Lucas woke up
And checked the date.
He whooped for joy,
“This is great!”
He]’d been training and waiting
For a whole long year,
And now the big car race
Was finally here!

Then He carefully checked out
The car that He loves.
Lucas put on his jumpsuit,
His helmet and gloves.
He got out his license,
With photo and name.
He was ready to ride
On the road to fame!

Lucas got in his car
And drove into town.
Soon he would be wearing
The winner’s crown!
Lucas revved his engine.
It was hard to wait
Until all of the cars
Pulled up to the gate.

LUCAS
Trevor was on his left,
Jason on his right.
The race cars were ready
To zoom out of sight.
Who would win the race?
The crowd wanted to know.
The flag went down—
Ready, Set, Go!
Lucas
The first time the cars
Zoomed ’round the track
Trevor was in front,
Lucas was in back.

Then Trevor shouted,
“Oh, no! Help me, Mama!”
For there on the track
Was a slow-moving llama!
Trevor swerved left
Straight into the pit.
Phew! That was close!
He just missed a hit.
All the other cars
Had made it around.
The llama was safe,
But she made a rude sound!
28
Then Jason took
The next turn too wide,
Skidded o the course
And crashed into the side.
Jason was stuck
With a broken radiator.
Lucas gave a wave and said,
“Sorry! See you later!”
28
But already Trevor was back on the track.
Lucas had to drive fast to fend o the attack.
As Lucas raced to the finish,
The crowd jumped up in the stands.
The cars neared the end. It was close, it was grand.
28
The Boston band played.
Lucas shook the hand
Of Trevor and Jason,
And waved to the stands.
