for quality timber flooring and associated installation products. In 2008, Richard Catlin purchased the business with a view to building on the strong foundations that Alf and his family had established.

“Small business always throws up plenty of challenges and certainly we have endured our fair share with the GFC knocking us about soon after acquiring Bosch Timber Floors,” said Richard. “By working through the challenges, and looking for better outcomes for our customers, we have found a way to continue to operate successfully.”

Lifewood Floors in Osborne Park, WA has won the ATFA Showroom of the Year at the annual awards presentation.

The showroom displays all of the finest Australian hardwoods, many of which the company manufactures at its own timber mill in Donnybrook WA.

The award criteria was primarily focussed on the look and feel of the showroom as well as the service of the sales staff. It was also based on customer feedback on the service and product within the showroom.

Lifewood is a complete flooring solution, from the manufacturing of the floor boards all the way to installations, therefore able to provide customers with lifetime warranty. It is a sister company to the award winning bamboo flooring company, Bamboozle.

Victorian Designer Floors received the prestigious Australian Timber Flooring Association’s (ATFA) Contractor of the Year Award 2014 in recognition of the outstanding service and quality of workmanship provided to clients.

The prestigious and hotly contested National Award for Excellence was bestowed at the Association’s Gala Dinner at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne.

The ATFA panel carefully scrutinised the degree to which the competing timber flooring firms met the strict selection criteria for Contractor of the

Year. The panel focused on operating methods, quality systems, customer satisfaction and testimonials, training, showroom and business image, projects completed, innovation capabilities and new products, staff conditions and compliance with regulations.

“We are truly delighted and honored to receive this important Contractor of the Year 2014 for Excellence in Service and Quality from the Australian Timber Flooring Association. Our investment in continuous improvement of our customer value adding capabilities and innovation has indeed paid off. Our business model is based on making the timber flooring component of building projects as seamless, risk free, affordable and enjoyable as possible by giving customers innovation, choice, value and great service.” said John Beleski, Director of Victorian Designer Floors.

“Our ability to deliver projects on time and on budget for highly demanding commercial and domestic builders has now been formally recognised at a national level and this will help us grow. We are leveraging technologies, product innovations and customer service to give builders and renovators superior value and significant cost savings. ”

Marques Flooring, a family owned business located on the Gold Coast, recently won two awards at the Australian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA) awards for excellence.

The awards were Distributor of the Year and Salesman of the Year – Josh Marques.

This is the third time the company has won distributor of the year.

Retailer of the month

A successful unionW hen commercial

contractor, Peter Rossi and domestic retailer Trevor

Smelt joined forces in 2003 it was because: “We could see the advantage of incorporating both the commercial and domestic businesses together under the one roof. As well as optimising our exposure to both client bases, it gives us much better buying power with the manufacturers", explained Trevor Smelt.

To boost it's buying power further, Floors Plus joined the Independent Carpet Retailers buying group, eventually becoming a Carpet Court member in 2011.

Now, 11 years down the track, the two businessmen can look back on a successful partnership that has gone from strength to strength. They currently employ three domestic

sales staff, two commercial sales staff, one warehouse person and one admin staff.

When choosing premises to go with their budding business in 2003, Peter and Trevor found what they were looking for at a prominent intersection in Marleston, just five minutes from Adelaide's CBD.

The building has about 2600m2 of area space, including a 300m2 showroom, a 700m2 warehouse and extensive customer parking.

“We want our customers to enjoy choosing their floorcoverings and our large showroom offers a friendly and unhurried environment in which to make your selections,” said Peter.

“The warehouse is also in full view, which was a deliberate sales tactic. The bulk look gives the impression of competitive

prices – customers can see the entire rolls of carpet, rather than small samples, and most importantly, large stocks enable swift installation.

“We also import products directly from overseas, including carpet and laminate floating floors.”

Trevor added: "Carrying good stock levels can make the difference between winning and losing a job. Once customers have made their minds up, most want it to happen as soon as possible and are not prepared to wait for three to four weeks, and we can normally have carpet laid for them in two to three days.

