Accurate measurement = hidden savingsSimple and cost-effective solutions end frustration.

Steuben Foods, Inc. is a contract manufacturer of aseptic products. The range of products runs from organic milk to soy milk to soup broth, coffee concentrates and nutriceuticals.

As with all manufacturing plants, product yield is extremely important, but this is especially critical for a contract manufacturer. Steuben Foods assembled a loss improvement team to determine where product losses occur within the production facility. The team decided that in order to determine where losses are occurring; you must first have reliable data.

tory schedule was established and the Promass was connected to a chart recorder to monitor flow rates and movement.

The first immediate result was the discovery that the truck scales used for incoming supply were inaccurate. The Promass was able to provide more consistent and repeatable measurement. The team estimates that the return on investment for the Promass mass flow meter and the cart was about one month.

Today the cart is still in use and in addition to accu-rately measuring the transfer of product from storage to process; it also measures the transfer of product from process to filling and is used as a reference in calibration. For example, vortex meters are used to re-cord and control CIP flow and these are calibrated on a regular schedule using the Promass meter. Turbine water meters and sucrose meters are checked using the same method.

Hydrostatic level transmitters are also used on the milk silos but their purpose is monitoring. As soon as media is transferred in or out the Promass cart is used. In fact, to ensure accurate reporting of incoming products, Steuben Foods installed a second permanent Promass on the receiving line to verify the truck scales.

The Promass was able to provide more consis-tent and repeatable measurement. The team estimates that the return on investment for the Promass mass flow meter and the cart was about one month.

The Steuben Foods facility has about 20 storage silos for a total inventory of 4,000,000 lbs. of product. With 15 production lines, product is constantly being moved in and out of silos.

The problem is compounded by the fact that the specific gravity of each product is different. The pos-sibility of having a PLC calculate the weight based on an estimated specific gravity was considered, but this approach would simply introduce more error. A modification to each silo by installing multiple sensors to determine actual specific gravity was also considered. The loss improvement team decided to try a new approach.

The solution was simple and cost effective. By mount-ing an Endress+Hauser PROline® Promass 83 F Co-riolis mass flow meter on a wheeled cart, the content of each tank could be measured very accurately as the tanks were filled and later emptied. A simple inven-

Pairing the Liquiphant M and Deltapilot DB 50 in your mea-surement process reduces the potential for lost production, overflow clean-up, and fines.

Hydrostatic level sensors are commonly used to monitor the level of every storage tank in a dairy. For a very low cost, a tuning fork can be added to provide overspill protection. If the liquid reaches the fill limit the intake valve is closed and the next tank begins filling automati-cally. This simple pairing reduces the potential for lost production, overflow clean-up, and fines.

Talk to Endress+Hauser about all your storage tank applications, from tall silos to small balance tanks with rapid temperature changes. Deltapilot DB 50 hydro-static level transmitter has been tested and verified to have the fastest recovery time following CIP. This reduces the cycle time after CIP increasing the overall throughput of the system. Deltapilot DB 50 is the best choice for tanks with rapid temperature variations.

Your maintenance costs are reduced by the unprece-dented zero stability of the DB 50 which does not need to be re-zeroed or recalibrated. The Liquiphant M tuning fork can be mounted through the side of the silo, in the vent line or even through the silo top. It provides trouble-free liquid level detection in storage, balance, mixing and receiving tanks. Liqui-phant M can be used for any liquid—measurement is independent of properties and ignores foam.

Partnering with Endress+Hauser will help you achieve reliable and repeatable measurements to maintain qual-ity and consistency in your production.

How to simplify your process measurementsInnovative straight-tube Coriolis flow meter designed to drain to the last drop.

The straight, single tube PROline Promass I sensor has proven itself to be ideally suited for density measurement of ice cream.

Endress+Hauser became involved in a test with one ice cream manufacturer who wanted to automate the overrun measurement to determine the amount of air in the ice cream. This overrun was being determined manually—using an off–line density measurement at ambient pressure.

When Endress+Hauser became involved, the goal was to figure out if the ambient overrun could be predicted in–line, under process conditions and at a higher pres-sure. Promass 83 I and an Endress+Hauser pressure sensor were used for measurement, then the results were recalculated allowing for ambient conditions.

Endress+Hauser established a partnership with this manu-facturer, agreeing to share knowledge and offering testing possibilities for new equipment. These deep relation-ships with customers lead to potential innovations from Endress+Hauser, and in this situation, potential improve-ment in both quantity and quality of ice cream production.

Endress+Hauser’s quest for innovative excellence is most visible with the Promass I sensor. The I is a straight–through single tube design available in five different sizes, including three full bore versions to optimize accuracy versus pressure drop.

The Promass I sensor is constructed of titanium with a single flow path that is completely drainable; allowing for safe and easy cleaning and reducing the risk of clogging. The I sensor meets all sanitary standards, including 3–A and EHEDG.

Achieve higher accuracy and repeatabilityThe versatile Promag 50/53H is designed to fit sanitary process measurement needs.

The PROline® Promag 50/53H electromagnetic flow measuring system has been designed to meet the sanitary requirements of the food and beverage industry, specifically cleanability.

The internal diameter of the Promag’s flow tube matches sanitary tubing industrial standard (OD tubing) dimension. As a result, there is no step change between the flow tube and piping. A crevice free connection between the flow tube and the process connection is made possible by the Promag’s sanitary gasket design

Typical applications for Promag include blending, batch control, filling operations and CIP control. The batching function eliminates the need for a separate batch controller. The Promag meets the PMO require-ments for timing pump replacement making it ideal for meter–based pasteurization control. Promag’s high sampling rates means higher accuracy and repeatability when used for small batching and filling applications. A molded, reinforced PFA liner allows the meter to withstand drastic temperature and vacuum conditions that sometimes occur during CIP.

Like all PROline flowmeters offered by Endress+Hauser, the “Touch Control” interface and “Quick Setup” menu promotes simple setup and configuration resulting in reduced setup and training time.

Randall Abruzzini at Interstate Monroe Machinery and Supplies, a long term user of the PROline family of Coriolis mass flowmeters and magnetic flowmeters comments, “I have had very good success in applying the Endress+Hauser magnetic flowmeters to many applications in the food, beverage, and dairy industry. I have found them to hold up well in both production and CIP applications. The transmitters are easily navi-gable and the flow sensors easy to install.”

Promag H meets 3–A sanitary standards, is constructed of FDA GRAS listed materials and has passed an EHEDG cleanability test.
