Love your beach protectthe Edge, reads a decal

that adorns the kitchenentrance o the Folly Beach Crab Shack.

Most islanders would agree. Tis is thesentiment that intertwines the various

walks o lie that occupy (pun intended)this heady strip o a barrier island that

    protects the Charleston Peninsula. Te

issue o trash dispensation and litter strikeshigh levels o emotional involvement or

islanders. Ater the inamous beachtrashing on the Fourth o July in 2009,

there has been an obvious increase in

littering awareness, volunteer cleanups, and overall concern.

    Since Charleston County recently

expanded their all in one recycling

    eort to Folly (where

    glass, plastics, paper,

aluminum, and otherrecyclables can now be

placed together into largetrash-can sized bins),

the recycling eort hasbecome more visible to

the public. Te Countyprovides these cans, and

    in turn ollows through

    with collection servicesevery other Wednesday.

    Te program also

now allows businessesto participate, i theyare located along a

residential route. Furthermore, thosethat demonstrate a need

or more requent pickupcan now request service

    every Wednesday, instead

    o ollowing the biweeklyresidential schedule.

Although businesses areentering the slower months,

the recycling eort is noless important o an issue.

In an eort to discoverexactly who is doing what

in the arena o recycling,Te Folly Current went

    door-to-door down Center

    Street.

Te results o this survey were not

surprising. A majority o Center Streetbusinesses, primarily restaurants and bars,

eel very strongly about recycling. Someeven opt to pay or the eort themselves

out o pocket. With Charleston Countysnew program in eect, costs have been

cut or businesses that during the colder

months may otherwise not be able toaord any extra expenses.

Jody Hawkins and his wie ownthe Grill on the Edge, one o the frst

    restaurants encountered upon enteringthe beach.

We have the smaller blue bins insidebehind the bar and near the servers

    station, which we ultimately transer

to the County roll bins outside, saidHawkins. Everything that is not ood

basically goes in there, and we have aseparate bin or cardboard products,

    which we pay or.

Hawkins says that employees embracedthe change to recycling, and emphasizes

that hes reducted his dumpster pickups(which cost him money) rom three times

    to just once weekly.

    Once you get everybody committed

to this, it just works. I could not behappier with the Countys new program,

says Hawkins. As a business owner, this works economically.

WORK SESSIONCouncil met at 6 pm or a work sessionto discuss a proposed twenty percent hikein sewer utility rates. Comptroller CharlieMcManus explained that sewer rates hadnot increased since 2002, and the proposedhike would help alleviate an expected gapbetween expenses and income, based on astudy by consultants B.P. Barber.

Charlie McCarty pointed out that the$60,000 taken annually rom sewerPILO unds to pay o the Folly RiverPark could be redirected toward the utilityexpenses themselves. Council member.D.J. Rich reerred to 'bad studies' rom B.P.Barber, and said that he couldnt support'blindly' adding a rate increase withoutknowing exact numbers. He compared itto 'throwing dart s blindolded.'

Paul Hume said that whi le the City doesn'tknow the exact shortall that could occur,it does know that the boat is taking on

    water.

I the city does nothing, it aces a biggerdecision down the road, said McManus.

Ron Hill spoke on behal o the FollyBeach Business Association to request thatthe $4000 allotted or reworks in AAXunds be redistributed, allowing $3000to go toward digital billboards along I-26and $1000 to go to the tourist directory. He said that the interstate ads put seeds inpeople's minds about where theyll spendspring and summer breaks, putting 'moreheads in beds out here.' Hill said that thereworks would still occur and be ullyunded.D.J. Rich pointed out that the money hadalready been designated or reworks andapproved on the consent agenda. He eltthat the changes should have been madeby the AAX board beore it came tocouncil."It's Folly Beach. Let's relax a little bit,"said Eddie Ellis, motioning to amend the

AAX request and distribution as Hillsuggested.

Te motion passed, with only D.J. Richopposed.

CITIZENS COMMENTSom Scruggs o 319 West Indian spokeabout the trac study conducted in 2009and 2010, asking that council reconsidermaking 2nd Street East a thoroughare byturning the stop signs to ace east/west.He elt the same concept was working wellat 2nd Street West. Scruggs said that heand Dave Stormer led a trac study thissummer during peak season along 2ndStreet East and ound that a fow-throughstreet was viable.Scruggs also suggested lowering the speedlimit on Folly Beach to 25 mph, with theexception o Ashley Avenue.D.J. Rich explained that a DOrepresentative told the city it would needto have a more proessional study done, but that a plan was in place to move theprocess along.

