PREFACE
THESTRONGSUPERTROUPERIISYSTEMconsistsofadirectcurrentxenonlamphouseandanadvanced-designlensmechanismconstructedandalignedonacommonbaserail.Operatorcontrolsareeasilyaccessiblefromeithersideoftheunit.Thespotlightheadincludesasix-color,self-cancelingcolorboomerang,andmountstoacollapsiblebasestandandyokeassembly.Aswitchingtype,solid-statexenonpowersupplywithakeyedquick-disconnectlamphousecablereceptaclecompletesthefollowspotlightsystem.
ONLYTHESPECIALPOWERSUPPLIESmanufacturedbyStrong Internationalcanbeusedwiththexenonspotlight.Currentleveladjustments(DCoutputtothexenonbulb)aremadeatthepowersupplybymeansoftwooutputpotentiometers.Fordetailedinformationregardinginstallationandoperationofthexenonpowersupply,seetheinstructionmanualfurnishedseparately.
THEXENONLAMPHOUSEutilizes a deep ellipse dichroicmetal reflector designed tooperateinafixedpositionwithahorizontallymountedxenonbulbasthelightsource.TheDCPulseIgniterrequiresnoACcontrolcircuit.Acoatedglassheatfilterislocatedatthefrontopeningofthelamphousetoreducetheradiantheatattheopticalsystemandcolorboomerang.
THELAMPHOUSEINSTRUMENTPANELisequippedwithaDCammeterandrunningtimemeter.TheammetercontinuouslydisplaystheoperatingDCcurrent,andpressingtheVOLTS/AMProckerswitchwillmomentarilyindicatetheDCvoltageatthearc.Thehourmeterrecordstheoperatinghoursofthexenonbulb.ThebulbisignitedandextinguishedthroughuseoftheLAMProckerswitchmountedontheinstrumentpanel.
ONLYXENONBULBSdesignedforhorizontaloperationshouldbeusedinthisspotlight.Thepresentlyapprovedratingsforbulbsusedinthisspotlightare1000,1600,and2000watt,type“HS.”Seethelistinginthismanualfortheapprovedtypesandnecessaryadapters.
ADJUSTMENTCONTROLSforpositioningthexenonbulb inside theellipticalreflectorarelocatedabovetheinstrumentpanelattherearofthelamphouse.Theadjustmentscontrolthehorizontal,vertical,andfocalpositionofthebulb.
THELAMPBLOWERS,internallywiredinthelamp,operateon115V.ACandarerequiredtokeepthesealsonthebulbatasafeoperatingtemperature.Theseblowerswilloperatecontinuouslyuntilpoweristurnedoffatthemainlineswitchtothexenonpowersupply.Operationoftheblowerstocoolthebulbafteraperformancewillnotberecordedbythehourmeter.TheSuperTrouperIIlamphouse,when using a factory-approved, ozone-free xenon bulb,requiresnoexternalexhaustsystem.
ANARCSTABILIZATIONMAGNET,asrequiredbybulbmanufacturersfortheoperationof2000wattbulbs,ismountedtothebaseofthelamphousebelowthereflector.Themagnetmaybeleftinplaceforoperationof1000and1600wattbulbs.TheSOUTHpoleofthispermanentmagnetisdabbedwithpaint,andmustbepointedtowardtheleft(off-operator)sideofthelamphouse.

THELAMPHOUSEissuppliedwitha13foot(4meter)cableassemblycontainingthetwoDCleads,thegroundwire,andallACcontrolleads.Thecableassemblyisterminatedwith(2)multiplepin,keyedMSconnectorswhichmatetoreceptaclesonthelamphouseandxenonpowersupplycabinet.TheAChook-uptothexenonpowersupplyisdetailedinthepowersupplymanual;ACconnectorsmustcomplywithalllocalelectricalcodes.
THEOPTICALSYSTEMincorporatesanewly-designedlensmechanism.Spotlightopera-torsfamiliarwithearliertypeStrongspotlightsareurgedtostudythesectionfollowinginthismanualentitledOPERATIONOFTHEOPTICALSYSTEMandtopracticetheoperationoftheSuperTrouperIIpriortheirfirstperformance.Thespotsizecontrol(“trombone”)handleisdrawnbackto“spot”andpushedforwardto“flood,”whichisthereverseofearliertypeStrongopticalsystems.Thespotedgeisfocusedbyrotatingthefocusknobslocatedbehindtheboomerangontheleftandrightsidesoftheopticalsystem.
FADE-OUT,CHOPPER,ANDIRISCONTROLSarepositionedinthesameconfigurationasearlierStrongspotlights.Allopticalsystemcontrolsareaccessibleforright-orleft-handoperation.Thecolorboomerangiseasilyreversedtopositionthecolorarmsoneitherside.Operationoftheself-cancelingboomerangremainsunchanged,andstandardStrongnine-inchgelframesareused.
WHENTRANSPORTINGthespotlight,itisrecommendedthatthexenonbulbberemovedandplacedinitsoriginalshippingcartonwiththecoveronthebulbtoinsureagainstbreakage.Thebulb,aftercoolingtoroomtemperature,mayremainmountedinthelamphouseifmovingthespotlightfromonepositiontoanotherwithinthearenaorauditorium.Reasonablecareshouldbeexercised;breakagecausedbyhandlingisnotcoveredbythexenonbulbwarranty.

