Allergy or Intolerance: What’s     the Difference?By Editor Mocha Latte

To learn more about being good         citizens in our communities and       serving our neighbors, our class has         been studying food allergies. We       hope you enjoy reading our       magazine! To subscribe and     receive a copy of our next issue,           return the square on the back to           Room 7 or any 5th grader.

Do you have a food allergy? If not,             you probably know someone else who does. A true food allergy reaction usually happens soon after                             eating the food. You might have itchy skin or difficulty breathing (Martin).

Some people have food intolerances, which is not exactly the same as a food allergy. You may feel fine                                   immediately after eating a food that your digestive system does not tolerate well, but later in the day you                                   may have an upset stomach or a headache (Martin).

Because many people do not understand this difference, those of us with food intolerances may need to                               call them food allergies to communicate clearly with others.

Martin, Laura J., M.D. “Food Allergy, or Something Else?” WebMD. 25 Oct. 2012. Web. 15 Nov. 2013.

Each of us chose one common allergen.           Then we counted how many things we           eat (or use) on a daily basis that include               that allergen. Here is a chart of the             results.

The Advice Column

Q: My friend has a food allergy, how can I help?A: You can clean yourself and wash your hands so your                   friend won’t have a reaction.

Q: I think I have a food allergy, what should I do?A: If you have a bad reaction you should get help.

I would like to talk about food allergies. These are the                   United States most common food allergies.• NUTS• EGGS• MILK• SOY• WHEATSeafood and shellfish can also cause a serious reaction.

Get The Specifics.Find out what foods your friend is allergic to. Find out what the                       symptoms of a reaction are. Many symptoms are immediatea rash, a                   tingling in the tongue or mouth.

Don’t Share Food. So that turkey sandwich you made on the counter next to your                     brothers PB&J could spell trouble for your friend.

Song Recommendation  “Jesus Loves Me”

O.k. I know what you are thinking. “Jesus Loves Me” is a little kid song. I’m not disagreeing, but if                                     you look at the words you’ll see that this song is God’s way of telling you that He loves you. So maybe                                         it is not a kiddy song.

Picnic Fun for Everyone: Simple Ways to Protect Yourself and Your FriendsBy Guest Editor Allergen Annie

I don’t know about you but I sure love a good picnic in the park! Sunny weather. Fresh air. The                                     playground. Oh! The playground right there, available for nearly endless fun. What if you had a food                               allergy? Would you pack a safe lunch? Yes. Would you run fearlessly towards the monkey bars?                             Probably not. Those with Food Allergies know that allergens are everywhere! Those with Food                         Allergies know that even though the park can be fun, it can also be a place where peanut butter was                                     smeared on the slide or a milky ice cream dripped under foot. I have some basic tips for how even                                     those without Food Allergies can help make sure the playground is a fun place for everyone.

Eat in an appropriate place. You can eat on a blanket                   and take it home and wash it (remember to fold it up                     from the outside, in so you’re not shaking the food                 crumbs on the ground). Many parks and playgrounds             have areas where you can eat at a table nearby. Kids                   with Food Allergies know to be careful of these food                 areas. It’s a logical place for food to be so they are                     used to being extra careful in these areas.

Know that all foods can be hazardous. Even though               you’re not eating cheese or a peanut butter sandwich,               you may still be eating someone else’s allergen. The top                 allergens can hide in the most unexpected places! Did               you know there is Milk in NonDairy Creamer? There               is Soy in almost all cookies and crackers. There is milk                   in most lunch meats and breads. There is corn in almost everything that is very very sweet because of                                   Corn Syrup. Also, even if you do avoid the top allergens, many people are allergic to other things you                                   would never guess. Rice, Green Beans, Sweet Potatoes and Beef are just a few ingredients that might                               be an allergen for someone else. Allergies are tricky, they can be anywhere or anything!

Clean Up. Throw away all of your trash in an appropriate trash can. Remember to wash your hands                                 and mouth or at least wipe them off if there is not a sink nearby. Allergens are not germs. They cannot                                       be “killed” with sanitizer or lysol. A simple washing is the best way to clean up an allergen.

Have fun. Play at the park. Eat a picnic lunch! Do it with consideration. You might be saving a life and                                       not even know it. Go in Peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God!

How do people get peanut allergies?People get peanut allergies because their bodies have a reaction to the peanut                       substance that they eat. Peanut allergies are usually treated by and exclusion                     diet and avoiding foods that may contain peanuts or any peanut substance.

Who is more susceptible to food allergies, males or females?According to the Allergen Bureau, allergies are more common in males.

Do Dogs have Allergies??

QWhat are the common signs of a food allergy?

AAnything from chronic ear inflammation to         gastrointestinal problems.

QWill changing my dog’s diet trigger a food             allergy?

AIf the dog has been sensitized to something in a diet                   then it could. There’s no way of knowing if your dog                   has been sensitized to an ingredient, though.

Peanut Sniffing Pooches (and other allergies)

Many kids are affected by life threatening food allergies. Dogs can help! Dogs have a much better                               sense of smell than people. They can be trained to sniff out allergens in food. There are companies that                                   train dogs to help people with food allergies.  Here is some information about two of them.

I Smell Trouble Allergen Alert Dogs have allowed families to take cross country vacations, participate in                             social events, enjoy eating at restaurants and more! Angel Service Dogs also train service dogs for the                               same reason. They’ll even help with the cost if having a service dog. I learned on their website that                                   millions of children in the United States are affected by food allergies.

Devotion: Breakfast Accident!

Bobby was cleaning his room just as his mom was making breakfast. Bobby was allergic to many                               things, so his mom had to be careful when making meals. After he ate, he started coughing. Then he                                   started to get a stomach ache. He was having an allergic reaction! His mom accidentally put chocolate in                                 the pancakes. She took Bobby to the hospital, and then they gave him medicine. After that, he felt                                 better.

The chocolate is like sin. But God is like the medicine and cleans you of sin.

PRAYER: Dear Lord,Please help people who are sick, and who have food allergies, and have a safe                           rest of the day, Amen.

Questions:1 Are food allergies ever good to have?Yes and no. yes because it could harm you even without food allergies.No because you might like the food you are allergic to it and you might eat it.2 Where did food allergies come from?It came from the curse God gave Adam and Eve after they ate of the tree they were not supposed to                                       eat of.