Chie Dennis Brown updated council onthe dispatch center, explaining that it wascurrently being phased in and that FollyBeach would handle its own emergencydispatches 24/7/365 start ing on October 31.

City Administrator oni Connor-Rooksexplained that the City had an agreement

with B.P. Barber or a study on the newbridge construction and updates to thesewer system, and that the company hadbeen bought out by URS. Mayor Goodwinexplained that i the City decided not tocontinue with URS, it would be startingrom scratch.

Connor-Rooks explained that the City would hold URS to the estimates andcosts in the contract with B.P. Barber.

"We're on the interstate going 80, 90 mi lesper hour with them," said city attorneyBen Peeples. "I can't imagine trying to

jump on another bus. But I think we canhold them to the numbers we've got."

"We can't aord the divorce right now,"said Paul Hume.

    Te motion passed unanimously.

Ordinance No.28-11 An Ordinanceraising sewer rates approximateltwent percent.Pennell Clamp said it was a big pill toswallow, but that the city had a big chunko money to spend to put a pipe under theriver or the sewer system, an expense thecity didn't expect six months ago.

Paul Hume admitted that the city didn'tknow how much money the utility was o,but it knew which direction it was o in.He said that i someone knew they neededto replace their roo, but they weren't sure

when or how much it would cost, it wouldstill be smart to put a ew 'extra nickels'toward it.

Charlie McCarty said that he couldn'tsupport the ordinance until the city knewexact numbers about the sewer utility'sshortall. He said a new Public WorksDirector and a utility advisory boardneeded to be in place beore raising rates.

    A

t the last two City Councilmeetings, much discussion

has ensued about the useand distribution o Accommodationsax (AAX) unds used to promotetourism to Folly Beach, o which 65percent is discretionary and subjectto council approval. Included in thisyears allotment is $15,000 to displayadvertisements encouraging peopleto visit Folly on the scoreboards atone season o Clemson home ootballgames. An additional $15,000 is spenteach season at University o SouthCarolina games, drawn rom the Citys30 percent appropriation to be useddirectly or promoting tourism, whichdoes not require council approval.

    When beach renourishment unds

were threatened to be cut by the AAX Advisory Boards recommendationslast month, several council membersquestioned the expenditure at ootballgames. Pennell Clamp, a Clemsonan, doubted that the expense bringsa dollar to this place.

City Administrator oni Connor-Rooks and Comptroller CharlieMcManus deended the expense, citing the growth o tourism on

the beach over the last 15 yearsand the increased AAX unds

that Folly receives because o thatgrowth. McManus also claimedthat the Citys tourism website,

www.FollyBeachSouthCarolina.org, receives a tremendous spike inactivity ater home games.

In the period between Sep. 10 andOct. 25, 2011, the site received 4,406new visitors, and 139 entrants or acontest to win a ree vacation on FollyBeach. During that time period, thesite received the most visits, 182, onMonday, Sep. 12, the second week othe ootball season. USC, however, played at Georgia two days prior, whileClemson hosted Woord. Visits to thesite progressively decreased throughout

the time period, presumably becauseo vacation season ending. Ater Oct.11, daily site v isits never exceeded 100in a day, dropping as low as 57 onFriday, Oct. 14.

Its dicult, or even impossible, todetermine an exact fnancial impact onFolly Beach rom advertising at ootballgames. Te idea recently arose on Isleo Palms, and council decided againstit beore it ever reached a vote.

It got some mentions but didntgain traction, says IOP council

member Michael Lotus. We didntthink it was a good expenditure ounds that really brought value to thecommunity.

Council approved AAX undingon Oct. 25, ully unding both theClemson advertising and beachrenourishment. Making up the initialshortall or renourishment cameprimarily by cutting Save the Light's$25,000 request completely. (Seeadjacent letter).

