Interview with Naomi Liston Dear Ladies, here we are another month closer to spring. I can’t wait, spring and summer are my favourite months in the year. When spring is ap-proaching, you can feel how everything wakes up: the nature, the people, and your body. Everyone is much happier. I think that March should be addressed as a motivation month. It brings every-one together, the days get longer, the sun comes out and you can see that many more people are happier being out on the street or in the gardens. People feel happier because the long lasting winter is almost gone. Spring brings this wonderful feeling that ev-erything can happen, new beginnings, new love, new opportunities, even miracles. This month, we went to Liverpool where we met four wonderful women. You can read all about them in this issue. Just wanted to say that this was my first time being in this wonderful city! Liv-erpool is a city and metropolitan bor-ough of Merseyside, England, United Kingdom along the eastern side of the

Mersey Estuary. It was founded as a borough in 1207 and was granted city status in 1880. In 2011, the population administered by Liverpool City Coun-cil was 466,415 and is at the centre of a wider urban area, the Liverpool City Region. Liverpool is noted for its rich architectural heritage and is home to many buildings regarded as amongst the greatest examples of their respec-tive styles in the world. It is also well known for its strong sporting identity. The city is the home of two Premier League football clubs, Liverpool F.C. and Everton F.C.. Every month, we encourage our read-ers to send in their inspiring stories so we can share them with our other readers. We are so happy to read that most of us have the same things going on in our lives and we can share and exchange ideas about how to deal with them. Many of you have shared such inspirational stories! I believe each and every one of our readers has a story to tell. Don’t be ashamed or afraid, send in your story and we will publish it so that it can inspire our readers. The For

Any Woman team would love to read your stories. They inspire and motivate us. If you have any ideas, stories, or you want to sponsor a giveaway con-test, feel free to contact me at [email protected] Have a wonderful new beginning this Spring!

The Top 5 Things ThaT inspire you? the sense of smell - I love perfume, it completely epito-mises what a woman is. I get excited walking through the fragrance department in stores and airport lounges.spirit - a woman always has spirit, she is fired up to suc-ceed and has the ability to multitask, which I am certain men can’t.Cosmetics - can transform you into whatever you want to be, there are so any different looks and styles.Childbirth inspires me - it is a gift, something special, dangerous and so extreme. It is a real privilege to have ex-perienced it and it is not to be taken for granted, ever.Women are always right, it’s our feminine privilege.

stantly trying to improve it and it is important not to be com-placent.

What inspires you? What is your strength that helps you to keep going? My children inspire me. I have never been given any help to start a business and had to face many personal and profession-al obstacles. I want to be able to give my children stability of a family business that they can take over and expand.

you are also organising the liverpool`s lifestyle award. how was this idea born and who do you sup-port or promote? The awards came about as a way of advertising Lifestyle maga-zine to a whole new audience. There are plenty of businesses

who don’t get the recognition they deserve and it made sense for us to give them a pat on the back. Plus, it’s a great excuse to get dressed up and have a glamorous night out - and net-work of course!

We think you are a great example for other women out there that everything is possible if you really want it. What would be your suggestion or tip to the faW readersTake risks. I have taken plen-ty. Some have paid off, some haven’t but if you don’t take risks you will always be aver-age.

Color that turns heads. Why are life vests, warning signs or police mark-ings orange? Because orange is the first thing we notice in a crowd! If any-one wants to be noticable as easy as possible, dress orange. In current fashion, orange is the new black. It’s a very universal color, al-most as universal as black. Only it has a completely different psychological message. If black clothing psycholog-ically protects. Thecolor is an intro-vert, it lets you disappear in a crowd and creates a sense of security, as if it’s saying this is my territory! Orange, on the other hand, is an extrovert, it speaks to you, even shouts! It’s hard to imagine someone dressed all or-ange apart from construction work-ers...Otherwise it would be too ex-treme. More or less orange color is what’s unique and fresh in current fashion. How much of it you want to include in your wardrobe is up to you.Orange fits well with a multitude of colors. If your wardrobe is already dominated by greys, browns and greens or even the same old black, then it’s safe to combine them with orange. It also fits well if you’re wear-ing a lot of blue denim. A little more risky, but stylish nonetheless is pur-ple and orange or hot pink and or-ange.

find your roots! This season’s fashion is all about discovering the world. Traveling through time and space. Far and wide. Noth-ing is unreachable and at the same time nothing is fully understandable. Mystique of the past and pragmatism of now. A mix of ethnic cultures. Clothes can utilize various ethnic themes: graphical pat-terns, ornaments, color gra-dients and floral motifs, or mix of style, decorative ele-ments and textures. Clothes with ethnic accents are very popular, be it manufactured, hand-made or a vintage dis-covery. Finding what you love will nevertheless your own personal journey.

Interview with Naomi Liston I see through you!One of spring season’s tenden-cies is transparent materials. At first, it doesn’t seem like anything new because we’ve seen it before. However, note that before, this kind of transparency was popu-lar in evening clothes. Now trans-parent materials have moved to other types of clothes (parkas, trench coats, sweatshirts, trou-sers, shorts), making them more appropriate for night clubs… a new evening clothes concept.

