Forest Enterprise ScotlandScotland’s National Forest Estate is managed on behalf of Scottish Ministers by Forest Enterprise Scotland (FES), an agency of Forestry Commission Scotland.

Our work is varied and goes far beyond what many people think of as traditional forestry. These days, you’re just as likely to find us protecting important habitats for some of Scotland’s rarest species or making it easier for visitors to enjoy the great outdoors.

Of course, sustainable timber production is still a big part of what we do. It creates many jobs and makes a significant contribution to Scotland’s economy. However, when Forest Enterprise Scotland’s Management Board sets strategic objectives for our ten Forest Districts, it’s also looking at the big picture.

By contributing to health and wellbeing, education and community development, and by protecting our natural and cultural heritage, our work has the potential to benefit every person in Scotland.

Our strategies

How we plan to get there is described in more detail in our strategy, ‘The role of Scotland’s National Forest Estate and strategic directions’, which sets out priorities and actions.

Our corporate plan details the key priorities we will focus on, and includes annual targets, budget and key performance indicator information.

Each Forest District also has its own district strategic plan.

The National Committee for Scotland’s role is:

k giving strategic direction to all of the Forestry Commission’s activities

in Scotland, on behalf of Scottish Ministers;

k approving drafts of corporate plans and annual reports;

k setting and monitoring the performance of

targets for the management of Scotland’s national forests;

k grant-aiding and regulating forestry

activities on other land;

k identifying the resources required to meet objectives and monitoring

financial performance;

k ensuring the safeguarding of resources through internal control systems; and,

k taking decisions on country-specific

developments, and drawing to the attention of the Board of Commissioners any issues

of which it needs to be aware for the proper discharge of its GB duties.

Our visionSo what will your forests look like in the future? We have six aspirations: that the land we manage is:
