Heat a large Dutch oven overmedium-high heat. Remove

Pregnancy is an exciting time, from decorating the nursery toreading every parenting book available. The most importantthing expecting moms can do for themselves and their baby isto protect their health throughout pregnancy. Start by beingaware of what the science says about preventing common con-ditions that can emerge during pregnancy and about daily sup-plements that can support your baby’s development.Taking Folic AcidIf you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, it’s importantto take a daily vitamin that contains folic acid (0.4 to 0.8 mg).Folic acid is essential to your baby’s growing brain and to spinalcord development. Too little folic acid has been linked to seriousbirth defects, which occur in about six to seven out of every10,000 babies born. Ask your doctor which supplement is rightfor you.Monitoring Blood PressureOne of the most serious pregnancy conditions is pre-eclamp-sia. It’s associated with high blood pressure after 20 weeks ofpregnancy and can lead to life-threatening complications formoms and infants. It’s a leading cause of preterm delivery (whena baby is born too early) and low birth weight in the UnitedStates, accounting for nearly one in five preterm births. Yourdoctor will screen you for pre-eclampsia by measuring yourblood pressure throughout pregnancy. Fortunately, low-dose as-pirin (81 mg per day) can reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia forsome women at increased risk, so your doctor may suggest tak-ing a low-dose aspirin every day to help protect you and yourbaby. Talk to your doctor about any questions you have.Screening for Gestational DiabetesAnother health condition that can happen during pregnancy isgestational diabetes. Diabetes is a disease in which the bodydoesn’t make enough insulin (a hormone) or use it correctly.This means the body can’t turn starches or sugars from foodsand drinks into the energy it needs to function, and the buildupof sugar in the blood leads to complications throughout the body.About 6 percent of pregnant women develop gestational dia-betes, which can cause difficult delivery and an increased riskof diabetes later in life. Babies born to mothers with gestationaldiabetes may have low blood sugar, which can increase a baby’srisk of seizures and obesity later in childhood. Screening for thecondition is fairly easy. Testing is done during weeks 24 to 28of pregnancy, or earlier if there is a higher risk of gestational di-abetes due to obesity or a family history of diabetes. This simpletest consists of drinking 50 g of a sugary liquid and then meas-uring with a blood test to see how quickly your body gets rid ofit. Ask your doctor about when you should take this importanttest.Identifying Depression During or After PregnancySome women experience depression during or after preg-nancy—even if they didn’t have symptoms before getting preg-nant. If you feel persistent sadness, you aren’t alone. About 10percent of pregnant women experience major depressive

episodes and these episodes can continue after the baby arrives.Depression may affect the baby, too, because it can disrupt amom’s ability to care for herself and her newborn. The goodnews is that depression can be managed through treatments likebehavioral therapy, so check in with your doctor regularly abouthow you are feeling.Screening for InfectionsScreening for infections like HIV, hepatitis B, syphilis, gon-orrhea and chlamydia is another important part of caring foryourself and your baby during pregnancy. Some of these infec-tions don’t cause problems right away, which is why it’s impor-tant to get tested early. Treating these infections duringpregnancy will help reduce the chance that the infection will bepassed on to your baby and cause complications.

A simple blood test can be used to detect three different kindsof infections: HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis. The HIV test checksfor antibodies (disease-fighting proteins) that react specificallyto the virus. Women with HIV are given antiviral medicines thatgreatly reduce the likelihood of the baby getting HIV. Screeningfor the hepatitis B virus should happen during your first prenatalvisit and also involves a test that looks for certain antibodies.Infants born to mothers with the virus should get the hepatitisB vaccine and hepatitis B immune globulin (another disease-fighting protein) within 12 hours of birth to help prevent infec-tion. Similarly, the syphilis bacterium is found through a bloodtest and antibiotics treat infection in the mother and help preventinfections and serious birth defects in the baby.Screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea involves testing aurine sample or a swab from the vagina. If the test comes backpositive, both conditions can be treated with antibiotics.Talk to your doctor about these and other infections that canaffect your pregnancy.Recommendations to Protect You and Your Baby’s HealthThese recommendations were developed by the U.S. Preven-tive Services Task Force—an independent group of national ex-perts in prevention.