Interview with Naomi Liston myThs aBouT semi-permanenT eyelash exTensions

Author: Kintija Belska

Page 26: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

semi-permanent eyelash ex-tensions are one of the fast-est growing beauty treat-ments available in the world. Just in a matter of the last few years, they have become available in the majority of beauty salons across the planet earth. It is easily un-derstandable why this is so; they instantly enhance a cli-ent’s natural lashes and with that, completely change their whole appearance.

They are praised for their durabil-ity, realistic look and instant en-hancement, and many believe it is one of the best treatments out there. In short, a great quote from The Guardian explains their ef-fectiveness: “Want to ‘de-age’ your face? Well, ditch all thoughts of Botox and get your lashes done instead.”

26 ////

Page 27: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

foranywoman.com

Those who have had lash exten-sions done are probably nodding their heads right now in agree-ment. I myself have been applying lash extensions professionally for 6 years now and have come across just as many negative opinions as there are positive ones. Through years of working directly with man-ufacturers, students, lash techni-cians and clients, I would like to share my experience and unveil the myths about semi-permanent eyelash extensions.

MYTH:eyelash extensIons make yOur naTural lasHes fall OuTThis is one of the most widely be-lieved myths. So why does this myth still circulate? There are sev-eral reasons for that. First of all many people do not notice their natural lashes are constantly

shedding and renewing, which is an absolutely normal part of the eyelash lifecycle.

An eyelash has a finite life of 60-90 days. They are supposed to fall out. Since they are at different stages of the growth cycle, most people lose 1-3 natural lashes per day on average and never notice it because the lashes are so small. Properly applied eyelash exten-sions do not affect this natural growth cycle, but you may notice the shedding more than before because your lashes are darker and thicker with the extensions attached.

Another reason why this myth is still circulating is because quite of-ten lashes are not done properly and are put on by poorly trained technicians. In this situation they apply lash extensions that are

too heavy for the person’s natural lashes, or they glue several natu-ral lashes to one extension, which creates lumps of glue because of poor products and finally; they may improperly remove lash ex-tensions. All of these things can cause damage to client’s natural lashes. Always look out for prop-erly trained technicians and make sure they use reputable company products such as Sleek Lashes.

Besides the reasons above, there are more; client’s themselves often remove lash extensions improp-erly by pulling them out, cutting them or applying products pur-chased off the Internet for remov-al. Lash extensions should only be removed by highly qualified lash extensions technicians using re-mover that has been formulated for removing that particular type of adhesive.

Unveiling 5 myths about semi-permanent eyelash extensions

Page 28: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

28 ////

MYTH: When my eyelash exten-sIons Came out, my nat-ural lasHes Came WiTH themIn actuality, the reverse is happen-ing: when your natural lashes grow out, they take the extensions with them! If quality adhesive is used and proper techniques are prac-ticed, the eyelash extensions are designed to stay adhered to the natural lash until it grows out. If you are seeing eyelash extension shedding and your natural lash isn’t still attached to the extension, you are losing your extensions prematurely and should consider the quality of the products and the type of application used.

However, if you do see lashes com-ing out with many of your natural lashes attached or with lumps of glue, then this is a clear sign that

they have not been applied prop-erly and are causing your natural lashes to fall out prematurely.

MYTH: eyelash extensIons HurTProperly applied eyelash exten-sions should not hurt. If you feel your lash extensions rubbing or hurting your eyelids, most likely they have been applied too close to the skin or with lumps of ad-hesive. In fact, lashes should be applied 1-2 mm away from the eyelids and should never direct-ly touch the skin. If you feel your lash extensions hurting, then you should have them removed prop-erly.

MYTH: afTer i Had lasH exTen-siOns remOved, my naTu-ral lasHes Were sHOrT-

erProperly applied eyelash exten-sions do not affect the growth of natural lashes before, during or after application. Most people get used to how they look with their

eyelash extensions on, though. When their extensions are gone, their natural lashes seem so much smaller and thinner because they aren’t used to seeing them bare.

Page 29: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

foranywoman.com

It’s a case of perception overriding reality.

Many women agree that even ap-plying mascara in the morning, it makes their natural lashes appear much smaller after they remove it in the evening; and this is only af-ter a few hours of wear. Imagine having lash extensions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – it is a psy-chological shock once there are removed. If you actually measure or take a picture of your lashes before and after, you would find no change, and if they have been applied by a qualified technician, cared for correctly and removed professionally.

MYTH:yOu sHOuld Have “Breaks” every 3 mOnTHs TO leT yOur naTural lasHes reCOver

When lash extensions are applied and cared for properly, they do not affect the natural lash cycle and therefore there is no need to have breaks in between applica-tions. The natural lash “does not know” that there are extensions applied on it and it continues to grow as nature intended. Having said this, if client would like to have a break – then this is up to them entirely, but they should keep in mind that this is not necessarily for their natural lashes.

