The textile market has recently known technological innovations that increase productivity and minimize pollution, digital printing being one of them. However, certain operations such as sizing have not evolved yet.

Today, sizing, the operation that protects the fiber before weaving, generates effluents with high levels of COD pollution.

This has driven SNF to develop a range of sizing agents that provide high fiber protection and low COD in effluents, FLOSIZE™.

Chosing the appropriate FLOSIZE™:In order to define a sizing recipe using FLOSIZE™, it’s necessary to indentify the relevant parameters of the fiber itself as well as the sizing machine and the existing recipe.

FLOSIZE™ instructions:Once the FLOSIZE™ based recipe is defined, it is important to ensure a proper dispersion in the cooking tank of the sizing machine in order to avoid lumps formation whatever the cooker design used.

This procedure should be strictly followed:

Too much penetration, no surface coating.

Too little penetration, no anchoring of yarn structure. Optimal distribution.

Too much penetration, more size added to provide surface coating.

1 Slowly introduce FLOSIZE™ under gentle agitation. This operation should take 5 minutes.

2 Add low molecular weight polymers first

3 Heat up to 90°C ±5°C

4 Stir at 90°C for 15-30 minutes

Check if there are any viscosity or temperature variations of the sizing liquor when transfering from the cooking tank to the sizing bath.

STEP 1 : COOKING

NOTE:

The sizing box temperature should be maintained at 85°C ±5°C, for Lyocell and viscose sizing, the temperature should be maintained around 70-85°C. It is important not to leave the steam valve open per-manently to avoid dilution of sizing liquor and therefore viscosity loss.

The circulation pump may cause a drop in viscosity. If such is the case, a recipe with a higher initial viscosity must be chosen.

If the FLOSIZE™ products are blended with starch, first introduce the starch in the cooking tank then the FLOSIZE™ products.

STEP 3: PERFORMANCE evaluationA preliminary evaluation of the sizing performance can be made in laboratory by measuring the following parameters on the sized yarn:

• Abrasion resistance• Elongation at break• Tensile strength• Hairiness of the yarn

However a full evaluation can only be made at the end of the weaving operation.

1. Add the estimated water quantity.

2. Weight the different FLOSIZE™ products needed for the trial.

3. Introduce slowly the FLOSIZE™ quantity in the vortex created by stirring.

4. First add the low molecular weight products and finish with the highest. This operation should take around 5 minutes.

5. Add the wax if needed.

6. Stir at the highest speed setting and start heating.

7. After a few minutes, decrease the stirring speed.

8. Heat until the temperature reaches 90°C ±5°C.

9. Maintain stirring at 90° for 15-30 minutes.

10. Add water to obtain the final volume needed.

11. Measure the viscosity of the sizing mixture.

12. Measure the refractive index.

1. Measure the viscosity of the sizing liquor in the sizing box.

2. Adjust the cylinder temperatures based on moisture content and the sizing speed required.

3. Adjust the squeezing cylinder pressure to adjust the penetration of the sizing liquor and to control the wet pick-up.

4. Apply an after waxing softener to aid yarn seperation.
