Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

This month, I want to share a prayer poem about gratitude that has been on my mind. May it challenge and encourage you, as it has me, to be more mindful of the many blessings in our lives, and the ways in which we can bless others. I especially like the way this prayer poem finds reasons for gratitude in the places we might not expect. This prayer poem is from Ted Loder’s book, Guerrillas of Grace: Prayers for the Battle.*

Praise Be to You for Life Praise be to you, O God, for life and for my intense desire to live; praise be to you for the mystery of love and for my intense desire to be a lover; praise be to you for this day and another chance to live and love.

Thank you, God, for singers of songs

for teachers of songs, who help me sing along the way, … and for listeners. Thank you, God,

for those who attempt beauty rather than curse ugliness,

for those who take stands, rather than take polls,

for those who risk being right rather than pandering to being liked,

for those who do something rather than talking about everything.

God, grant me grace, then, and a portion of your spirit that I may so live as to give others cause to be thankful for me, thankful because I have not forgotten how to hope, how to laugh, how to say “I’m sorry,”

THANKSGIVING BASKETS

Saturday, November 18

Again this year, CTS will provide Thanksgiving baskets for families in the Gaithersburg area. We need contributions of food items and money for grocery store gift cards. There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board for contributions. A grocery store gift card will be included for each family to

purchase their own main dish. Contributions towards gift cards for food items may be placed in the offering basket; please designate “Thanksgiving baskets” on the memo line.

We will be assembling the baskets on Saturday, November 18. All items should be at church by 9:00 a.m. so that we can take inventory and shop for missing items, if necessary. Non-perishable items can be placed in the parlor or the church office beginning November 13. We need adults and youth to help assemble and drivers to deliver the baskets. Any way that you can assist will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, contact Tyler Smith or Rob Palmer.

THE SERMON: PUTTING FAITH INTO ACTION

Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words. – St. Francis of Assisi

Before I get to this month’s thoughts on the parts of the service, I wanted to catch everyone up on the status of the potential move to one service. After the Congregational meeting, the Worship Committee made a recommendation to the Council that, starting on the First Sunday of Advent, the church move to one service at 9:30 a.m. to be followed by Hospitality and then Education. There will be a special Congregational Meeting on November 5, at 9:45 a.m. A quorum is needed at the meeting to vote on the proposal.

The sermon is a part of the service that is often underestimated by most people or thought to be something that must be tolerated rather than looked forward to. But the sermon is really one of the most crucial parts of any service. In the sermon, we are given some ideas about how we can make our faith and what we heard in the lessons during the service. The ELCA “Faith Practices – Living Our Baptism” page says:

Living Our Baptism is our faith journey as we come from the baptismal waters to live a new life in Christ. Living Our Baptism means living a life nurtured by the faith practices of discipleship.

Martin Luther taught that every morning we are to rise and say, “I am baptized into Christ” and then go about our daily life inspired, guided, and empowered by our baptism as we live a life made new by Christ. The Holy Spirit guides and inspires us to continue in the covenant of holy baptism.

James 2:14-17 (NIV) says:

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

As Christians, we are called to go out into the world and show the love that God has for all people, regardless of their faith, gender, sexual orientation, race, skin color, nation of origin, or any other aspect of their lives. Our faith is meant to be lived and a part of that living it is to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves due to a lack of power or for any other reason.

In this time, it is all too easy to fall prey to “slacktivism,” defined as actions performed via the Internet in support of a political or social cause but regarded as requiring little time or involvement. While online activity is a good start, we need to do more in our community and our world to help everyone and to lift them up.

Not every sermon is going to be applicable to everyone; sometimes the sermon will touch some and not others, and that is to be expected.

Sometimes the sermon may just plant a seed that takes a while to germinate and grow. So, the next time (and every time) you are at a service, listen to the sermon, reflect on it, and allow it to do what it will do. As the acronym for our name means, we are to “Care, Teach, Serve” each and every day.

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love." – St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

– Matt Vandover

ALTAR FLOWERS FOR 2016

The 2016 chart for altar flowers is posted in the hallway. Sign up now and throughout 2016 to provide flowers for Sunday church services (except during Lent when flowers are not used on the altar). In addition, you can mark on the chart if you would like to give the flowers to Sunrise at Montgomery Village next door for the enjoyment of the residents.