INSTALLATION AND SETTING UP SPOTLIGHT
THESUPERTROUPERIIisshippedinsectionswhichmustbeassembled.Liftingstrapsmountedtotheyokepivotstuds(seeFigure6,Item2)aredesignedtobeartheweightofthespotlightandbase.Thispermitsassemblingthespotlightonthefloorandlaterhoistingittoanoverheadspotlightposition.
THEFOLDINGBASEASSEMBLYisshippedcollapsed,andrequiresonlyfoldingthebaselegsdownandpinningthelegsusingthefourT-bolts(Figure6,Item17)supplied.Screwthefourlevelingfeetandlocknuts(Figure6,Item15)intothebracketsattheendofeachleg.
WHENINSTALLEDinapermanentlocation,thelevelingfeetandcastersmustberemoved,andtheholesinthebaselegbracketsusedforhardware(user-suppliedlagscrewsorbolts)tosecurethebasetothefloororplatform.Ifitisdesiredtohavetheunitportable,whenoperating,thefourlevelingfeetmustbeadjusteddownuntiltheentireweightofthespotlighthasbeenshiftedfromthecasterstothelevelingfeet.
THEINNERTUBEbelowthesupportyokeisdrilledwiththreeholestopermitadjustingtheheightofthespotlight.Thethreeholesareonfour-inchcentersandwillallowanopticalheightofap-proximately53inches,57inches,and61inchesabovefloorleveltotheopticalcenterofthelamphouseandlenssystem.Inserttheheightlocationpinthroughtheholeintheoutertubeofthebasecolumnandoneoftheholesintheinnertube.Thelevelingfeetmaybeadjustedthroughanadditionaltwo-inchrange.
THEHORIZONTALPANandverticaltiltlockingknobsareontherighthand(fromrear)sideoftheyokeassembly.TheyokesaddleismarkedtoindicateFRONT.Tightenbothoftheselockingdevicessecurelybeforeattemptingtoplacethespotlighthead(lamphouseandlenssystem)onthesupportyoke.
PLACETHELAMPHOUSEandlenssystemontheyokeassembly,withthenormaloperator’ssideofthelamphouse(witharcviewingport)totherightsideoftheyokesaddle,thesameastheyokelockingcontrols.Lineupthefourmountingholesinthebottomplateofthesupportbracewiththefourslottedholesinthesaddleoftheyokeassembly.Secureusingthefour5-16/18wingheadscrewsandflatwashers.Aftermountingthecolorboomerang(seebelow),loosenthetiltlockandtestthespotlightbalanceatthedesiredprojectionangle.Loosenthe(4)wingheadscrewsandslidethespotlightheadforwardandbackintheslottedholesintheyokesaddletoachieveoptimiumbalancebeforefinallysecuringthewingheadscrews.
MOUNTTHECOLORBOOMERANGtothefrontoftheopticalsystemwiththecolorarmsfacingthedesiredoperatingside.Removethe(3)screwsfromthemountingstudsonthefrontoftheopticalsystemhousing.Alignthethreeholesintheboomeranghousingtothethreemountingstuds;openthehingedfrontcovertoaccessthemountingholesandsecuretheboomerangtothestudsusingthe(3)screws.
ATTACHTHELAMPHOUSECABLECONNECTORSto themating receptacleson thelamphouseandpowersupply.Thelamphouseandpowersupplyconnectorsarekeyedforcorrectpinalign-ment;makecertainpinsareseatedbeforetighteningthelockingring.DONOTenergizethexenonpowersupplybeforethexenonbulbiscorrectlyinstalledintothelamphouse.
THESUPERTROUPERIIiswiredforoperationwiththe“compact”modelStrongxenonpowersupplyEquipmentType62000xx.IfinstallingtheSuperTrouperIIwithanoldermodelortypeStrongxenonpowersupply,agroundwiremustbeconnectedtothepowersupply’sMSconnectorPinM.OperationoftheSuperTrouperIIwithaxenonpowersupplyotherthanaStrong62-serieswillvoidULcompliance.

SAFETY PROCEDURES
THEXENONBULBishighlypressurized.Whenignited,thenormaloperatingtemperatureofthebulbincreasesthepressuretoalevelatwhichthebulbmayexplodeifnothandledinstrictaccordancetothemanufacturer’soperatinginstructions.Thebulbisstableatroomtemperature,butmaystillexplodeifdroppedorotherwisemishandled.
REFER ALL BULBREPLACEMENTand service toQUALIFIEDPERSONNELwithadequateprotectiveclothing(faceshield,cleancottongloves,welder’sjacket).Forroutinelamphouseservice,observethefollowingrules:
1. Allowthebulbtocooltoroomtemperaturebeforeopeningthelamphouse.Putonprotectiveclothingdescribedabove.
2. De-energizethexenonpowersupplyattheACsourcebeforeopeningthelamphousecompartment.3. Whenpossible,encasethebulbinitsprotectivecoverwhencleaningorservicingthelamphouse
interior.Thebulb,whenoutsidethelamphouse,mustbeencasedinthecover.4. Cleanthebulbafterithascooledtoroomtemperature.Donottouchthequartzenvelopeofthebulb;
fingerprintswillburninandcreatehotspotswhichmayshortenbulblife.Iffingermarksaremade,theyshouldbecarefullyremovedwithmethylalcoholandcottonpriortobulboperation.
5. Neverviewanignitedbulbdirectly.BLINDNESSORPERMANENTEYEDAMAGEMAYBEINCURRED.
6. UseonlyxenonbulbsdesignatedasOZONEFREE.Whenpossible,ventthelamphouseexhausttooutsideatmosphere.
7. Maintain the lamphouseblowers in goodoperating condition. Keep theblower inlets clean forunrestrictedairflow.
8. Toinsuremaximumbulblife,operatethelamphouseblowersforat leasttenminutesafterextinguish-ingthebulb.
9. Ifreturningabulbforwarrantyadjustment,packitinitsoriginalshippingcontainer.Completeandreturnallrequiredwarrantyinformation.
10. Disposeofexpiredbulbsthatarebeyondwarrantyinthefollowingmanner:Wrapthebulbtightlyinseverallayersofcanvasorheavycloth.Placeitonahardsurfaceandshattertheenvelopewithasharphammerblow.DONOTplaceanunshatteredbulbinanordinaryrefusecontainer.
11. DONOTPERMITUNAUTHORIZEDPERSONNELTOPERFORMORATTEMPTANYPHASEOFXENONBULBHANDLINGORSERVICE.

