FLOW METER THEORY
Accuracy
The graph shows the percentage of accuracy (±) for the different flow range of a meter. All Netafim meters, with exception of the Dishnon, are tested and certified with a serial number and the test result with plus and minus accuracy limits and will be within the limits as described in the graph.
Original terminology New terminology
Explanation of accuracy curve and terminology
Qzero = Zero flow rate is when no flow is passing through the meter.
Qmin [Q1] = Minimum flow rate (m3/h) is the lowest flow rate measured within ±5% accuracy.
Qtrans [Q2] = Transitional flow rate (m3/h) is the lowest flow rate measured within ±2% accuracy.
Qnom [Q3] = Nominal flow rate (m3/h) is the upper limit for continuous working.
Qmax [Q4] = Maximum flow rate (m3/h) is the permissible peak flow rate for short periods (pipe filling).
Important points
Never use any meter between Qzero and Qmin [Q1] or above Qmax [Q4]
The best is to size the meter between Qtransitional [Q2] and Qnominal [Q3]
If required exceed Qnominal [Q3] by 10%
Always obey rules of installation:
- Position of meter will mostly be with dial facing upwards and horizontal.
- Straight pipe before (10d) and after (5d) meter, unless otherwise specified.
1. Install an air valve before flow meter. Air moves 29 times faster than water and will give incorrect readings and shorten the life of the meter.
2. Always install PRV (pressure reducing valve) downstream of the flow meter.
3. All meters should be constantly full of water during operation.

Flow Meter – Registers and Reed Switches
Six-digit register, with big clear numerals for high totalizing capacity, standard with leak detector and three pointers for testing accuracy, which reduce testing time to minimum. Different registers are available:
1 2 3
Main unit
Register
Leak detector
Pointer - Left
Main unit m³ m³ m³ x 10
Pointer - Right 0.01 0.1 1
360° rotation = ℓ pulse 1 000 ℓ x 0.01 x 10 = 100 ℓ 1 000 ℓ x 0.1 x 10 = 1 000 ℓ 1 000 ℓ x 1 x 10 = 10 000 ℓ
Note: 360° rotation of the right hand side pointer will always equal the value of the last register digit.
Pointer - Centre 0.001 0.01 0.1
360° rotation = ℓ pulse 1 000 ℓ x 0.001 x 10 = 10 ℓ 1 000 ℓ x 0.01 x 10 = 100 ℓ 1 000 ℓ x 0.1 x 10 = 1000 ℓ
Pointer - Left 0.0001 0.001 0.01
360° rotation = ℓ pulse 1 000 ℓ x 0.0001 x 10 = 1 ℓ 1 000 ℓ x 0.001 x 10 = 10 ℓ 1 000 ℓ x 0.01 x 10 = 100 ℓ
IMPORTANT: Each meter has a dedicated register and is not interchangeable between different meters. All registers are marked to identify them, example (register 3) IRT 80 for Irrigation Meter 80 mm and Qn 90 m3/h to indicate the nominal flow rate of the meter. Below is an example of all the data for register 1 above.

Flow Meter – Reed Switches
A reed switch is a dry contact (activated by a magnet) that does not consume electric power, that consists of two metal plates that is normally open and the ends of one side are connected to wires (1.5 m) that can be connected to the control unit. The magnet installed in one of the pointer positions rotate as the gear ratio will determine and when it passes the reed switch (360° rotation of the pointer) the two metal plates will give a close contact and a pulse will be received by the control unit.
Specifications:
Maximum Volts Vmax = 48 Volt Maximum Ampere Imax = 50 mA Maximum pulses 2 Hz (2 pulses per second)

Reed Switch Pulses Litre m³/h
Do not select “grey values”. It will either give pulses to fast for the automation equipment or pulses will be to far apart and the "Un-Open" alarm will be activated. Check with automation supplier. Also see Automation Design criteria. When injecting fertilizer, pulse intervals are critical for reaction time.
For the Motorola "Single Cable" (Piccolo RTU) the frequency between pulses must be greater than 10 seconds. For Priva Equipment the frequency between pulses must be less than 10 seconds. Use above flow meter table to select a “Reed Switch” for Netafim Midrange Controllers (NMC).

Measuring Principle
The sound wave that flows in the direction of the stream moves faster than the one that flows against the stream. The transit times tAB (transit time of ultrasonic waves from sensor A to sensor B) and tBA (from sensor B to sensor A) is measured continuously. The time difference (tBA - tAB) is directly proportional to the mean flow velocity (vm) of the product. The flow rate is a result of the velocity multiplied by the cross section of the size of the meter.

Handling the flow meter Important information:
Do not lift the Octave by the electronic housing.
Do not carry the Octave by its lid.
Do not place Octave on the electronic lid.
When handling the Octave, avoid hard blows or impacts.
Important installation notes:
For proper flow measurements, the Octave’s measuring tube should be completely full of
water at all times. Non-wetted sensors show loss of signal. Though this will not cause
damage to the meter, it will however not measure flow and will display zero.
The Octave is a bidirectional flow meter, please note the indicating arrow on the display for
flow direction (forward or backward flow).
In case of direct sunlight exposure, it is recommended to keep the lid close.
Do not expose the Octave to excessive vibration. To avoid vibration, support the pipeline on
both sides of the meter.
To avoid measuring errors due to air, observe the following precautions:
- Air collects at the highest point, never install meter at the highest point.
- Always install control valve (PRV) downstream of the meter to avoid cavitation.
- Never install meter on the suction side of a pump, to avoid cavitation.
Digital Display:
Power source: 2D size Li-battery with 10 years life time. NB
Version 3.00 LH20110714 NSA Product Guide – Flow Meters Page 22
ELECTRICAL OUTPUTS
Digital Output: Pulse
The Octave has a dual pulse output.
It is an open collector pulse type that allows current of 200mA and up to 50 VDC.
The pulse is factory programmable with a maximum resolution value of 1 ms.
Standard cable length is 3m and can be extended to a maximum of 100m.
Output wire colours: - Black (GND) and Green = Output 1 - Black (GND) and Red = Output 2
Warning: Signal connection polarity is mandatory.

Analogue Output: 4 – 20mA
The current output is a passive 4-20mA.
4mA is always “0” (zero) flow and 20mA is factory programmable according to the customer requirements. If the customer did not specify, the 20mA will be the maximum flow rate.
Cable length = 3m (maximum)
Loop supply voltage = 12 – 24 VDC
Output impedance = 25 *MΏ+ typ
Output wire colours: - Black = current loop “-“ - Red = current loop “+“
Warning: Signal connection polarity is mandatory.

FERTILIZER FLOW METER – INSTALLATION
Important:
1. Install dosing stock (fertilizer) tank 500 mm higher than dosing equipment. 2. Ball lever valve for tank isolation. 3. Chemical filter – over design. 4. Install dosing meter with register facing horizontal. 5. Dampening pipe (75 mm class 9 PVC) to absorb fake pulses. 6. N/C (normally close) fertilizer valve to prevent dosing under siphon conditions when no
dosing is programmed. 7. PVC pipes – always use class 9 or 12 pipe for structural strength and neatness of installation. 8. Install a non-return valve at injection point to mainline. 9. Always allow that dosing system can be isolated, that pressure can be removed when service
is required. Allow that dosing equipment can be flushed with clear water. 10. Select correct equipment (meters, valves and pump(s) and pipe sizes) - see individual product
specifications.