Connor-Rooks emphasizes thatthe ootball game advertising is part oan overall plan to encourage tourismat Folly Beach one she says thatthe number o visiting tourists would

indicate is working. As a whole, our tourism numbershave been up, while other cities in thestate are experiencing a decrease, saysConnor-Rooks. Were very proudo that, and grateul, rankly. When

we see something that seems to be working, there must be somethingbeing done right.

    o the Folly Current,

Save the Light, Inc is disappointed to learn thatthe Folly Beach City Council plans to zero out theLighthouses request or AAX unds to assist with thepreservation o the lighthouse, especially in light othe act that all other requests seem to be getting someshare o the small amount o unds remaining. It isunderstandable that the majority o the unds mustgo toward Folly beach re-nourishment. However, thelighthouse is an integral part o Folly Beach tourism

and has been since the early days o Folly Beach. Telighthouse was actually annexed into the city limitso Folly Beach ater Save the Light acquired thelighthouse so that the city could claim it as its own. Tecity has ound a way to und our requests in the pastand certainly should consider the long term eect thehistoric tower has on tourism on Folly Beach. Whenpeople come to the beach at Folly, they automaticallyassociate the beach and the Lighthouse. Te amazingnumber o tourists and Folly Beach locals who venturethrough the old Coast Guard station or a look and aphoto opportunity o the Lighthouse, sitting out inthe sur, is huge. Te Lighthouse is Folly Beach, eventhough she is called the Morris Island Lighthouse, andsits o the shores o Morris Island. Her connectionto the people o the beach is through Folly Beach.Lets not let her be neglected, especially since so manyo our volunteers who have worked long and hard to

achieve our goals to date are Folly residents or loverso Folly Beach.

We intend to make our voices heard at the next CityCouncil meeting so that Council will appreciate theimportance o continuing to support this Lighthouseand the preservation eorts at the eastern end o FollyBeach.

The midget drove up on a cherryred mini-motorcycle. Herdreadlocks were blond and very

long. She wore a bright pink bikini, mosto it hidden by her thick rolls o darkly

tanned Caribbean esh. She parked herbike, stretched orward and backwards, side to side, and scraped something o herlet bare oot, absently icking it behindher. I noticed she had a matching pinkanny-pack, the pouch section at the smallo her back.

She walked into Berts Market, removingsunglasses she didnt need. It was a humidsummer night, but there was a slight breezeo the Atlantic Ocean, coming rom thesoutheast just enough o a stirring o theair to keep the bugs at bay and the sweat toa minimum. Tere was a ull moon, andno doubt, something happening in ront ome that I would reect on later. Needless

to say, my interest was immediately piqued.Wouldnt yours be?

My name is Brian and I live on FollyBeach, otherwise known as the Edge o

America. I think we are a part o North America, but sometimes I wonder. Myhouse and restaurant is located next tothe only grocery store (Berts Market)on the island. Did I mention Folly isalso an island? I am also adjacent to theonly liquor store on the island and a mereminute walk to the beach. My buildingis two-storied, with a large deck thatoverlooks the ocean, Berts Market and theliquor store. My restaurant is downstairs. One o my avorite things to do is to siton my deck and people watch; this is a arbetter location than the mall. Who needsa V? I dont, and I dont have one. I ndthat on Friday and Saturday nights the

watching can be hilar ious, and sometimesa little disturbing. onight it was both.

It was Saturday, almost midnight and Iwas munching on grapes and a now-coldbaked brie. I was also working on a verynice bottle o chilled chardonnay. Imnormally a red wine guy, but the heat andhumidity required something cold andcrisp, and besides, the chardonnay wentso well with the brie. I nearly choked onit when the midget drove up. Wipingmy chin, I readjusted my chair so I had abetter view o Berts Market.

Other than the mini-motorcycle, therewas only one other car in the parking lot. Now, when I say mini-motorcycle I dontmean a toy, or a moped. It may have beensmall, and low to the ground with smallbut at tires, but it had a motor the sizeo a bail o hay. Tere were mean chromepipes coming rom this motor on bothsides. A large black Ford Expedition withsilver spinners and sur boards strappedto the top pulled up and almost ran intoit, backed up and took the parking spotnext to the mini-motorcycle. wo whitetwenty-something surers spilled romthe Ford, laughing and stumbling. Tey

were intoxicated, but not yet too ar gone.

Te driver pointed at the bike and said

something I couldnt make out. Teylaughed and did a quick circle around thebike, and ambled to the back o the Ford.wo beers were opened and poured intocups. A lighter ared rom within the

vehicle and a bowl was passed. I toppedo my wine and cut another slice o cheese.Tey would be ar gone soon.