BULB INSTALLATION
CAUTION:OBSERVEALLSAFETYPROCEDURES.Putonprotectivefacemask.Wearcleancottonglovestopreventmarkingthequartzenvelopeofthebulbwithfingerprints.TurnthecircuitbreakeronthesideofthexenonpowersupplycabinetOFF.
DISMOUNTTHELAMPHOUSEACCESSCOVERby removing the twophillips headscrewsandlockwashers;(1)attherearbulkheadand(1)atthefrontbulkhead.Openthekeylockafterfirstremovingthehexheadsecurityscrew.Do not misplace the security screw.
THESUPERTROUPERIISYSTEMisshippedfromthefactorywithacompatiblexenonpowersupply.Thedesiredbulbwattageanddesiredinputvoltageofthespotlightsystemshippedisspecifiedbythecustomerwhenplacingtheoriginalequipmentorder.Threewattagesareavailable:1000,1600,or2000watt.The115V.ACxenonpowersupply(62-80114or6200084)iscapableofoperating1000and1600wattbulbsthroughouttheirspecifiedcurrentranges,andthe220V.ACsupply(62-80106,62-80113,6200002,6200014)operatesallthreeavailablewattages.BulbsapprovedbyStrongEntertainmentLightingforuseintheSuperTrouperIIinclude:

THEABOVEXENONBULBSaredesignatedOZONEFREE,andreplacementbulbsotherthantheabovemustbecertifiedbytheirmanufacturerasbeing100%interchangeable.ThewarrantyonthexenonbulbsuppliedisadministeredbythebulbmanufacturerandisseparatefromthespotlightwarrantyissuedbyStrong.Retainthewarrantydocumentationpackedwiththexenonbulb.
WHENORDEREDfor1000or1600wattoperation,theadaptersrequiredtoinstallthesesmallerbulbsintheSuperTrouperIIlamphousearesuppliedintheaccessorykit.Thefrontbulbsupportinthe1000and1600wattlamphousesisacastyoke(65117000)whichholdsthestemofthecathodeadapter.Aretainerplate(65151000)andtwothumbscrews(65152000)clampthestemofthecathodeadapterintotheyoke.
THE2000WATTtype“HS”bulbmountsintothelamphousewithoutadapters.Thefrontbulbsupportforthe2000wattbulb(83747000)isacushionedringwhichencirclesthecathode(-)endcapofthebulb.Thenegativecontact(24269000)clampseitherontheendofthe1000/1600wattcathodeadapter(asshownonfollowingpage)ormountsdirectlytothe.312"(8mm)cathodepinofthe2kW“HS”bulb.Atriggerwire,encirclingthebulbenvelopeandattachedtotheendcap(asillustratedonthefacingpage),mustbepresent.
IFITISDECIDEDsubsequenttotheinitialinstallationtochangebulbwattages,itisnec-essarytoverifythattheoriginalxenonpowersupplywilloperatethereplacementbulbthroughoutitsrange.The115voltpowersupplyisnotrecommendedforusewitha2000wattbulb,andshouldbereplacedwitha220volt,Type6200091unit.Makecertainthatthecorrectfrontbulbsupportisinstalled;65117000Yokefor1000and1600watt,or83747000RingSupportfor2000watt.Therearbulbsupportcollet(24266000)accommodateseithertheanodepinofthe2000watt“HS”bulborthestemoftheanodeadapter.

ASSEMBLETHEREQUIREDADAPTERStothe1000or1600wattbulbasillustratedpriortoinsertingthebulbintothelamphouse.Beverycarefulnottoapplyanymechanicalstraintothequartzenvelopewheninstallingadapters.Notethe(2)differentanodeadapters;thelongeranodeadapter(24271000)isforthe1000wattHanoviaXH1000HSbulbonly.
SCREWTHECHROMED,THREADEDCATHODEADAPTER(24270000)ontothebulbstudsoitseatsfirmlyagainsttheshoulderofthecathode(-)endcap.Slipthecorrectbrassanodeadapterwithsetscrewoverthestudofthepositiveendcapincontactwiththeshoulderoftheanode(+)endcap.Tightenallthreadedfastenerssecurelytoinsurefirmmechanicalfitandgoodelectricalconduction.
LOOSENTHETHUMBSCREWSonthetopofthefrontbulbsupportyokeandswingtheretainerplateclearoftheyoke.Slidethecontactclampoftheigniterleadoverthebrasssocketoftherearbulbsupportcollet.
REMOVETHEPLASTICPROTECTIVECOVERfromthebulbafterputtingonthefaceshield.DO NOTtouchtheclearquartzenvelopeofthebulbwithbarefingers.Naturalskinoilswillrapidlyburnintothequartzandshortenbulblife.Thexenonbulbwarrantydoesnotcoverdamageofthisnature.Ifthequartzisaccidentallyfingermarked,thoroughlyremovethefingerprintswithisopropylalcoholbeforeignitingthebulb.
INSERTTHEBULBintothelamphouse,betweenthereflectorsupportandthefrontofthelamphouse.Passtheanode(+)endofthebulbintothereflectorandthroughthecenterholeofthereflector.Takecarenottotouchorscratchthesurfaceofthereflector.
INSERTTHEANODEADAPTERSTEMintotherearsupportcollet. Thestemmustbeinsertedasfarintothesocketaspossibletoinsuregoodconductionandtopermitfullfocustravelofthebulb.Placethecathodeadapterstemintothebulbsupportyoke,pivottheretainingplatetoitsclosedposition,andtightenboththumbscrews.Usinga9/64"allenwrench,firmlytightenthesocketheadclampingscrewinthepositive(+)contacttoinsureagoodelectricalcontact.
INSTALLTHENEGATIVE(-)LEADCONTACTCLAMPovertheendofthecathodeadapter.Slidethecontactuptoseatitsshoulderfirmlyagainstthetipofthecathodeadapter.Dressthenegativeleaddirectlyinfrontofthebulbsupportyoketominimizetheshadow.Tightenthesocketheadclampingscrewsecurelyusinga9/64"allenwrench.