While there is obvious appeal for retail customers, commercial clients have also found the retail arm helpful. Their clientele includes builders, commercial builders, shopfitters and developers as well as domestic customers.

"Commercial clients appreciate the wider product selection, and some of them have ventured into our

heavy duty consumer stock," Trevor explained.

Of course, Floors Plus continues to benefit from contacts established over the pair's 65 years joint experience in the industry, with many major jobs already under their belts. These include Penfolds Winery at Magill, the Baju and H2O development at Henley Beach (100 apartments), the new SAPOL building in Adeleide’s CBD, Art Apartments in the CBD (60 apartments), Baywaters Retirement Village refurbishment and Lottery Homes for Scott Salisbury Homes.

Floors Plus continues to grow and part of that is because Trevor believes that while business is tough you need to keep sourcing new products to say in front of competitors

"We find good old-fashioned service, coupled with comprehensive product knowledge and fair pricing goes a long way and keeps our customers coming back,” Trevor said.

New hand scraped bamboo

Durable and cost effective

The Golden Field Corporation has released its Green earth Artisan collection of hand scraped bamboo flooring.

Andrew Lo, Managing Director of Golden Field Corporation said: “The Artisan Collection is designed to have the rustic look of a hand crafted floor, showing all the natural wear signs of age but with the strength and practicality of a modern floor.

“In seven new and unique colours, The Artisan Collection turns any house into a home.”

A trend that has been emerging in recent years is the popularity of bamboo as opposed to traditional timber.

Bamboo is an exceptionally product with great durability and it is also a cost effective product that has a beautiful natural look without the expensive price tag.

Choosing bamboo largely comes under the same umbrella as timber flooring. The added benefit of using bamboo is that it takes the eco-friendly status of timber one step further. Bamboo, when harvested, is cut so that

the stalk remains in the ground and the plant can then re-grow to full height.

Darren Palmer's exclusive Carpet Court flooring range, Provincial Lane, includes stylish bamboo hard flooring. Exuding natural warmth and sophistication, the bamboo flooring is a designer's dream.

The easy to install four-sided planks with Unilin locking system have a tough anti-scratch coating and exceptional durability, making this a perfect flooring choice for high traffic areas.”

DisplayFlooring

Making the most of your display spaceIdeal Rollmasters has been supplying high quality Schwab roll carousel machines to the Australian and New Zealand market for over 19 years. Over 400 machines have been installed at sites that include flooring retail outlets, canvas and awning wholesalers and a glass manufacturer.

Schwab, a German based company, have been making roll carousel machines since 1972 and carpet cutting machines since 1974. The machines are made to EEC Standards (CE and TUV) and have proven to be both

reliable and durable. The first carousel machines were installed in Australia in 1995. They remain fully operational today having been maintained throughout their long retail store life with an annual service arranged with Ideal Rollmasters.

“For flooring retailers, roll carousels enable the attractive presentation of a broad selection of both carpet and vinyl rolls in a single location within the store’s retail floor space – consumers can select a suitable colour and pattern as the rolls pass by”,

explained Bill Swindon, Commercial Manager for Ideal Rollmasters.

Upon identifying a potential selection, the salesperson stops the carousel and pulls out a couple of lineal meters in order to get customer confirmation. No more pushing around heavy A-frame wheeled roll stands or, taking customers into the warehouse to see the pattern in full. With a roll carousel, sales come more easily and quickly.

The roll carousels are free standing, so they can be located away from walls in any space in a retail store. In fact, some retailers have used the carousel as a vertical roll display in the store’s showroom and then, at the rear of the machine, they can pull the carpet or vinyl off the machine to cut the required job lengths.

“The Ideal carousel can change functions, from being a product display sales unit to a storage device, the carousel is always working to create sales,” he said.

Ideal Rollmasters standard Flooring Roll carousels can be ordered in a number of configurations, accommodating roll widths of two, three, four and five metres or combinations of widths up to a maximum of five metres and roll diameters from 100mm up to 650mm.