Always look for properly trained technicians who use quality prod-ucts for the best possible results. By Kintija Belska. Sleek Lashes Director/ International educator/ Celebrity lash stylist

Code Naturel (www.codena-turel.com) is a retailer of eco-friendly products of the highest quality with competitive prices to match. It is a family run busi-ness and managed from Aber-deenshire in the North East of Scotland. It has been almost a year since we engaged with our first sup-pliers for this project and here we are today, finally bringing it

all to fruition and launching our new and exciting environmen-tally friendly online shop! Some think that eco-friendly is an expensive way to buy things. Some think that upcycled and recycled products are very ro-bust and industrial looking. The truth is, eco-friendly does not have to be any of these things. It is a contemporary way of think-ing that can offer peace of mind when purchasing new products and, best of all, it needn’t be ex-pensive. We have worked hard to source products that are beau-tiful yet practical, durable, con-temporary and also affordable. We have chosen suppliers who support the idea of eco-friendli-ness and who love what they do. As a result, the products we sell are mainly handmade and pro-duced from natural or even re-cycled materials.

We are launching our online shop with two current collec-tions, namely Vintage Notebooks (http://www.codenaturel.com/gi f ts/41-smal l -v intage-note-

book-.html) and Upcycled Glass-ware (http://www.codenaturel.com/21-glassware).

let’s meet our second cover girl this month, beauty and fashion blogger helena Jane gomez. Helena comes from Wirral, merseyside. she studies business manage-ment and marketing at liv-erpool hope university and is happily married. helena has been interested in make-up and fashion since she was 15 years old. lately, helena has been a part of and had a chance to write about the london and liverpool fash-ion week. she was also able to interview the first celeb-rity for her blog: lydia-rose bright, an original the only Way is essex cast member.

helena, tell us a bit more about yourself. Where do you come from and what would you say you are?

I come from Wirral, which is right across the river from Liverpool where I study. I have lived here all of my life and enjoy how qui-et the town I currently live in is compared the big city! Although I would say that I am a city girl, deep down I love the quiet life. My favourite thing to do after a long day is to go home, take a relaxing lavender bubble bath and cuddle up on the sofa with my husband!

I love being around my family, which is quite a small one. This means that we have always been very close. I love to travel too, and hope to move to London after I complete my degree in 2015. Af-ter creating my blog in 2013, I have received many invites to lots of exciting fashion shows and events. Many of these are based in London, which means that I miss out on a lot of fantastic op-

portunities. I look forward to the possibility of moving very soon, though… look out London, here I come!

how did you decide to start your own blog?It all started when I was 15. I had just met my husband (Mario) and started watching beauty and fashion videos on YouTube. At

the time, I wanted to learn how to apply makeup in a more pro-fessional manner and learn how to dress nicer to impress him. It’s quite funny thinking back on it all now, but I am so happy that I did it! After watching the girls on You-Tube, I also started to read beau-ty and fashion blogs and thought, “Hey, I could do this too!” I remem-ber sitting down with Mario and writing down different blog title ideas. I must find the notepad as there were some hilarious ideas written down that night!

Afterwards, I decided to go with the title “New York Glamour.” To this day, I don’t understand why! This name stuck for a year or two. As I was not fully committed to blogging at the time, I finally made the decision to close down NYG and create an entire new blog. In February 2013, I chose the name

Beaut Chic and bought the do-main. Little did I know at that time how much my life would change within the year… I began to pho-tograph and write about fashion events which resulted in me being invited to London Fashion Week S/S14, Liverpool Fashion Week and Vogue’s Fashion Night Out. At the Vogue event, I was asked by Accessorize/Monsoon to at-tend their Manchester Arndale store and pick out a few of my fa-vourite items for their audience! I have also worked with so many reputable brands. These include; Bourjois, Superdry, Moroccan Oil and St. Tropez.

What are your favourite top-ics to blog about? If you visit my blog, you will see that everything I blog about is re-lated to beauty and fashion. I love to review skincare and make-up

products to provide my readers with my thoughts on the perfor-mance of each item. Regarding fashion, I write about the latest trends as well as the hottest local and national events.

you also study at the liver-pool university. Is it easy to combine studies and your blogging?

It definitely isn’t. A lot of people don’t realise that I often spend 6 hours straight doing blog work. This includes: web design im-provements, research, taking photographs, editing, responding to emails, etc. It is hard to balance everything as blogging is my pas-sion, but the university is very im-portant for my future as well. I am so lucky to have a great education and often have to remind myself of this and pull myself away from the blog. I have just taken a week off blogging, which was hard, but necessary for completing my uni-versity assignments.

Where would you like to be professionally in 5 years? My goals have changed so much over the past year. One minute, I was studying Music at college and the next I was working towards a degree in Business Manage-

ment and Marketing whilst run-ning my own blog. I would like to think that in 5 years, my blog will be on a more professional level. I would love to be the official blog-ger for London Fashion Week as well as being featured in or writ-ing for Elle and Vogue magazine. I would also love to write a beauty column for a newspaper at some

point over the next few years. What would be your sug-gestion for other ladies who would like to start blogging? What skills do they need?If you are looking to start up your own blog, choose to write about something you are passionate about. There are so many genres out there, which means that you don’t have to write about some-thing that does not generally ap-peal to you. Always make sure to take your own pictures as this gives a blog a more personal feel. If you use other peoples work, it is VERY important that you source each image. The best tip I can give is to be you at all times.

many women I work with tell me that they don’t have time for the breakfast or that they are not hungry in the morning.so they postpone the first meal of the day as long as possible because they’re con-vinced that once they start eating, they can’t stop.