REMOVETHEPLASTICPROTECTIVECOVERfromthexenonbulbonlyifnecessary.Slidethecontactclampoftheigniterleadoverthebrasssocketoftherearbulbsupportcollet.Ifthebulbissuppliedbythemanufacturerwithananodeleadattached,cutofforotherwiseremovethefactory-installedanodelead.Removeanyfingermarksfromthebulbenvelopewithalcohol.
INSERTTHE2000WATTBULBintothelamphouse,passingtheanode(+)endthroughtheholeinthereflector.Handlethebulbbythemetalendcapsonly.Passtheanodepinasfaraspossibletotherearofthelamphousetoallowclearancebetweenthecathode(-)pinandthefrontbulbsupport.Takecarenottotouchorscratchthesurfaceofthereflector;donottouchthequartzenvelopeofthebulb.Slidethecathode(-)endcapthroughthespring-cushionedringofthebulbshockmount.

NOTETHETWONOTCHESatthecenterholeofthereflector.Thesenotchesallowaddi-tionalclearancebetweenthegroundedreflectorandtheenergizedbulbtriggerwire.Rotatethebulbtoalignthetriggerwirewithoneofthesetwonotchestopreventthetriggerwirefromarcingtothegroundedreflector.
INSERTTHEANODE(+)PINof thebulb into therearsupportcollet. Thepinmustbeinsertedasfarintothesocketaspossibletoinsuregoodconductionandpermitfullfocustravelofthebulb.Makecertainthebulb’striggerwireisalignedtothecenterofeitherreflectornotch,andfirmlytightenthesocketheadclampingscrew.Slidethenegativecontactclampoverthecathode(-)pinanddressthenegativeleaddirectlyinfrontofthefrontbulbsupporttominimizetheshadow.Securelytightenthenegativeclamp.
ANALTERNATEMETHODofinstallingthe2000wattbulbistodismounttheshockmountringandcushionspringfromthefrontbulbsupportassemblybyremovingthesocketheadscrew.Slidetheringoverthecathode(-)endcapofthebulb,andinstallthebulbbyinsertingtheanode(+)endcapthroughthereflectorcenterholeandseatingtheanodepinintotherearsupportcollet.Re-mounttheringtothebasebracketofthefrontbulbsupportusingthesocketheadscrew.Securetheanode(+)clampingscrew;installandtightenthecathode(-)contactclamp.
THESOCKETHEADSCREWwhichmountsthebulbsupportringtoitssupportbracketmustbetightenedsecurelyenoughtoclamptheuprightbulbsupportringinavertical(90°)positionandpreventitstiltingforwardorbackasthebulbisfocused.Theendcapofthebulbshouldtouchonlythecoilsoftheshockmountspringtoallowthebulbtoslideforwardandbackwithaminimumoffrictionandno stressontheenvelope.

INSERTTHESTRIPHEATFILTERintothebracketinfrontofthexenonbulb.Thisfilterisanarrowglassstripthatcoversonlythecenterportionofthebeam.Onesurfaceoftheglassiscoated,andmarked“XX”and/orimprinted“ThisSurfaceTowardBulb.”Thecoatedglasssurfacemustfacethebulbordamagingradiantheatenergywillbetransmittedtotheopticalsystem.DONOToperatethespotlightwiththeglassstripheatfiltermissingorreversed.
CHECKTHEARCSTABILIZATIONMAGNETmountedtoan“L”bracketbelowthereflec-tor.TheSOUTHpoleofthemagnetismarkedwithpaint,andshouldbepointedtowardtheoff-operatorsideofthelamphouse(leftside,asviewedfromrear).Ifthemagnetisreversed,thearcwillburnhighonthefaceoftheanodeelectrode,creatingseverelightflickerandcausingignitionproblems.Thismagnetisrequiredfor2000wattoperation,andisinnowaydetrimentaltotheoperationof1000and1600wattbulbs.
REMOVETHEPLASTICCOVERfromthexenonbulb.Do notignitethelampwiththecoveronthebulb.Retaintheplasticcoverandstoreinasecurelocationatornearthespotlight.
REPLACETHELAMPHOUSECOVER.Replaceandtightenall(3)phillipsheadretainingscrewsandwashers.Securethekeylockandinstallthesecurityscrew.Thelamphousecovermustbecor-rectlyinstalledandsecuredtoclosethecoverinterlockswitchesandenablebulbignitionandoperation.