KOINONIA GROUPS

This year, the three Koinonia groups will run a bit more independently. Each group will make its own plans for discussion topics and questions, allowing the groups to explore what is of interest to the group. This does NOT mean that people have to stick to one group. You are welcome to attend whichever group fits your schedule for any given month. While most people have settled into a group, if there is a month you cannot attend your regular group, please attend one of the other groups. Or if a topic/question appeals to you, go and join in the discussion. We will try to get the topics into Footnotes, if it’s not possible, pay attention to the Sunday morning announcements and the Monday communiqués.

Book Club: Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance

On November 5, at 7 p.m., we’ll gather in the parlor at 7:00 p.m. to discuss J.D. Vance’s Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and

Culture in Crisis. This description from The New Yorker says this about this compelling and articulate book, “Why is hillbilly culture so defensive, insular, and frozen in time? Vance argues that – because no culture exists in a vacuum – hillbillies are only partially to blame. In the course of his journey from Middletown [Ohio] to the Marines to Yale, Vance finds that hillbilly pessimism is, in its toxicity, equaled by the disdain that metropolitan people feel for those they call ‘rednecks’ or ‘white trash.’ The Marine Corps is a genuine American melting pot and, for Vance, a transformative experience. But, at Yale, Vance learns that he’s better off hiding the details of his upbringing.” Whether you have read the book or not, join us as we discuss our understanding of Vance’s perspective of his background and how it plays out in the divisiveness in our nation today.

Council Minutes for October 9, 2017

The meeting was opened at 7:30 p.m. with devotions led by Matt Vandover.

Pastoral care concerns were discussed.

The agenda was approved.

The minutes from the September council meeting were approved with one addition.

Tom Eastlack reported that September was a negative month. Twenty-five pledges are behind.

Chuck Eater reported that we had a negative balance for September, due to the repairs to the sewer line. A motion was passed to treat Marjorie’s organist position as a temporary employee for tax purposes.

Four new members joined this month. Another new member class will begin in November.

Calendar Review

We discussed whether to have a pledge commitment Sunday as in the past. Joann needs pledges in as soon as possible due to her upcoming surgery. We decided to add a brief commitment celebration to the service on Reformation Sunday.

Voices from the Holy Land Films

Anne needs to download some files to the church computer. We need more volunteers to help out. We may need extra chairs.

Worship Committee Report

The council unanimously approved the recommendation of the worship

committee that, beginning on the first Sunday of Advent, we will move to having one service at 9:30, followed by hospitality, followed by education. A special meeting will be held between services on November 5 to ask for the congregation’s approval. The worship committee will decide what format the single service will take.

Council Retreat

The council retreat will take place in the parlor on November 4 from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Phil Hirsch will lead us in a discussion of how to build connections in the community.

Property Report

The sewer pipe will be repaired this week.

Yard Sale

We were low on customers this year and probably need more publicity.

Pat asked for our assistance with moving some of the leftover items to her car.

Organist Search

Pat will set up a meeting of the search committee.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m. with the singing of the common doxology.

Respectfully submitted,

Marjorie McClain

CTS Council Secretary

Gathering for Home…

Home could be a small studio apartment, a large house, a cabin in the woods, an apartment at the top of a high rise…

Home could also be a motel room, a car, a tent, or a protected corner out of the wind and rain.

This month’s Gathering prep focus is home and homelessness. What is “home” to you? What is it that makes a place a home? What pops to mind when you hear the word “homeless”?

Youth Chili/Movie Night Friday, Nov 24 4:00 p.m., Mayer home

Come for a fun evening of chili making for the Chili Cook-off, followed by a movie and dinner. This time we’ll be watching Remember the Titans, a story of what it takes to be a community, to be a team

Gathering Prep Sunday, Dec. 17, 5:30 p.m.

Movie Night Christmas break, date TBD

This month’s session will focus on Home. More specifically, we’ll be looking at homelessness.

What are we up to? We’ve gotten back into the swing of Kairos and Koinonia (carved pumpkins in October).

Some of us are getting ready for the Gathering in Houston with monthly sessions.