The reason they can’t stop once they get going isn’t that they’ve eaten but whatthey’ve eaten.

If you just grab a bagel or a piece of fruit, it’s a simple carb that’s burned quickly, and you’re soon ravenous with a need to feed a glucose low.

This sets you up for a roller-coaster of blood-sugar highs and lows all day and makes you extremely vulnerable for stress crav-ings.

By eating a more complex break-fast soon after you get up, howev-er, your body actually remains sat-ed longer — and you’ll ultimately eat less, prevent stress eating and eventual weight gain.

Page 49: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

Make sure to eat a healthy breakfast no later than 9 a.m., even if it means placing a bowl of oatmeal on your dressing table to eat while you put on your makeup.try to include a balance of four items:

a slow-burning whole grain (oatmeal, muesli, whole-grain English muffin, quinoa ( linko De-Stress Diet: Quinoa Super-food Benefits), whole-grain cereal),

some protein (yogurt, low-fat milk, tofu with scrambled eggs, nut butter, fish, lean meat),healthy fat (almond butter, cashew butter, nuts, ground flaxseed, canola oil — found in some cereals),a fruit/vegetable (raisins, fro-

zen berries, grapefruit half, grilled vegetables, banana ).

Avoid two food categories that contain most “classic” Western breakfast foods:

Simple carbs (frozen waffle, pastry, muffins, sugary cereal, pancakes made with white flour, breakfast bars)Fatty foods high in saturat-ed fats (fried eggs and ba-con, cheesy omelets, bagels with cream cheese, fast-food breakfast sandwiches)

For an easy, sustaining, one-bowl solution, microwave plain oatmeal (not flavored) and low-fat milk with walnuts or almonds and dried fruit (apricots, dates, raisins, etc.). Add ground flaxseed and top with fresh berries, a little cinnamon, and you’re good to go. Even better: Make a batch to get you through a few days; refrigerate and heat up individual servings day by day.

or make a green juice.

try this green juice when you’re physically hungry and ready for breakfast and watch your en-

ergy soar and you won’t have to worry about packing on the kilos.

4-6 leaves of swiss chard3-4 stalks of celery1/4 cucumberhandful of parsleyhandful of spinach1/4 lemon1 apple1 carrot

Process everything through a juic-er and enjoy!

If you find yourself on a regular ba-sis not hungry in the morning, look for some behaviors such as eating late in a night. Breakfast indeed is the most important meal of a day, if you want to stop stress eating and maintain optimal weight and health.

you definitely have seen a lot of encouraging and inspira-tional quotes that empow-er you to do something you wouldn’t normally do, but getting out of your routine just takes so much work. Why is it so importat to get out of your comfort zone? Why do so many count ontheir cozy and warm comfort zone through-out their entire life?

Why is it important to get off of your secure and comfort-able sofa?A comfort zone is a behavioral space where your activities and behaviors fit a routine and pattern that minimizes stress and risk. It is all tested and checked, therefore you avoid unnecessary stress and you don’t have to think a lot of it, but you also avoid anything new and unexpected. If you do what you

have always done, you’ll get what you have always gotten (Tony Rob-bins). You have to push boundar-ies to get out of your comfort zone and overstep it, because only with it behind you can you reach your dreams and goals.

Why is it so hard? One of the biggest things that holds many of us back is our fear of what

people think. We are afraid to look weird, embarrassed or foolish. On the other hand, people are too busy thinking about themselves that this assumption should be put aside. Of course, it is easier to criticize than do some great things. Challenges cause additional stress, risks and anxiety—a space where our stress levels are slightly high-er than normal. That’s why some-times maximizing our performance doesn’t always create a result as good as expected.

What is hidden outside your comfort zone? All the best! As soon as you de-cide to make changes in your life, stepping out of your comfort zone, you can get everything you have dreamed on. You can increase your productivity, creativity and flexibility.

You’ll be more productive- •

Page 59: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

comfort kills productivity! Be-ing too comfortable won’t foster the desire and the am-bition you need to go after your dreams. If you know one very easy and safe way to do things, you won’t find another way. But how can you reach the best results in your work or daily routines if you don’t search for other ways, possi-

bilities, ways to develop and grow, or new solutions and ideas for existing tasks.

You’ll find it easier to brain-storm and harness your cre-ativity. If you open your mind for new ideas, people, chal-lenges, possibilities, we could say, you open a third eye. Your brain will start to accumulate before unknown thoughts and feelings. Cast away stereo-types and society’s opinion! See the world only through your personal point of view!

You’ll have an easier time deal-ing with new and unexpected changes. You will come more flexible and changes won’t scare you so much, because you know, that you are capa-ble to deal with difficulties.

You’ll find it easier to push your boundaries in the future. The more you step out of your comfort zone, the more con-fident you become. The first time, it will be hard- additional unexpected stress and risks will cause unnecessary anxiety, but as soon as you taste the fruits of your courage, you’ll be ready to challenge yourself again and again.