SEETHEPRECEDING“BULBINSTALLATION”SECTIONforinstructionsdetailingtheabove.Failuretoremovetheplasticbulbcoverwilldamageordestroythexenonbulb.Amissingorreversedheatfilterwillallowradiantheatdamagetotheopticalmechanismandlenssystem.Thelamphousecovermustbeinstalledcorrectlyandsecuredtoactuateallinterlockswitchesandpermitlampignition.
ENERGIZETHEXENONPOWERSUPPLYbyswitchingthecircuitbreakeronthesidepanelON.TheVINlightadjacenttothecircuitbreakerwillglow,indicatingthatthepowersupplyisreadyforoperation.Thelamphouseblowerswillstartandinitiatebulbcooling.Thelampblowerswilloperatecontinuouslyuntilthexenonpowersupplyisde-energized.
PLACETHELAMPSWITCHintheONpositionandthebulbwill ignite. Allowafewminutesforthecurrenttostabilize,andreadthelamphouseammeter.Thebulbmustbeoperatedwithinthecurrentrangespecifiedbythebulbmanufacturer.Therangesforthexenonbulbusedareasfollow:

LOOSENTHETWOTHUMBSCREWStotheleftandrightofthefocuscontroljustenoughtopermitmanualmotionofcompletecontrolassembly.Movethecontrolassemblyaroundthetwothumbscrewsandobservethemovementofthebrighter“hot”areawithintheprojectedspot.
MOVETHECONTROLASSEMBLYaroundthethumbscrewsuntilthebrightestportionofthe“hot”areaisat,orslightlyabove,thecenteroftheprojectedspot.Ifneeded,thefrontbulbsupportismountedonslottedholesandmayalsobeadjustedtoachievethedesiredspotimage.Itmaybenecessarytoagainrotatethebulbfocuscontroltoclearlydefineandidentifythe“hot”spot.Positioningthebrightestlightabovethecenterofthespothighlightstheheadandshouldersofaliveperformer.Thiseffectisparticularlydesirablefortelevisionandvideotaping.

AFTERTHE“HOT”SPOTiscorrectlypositioned,tightenthetwothumbscrewstolockthisadjustmentinplace.Toverifythatthebulbisattheopticalcenterline,turnthefocuscontrolclockwisetoagainprojectSpot“A.”Thedarkspotshouldremaincenteredinthespotprojectionasshown.
ROTATETHEBULBFOCUSCONTROL(centersection)toobtainthebrightestlightwitheven,flatlightdistribution(Spot“B”).Tosharpentheedgeofthespot,rotatethespotfinefocuscontrol(largeknurledknob)locatedimmediatelybehindthecolorboomerang. ASECONDMETHODofaligningthexenonbulbistoprojectthespottothestage,andusingthebulbadjustmentcontrols,obtaina“hot”spotintheprojectedspot.Centerthis“hot”spotintheprojectedspotbymovingtheentirecontrolsectionaroundthetwothumbscrews.Oncethe“hot”spotiscentered,orslightlyabovecenterintheprojectedspot,locktheadjustmentcontrolinpositionwiththetwothumbscrewsandrotatethefocuscontrol(centersection)toobtainabrightspotwithanevendistributionoflight.Tosharpentheedgeofthespot,rotatetheknurledfocuscontrolknoblocatedoneithersideofthelensmechanism.
THISBULBPOSITIONINGADJUSTMENTshouldnotbedisturbeduntilthexenonbulbiseitherrotatedorreplaced.Atthistimeitwillbenecessarytorepeattheabovebulbalignmentprocedure.
REPLACETHEREARCOVERPLATEoverthebulbadjustmentcontrolmechanism.Secureinplacewiththe(3)phillipsheadscrewsandfinishwashers.
BECAUSEOFMANUFACTURINGTOLERANCESandnormalbulbaging,itmaybeneces-sarytooperateonelampatslightlyhigherorlowercurrentthanotherstoobtainequallightbalancebetweentwoormorespotlights.Thesecurrentadjustmentsaremadeatthexenonpowersupply.
TOEXTINGUISHTHEARC,placetheLAMPswitchintheOFFposition.Theblowersinthelamphousewillcontinuerunninguntilthexenonpowersupplyisde-energized.Allowtheblowerstooperateandcoolthebulbforat leasttenminutesafterextinguishing.Thismeasureisrequiredtocomplywiththebulbmanufacturer’swarrantyconditions.
TOPROLONGBULBLIFE,andtoencouragerapidbulbstarts,itisrecommendedtodouseoutusingthechoppersorthefade-outbladesratherthanextinguishingthebulbduring“dark”periodsbetweencues.Multipleignitionpulsesand“warm”re-startsconsumemorepowerandcausemorebulbelectrodewearthansustainedoperation.Whilerepeatedignitionsarefrequentlyunavoidable,andwithindesignparameters,a(20)minutedelaybetweenignitionsisdesirable.
COMPLYWITHTHEBULBMANUFACTURER’SINSTRUCTIONSregardingrotationofthexenonbulbatspecifiedintervals.Torotatethebulb,loosenboththepositiveandnegativeclamps.Grasp-ingthemetalendcaps,rotatethebulb180°andalignthetriggerwiretotheoppositereflectornotch.Securelyre-tightenbothclamps.AdjustthexenonpowersupplytoincreasetheDCcurrenttoasettingatorjustbelowthemaximumlevelspecifiedforthebulb.Projectawhitespottocheckforanevenfield;correctthebulbpositioningasrequired.Operatethexenonbulbatthishighercurrentlevelforoneortwoperformances,andthenreturnthepowersupplysettingtoitspreviouslevel.Thistemporaryoperationofthexenonbulbathighcurrentfollowingbulbrotationwillrestorethecathodetipandenhanceignitionatthenewarcposition.