Te little dreaded lady ex ited Berts, butdidnt go to her bike. Instead, she walkedtowards me, turned right and headedor the liquor store, tamping a pack ocigarettes. In South Carolina it is statelaw that all liquor stores must close at 7:00pm and all day on Sundays. Ridiculous Iknow, but thats the law, even i you are onthe Edge o America, Mayberry By the Sea

with a Buzz When the midget saw thatit was closed she stomped her little oot, cursed and opened her pack o cigarettes. She produced a lighter rom her anny

pack, icked it open and lit a cigarette. It was a real lighter, the type you have toput uel in, not a cheap disposable. Shestood there blowing blue clouds into thenight, tapping her oot and pondering.Te sunglasses went back on.

Meanwhile, the two surer dudes closedthe back doors o the Expedition and stoodthere chugging their beers and nishingthe bowl. Tey were both shirtless andbareoot, one covered in tattoos, theother with bleached blond hair. Teyresumed their inspection o the midgetsbike, laughing and pulling on theirbeers. Te bleach blond, who had beenthe passenger and seemed to be perhapsa little younger (and drunker), suddenlystraddled the bike, sat his beer down, andgrabbing the handlebars, started makingmotorcycle sounds. Te guy with the tatschoked-up with laughter, spitting beer.Oh boy, I thought, taking a sip o wine.

You dont mess with someones bike, eveni, or especially i, it is quite customized.Te little lady had pondered enough andstarted back towards her bike. She couldntsee what was going on around the corner, but it was a short trip, particularly sinceher stride was a little quicker. I surmisedthat she was still a little ticked that theliquor store was closed.

Tings started moving in slow-timeor me, not real slow, but a pace o

surreal-like. Was it the wine? I sat myglass down and moved to my deck rail.I hoped I wouldnt have to, but i theseguys started giving her a hard time I wasgoing to go down and put a stop to it. Ihave had to do as much in the past, underdierent circumstances o course, but Icant just stand back and let an injusticehappen. She was little and they were big,and there were two o them. Standing upI realized I wasnt too tipsy on the wine,

just in the moment and still a little takenback by what I was witnessing. But, itdidnt matterthe midget, I was soon todiscover, could carry her own.

She rounded the corner, saw the bleach

blond on her bike but never broke stride

or said a word. I will never orget justhow purposeul her every move was, norhow powerul. ruly, dynamite comes insmall packages. Te sun glasses casually

went back on top o her head, and as she

approached, the guy with the tats pointed with mouth agape, and suddenly burstinto laughter. By the time the bleachblond realized his riend was laughing atsomething other than him and had turnedto ace her, she was standing beside him.He looked at his riend and turned back toher. He started to laugh as well, but it wascut short. No pun intended.

She punched him in the mouth withher let hand, the cigarette still betweenher ngers. Sparks ew and he did too.

What still amazes me to no end is that asthe blond guy was knocked o o the bike- and almost taking the bike with him -she grabbed the closest handlebar and kept

the bike rom spilling. She had twisted herlittle body into the punishing blow andsprang back like a ball o erocious rubberbands, her dreads bouncing around andback like whips. Her eet had never letthe ground and she didnt stumble. She

was one cool cucumber. I elt as i I werewatching Kill Bill. And she wasnt evenclose to being done.

Te guy with the tats, i he wasnt inshock that his riend had been deckedby a thong-wearing-blond-dread-ying-midget, then he surely was when she camearound the ront o the bike, pulling romher anny-pack a telescoping metal baton, snapping it open with the ick o a wrist. His hands went up as she einted towardshis head, but then she looped the batonaround and cracked him hard on his letankle. She had the baton in her righthand, but quickly switched it to her let, shufed her eet and cracked him on theother ankle. He ell against the spinneron the ront wheel o the drivers side othe Excursion, trying to grab both injuredankles at the same time. Te blondhad gotten to one knee, his right handcovering his bleeding and burnt mouth. He reached toward the bike to steadyhimsel with his other hand, but shequickly lunged orward and cracked himon the outstretched hand. Te hand wasquickly withdrawn and he started alling

back. I thought I heard him yelp, but all

sound was drowned-out as she now hadthe baton in both hands and was whackinghim all over. She was like a damn steamengine, delivering eight, nine, ten, teenblows aster than you can blink. She was

beating him like a dirty rug.Te other guy had managed to get

to his eet, but was very unsteady andhunched over. He tried one eeble steptowards her and she spun, raising thebaton like a samurai. Tats when I knowI heard a yelp, or more like a screech. Itcame rom the guy with the tats as hestumbled backwards and crashed violentlyinto a metal garbage can against the wallo Berts. He would have crawled insidethe garbage can i it hadnt been ull, orperhaps, i he had unctional legs. Heheld up both hands, his ace imploringher. She hesitated, closed the baton butdidnt return it to the anny pack. With