Standard machine heights are 2.75m, 3.95m, 4.95m and 5.75m; with maximum load weight per roll carrier bar of 250kg.

The machine depth of 1570mm includes front and rear roll protection grids installed above 2.2 metres and electrical power is 415-440v 3-phase (Ideal can install an inverter to upgrade from single phase 220-240v).

The Ideal Rollmasters carousels can be loaded with either carpet and vinyl rolls combined together or with machines side by side for individual product type. Retail outlets in Europe have up to seven carousels installed side by side in a row.

Selecting the right diamond tooling is the most important decision when beginning a grinding project. To help you we’ve developed a range that have been specifically engineered for faster cutting, longer life and a superior finish. Call one of our experts or go to our website now to get the right diamond tooling for your next project ...

“To determine the configuration and quantity of carousel(s) required for displaying and controlling a retailers roll inventory, consider that a 2.75m tall x 4.0m wide carousel can hold about 12 new four metre vinyl rolls or eight new four metre carpet rolls whereas the 5.75m tall x 4.0m wide carousel can hold about 26 new four metre vinyl rolls or 17 new four metre carpet rolls,” said Bill.

“If retailers have a large in-store roll offering then custom made carousels can be an excellent choice. They can enable the full use of fixed ceiling heights in combination with multiple/extended towers either running vertically or horizontally.”

Operational safety is of concern for all machinery in the workplace and it was foremost in Ideal Rollmasters’ mind in selecting the carousels from Schwab. “German machinery is well known for its conformity to

high EEC engineering and safety standards,” said Bill.

“In the lower two metres of the carousel the roll load chains run through the Siku patented chain guided channel, which eliminates pinch points and rotating cogs/wheels. The system also prevents any chain slippage in case of chain failure, notwithstanding, the load chains breaking weight is 11 tonnes.

“Operating the machine is simply pushing a button after you have turned the key to ON or entered the pin number onto the security keypad. From an OH&S perspective, rolls can be loaded onto wheeled trolleys and then taken to the machine for loading at the prescribed height. You don’t lift a roll into the carousel, you wheel it in and set the carrier roll bars into the position for loading into chain cups.

“Ideal Rollmasters has a national network of installation and service

technicians so we can get to every city and major town throughout Australia. An annual machinery service program is available with spare parts back up to ensure the carousel is maintained in optimal working condition

throughout its long life.” In addition to the roll

carousels Ideal Rollmasters can supply automated cutting machines that incorporate a measuring device, powered cutting knife, roll-up and wrap.

Classic displays its confidence

For many years now, the Identity Matters team has been handling matting projects Australia wide and a recent installation in a busy inner city Melbourne building demonstrates that practicality and sophistication can co-exist, even on a floor mat.

Using the UltraGuard logo inlay mat, Identity Matters was able to provide a stunning result that complements the building’s smart style whilst,

importantly, being a very practical matting solution.

The UltraGuard range is both durable and provides excellent longevity along with the highest level of protection for your floor and your facility.

The unique inlay process ensures a crisp logo design without the fear of fading or discolouration and this is complemented by a sturdy rubber backing that ensures the highest level of grip for both wet and dry areas.

The acclaimed Integra Vantt range of aluminium entrance matting from Classic Architectural Group is destined to become even more popular thanks to it now being offered with a full 10 year warranty.

In an industry first, the standard warranty for the Integra Vantt 5500 and 7500 series from Classic has now been extended to 10 years. Considering that the industry average for warranties on aluminium entrance matting is five to six years, Classic has displayed its confidence in the quality and longevity of this matting by lengthening its warranties.

Classic’s range of aluminium entrance matting is now broader than ever with a variety of styles, colours and

inserts being offered to fulfil the needs of everyone, from the budget conscious buyer, right through to the fussy contemporary specifier.

Classic Architectural Group is a dynamic business that has been supplying products to the construction industry for well over 30 years. Its extensive range of entrance matting is found throughout Australia in apartment buildings, schools, airports, shopping centres, hospitals and more.