How to make the first steps? It’s important to remember there’s a difference between the kind of controlled anxiety we’re talking about and the very real anxiety that many people struggle with every day. Everyone’s com-fort zone is different, and what may expand your horizons may paralyze someone else. Remem-ber, optimal anxiety can bring out

your best, but too much is a bad thing

Face your fears and start with small steps. Make a plan with some smaller steps you can take to gradually lessen your discomfort. For example, if you have a fear of public speak-ing, start to perform in smaller groups- of family and friends. You can write a speech for

birthday parties or just simple gatherings. Learn it by heart and be sure about yourself. Express your opinion on work meetings or join some com-mittee. Every time it will be-come less stressful and finally it will come very naturally.

Do things differently. Make new recipes, look for another wine in the store, choose a different way back home, try new sports club. Include those “small experiences” on a daily basis. Big or small changes will bring you good results with new discoveries or some les-son for the future.

Believe in yourself. If you trust yourself, you are halfway there. The best way to believe in yourself is tobuild a strong support team- family, friends

andcolleagues. Concentrate on what you are doing; see the result in your mind and yourself on the highest step of winner pedestal.

Nourish your mind with posi-tive memories. Realise it can be fun to get out of your com-fort zone despite what your mind and feelings might be

telling you before you get start-ed. Think back to the previous times when you have broken out of your comfort zone. Fo-cus on the positive memories when you got out there and when you took a chance and it wasn’t so bad, it was actually fun and exciting and some-thing new to you.

Find an inspiration! Listen to different music, read books, magazines, blogs about vari-ous themes, speak with di-verse people (nationality, so-cial status, age, race), attend concerts, exhibitions- expand your horizons!

keep moving!Don’t stop after your first achieve-ments, you can do more! Every accomplishment is a victory- no matter how big or small. Challange

yourself, but don’t be too wreck-less, assess your every choice.

Push, push and push again to ex-pand your comfort zone!

meet our third cover girl this month, Claire nana seddon . she has a four year old son and is a single mother. she came to the uk in 2008 as a social work stu-dent and then went on to work in social services. she felt her creativity and en-trepreneur skills were not being utilised. she started her own urban hair fashion show in 2013, which has be-come one of the most popu-lar shows in the city. on the side she has been working on and will very soon open her “kWaTu” events man-agement company. let’s find out how Claire did it all and how challenging it has been for her. hi Claire, tell us a little bit about yourself. Who is

Claire namukolo seddon?I am a very enthusiastic and cre-ative woman, with a lot of ambi-tion. I thrive on pushing myself to the limits and learning about myself while doing just that.

how did you get started in fashion, hair, and events? I decided to go and study events management at Liverpool Com-munity college in 2011 and that was the start of my career. I worked in wedding shows, pro-duction and theatre shows ex-posing myself to all angles of events and production. After being offered an opportunity to work as a promotional model by Liverpool fashion week in 2012, I met the then director of mar-keting, Mr. Miles Dixon, who of-fered me work as a promotional model. I worked for the Leo Ca-sino Gala in Liverpool Exclusive

venues such as playground, sig-nature living and hotels. I then got offered to work at the MOBO Awards as a production assistant and promotional model in 2012. In 2013, I got my qualification in-troduction and events manage-ment and was accepted into Liv-erpool John Moore to study for my degree, but I took a risk and decided to learn the hard way (well I think it’s the easy way) on my own through putting myself out there. I was given opportu-nities to promote clubs, but my interest in fashion and hair was overwhelming. I had to come up with an event that will combine the two. you are a founder of the liverpool-urban hair-show. Where did the idea come from and why urban hair? The idea came from my love of

fashion and hair. I noticed hair stylists are not given enough rec-ognition as models in the beauty industry and no such event in Liverpool is dedicated to creative talent. The event is a fashion show like no other, the focus on the catwalk is on the hair and picking the winning hair style, awarding the hair stylist the winner trophy. Hairstylists can win great prizes for their work. The event launch was on the 4th of July at the Leo Casino Liverpool and the support was overwhelming. All proceeds were given to the Liverpool One Foundation Charity. I took a break after the event to rethink my strategy and this year, I am back launching my very own events management company KWATU Events Management Liverpool in November. I am also hosting this year’s Liverpool Urban Hair Show at Liverpool’s top celebrity hang

out, the Palm Sugar Lounge on the 5th of October 2014. liverpool is a large city and I would think that every pos-sible thing is going on out there. but you found you niche. are you the first one in liverpool who ever or-ganised shows like yours?I sure have found my niche. Liv-erpool being the city of fashion and style, the ladies take good care of their looks and hair is one of the top beauty regimes. I was amazed to find that no such event existed that gave qualified hair stylists a chance to entertain and highlight their skills in fash-ion events, without being stuck in the salon. The Liverpool Urban Hair Show is the only event that gives hairdressers recognition in the fashion and beauty indus-try, taking it to the runway. Who

would not like to have their hair styled by the winner of the show? I know I would. did you find it hard to start the show and your own busi-ness?It was very challenging, but the challenges are meant to be there to teach me something. I do fail a lot, maybe ten times, and then I try again and pass. I am very pa-tient and quick to learn from my errors. It helps to not take failure personal when planning an event or starting a company. If no one answers, knock on another door, someone is always bound to open. I also had great support from experienced friends to help me along the way. What was the most chal-lenging when you started your own business?

