Key PartsPlacenta - attached to the uterus and allows materials to pass between the mother and foetus

Umbilical cord - carries blood between the foetus and the placenta

Amnion - the bag which surrounds the foetus (contains amniotic fluid) aiding protection

The foetus gets all its materials for growth and development from the mother

But - all materials within the mother’s blood can be passed to the developing foetus - including harmful substances such as virus’ or dangerous chemicals

This is why smoking not only kills the mum, but also their unborn baby!