With an intimate knowledge of building codes and regulations, along with years of experience, Classic provides the personal point of difference from the initial concept right through to practical completion.

Gerflor personnel and products played a pivotal role in the success of the 2014 Volleyball World League events held in Australia over the past two months.

The events kicked off at the AIS Arena in Canberra before heading to Adelaide and Sydney where the Australai’s Volleyroos took out the series. The Volleyroos are now in Italy preparing for the next round of the international series on Gerflor Taraflex.

Chief Executive of Volleyball Australia, Mathieu Meriaux said the Gerflor Taraflex surface and installation team were critical to the success of the event – the most significant for the sport here since the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

“Gerflor has been intrinsic to the success of World League in 2014 and your partnership is valued dearly by all at VA. It has been great working with you and I look forward to reviewing our collaboration,” Meriaux wrote in his post event letter to the Gerflor team.

The events proved popular with Gerflor customers who were treated to courtside hospitality and entertainment, including an opening ceremony performance by James Blunt.

Most business owners recognise the need to have good business systems in place. In the flooring industry we are sometimes a little behind the the curve but that situation is changing and the gap between those businesses successfully making use of good IT and those who are not is growing.

It’s growing because as every month goes by new technology and applications utilising that technology are making their way into the market. The reality is that those stores that were behind

the times five years ago are much more so now.

One of the evident trends is that as businesses change hands, owners of flooring businesses are not necessarily people out of the flooring industry. New owners are coming into flooring from industries that rely heavily on IT and these people are implementing IT solutions in their flooring businesses because they understand the benefits and because it gives them a competitive edge.

Similarly, the next generation of owners are

taking over the reins in family businesses and these younger people want their business to have all of the benefits that they know can be found in a fully integrated business management system.

For all these reasons the flooring industry is becoming more IT savvy and IT is on the shopping list for more and more flooring businesses.

If introducing a new IT solution into your flooring business might be on the agenda in 2014 you may feel a little daunted at the prospect of selecting the right solution for your business. As experienced as we are in the flooring industry we may feel ill-equipped to make a decision about an IT solution.

As a starting point here are some questions that might be worth asking:• Is the solution industry

specific? • How much adaptation does

it require to meet industry needs?

• Does it address all of my needs?

• Will it keep pace with technological innovation?

• How long has the solution been in the market and how many users does it have?

• Will I get a return on my investment?

• Will it grow with me or will I end up growing out of it?

• Will it help me drive the business or does it just measure the results?

• How many people are using the software in your industry?

• Are reference sites available?

• Does the vendor and the people who will train me understand the flooring industry? Before committing to

investment in an IT solution for your business you should have satisfactory answers to those questions. You only want to make the decision once so you need to get it right.

Chris Ogden is a consultant and Managing Director of RFMS Australasia. Chris has extensive experience at all levels of the flooring industry and he can be contacted at [email protected].

A replica of Mawson’s Hut, the fragile wooden building used by the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition at Cape Denison, Antarctic, has been created. Ardex Australia has played a major role in the construction, supplying the waterproofing for this new museum based at Hobart’s waterfront.

Commissioned by the Mawson’s Huts Foundation, the replica museum attracted 9000 visitors in its first three months.

The hut was built to the exact same dimension as the original and the Baltic pine which lines the interior and exterior of the building was even imported from the same area in Scandinavia to give the hut an authentic look and feel.

“Ardex did not hesitate when we asked them to

donate specialised waterproof lining for the project at no cost,” explained David Jensen AM, Chairman of the Mawson’s Hut Foundation. “This generous support made the project possible and in turn led to further donations from other manufacturers,” added Jensen.

“Ardex was honoured to be part of such an historical project,” said Fabian Morgan, Sales and Marketing Director, Ardex Australia. “The museum is world class and will become a significant tourist attraction for Hobart. Every project Ardex works on is unique and our waterproofing solutions are highly application specific. Ardex has a wide range of rapid curing, energy efficient membranes that can stand the test of time.”