It is challenging to be different as people are slow to succumb to new ideas, faces or things. My energy and creativity can also be very overwhelming for people that are not on the same mind frame as me. It has been chal-lenging coming to a new country and telling people this is what I will do to entertain you and I will do it my way... Well they have been entertained. :)

Where do you get the pow-er and energy to do all you do?I have always been a believer of myself and I never play victim, I think that is what makes a strong woman. I want to leave my son with a successful family business. I take small steps and I am hard on myself. My strong qualities are the ability to wait patiently for my time, take risks and make bold

decisions. Half the time, people around me never get there, but when they do, I just smile. Being a woman is of more advantage to start a business in my opinion. We have the femininity, the strength and the ability to analyse things as women, all of these qualities and very useful in business. My advice to women: Never stop running towards your dreams, imagine you are being chased by a lion, would you stop? I know I would not.

What suggestion would you give to our readers who are just thinking about a great-er career or their own busi-ness?Go for it, start small, do a lot of research about your business and never give up as there will be thousands of opportunities to do so.

what matters.(e) I may say something, but I have definitely noted this and will discuss this with him in the next appraisal.

2. Cindy just started working for you and it is her first week. she has 2-3 years of previous experience in the area of ex-pertise. you have given her a task, but she comes back with some questions, which seems silly to you given her experience. you:

(a) Assume that she has no knowledge what so ever, and she is unable to work under su-pervision. Did we really need to employ her?

have you ever wondered what kind of boss you are? do you worry about what your employees think of you? maybe you worry that you are too friendly and your employees take advantage of that. or, maybe you worry that you are difficult to get along with and your employ-ees fear you. this little quiz will help you find out what kind of boss you are so you can examine yourself and be the best you possible. even if you aren’t the boss, this can still reveal valuable infor-mation that you can apply in your relationships, parent-ing, and daily life.

1. John has been working at your company for more than 1 year and you have noticed he is often late to work. This morning he is late again. What do you do?

(a) At the place where I am a manager, this never happens.(b) Oh well, this is John, but you know he is a good lad too!(c) At the moment, I am not too bothered because he ise help-ing me sort out my computer, but once he has finished I might have a word with Ann, who I am sure will report him.(d) Yes, I know he is late every morning, but I also know that he leaves later than everybody too. Always works hard, so that’s all

Page 73: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

(b) You know this is just normal, even after 20 years of experi-ence in this field, at every place things are done differently. You appreciate her being keen to get started.(c) You explain her little silly questions in a good manner, but while doing it, you try to get to know her a bit more to see where she fits in the office the most.(d) You help her without ques-tioning, but not long and soon you start talking about weekly shopping and other things. You tell her take things easy.(e) You shout at her that you have no time for such things, and give her a manual to read where she can find the answers to her questions. Afterwards, you pay a visit to her office to make sure she has read it.

3. It is Christmas and every-body is going out for a meal. one member of your team cannot go because she has a small child and has no baby-sitter.

(a) You ask your relative to help her, as you know next week she is going to work on your stuff.

(b) You smile and offer her bring the baby.

(c) You can only imagine how hard it is to be single and full time working mother. You pay for a babysitter with the com-pany’s credit card or arrange someone from your own family to look after the baby.(d) You don’t care if she has baby or not, everybody is com-ing, so must she. You give her a list a babysitters and expect her to make the arrangements.(e) Accept her apologies and leave as it is.

4. One of the projects has gone terribly wrong. you

hold a meeting to try to get to the bottom of what hap-pened. at the very start of the meeting, henry admits it was his fault and tries to ex-plain himself. you:

(a) Give him an angry look and remember this case for the fol-lowing two appraisals.(b) You could see the reasons why it went wrong and although you are not happy that Henry didn’t inform you earlier, you refocus on finding the best out-come of this situation.(c) You smile and say - Don’t worry mate, we will think of something!(d) Note this, but remain calm, you are happy somebody else is taking the blame.(e) This is unacceptable! You make sure he knows that this might be his last day at this work.

5. after you have solved the problem and the problematic project is finalised, it is clear that henry wasn’t alone to blame. you:

(a) Make significant amend-ment to your salary and bonus system. Staff should pay fines

Page 74: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

74 ////

for their faults!(b) Everything is fine and always has been!(c) It is good to work with Henry, since he always takes the blame, even it is partial!(d) This would not have hap-pened if I was doing the project alone.(e) You are a bit disappointed in some of your team mem-bers, since only Henry had the courage to admit his fault. As it comes to Henry, you know that you don’t have to say anything he has already learned the les-son.

score 0-5: The gamblerYou see your entire life as a game to play, so there is no surprise you use the same tactics at work. You come across as somebody very clever, smart, incredibly organ-ised and a good strategist, but af-ter one month or a little bit more, people realise that something isn’t quite right. Members of the staff get promoted for completely wrong reasons and work is distrib-uted unevenly. You clearly know the game is on, and yes people were correct the first time they met you – you are very clever, but for your own good only. You know which strings to pull and when to do it. If questions are asked, you know how to make your decisions

to look as they were made for all the best intentions and reasons. You love watching people being your puppets and falling for your manipulations, like in a game of chess, but remember the game

is not over until ‘Checkmate’ posi-tion is made. Although you enjoy outsmarting others, always con-sider that one day somebody can capture you without a way to re-move the threat. Try to re-think about the things you really value in your life, not so much about the game itself.