the retracted baton in one hand, shemounted her bike and started the engine. She slow-backed the bike out into the road

with her stout little legs, stopping a eweet rom the blond who was partially inthe road, in a etal position. A big grincreased her ace as she gently tapped himon the head with the closed baton andreturned it to her anny-pack. She pusheddown her sunglasses and peeled o witha squeal. I grabbed my wine, drank deepdirectly rom the bottle and returned tothe deck rail.

Te doors o Berts swung open andone o the employees stepped out ontothe sidewalk. Te banging o the trashcan had been loud. It was the usual latenight cashier, and she looked at the tatsguy against the garbage can, who wason his side now with both hands on hisorehead, and then the other as he crawledand scratched his way out o the road, stillholding his right hand over his injuredmouth.

Hello! I yelled, holding up my bottleo wine. Tey were beat-up by a midget! She looked at me and smiled, dropped andshook her head.

Yeah, right! She yelled back, andturning to the guy at the garbage can,

who had returned to clutching his swollenankles, get your drunk ass home and takeblondie with you.

    Recycling continuesfrom cover

    works economically.

    When the County expanded their

pilot program to Folly last month,Hawkins called and asked to receive six

bins at Te Grill. His eorts to schedulea weekly pickup were ruitul, and have

now spread to other businesses on Center

    Street.

Just a block down the road, Woodys isalso joining in on the eort. Like manyother island businesses, beore the new

policy, the recycling eort was gra ssrootsand oten driven by environmentally

minded employees and owners.Businesses that recycled had to take it

upon themselves to place all glass bottles, plastic materials, aluminum cans, and

paper into the smaller blue bins, as well

as drop them o at the recycling centero Folly Road.

I think it is a great thing to do, stated Woodys bartender Kelly illman. We

have been recycling or a long time now,

and I dont see why others arent doingit.

    Te placement o a recycling

dumpster at Berts was a tremendoushelp to the island-wide recycling eort.

Sur Bar, Te Folly Beach Brew Pub, Te

Drop In Deli, and a ew other businesseshave utilized this container over the past

    ew months.

I work at Te Brew Pub, Te Drop

In, and Te Pour House, said localbartender Garrick Waller. I know we

have been recycling since we opened (TeBrew Pub) about our years ago. At the

Pour House, we actually go through ourbins and sort out what isnt needed.

Drop In Deli owner Lewis Dodsonused to haul his restaurants bottles and

cans to the Countys drop site on Signal

Point Road on James Island (they stillhaul their own cardboard there). When

the County introduced their program, hereceived ve bins that are now serviced

    weekly.

Its made it so much easier, says

Dodson, who adds that his grandmotherstarted a recycling program at her nursing

home, so even beore County pickup, heconsidered it mandatory. Now, its easier

to recycle than it is not to.

Te Crab Shack also utilizes the new

service. In the past, dedicated employeesvolunteered to take recycling to SignalPoint Road, but the eorts were never

consistent. Since the County beganbusiness pickup, theyve placed recycling

bins behind each bar and at the waitersstation, redirecting all o their bottles and

    cans away rom the landll.

At the Lost Dog Ca, an employee

has long made a daily run with their milkcartons and cardboard to the Countys

drop site on James Island. Te Wich

Doctor used the residential bins in thepast (without selling alcohol, their output

was relatively low), but says theyre

grateul or the new larger bins with

wheels. Around the corner, co-ownerso the Sur Bar, Hank Cagle and Perry

Darby, have been doing the sa me or over

three years, taking turns on their wayhome rom shits at the restaurant.

Cagle owns and operates a tree servicebased out o Mount Pleasant, o which all

the limbs he cuts are used to keep guests warm at the replace on their outdoor

patio. Fryer grease is picked up by acompany called Lowcountry Grease, who

clean the ventilation hoods in exchange.

    Private Recycling

    Fisher Recycling, which operates near

the old Naval Base in North Charleston, also maintains t wo clients on Folly Beach.

Fisher is a privately owned recycling

company that collects glass and plasticproducts rom businesses, using a massive

pulverizing machine to grind down theproducts. In turn, they use the brightly

colored glass to make custom tile andcountertops.