Palace Cinemas in Norton Street in Leichardt, Sydney was ready to once again become a true state-of-the-art cinema experience for everyone to enjoy. A multi-million dollar renovation with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (TZG) Architects and Signature Floorconcepts created a plush, modern, slightly industrial space with that little bit of extra oomph and sophistication to create a real “wow” factor for its customers.

Careful consideration had to be made as the initial plan was to have a hand-tufted rug insert inset into the polished concrete; the final design solution, however, was an all-over Signature Floorconcepts’ Infinite Weave Axminster carpet, which was chosen by the project architects based primarily on its ability to withstand large amounts of heavy foot traffic

and general commercial rough and tumble due to its durable properties of wool and nylon.

Signature designed a carpet that was able to harmoniously create mood and blend with the other materials used in the building fit out; however, still be a feature piece of its own. And, by using the latest design software, they were able to design the foyer and atrium carpet, which had no pattern match in the length to accommodate the large open areas in which it was installed and make clean flowing lines.

With all of its components together, Palace Norton Street has been transformed into a sophisticated yet family-friendly movie hotspot, described by some cinema goers as “funky” and the even by one reviewer as the “nicest cinema [they] have been to anywhere in the world”.

A new invention, the Canterbury Lever Handle, allows the user to operate the Lagler Hummel using an open palm grip rather then a clenched fists.

“Basically, it’s a new form of handle that fits onto the Lagler Hummel floor sander,” explained the inventor, Dale Gilbert of Canterbury Polishers, Burwood, Victoria

“The Canterbury handle creates a more even feeling because you can use the machine with two hands rather then holding the machine with your left and operating the drum with your right.

Canterbury Polishers head engineer, Dale Gilbert, designed this operating feature based on feedback of the floor sanding industry. He noticed that most customers who use a Lagler Hummel loved the machine but were not overly enthused with the existing handle set-up.

“It can also helps with OH&S issues that arise due to carpel tunnel syndrome,” Dale said.

The Department of Environmental and Primary Industries (DEPI) in Attwood, Victoria is one of the latest projects featuring Shaw Contract Group EcoWorx carpet tile installed using the Shaw LokDots installation system.

Architectural firm Spowers specified Shaw’s 18 by 36 EcoWorx carpet tile collection for the project and, in place of a traditional pressure sensitive adhesive, selected the LokDots pressure sensitive installation system as the perfect solution for the building’s access flooring.

Flooring contractors Floor 91 completed the DEPI installation and, according to Managing Director David Lauder, LokDots proved to have numerous installation benefits.

“To start off we only had to clean and prime large areas of the floor before we began a sequenced installation of the 3,400m² job,” said David.

“This, combined with the fact that we did not need to use a traditional wet adhesive, meant the area could be trafficked while we worked and that other trades could safely work around us without being exposed to any fumes.

“LokDots offered flexibility during the installation process and, because LokDot’s don't need to cure like a wet adhesive, the floor could be walked on immediately after installation,” he said.

With a focus on sustainability, Spowers also specified Shaw’s EcoWorx carpet tiles together with the LokDots system as it’s Cradle to Cradle and GECA certification ensured the DEPI building would achieve its Green Building Council of Australia Green Star 5 Star Office rating.

According to National Sales Director Aaron Martin, the handheld LokDots applicator is designed to be durable, light weight, triggerless and ergonomically safe.

“The intuitive system is designed for repetitive use and for flexible installation

in regards to perimeter and interior cutting,” said Aaron. “And, to ensure first time installers are reaping the benefits of the LokDots system from the beginning, Shaw will provide training and assistance for your team,” he said.

LokDots also represents a 97% reduction in installation material compared to traditional wet adhesive.

“Just four rolls of LokDots weighing less than 500 grams provides the equivalent installation capacity to a 20 kilogram bucket of wet adhesive,” Aaron explained.

LokDots combined with Shaw’s EcoWorx carpet tiles helps installers and end-users address common installation challenges including two of the most complicated scenarios – high moisture areas and occupied spaces.