THESUPERTROUPERIIcanbeoperatedfromeitherside.Generally,thebestpositionfortheoperatortostandisnearthecenterofthespotlight,ontherighthandside.Theangleoftiltandthesizeorlocationoftheportholemayalterthepositionforthemostconvenientoperation.Eachoperatorwill,afterafewminutesofoperation,generallydevelophisorherownsystemandpositionforoperatingtheunit.
POSITIONTHECOLORBOOMERANGwiththecolorarmsfacingthedesiredoperatingside.Theboomeranghousingcanbereversedbyremovingthethreemountingscrews,removingandreversingtheboomerang,andre-mountusingthe(3)mountingholesontheoppositesideofthehousing.Itisadvisabletocheckthesequenceofcolorfiltersandtoplacethemoredensecolors(red,green)inthefrontpositionsoftheboomerang(furthestawayfromthearc).SeethefollowingOPERATIONOFTHECOLORBOOMERANGsectionfordetailedinstructions.
THEHORIZONTALPANandverticaltilttensionadjustmentleversarelocatedontheyokeassembly.Eachcanbeseparatelysettogivethedesireddegreeoffrictiononspotlightswing,fromcompletereleasetototallock-down,tosuitthespotlight’sapplicationandtheindividualoperator.
THELENSSYSTEM“ZOOM”BRAKE,whichcontrolsthedegreeofforcerequiredtoslidethespotsizecontrolhandle(“trombone”),islocatedontheoutriderofthemovableprojectionlenscarriage.Alternatelytighteningorlooseningthenylonbraketensionscrewwillincreaseordecreasetheforcerequiredtooperatethespotsizecontrolhandle.Requirementsmayvary,andthebrakingcanbeadjustedtobothac-commodatetheangleoftiltandtosuittheindividualoperator.SeethefollowingOPERATIONOFOPTICALSYSTEMsectionfordetailsregardingaccessingandsettingthefrictionbrake.

OPERATION OF OPTICAL SYSTEM
THEIRISCONTROListhefrontleverwhichprojectsthroughtheslotsonthetopoftheopticalsystemhousing.Whenthisleveristotheleft(asviewedfromtherearoftheunit),thelargestapertureisprovided.Smalleraperturesareobtainedastheleverismovedtotheright.
THESPOTSIZECONTROLHANDLES(“Trombone”)arelocatedontherightandleftsidesoftheopticalsystemjustabovethebaserail.Avariationofspotsizesfromfullfloodtosmallspotcanbeobtainedbymovingthespotsizecontrolhandlefromoneextremetotheother.Beamintensityisincreasedbythisopticalsystemwhenreducingfromfloodtospot,andmaximumintensityisreachedwhenthetrombonehandleisintheextremerearposition.
THEMAXIMUMFLOODSPOTisobtainedwiththeiriscontrollevertotheleft(awayfromthenormaloperatingside)forthelargestapertureandwiththetrombonehandlemovedasfarforwardaspossible.
SMALLERSIZEDSPOTSareprojectedasthetrombonehandleispulledback.Mostofthespotsizesneededwillbeproducedwiththeirisinitsmaximumopenposition.A“diffused”spot(reducedintensitywithasoftedge)isprojectedbymovingthetrombonehandleforwardtoward“flood”whileclosingtheiriscontrol.
TOADJUSTthedegreeof forcerequiredtoslidethespotsizecontrolhandle, thenylonbrakescrewintheoutrideroftheprojectionlenscarriagemustbeloosenedortightened.Thelensmechanismhousing(seeFigure3,Item27)mustbedismountedtoperformthisadjustment.
TIGHTENTHEYOKETILTLOCKanddismountthecolorboomerang.Removethe(2)spotsizecontrolhandlesandthe(2)focusknobs.Theseitemsaremountedusingsocketheadscrewswhichcanberemovedusinga3/16"allenwrench.Unscrewthe(3)plasticknobsfromtheopticalsystemcontrollevers.Removethe(6)phillipsheadscrewsretainingthelensmechanismhousing.Liftthehousingfromthespotlight,slightlyspreadingthebottomofthecovertocleartheprotrudingshafts.
THEFRICTIONBRAKEisahexheadnylonscrew(seeFigure3,Item4)whichbearsagainstthesliderod. Tighteningthescrewapplies tensionandlooseningthescrewrelievestension. Aspotlightoperatedatanextremedownanglewillrequiremorebraketensionthanoneoperatedatamorelevelangle.Furthermore,thepreferreddegreeoftensionmayvarybetweenindividualoperators.Securethelocknutaftersettingthedesiredbraketension;re-installthelensmechanismhousingandthecolorboomerang.
THEEDGEOFTHEPROJECTEDSPOTisfocusedbyrotatingthefocuscontrolknob.Thisfocuscontrolalterstherelativedistancebetweenthelensestoadjusttheopticalsystemfordifferinglengthsofthrow.Thedegreeoftorquerequiredtorotatethefocuscontrolisadjustablebytighteningorlooseningthefrictionscrews(Figure4,Item17)ontheoff-operatorsideofthefocusmechanism.Whenmakingafocusad-justment,observethespotandrotatethefocusknobuntilthesharpestedgeontheprojectedspotisobtained.
FORA“HEAD”SPOT,oranyspotsmallerthancanbeobtainedwiththetrombonehandleinitsextremerearposition,shifttheiriscontrollevertotheright(towardoperatingside)forasmalleraperture.Theiriscontrollevershouldalwaysbereturnedtoitsextremeleft(open)positionbeforethespotsizecontrol(trombone)handleisagainmovedforwardtoobtainlargerspots.