Ritas and aco Boy have both utilizedFisher Recycling since their respective

    openings.

Tey provide us with two pick-ups

a week during the busy season, andtypically once a week now, said Ritas

Mike Spinelli. Because o the volume,

we opt to pay or their service.

    Still Doing Teir Part

Surprisingly, only a ew businesses on

the island do not recycle glass, a luminum, plastic, or paper. Some strictly recycle

their cardboard. Blu Restaurant inTe ides hotel inormed Te Current

that they recycle only their cardboard

products, placing them in a receptaclelocated in the rear o the restaurant.Loggerheads Bar and Grille also recycles

    their cardboard.

    Planet Follywood plans to acquire

blue bins and participate in the County

program in the next month, says ownerD.J. Rich. Snapper Jacks and Folly Beach

Shrimp Company owner Mike Kiragessays hes been recycling cardboard or

years, but was unaware o the Countysnew program or businesses and is

immediately looking into participating. A bartender at the Sand Dollar Social

Club said that their waste is picked up

by the local sanitation department andsited through or recyclables.

Folly Beach is home to arguably themost laid-back yet highly productive beach

restaurants that surround peninsularCharleston. Each business has their

own distinctive layout and business plan, and everyone is neighborly, or the most

part. Te trend among Folly business

owners has moved toward recycling inrecent years, mostly because its deemed

cost eective. With the Countys newprogram in place, its likely that business

recycling will soon become the norm.

On October 29, Charlestons premier pet-loving gala drew hundreds o gueststo the beautiul Crystal Ballroom at the Marriott Hotel on Lockwood asit was host to the Pet Helpers 7th Annual Fur Ball. Tis years theme was

DiscoInFur No, and was Pet Helpers biggest undraiser o the year.

Upon arrival guests (and their pets) were immediately welcomed onto the red carpetand pictures were taken. Te pets costumes were a major highlight o the evening.Moving on rom the puparrazi the evening got started with beverages rom the openbar and incredible hors doeuvres. Guests were able to view and bid on the many SilentAuction items which included get-aways, art work, dinners, personal and pet services, jewelry, gol packages and many other exciting and unique items. From there, guests were ushered into the beautiul ballroom that had been decorated in 70s Discoincluding a large dance foor and disco ball! Guests enjoyed a delicious dinner whilebeing entertained by the evenings dancers beore the Live Auction that was co-emceedby om Craword and Victoria Hansen o Channel 4 News.

Tere were special activities or the dogs and even included a Doggy Disco. Tepets hung out, made new riends and enjoyed treats or enjoying a walk by the volunteerdog walkers that so graciously gave their time. Ater the Silent Auction, the pets wereable to reunite with their loving owners and dance the night away.

Te outpouring o support tonight speaks to the great compassion and caring o our

community or all our homeless animals who are cared or at Pet Helpers until oreverhomes are ound, said Carol Linville, president and ounder o Pet Helpers.

Every dollar raised rom the 7th Annual Fur Ball enables Pet Helpers to continuelie-saving work. Arriving on Folly Beach, you may notice an unamilia r site. Passing the dummycar has become an everyday event or islanders, but now the Folly Beach PublicSaety Department, with the help o city sta, has gone with a new design or

their cruisers. Te new look entails a silver basecoat with blue lettering. Chie DennisBrown stated that this was a direct result o the vendor who designed the older whitecruisers going out o business. Since they had diculty nding a new vendor to match

the classic design, they had to ormulate a whole new approach or new police cars.Sta decided that we wanted to go with this new design to make the cruisers more

visible, said Chie Brown. We are not retrotting the old cars, so this design will onlybe donned on the new vehicles. I like to involve everyone on sta in the operations oour department, as it is good or morale. Some people have responded positively to thenew design, and a ew have displayed their concern as wel l.

Sta Note: No decision has been reached on whether or not Folly ofcers will berequired to wear cowboy hats and aviator sunglasses while on patrol in the newvehicles.

Fishing in October was superb andanglers can expect November tobe just as good i not better. Cold

nights serve as a reminder to sh that theyhad better eat now or it will be a long ewmonths ahead. As usual, articial lures

become very eective or both redsh andtrout. ake advantage o those sunny daysand go catch a mess o sh!

argeting the rapidly growing schoolso redsh is a popular pursuit this timeo year. Were starting to nd schools oty or more redsh. Darker coloredarticials remain the most productivepatterns especially those with some sparkle. A signicant majority o the time we areusing utter hooks that have a weight onthe shank that makes the lures dart anddive. Youll want to ick your rod tip to

really make that lure dance. Scared bait shrarely ee in a straight line!