score 5-10: The general

You are very powerful and every-body secretly fears you. There are two types of general bosses. The first type concisely enjoys that people are afraid of her and sees herself as the pack leader, while second type doesn’t really think so much about it, but just doesn’t

know any other way to make oth-ers see her as the boss. Either way, you are sure that everything func-tions, work gets done on time, and you get your yearly bonus – what can be better? The problem is that everybody hates you, they want to see a little bit more understand-ing, a little a bit more positivity and a reason to stay on your team for a long time. The reality is that your management style is like a beau-tiful wedding cake that is rotten in the middle. While the work is done on time and at the best qual-ity, the people are unhappy and looking for the first opportunity to leave. Even you are not bothered about high rotation, sooner or lat-er you will end up with a team of ‘sharks’ who will try to hunt each other down. Is this something you really want to achieve? While fear is wonderful tool, try to put your-self in your teammates shoes. Re-consider your management style – good quality work and profitabil-ity is achievable in other ways too. Make them respect you, not hate you!

score 10-15: The lone wolfYou enjoy silence and being alone. You love working long hours by

yourself, in fact you are not a team player at all. You think that staff should know what they are doing without any supervision and sup-port from your side. Explaining something that takes more than 5 minutes, irritates you and some-times you just wish you could do everything without any help from others. If you only had a few more extra hours in a day, life would be so much easier! You work hard, and everyone knows it, but they are often left puzzled about your attitude to others. The truth is there is only 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, so you need your team. Although spending more time with your staff talking about work is not your thing, try to focus

Page 77: For Any Woman © - No.3 (8)

on the result – the better you ex-plain your vision on how you want to get things done, the greater your chances are that their work will meet your expectations.

score 15-20: The Best friend

You are very sociable and very un-derstanding. You don’t mind your staff turning up late, even it is a regular occurrence and you always enjoy having long coffee breaks. Everyone feels relaxed and things seem to be going great. Work is slowly getting done, although you have no real control over it. Col-leagues love you because of your personality, but hate the lack of

the organisation skills you have. Deadlines are often missed, but you are not too bothered by it. As long as the workplace seems to be happy, you are happy too. However, you really need to re-member that while it is fantastic to be friendly, you are also their boss. Your job is to organise and structure their work, ensure that everyone is treated equally and most importantly that the staff is not taking advantage of your good nature.

score 20-25: The Boss

If there is such a thing as ideal boss – you are! You see your staff weaknesses, but you see also their

strengths. You see in your team exactly the reasons why they make the best team for you. You know how to work with each of your team members individually to get the best outcome. There are times that you need to be strict, and you are not afraid to put your food down, however you don’t try to look for things to tell people off, instead you focus on encourage-ment. You are also a great mentor and strategist. Under your super-vision, things gets done on time and are of good quality, so you don’t need to make yourself look bigger than you are. In fact, you are so good that there is not much you can do to improve, however it is always good to keep your eyes wide open! While the majority of your staff loves or at least respects you for who you are, some people are driven by jealousy or just like to play games and can’t wait to take you down.

Yes, this can be devastating to re-ceive a standard letter from your dream place or company, saying “Thanks for your application….” basically meaning – Thanks, but no thanks! In this situation, many of us feel a bit sad, and start to question ourselves, what went wrong? Did I get too excited and rushed the application? Or did they just want someone with a higher degree or a different lev-el of experience? Every “what if” could be correct, but who knows for sure?

The truth is, no one will answer those questions and all you can do is keep positive and move ahead.

While it is good for you to reanal-yse what you could have done better, don’t let it make you bitter. Learn from it instead. Put it down as experience and refocus.

For opporTuniTies somewhere else. anD aFTer a Day or Two you mighT Be surpriseD how well everyThing Turns ouT.First of all, it is impossible to pre-dict in the working environment if something is really as good as it seemed to you when you first applied. Secondly, are you sure that it would offer everything you want? Last, but not least, the fact you lost out might have opened other doors to something even better.

Refocusing might give you time to understand the things you truly value in life. After all, if your dream place to work for really is still the place, you can try again when the opportunity arises and

then you will make sure that you are not going to lose out again!

meet our fourth cover girl, lesley murphy. lesley is a music tutor at the Wir-ral metro College and also a single mother of 2. With hard and persistent work, lesley has shown that any-thing can be done if you are willing to do so. she has be-come an inspiration to her students. one of her stu-dents, helena, wrote on her blog www.beautchic.com: I always remember feeling so comfortable around her, she has an amazing teaching style which I really admire. I thank her for my love of drums now and i definitely need to get back to playing! as well as being musically gifted and holding many qualifications, lesley is a mother of two... lucky kids eh?!