THEMASKINGSHUTTER(chopper)leveristhemiddleleverprojectingthroughthetopoftheopticalsystemhousing.Themaskingshutterbladesareoperatedbythislevertoshapetheprojectedspottoarectangle,stripspot,ordousingouttofullcutoff.Thedisengaged(fullopen)positionofthemaskingshutterleveristotheextremeright(viewedfromrear).Varyingdegreesofmaskingtocompletecutoffareobtainedbymovingthelevertotheleft.
THEANGLEofthemaskingshutterbladesclosureisadjustableandcanbesettocompensateforanoffsethorizontalprojectionangle,forexample,ifthespotlightispositionedtotheleftorrightofcenterstage.Anunbalancedconditionwillexistwhileadjustingtheblades;lockdownthespotlighttiltclampbeforepreceding.
REMOVETHECOLORBOOMERANGandlensmechanismhousingasinstructedontheprecedingpage.Loosentheslottedheadscrewsholdingeachofthemaskingshutterbladesenoughtoallowadjustments.Ignitethebulbandprojectaspot.Adjusttheangleofthebottombladebytappingitwithascrewdriversoitsprojectededgeliesparalleltothefootlights.Tightenthescrew.Operatethemaskingshutterlevertoclosetheblades.Adjusttheupperbladetocloseagainstthebottomblade,andtightenthescrew.
THEFADE-OUTMECHANISMANDDOUSERCONTROLis the rear leverprojectingthroughthetopoftheopticalsystemcover.Thislevercontrolstheintensityoflightfromcompletefade-out(douse)whentheleveristotheleft,tofullintensitywhentheleveristotheright.
ROTATINGTHELARGEKNURLEDKNOBSlocatedon thesidesof theopticalsystemimmediatelybehindtheboomerangadjuststhefinefocusofthelensesandsharpenstheedgeofthespot.Itmaybenecessarytore-focustheedgeofthespotafterzoomingfromfloodtosmallspot,andfromspottoflood.

TOOPERATEINDIVIDUALCOLORFILTERS,lowerthedesiredfilterselectorlever.Arockercatchlocatedinthecolordischousingholdsthefilterinposition.Toreleaseacolor,pushthefilterreleasearminorengageanothercolor,thusreleasingthepreviouscolorautomatically.
TOREPLACEFILTERHOLDERS,openthefrontcoverofthecolordischousingbyremov-ingthethumbscrewonthetopofthehousing.Theupperportionofthehousingishingedtoallowaccesstothecolorholders.Slidethefilterholdersupandoffthecolorarms.Replacegelframesasrequiredandsecurethefrontcoverofthedischousingcoverwhenfinished.

THESUPERTROUPERIISPOTLIGHTSYSTEMrequiresverylittlemaintenancetokeepitingoodworkingorder.Routinecleaningisgenerallysufficient.
THEREFLECTORandtheheatfiltershouldbecleanedperiodicallywithaclean,soft,lintfreeclothtoremoveanydustfromthecoatedsurfaces.Ifexcessivelysoiled,useacommercialliquidglasscleaner(i.e.Windex®).Do notuseBonAmi®orotherabrasivecleaners.
THEXENONBULBshouldbecheckedoccasionallyforpresenceofanyforeignmaterialontheenvelope.Anydirtorotherforeignmaterialwillrapidlyburnintothequartzmaterialandpossiblyshortenbulblife.Useisopropylalcoholandaclean,lint-freecottonclothtoremovedirt,fingermarks,andothercontaminants.CAUTION:Observeallsafetyprocedureswhenworkingaroundtheexposedbulb.
CHECKALLELECTRICALTERMINATIONSperiodicallyfortightness.NoteespeciallythexenonbulbconnectionsandotherleadsintheDCcircuit.AllconnectionstotheMSreceptacleonthexenonpowersupplyareaccessiblebelowthesmallpaneladjacenttothereceptacle.
THEINSIDEOFTHELAMPHOUSECOMPARTMENTandthelamphousecoverlouversshouldbecleanedperiodically,dependingonthedustconditionsateachinstallation.Theblowerairinletsinthebottompanelmayrequirecleaningtoremovedustbuild-upwhichaccumulatesoveraperiodoftime.Ifdustbuild-upimpedestheblowerimpellors,orifobstructedairflowallowsthesquirrelcageblowermotortooverheat,athermalswitchintheblowermotorwillshutdowntheblower.Ifthesquirrelcageblowershutsdownrepeatedly,itisnecessarytodismountitfromthespotlightbaserailforathoroughcleaning.Vacuumorblowoutthe(2)impellorsandlubricatetheblowermotorinthemarkedoilholes.Thesix-inchboxfanattherearofthelamphouserequiresnolubrication.
THEOPTICALSYSTEMLENSESmustbekeptcleantopreventanylightreductionintheprojectedspot.Togainaccesstothelenses,tightenthehorizontalpanandverticaltiltlockingclamps,andremovethecolorboomerangandopticalsystemhousing.
CLEANTHEOPTICALSYSTEMLENSESusing lint-free lens tissueswithanycleanerapprovedforuseoncoatedprojectionlenses.Iftheprojectionlensassemblyisremovedfromitsbarrelforcleaning,replacethelenswiththearrow(engravedonthelensbarrel)pointingtowardtheiris.
WHENTRANSPORTINGthespotlightfromonevenuetoanother,itisrecommendedthatthexenonbulbberemovedandplacedinitsoriginalshippingcartonwiththecoverontoinsureagainstbreak-age.Ifthespotlightismovedfromonepositiontoanotherwithinthesamevenue,theunitmaybetransportedwiththebulbinstalled,assumingreasonablecareisexercised.DO NOTmovethespotlightuntilthebulbhascooledtoroomtemperature.