Its hard to think o a better way tocatch a trout than with a live shrimp riggedon a popping cork. Ill attach a two ootleader to the cork and a size 1 circle hook

on the other end. Cast along grass banks, over oyster beds and at creek mouths and watch or that cork to dive under! Its sohard to do but when that cork drops, reelthe sh tight and let the circle hook do thework. Using a big hook set will sometimesrip the bait right out o the shs mouth.

Fly shing has been better at low tidethan at high tide. Even when we couldnd plenty o redsh up in the grass, they just didnt seem to be that interested. Onthe other hand, you could watch podso sh race each other to eat a y on the

ats. Not unlike articials, ies in darkercolors, especially black, proved to be themost eective. Remember when casting toa school o redsh, try to land your y onthe edges so as to not spook them.

Ihave recently seen a growing epidemicin the love lives o people under theage o 40. Te conversation and

passion are growing stale; and I have atheory Anticipation. I see the youngerdemographic on their cell phonesconstantly. Heres the deal kids, i youtext your date eight times while they areon the way to meet you somewhere, what will you possibly have to talk to themabout once they arrive and sit across romyou?

Te younger generation has beenspoiled by an era o instant graticationand even more instant communication.Every thought they have is known by all otheir riends within seconds o thinking it.Yet in the land o love, there is somethingto be said or a certain amount o space.

It is true Absence really does make theheart grow onder.

Does a kiss not taste sweeter once youhave had plenty o time to imagine it manydiferent ways? Having the opportunityto experience that moment o seeing eachother or the rst time ater any amounto time apart, i nothing else, gives you somany memories that you can hold onto andrelive, again and again, orever. You get to

live out through antasy the running intoeach others arms passionate movie kiss;the slow, sweet, nger on the lips, lets

enjoy and remember every moment o thiskiss; and then there is always the pureand utter elation, jump into each othersarms amidst a t o giggles and happy tearskiss. Each o these antasies, once lived outwithin your subconscious, becomes dreammemory that can be revisited but onlyi you give yoursel the chance to imagineit. Really whats better than that? Who wants one kiss hello when you can havethree or our? Its all about having thattime away rom your signicant other.

For most people, its a rare occasion thatyou dream up romantic scenarios aboutthe guy/ girl sitting across the couch romyou drinking a beer, lounging in ratty

pajamas, and watching Wednesday nightsitcoms. Tis is not to say that it does nothappen, because it does. When you alldeep into the real true love I believe thatthere is no amount o everyday activitiesthat cause that sort o passion and antasyto disappear, yet you work or it. AndI bet that i you ask those couples whohave years or decades under their belts, they will tell you that having your own

interests, hobbies, and lie really is vastlyimportant.

No one is saying that this time apart

is easy. Its not. Just like no one takespictures o all o that time they spendscaling the side o Mount Kilimanjaro, because quite rankly that part sucks. Noone is smiling, or laughing, or enjoyingthemselves at that moment; in act theyare probably in hell. Yet once the climbis over and they have actually made it tothe top, then its all smiles, and joy, andlook at what we have done. Tats wheneveryone breaks out the camera and startsto document their accomplishment. Tenish line is the un pa rt, but the journeythe journey is what makes it all so worthit. Making it to the top, overcoming thezenith; this is just the gravy. Te climb is

the part that changes you or the better;the climb is the part that turns you intosomeone who can appreciate the gravy.

I you nd yoursel in a new relationshipand you want to be sure that things stayexciting and resh or more than a month, you may want to give this a try. It iseasy to want to move everything in yourschedule around to ensure optimum timewith your new honey, but in the long run

it may not be the best thing. Start small talk at the end o your work day insteado 15 times throughout; go out to girls/

guys night out and dont spend the wholetime texting your bedmate (they will aterall be in the bed when you get home).

I you are in a relationship that youbelieve is going somewhere, just enjoy it,and remember i this is the right personor you you have a whole lietime totell all o your unny stories, witty retorts, childhood shenanigans, and anything elsethat may pop in your head. And while youare missing them, and it eels like you arebeing torn in two, remember the climbremember that is kind o the point. Whenyou do nally get your arms around themagain or the rst time, its going to be

    thousands o times better

    than the alternative.