When did you realise you have love for music?I was brought up by my father, an aid music fan, from the age of six, and I believe this is what gave me my natural flair for music.

how did you get your start in music?During my time at school, I was a bit rebellious and this resulted in me being expelled from school with no qualifications at all and basically no hope. My passion was for music. I had no confi-dence, but decided to make an at-tempt when my mother thought it would be a good idea to join an arts based course at HOPE ST LMT LIVERPOOL. This course changed my life. It gave me a di-rection, and I learned there I had a natural ability to play drums.

When did you realise that you did notwant to keep music only as a hobby, but you want to earn money with it?

After many years of playing in bands, I realised that this skill alone would not bring money in for my son, whom at this time was a couple of weeks old. I de-

cided to take a music course, this then lead on to me studying for eight years to become a mu-sic lecturer.

how did you manage to study because at that time you had 2 young children and your youngest was just a few weeks old? I cant pretend that this wasn’t a tough time for me, my relation-ship at the time was not good, to say the least, and I had to walk away from it. I found myself alone, a single mother. I decided after a few weeks that I needed to carry on with my decision to become a teacher, and I went back to the university to complete my cer-tificate in education. This was a struggle at times, having to look after two children and be sitting up all night to complete essays. Since I had been studying this for

8 years my children, were used to it and have been a fantastic sup-port. The support from my father helped tremendously, I would not have been able to achieve all the things I have without him.

What was the most chal-lenging for you when you went back to the university to become a teacher?

“After many years of playing in bands, I realised that this skill alone would not bring money in for my son...”

The Top 5 Things ThaT inspire you? roger Waters (from the band pink floyd)- this is the person that helped me so much growing up, as the lyrics he wrote in his music made me feel like I was not alone, and someone felt the same way thatI did. he is my musical hero and such an amazing man in many ways, he’s revolutionary in everything he does. music is a great healer and communicator and that’s why I’m such an advocator for music as it really helps people identify with something. I don’t think that it’s necessary for all women to only find inspiration in female musicians as my musical heroes are male, and this shows that music is also sexless and that no mat-ter who you are, you can aspire to be like anyone you want to. roger Waters’ music is my religion and my home! kindness. kindness is something that inspires me when i hear of random acts of kindness and stories,my faith in humanity is restored. my dad. my dad raised me from the age of six and has taught me all I know. he’s the great-est, kindest person in the world and my biggest fan, and I’m his. my dad has been going through chemotherapy and he has been a true inspiration to me. he’s my best friend. helping other people. I believe in karma and that you get back what you give out. I have chosen to teach as i genuinely want to make a difference in people’s lives. it’s important that we try to do something with our time here on this earth and to be completely selfish is totally unfulfilling. also, we need to have a positive attitude as i believe that we can create our own misery or happiness by being negative or positive. positivity attracts more positiv-ity, and that’s the only way forward to being happy! being a mum, as I have two people that look to me as a moral guide and to help mould them into good people. my two children inspire me to be a better person for them!

It was challenging for me having a small child, some nights I’d have my foot on the baby rocker rock-ing my daughter to sleep, whilst sitting at the computer doing my work. It’s also not much fun liv-ing on just a student loan. I don’t feel like the Government helps single parents get back into edu-cation because there are no in-centives or help with child care. This is something that needs to be looked at in great detail so that many more people have the chance to pursuit their educa-tion.

When did you graduate from the university? I graduated last year and I have been teaching for many years now. The reason I teach is that music changes people’s lives, it changed mine and I want to pass that on to others.

Where do you work now? I work with Wirral Metro College that give me the opportunity to be able to teach young adults.I use music as a medium to build the confidence of the individuals and to set them up for any future venture they wish to pursuit.

What would you like to say to our readers?I would encourage any woman who is sitting at home and want-ing to go back to college to do it.It is never too late, and it is not as difficult as you think it will be if you have the passion and love for what you are doing. It will give you your identity back, although being a mother is our most im-portant job, we are entitled to be happy as that will only make us better parents and a bet-ter role model for our children. I was thrown out of school, had

no qualifications, and no hope. So like I have said, it is never too late, go for it!

“I would encourage any woman who is sitting at home and wanting to go back to college to do it...It is never too late ’’

The temperature on this “island of sunshine” as it is called by many, is an average of 18° Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit). So if your bags are already packed and standing be-side the front door, it is Malta where you’ll be greeted by won-derful weather conditions, even if you decide to go in March or April. Cheap plane tickets are avail-able, but last minute holidays are booked pretty fast. There are plenty of things to do on this island. You can get your cultural experience from the country’s capital city Valletta. Its wonderful architecture and long history will only bring colour to your “boring” days of pampering in the sun. Whichever place you choose to stay in, your holiday will be a dream-come-true. Oh, and the second official language of Malta is English.

If you’re looking for something more laid-back this spring, it is the capital city of Tuscany - Florence that comes to help. Don’t expect the weather to be very hot – you probably won’t get a bronze tan in March or April, but the weath-er is still very pleasant. You will have the chance to try some of the many Italian wines, which are considered one of the best in the world, while you relax surrounded by the stunning Tuscany land-scapes. Florence is also very rich on history. Take a walk around the city and it’ll be almost legit to say you’ve seen the whole country - Florence has gathered the spirit of Italy to perfection.