NORMALOPERATION
WHENTHESAFETYSWITCHinthemainACsupplylinetothexenonpowersupplyisintheONposition,andthe30amperecircuitbreakerontheswitchingpowersupplyisON,thegreenVIN(“voltageinput”)lightonthexenonpowersupplywillglow.Theblowersinboththelamphouseandthexenonpowersupplywillstart.ThePWRandAIRindicatorlightsonthespotlightlamphousecontrolpanelwillglow.
OPERATIONOFTHELAMPHOUSEBLOWERSwillmaintainnormaltemperatureinthelamphouse.Ifthelamphousetopcoveriscorrectlyinstalledandlocked,the(4)coverinterlockswitchclosureswillcompletethecontrolcircuittotheLAMPswitch,andthelamphousePANELSlightwillglow.
WHENTHE“LAMP”SWITCHisplacedintheONposition,the115V.ACcontrolcircuit(wires5&6)inthelamphousewillenergizethepowersupplycircuitryprovidingDCcurrenttotheigniterandbulb.ThegreenGOindicatorlightonthexenonpowersupplywillglow,aswilltheLAMPlightonthelamphousecontrolpanel.Thepowersupplywillthendeliverhighopencircuit(approximately180-200V.DC“noload”)voltagetothelamphouse.ThishighDCvoltagewillactuatetheDCPulseIgniter.
THEREWILLBEadistinctlyaudiblehighvoltagearc“ping”attheignitersparkgapandacrossthebulbelectrodes.ThebulbshouldigniteimmediatelyafteroneortwoofthesehighRFvoltagepulses.Oncebulbignitionissustained,thelampcurrentwilladjusttotheoutputsettingofthexenonpowersupply.TheDCvoltagewillfalltothexenonbulb’ssustainingvoltagelevel(30V.DCorless),andtheDCPulseIgniterwillceasegeneratingtheRFpulse.
MULTIPLEIGNITIONPULSESpriortobulbignitionusuallyindicatealowDCoutputsetting.AdjustlamphouseDCcurrentaccordingtotheINSTALLATION-OPERATIONsectionoftheXenonPowerSupplymanualtothecorrectlevelspecifiedbythebulbmanufacturer.Operatingaxenonbulbbelowitsratedcurrentwillnotprolongbulblife;sustainedoperationbelowratedcurrentwillcauseignitionproblemsasthebulbages.A“warm”oragedxenonbulbmightrequiremultiplestrikes.Ashortdelaybetweenignitionpulsesisnormal.Thecapacitorsinthexenonpowersupplymustre-chargebetweeneachhighvoltage“noload”discharge.
THEDCPULSEIGNITERwillremainoutofcircuitwhilethexenonbulbisoperatingnor-mally.NofurtherignitionpulseswillbegenerateduntilthexenonpowersupplyagaindeliversopencircuitDCvoltageinexcessof140V.DC.
ELAPSEDHOURSwillbegincountingupwhenthexenonbulbsustainsignition.Afaultyhourmeterwillnotpreventbulbignition.Recordthemeterreadingwhenfirstusinganewbulb;thehourmeterisnotresettable,soaccuratefiguresshouldbeusedwhenenteringbulbhourstomaintainapermanentrecordofthespotlightsystemperformance.

“PWR” Whenlit,ACpowerissuppliedtothelamphouse,andthelamphouseblowerswilloperate.
“LAMP” Thisindicatorlightsonlywhenthecontrolcircuitiscomplete,meaningallaccesscoversareclosedandlocked,andthebulbsealblowersareoperatingandsupplyingadequateairflowacrossthexenonbulb.ThislightalsoindicatesthatthexenonpowersupplyisenergizedandDCcurrentisappliedtothexenonbulb.
“AIR” ThisL.E.D.lightsconcurrentlywiththe“PWR”indicator.
“PANELS”The(3)magneticcoverinterlockswitches,twoatthelowerlamphousesidecoverpanelsandoneatthetopcover,plusthepushbuttonswitchatthedoorlock,mustbeclosedtoactuatethislight.Thesecurityscrewsecuringthekeylockmustbeinstalledtoinsureswitchclosure.
THE“PWR,” “AIR,”and“COVERS”indicatorsonthecontrolpanelmustallbelightedtoindicatethatconditionsarecorrectforignitionofthexenonbulb.TheMAINLINEcircuitbreakermustbeintheONposition.The“LAMP”indicatorlightsonlywhenthecircuitforbulbignitioniscomplete.
BEFOREPRECEDINGwith the followingTroubleChart, checkfirst that thegreenVINindicatorlightonthexenonpowersupplyisglowing,showingthatACpowerispresent.ThePWRandAIRindicatorson the lamphousecontrolpanel shouldalsobe lighted, showingcorrectcontinuity through thelamphouse/powersupplyinterconnectcable.
ALLOWTHEXENONBULBtothoroughlycooltoroomtemperaturebeforeopeningthelamp-houseenclosure,andallowcapacitorstodrainstoredenergy.Thelamphousecontrolcircuitoperateson120V.AC;exercise extreme caution when taking voltage measurements in a power ON condition.MeasurexenonpowersupplyvoltagesattheMSconnector;therearenotestpointsonprimaryorsecondaryPCboardsections.
THEDCPULSEIGNITERincludesaredesignedsparkgapwhichpermitsadegreeofadjust-ment.Removetheignitercasecoveranddraintheignitercapacitorsbyusingthebladeofaninsulatedhandlescrewdrivertoshortacrossthetwosparkgapscrewsbeforeperforminganyadjustmentsinsidetheignitercase.
EXCHANGEOFCOMPONENTS(i.e.bulbs,igniters,powersupplies)betweensimilarStrongSuperTrouperII’stoaidindiagnosisofaproblemisencouraged.Thiswillnotleadtoequipmentdamage,andwillnotvoidequipmentwarranty.