“Using LokDots, our EcoWorx carpet tiles can be installed in areas with an alkalinity as high as pH of 12 and as much as 95% humidity,” said Aaron. “This complete system can be used where traditional adhesives fail.

“One of the other biggest differences between LokDots and wet adhesive installation is that it can be used in occupied spaces. LokDots does not need to cure like traditional wet adhesives meaning the floor can be walked on straight away and the fact that LokDots is non-toxic and low VOC means flooring can even be installed while the facility is being used.”

LokDots can be installed on virtually any surface – concrete, terrazzo, timber, VCT, VAT, raised access floor – even over pressure sensitive and multipurpose adhesive. Together with EcoWorx carpet tiles, Lok Dots is Cradle to Cradle certified and provides an economically and environmentally responsible flooring solution. LokDots also receives CRI Green Label Plus certification and can be used to contribute towards Green Building Council of Australia Green Star points.

New Zealand company, James Henry, recently installed a hand-finished wooden floor in a heritage building, Charley Noble Eatery and Bar, adjacent to Wellington’s waterfront.

“Builders LT McGuinness briefed us, saying they required a: “Recycled wooden floor that could have been the original floor in the building,” explained James Henry’s Chris Northmore.

“We used red beech as being hard wearing and the wider boards at 180mm wide stepped out from the usual boards.

“The boards were hand sanded to randomly remove paint from the previous use. Then a coating of Italian Carver Primol flooring oil colour in Cappuccino was applied, followed by moisture-cured polyurethane. The oil enhanced the red beech timber and the polyurethane provided for an easy care wipe-down surface.”

Bar tops made from recycled Matai floor joists, recycled from an old doctor’s residence and practice rooms in Masterton were also installed.

Recycled boards for stand out floor

Australian woodfiller manufacturer, Timbermate is celebrating its success at the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) show in Nashville, Tennessee, USA in April.

Timbermate was the filler supplier for one of the winning floors of the year.

When you give a client an impressive floor, they’re going to come back for more. Precision Floorcrafters’s Limited Species award winning floor was built for a client who had hired the company for six previous floors, the most recent being a four metre medallion featuring an intricate fish tessellation design.

That strong working relationship meant the client gave Precision Floorcrafters

carte blanche to develop this new floor in a new house.

The floor was designed to incorporate end-grain wood rounds, which came from cypress trees grown sometime in the 1800s. Luckily for the client, although the cypress was floated downriver after being cut with an axe, some logs never made it to a sawmill. The original round edges, washed for 100 years by river water, are still visible.

The floor took one week to install. After flattening the concrete floor, each individual round was laid once it had been hand-scraped to fit snug with adjoining pieces. The pieces were glued to the concrete. It took three more days to edge, sand and finish the floor.

Vacuum for all flooring typesWhile 91% of Australian homes have a mixture of flooring, many vacuum manufacturers concentrate only on carpet performance.

Dyson’s new DC65 is engineered specifically to deal with all flooring types. And not just floors – its tangle free turbine tool makes short work of hair-covered upholstery too.

James Dyson said: “Conventional vacuums concentrate only on carpet – neglecting other grubby areas of your home.

Dyson engineers have designed a machine which properly cleans all your floors – not just one of them.” The Dyson DC65 has:

• radial cyclone technology designed to maximise suction power;

• remodeled airflows ensure even higher suction – up to 180 air watts – to remove dirt, dust, and allergens from the home;

• 25% more brush bar power. Shorter, stiffer bristles aggravate the carpet pile to remove more dust and dirt;

• a self-adjusting cleaner head. Dyson’s base plate automatically adapts to every floor surface, creating a continuous seal to remove dust from hard floors and carpets, while protecting delicate surfaces;

• turns on the spot. More key technologies are housed inside the ball, reducing components on the outside of the machine, and making it even easier to steer under and around furniture;

• close edge pick-up, thanks to a slim frame on the cleaner head’s soleplate;

• instant release hose and wand. No catches or parts to assemble, it reaches the top of the stairs;

• tangle-free turbine. Counter-rotating heads with brushes remove hair and dirt from upholstery;

• comes with a two year parts and labour warranty.

