FOOD AND FAIRY TALEWe selected 3 traditional stories from the
„Gebrüder Grimm“,the fairy tales we grow up with in
Germany.
The Potato King: we told the story in a special setting, we let the children draw the story and we learned how to make a
potato pancake.
Hansel & Gretel: the parents read the story to the children, they made a gingerbread house which we ate at our Advent
celebration with the parents. We learned about an opera and
made a shadow-play together.
Schlaraffenland: we read the story, brainstormed about our very own Schlaraffenland; we baked a cobbler and created a
picture-book.
The Potato King. This tale is about a real big potato that jumps out of the
potato box, rolls down the street and meets all kinds of
different creatures who want to eat it.
At the end it „goes“ with the children. They make
delicious potato pancakes out of it and are not hungry any
longer.
First: all the actors for our story and then:
curtain call...
We tell the story
about:
„The Potato King“
We draw the
Potato-King
How does he look like,
the great Potato-King?
Do you think,
he likes to go with me?
The Potato-King has gone with the children,
they make Potato-Pancakes out of „him“
Step by step: we make
a potato pancake.
The clean-up:
tables,
hands,etc.
And the final
product:
Potato-King-
Pan-Cake
The story about „Hansel & Gretel“We,re making a gingerbread house.
the children work
with gingerbread and
sugar mixed with
water to „glue“ it all
together.
They are very proud
of their Gingerbread
house. We will eat it
with the parents.
We make a Play out of the story: Hansel & Gretel
The children take a seat
in front of the screen.
They get ready for the
shadow-play of the
story.
We play parts of the
Fairy-Tale-Opera from
Engelbert Humperdinck
„Hansel and Gretel“
We cut the figures
out of thick black
paper, put them on
sticks and let them
„act“ on the canvas
screen.
The Story about SCHLARAFFENLAND guided us
throughout the last three months: we made cobbler, a picture book, and celebrated in a party on carnival
our „Schlaraffenland“
I know of a country of plenty some people would like to visit, if they only knew where it was and how to get there...In this land there are houses made of pancake-roofs and gingerbread doors. The walls are made of meatloaf and the fences around the houses are woven sausages. All the wells in the garden cart wine or juice, whatever you wish, just put your mouth under it and drink. In the trees grow fresh biscuits, under it flows milk and honey just for you to eat & drink. The fish swim already cooked in the rivers and the chicken fly crossly fried in the air. The stones are made out of your favorite cheese. When it snows it will be powdered sugar coming from the sky... so all in all you can nibble & drink all day long as much as you like.Money and pretty clothes grow on trees for you to take, so you can dress as you wish. When ever you have the need for a fountain of youth, you will find it there and then you can baths all your aches and pains away! All your wishes will be in reach for you, just think of it...!
But to get to the Schlaraffenland you first have to find it and if you do, eat through a thick wall of apple cobbler, and believe me, that wall is VERY VERY THICK ...
This cobbler may be the wall around „Schlaraffenland“ !
Here the recipe for Schlaraffenland-CobblerYou need...
100g milk reis , a pinch of salt,
1l milk
500g apples, that taste tart,
a hand full of raisins,
1 teaspoon of cinnamon.
And for the vanille sauce:

a package vanille-sauce powder
2 tablespoons of cinnamon.
...To do:
bring half the milk with the rice

slowly, steering constantly until
reis has steeped to softness. Fill
into creased baking dish; add
sliced apples, raisins and spices;
top with vanille sauce, which
you've cooked according to
instructions on the package.

The Kindergarten-bake-house:
Ingredients and
measurement, the

to „read“ a recipe.
With love&care
the children

concentrated
in their work.
Everybody
knows what to
do...
Almost done!
We add the
Vanille sauce

In our Schlaraffenland we get to be who we are. We play as fairy
tale creatures who ate through the cobbler wall and now we'll