School is keeping us busy with projects, soccer, music, and college applications.

Confirmation Retreat Session 1 Sunday, Nov 5, after church

Retreat Fri., Nov 10 – Sun., Nov 12; Mar-Lu Ridge

This fall we are studying The Lord’s Prayer. We will look at each petition and also look at different forms and versions of prayer. We will plan for a fun activity Saturday afternoon.

We’ll review logistics during Session 1. As always, parents should plan to be at Session 1; all confirmands are expected to be at Session 1 and the retreat.

Post-confirmation youth are welcome to join.

Two Blue Lines (99 minutes) NOVEMBER 5 Filmed over a period of 25 years, Two Blue Lines examines the human and political situation of the

Palestinian people from the years prior to the creation of Israel to the present day. This documentary

explores the passionate dispute among Israeli citizens about their government’s Occupation of

Palestine. It deftly splices together dueling creeds and the result is electrifying, because it’s a split so

rarely displayed on U.S. screens. Moderated discussion follows.

Where Should the Birds Fly (58 minutes) NOVEMBER 12 Made by Palestinians living the reality it is the story of Israel's years long siege of Gaza and its 2008-2009

attack, told through the eyes of two young women, 11-year-old Mona Samouni (whose family was killed

by Israeli rockets during Operation Cast Lead) and the filmmaker, Fida Qishta. The film will be followed by

a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

THE CHOICE, BY DR. EDITH EVA EGER

Recently, a powerful new memoir was recommended to me: The Choice by Dr. Edith Eva Eger. I received it, and finished it in record time! It is one of the most powerful works I have read in a long time. And it has deep meaning for all.

This work has immense value for us in this year when we recall the 70th anniversary of the Doctors’ Trial at Nuremberg.

A summary of the work is found below.

Dr. Eger is a Holocaust survivor. She was made to be Joseph Mengele’s ballerina at Auschwitz. And after the liberation, she came to the United States and become a psychologist. On faculty at UCSD, she has worked extensively over many years with Wounded Warriors, victimized women, and all others who have been victimized by hate and terror and discrimination. In our time, her national stature and her memoir are needed gifts.

You can check up on her book on Amazon at: https://www.amazon.com/Choice-Dr-Edith-Eva-Eger/dp/1501130781/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1505521318&sr=8-1

You can also watch Dr. Eger in a TedTalk at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0We7BNUILBA

We will be doing a powerful book review of her work for one of our very next editions of the Journal of Health and Human Experience.

I hope you have the chance to allow this wonderful Hero and her memoir to inspire you and all of our colleagues and friends to be real heroes ourselves for social justice, human rights, life, liberty, and the happiness of all human beings…. ALL of us without exception!

PS. And please note how Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the front cover endorser! WOW!!!!!

"Keeping the Dream Alive!" Summary:

A powerful, moving memoir – and a practical guide to healing – written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds.

Edith Eger was sixteen years old when the Nazis came to her hometown in Hungary and took her Jewish family to an interment center and then to Auschwitz. Her parents were sent to the gas chamber by Joseph Mengele soon after they arrived at the camp. Hours later Mengele demanded that Edie dance a waltz to “The Blue Danube” and rewarded her with a loaf of bread that she shared with her fellow prisoners. These women later helped save Edie’s life. Edie and her sister survived Auschwitz, were transferred to the Mauthausen and Gunskirchen camps in Austria, and managed to live until the American troops liberated the camps in 1945 and found Edie in a pile of dying bodies.

One of the few living Holocaust survivors to remember the horrors of the camps, Edie has chosen to forgive her captors and find joy in her life every day. Years after she was liberated from the concentration camps, Edie went back to college to study psychology. She combines her clinical knowledge and her own experiences with trauma to help others who have experienced painful events large and small. Dr. Eger has counseled veterans suffering from PTSD, women who were abused, and many others who learned that they too, can choose to forgive, find resilience, and move forward. She lectures frequently on the power of love and healing.

The Choice weaves Eger’s personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance. Eger’s story is an inspiration for everyone. And her message is powerful and important: “Your pain matters and is worth healing: you can choose to be joyful and free.” She is eighty-nine years old and still dancing.