Temporary floor protectionWhen you make last-minute touch-ups in construction or refurbishment, contractors are always working to a tight deadline. Once the floors are installed there are numerous trades that come in afterwards, so it’s essential the flooring part of the project stays clean and professional.

Self-adhesive floor protection film from All Preparation Equipment is durable, water-resistant, and not easily torn or punctured. Once it’s down, you can concentrate on the job at hand – not on what’s underfoot. It’s great for renovation and demolition, where the floor surface needs to stay protected.

Easy to apply, easy to remove, this floor protection film is completely self-adhesive. Its advanced ‘high tack’ formula ensures your surface protection film stays in place where you need it, even on very soft or deep pile carpets, for two or three weeks.

Adhesive protection film comes ‘reverse rolled’ (with the adhesive on the outside). It makes applying temporary surface protection a simple matter of unrolling the film, which securely adheres to the surface as it goes.

When the job’s done, floor protection film is simple to remove, leaving no adhesive behind on the surface you’ve protected. And it’s so cost-effective, you don’t need to re-use your temporary floor protection – just pull it up.

Make decking maintenance Ezee

Radiating the essence of Italian concepts

The care and protection of timber decking is now easier than ever with the new Sikkens Ezee deck brush.

Specifically designed to take the hard work out of coating a timber deck, this unique design combines the effectiveness of a soft-bristle paint brush with the convenience of a long-stemmed roller.

“Pure bristle brushes are the best way to achieve a smooth, even finish when coating a deck, however getting down on hands and knees is uncomfortable for many and may be unachievable for those with mobility issues,” said Tim

Orbell of Tenaru Timber and Finishes, the distributor of Sikkens products.

Featuring a soft 175 mm pure-bristle brush, the Ezee Deck Brush ensures coatings are worked evenly into the grain of the timber, while the long, broom-like handle allows large areas of deck to be coated from a comfortable standing position.

Conceived, designed and manufactured in Italy, Piemme Valentino Tiles are a product of the highest quality values.

The combination of the purest of raw materials, together with the meticulous work by specialised personnel and the most advanced productive technology, made possible the realisation of something that cannot be simply defined a ‘tile’ but a real furniture surface.

The Prestige Valentino wall tiles combine Florentine brocade, inspired by the historical Italian Renaissance fabrics, with precious mother of pearl. The result is accurate definition and an iridescent effect, reflecting light in a room and spreading warmth and precious detail.

Only after decorating, firing and mechanical grinding are the best prestige slabs selected by specialised personnel and sent to a further manufacturing cycle – it is at this final point the tiles become ‘prestige design’ slabs.

Ceramiche Piemme’s Valentino tiles are available in Bianco and Nero with the Broccato and Mother and Pearl finish. They are distributed nationally through Delsa.

Reduce costs, time and labourThe Makinex Mixing Station MS-100 makes mixing and applying floor levelling compounds easier and quicker with contractors claiming the efficiencies gained pays for the unit in no time.

Contractors can significantly improve efficiency by using the Makinex Mixing Station MS-100 made up of a 100 litre bucket, lightweight aluminium frame and stirrer. The MS-100 can mix a 100 litre batch of levelling cement consistently allowing contractors to confidently take on jobs up to 1500m2 without the need for a pump. For larger jobs up to 6000m2, multiple mixing stations can be used.

With a built-in timer, the MS-100 can mix up to 100kg hands-free in only three minutes, freeing up contractors to prepare surfaces and undertake other tasks while mixing. The portable and

lightweight MS-100 mixes self-levelling cements, compounds and epoxies quickly, and then easily tilts to give control, speed and precision when pouring.

John McKenzie from Ideal Floor Topping in Strathfield, NSW stated: “We had a job that required 240 bags of bulk compound to be applied. I anticipated the job would take about eight hours but we got hold of the Makinex Mixing Station and finished the job in two and a half hours with one less staff member than I would usually use.

“I have worked in the flooring industry for over 20 years and would say the Makinex Mixing Station is a definite time saver for contractors.
