This directory, “Community and Economic Profiles for
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula” lists 2014 and 2015 county data
for each of the fifteen counties of the U.P. It showcases the
major exporters, the major employers, the educational
opportunities, and the cultural and recreational opportunities of
each county. 2014 and 2015 data is featured because 2016 data
is not finalized until June of 2017.
To monitor local economic conditions and trends

philanthropic
To discover cultural and recreational opportunities each
county provides

residents
Tawni Hunt Ferrarini, Ph.D., Sam M. Cohodas Professor at
Northern Michigan University (NMU), prepared this work in
tandem with the Eastern Upper Peninsula Planning and
Development Region, Central Upper Peninsula Planning and
Development and Western Upper Peninsula Planning Region.
Special thanks to Upper Peninsula Economic Development
Alliance for initially launching and providing administrative
support of this long-standing project.
Recognition goes out to Julie Curtis (2016 NMU B.S. Business

Baraga County, MI
Sometimes the best path to choose is not the easiest. In Baraga County that rings true again and again. But reaching
places such as Canyon Falls in the rugged and remote “Grand Canyon of Michigan” is worth a half of day of adventuring
to bring home a lifetime of memories. There are times when you want to spend your vacation in manmade resorts elbow-to-elbow
with people. And then there are other times when you want to go to the places that inspired those human-architected amusement
and waterparks. When you long for the real thing, pack your backpack or suitcase and come to Baraga County.

Gogebic County, MI
With its boundless, unspoiled wilderness sprinkled with expansive waterways, Gogebic County lets you unplug
from the ceaseless distractions of daily life. Located as far west as you can go in Michigan, it is within a few
hours drive of cities in northern Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, giving you and your family a perfect path to
reconnect with nature. This is your wilderness getaway. Escape to the Gogebic Iron Range that made iron mining so
important to this area. Lace up your boots and explore the million-acre Ottawa National Forest or enter the western gateway to
the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Because Gogebic County is within the Central Time Zone, you’ll have lots of
daylight to fit in all your adventuring.

Houghton County, MI
With the promise of work and fortune, thousands of Finnish and Cornish immigrants came to mine copper on the
Keweenaw Peninsula. You can immerse yourself in their and other cultures in Houghton County—and pursue
your own dreams across our land and waters. Thousands of years before European settlers arrived, ancient peoples
hunted, fished, and mined copper in the Keweenaw Peninsula. In the mid-1800s, thousands of dreams poured into the
pristine woods and coastlines to seek the precious mineral. Generations later, their spirit of adventure, desire for knowledge
and innovation, and joy in life are yours to experience all year in Houghton County.

Iron County, MI
Outdoor enthusiasts seeking the best nature offers can find it everywhere in Iron County. It’s hours of wholesome
fun for your whole family – a good “fresh air” experience for your children – and an easy time for your wallet. Why
spend a single day at an expensive theme park when you can spend the whole week here? With half of all property in
Iron County available for hunting and recreation, you are never far from your perfect outdoor spot. In fact, you can start
in town and be far away from everything in just a minute. Find fishing so plentiful that you couldn’t fish all of our locations in
an entire lifetime … golfing at George Young Recreational Complex… skiing at Ski Brule … plus this is a mecca for ORV and
ATV riders. Iron County is big on hosting events, too, from bucking broncos to massive fungi that will bring you back for more memories.

Keweenaw County, MI
Some places defy words to describe them. Keweenaw County is one of those. As far north as you can go in
Michigan, you’ll be rewarded for taking the time to get there with picturesque harbor towns, hauntingly
rugged coastlines and stories of our copper mining past that invigorate your spirit. This place stays in your
heart forever. Keweenaw County, located at the northernmost tip of Michigan, is where Lake Superior and the earth
live in breathtaking harmony. Since ancient times people have come here, drawn by the native copper whose lure in the mid-1800s
swelled the population by tens of thousands seeking their fortunes. You can relive memories of the Copper Rush in the county’s
ghost towns, exhibits at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park or guided tours at the Delaware Mine in Delaware.

Ontonagon County, MI
Often popular resort areas are crowded with people. Not here. At any given time, there are probably fewer
People vising Ontonagon County than living on a city block. This openness and quiet takes some getting used to,
but once you do, it cleanses you from life’s stresses. Whatever your interests are, from hiking to history, fishing to
hunting, snowshoeing to snowmobiling, or waterfall bagging to mining, you’ll refresh your inner spirit here. Ontonagon County
is home to the Porcupine Mountains, 1,200 miles of free-running streams and rivers, and pristine Lake Superior beaches. You can also
enjoy the mighty Lake Gogebic, plus dozens of smaller inland lakes and thousands of acres of virgin forest.

Marquette County, MI
Marquette County, located on the shores of Lake Superior, was founded on the iron ore industry. Hard
working employees today help sustain this multi-million-dollar industry. Historically built on growth in mining
and forest product industries, the county offers a diverse economic base, which includes enhanced technological
opportunities, a regional airport, a deep-water seaport, and expanded rail connectivity. All-seasons recreational
opportunities abound including a world class point-to-point mountain bike race and cross-country ski marathon.

Chippewa County, MI
Michigan was born in Chippewa County. But it’s not just historians who navigate here. People travel a few hours
from downstate or from across the world to discover things they can’t experience anywhere else… things here for
centuries that will be here for centuries more. Visit and make your own lasting memories. You’ll find so much to do
in Chippewa County, you’ll need to plan a return trip… or two! Soo Locks. Historic sites. Fishing. Golfing. Snowmobiling.
Three casinos. Drummond Island with its natural beauty and affordable activities. You’ll never run out of fun.

You will hear the thunderous water long before you reach the lookout that brings you within feet of the
Upper Tahquamenon Falls, the second-largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. The thousands of gallons
of water cascading over its 50-foot precipice every second will mesmerize you. When you come to the
U.P., locals will often suggest seeing the Upper Tahquamenon Falls State Park, feel the cool spray, watch rainbows
dance above the water… or visit when snow blankets the falls and listen to the ice crack. But these splendid falls are only
one of many reasons to stay here.

Mackinac County, MI
There are places that have a deep impact on your inner spirit. And whatever it is your first time or the
thousandth time to cross the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper or Lower Peninsula of Michigan, your heart will soar.
At 5 miles from end to end, it is the third-longest suspension bridge in the world. It is also the shortest distance to the
best of times. Ask anyone who has crossed the Straits of Mackinac, the body of water that separates Lake Michigan from Lake
Huron, and you will be told something mysterious will happen within you. As you enter the U.P. your heart will suddenly feel freer.
Adventurous. Happy. Cross the Straits… and stir your soul.
