PRINCIPAL REPORT Kindergarten 2019

Last week we welcomed new and returning families to the Forest Lodge community at the first Kindergarten transition morning. We had 45 new students participating in a range of activities in KF and KP. We received lots of positive feedback from the families and they were particularly impressed with our year 6 students who helped transition the students in to the room and support them during the morning. Thank you to FLASCA and the P&C for making themselves available and welcoming our 2019 cohort.

Feeling inspired!

Everyday I see amazing things happening at this school. Last week Jamilla Abdi, a year 5 student, demonstrated what an amazing community role model she is through her actions. Recently her Uncle was awarded a NSW Premier’s Prize for Science and Engineering. As part of his reward he was presented with a cheque for $5000 which he gave to Jamilla. Instead of keeping the money, Jamilla donated the $5000 to the school.

What an amazing role model! Thank you Jamilla and your family. We are very proud of you.

Halloween Disco

A big thank you to our school community learning and support group for organising a fantastic open event. I thoroughly enjoyed attending my first Halloween disco and meeting more families. Thank you to Codben and Hayson for sponsoring the evening and their on going support.

Forest Lodge Flyers

Continuing with community partnerships, the Forest Lodge Flyers will again be meeting at Jubilee Park at 6.30am on Friday. If you haven’t been before the running group is for all fitness levels and is designed for families to exercise together. It would great to see you there!

2019 BUDGET MEETING

Monday 19th November at 7pm

Classroom near Foss St gate

P&C Group Focus – Parents’ Learning Support

Where do I go if my child is struggling to learn?

This  is one of  the most  stressful questions  for  any parent.  I know, because while my eldest child found school unstressful, my youngest struggled. He had trouble early on ‐ struggling to hold his pencil, struggling to copy words from the board.

Eventually he was diagnosed with autism.  It helped  in a way, but my husband and  I still  felt very alone. At the end of that year, a few parents in the P&C suggested that we might form a group  ‐  a  group  of  parents  whose  kids  were  struggling  to learn. Some kids might have diagnoses, but plenty wouldn’t. It would be a space where we could come  together and share. We  could  talk  about  strategies  that we were  using  ‐  in  the classroom and outside. We could  learn  together about  these issues,  teach  each  other.  And we  could  talk  about  how we could help the school support kids like ours ‐ to be partners in their learning.

And beyond this, this group could help the school community build  a  greater  understanding  of  neurodiversity. Neurodiversity is the recognition that the differences between us not only  relate  to  issues  like our gender or  race, but  they also relate to our brains. And that while conditions like Autism and  ADHD  create  difficulties,  they  also  create  extraordinary strengths.

The  Learning  Support  group  was formed  in  February  2017.  Today about  16  families  are  on  an  email list,  and  a  couple  of  times  a  term we meet  face  to  face. We meet at different parents’ homes. Its casual. And every so often, at least once or twice  a  term,  we  meet  with  our principal  Stephen  to  talk  through ideas.

If you are interested in this space, or if you have a child who is struggling to learn ‐ you are not alone. Connect with us via the P&C  email,  come  to  a  meeting.  Together  we  can  make  a difference for our kids and we can also have greater strength as parents as we share and develop ideas together.

For more on neurodiversity ‐ this is a short explainer video that really helps: https://www.facebook.com/NowThisOpinions/videos/2050535798369867/  Amanda Tattersall

NSW Police Band visit to our school In Week 1 this term, the school was treated to a wonderful concert by the NSW Police Band.

Then our Stage Band had the fantastic opportunity to participate in a workshop with the Police Band. The workshop was a great experience for the Stage Band, with the police musicians sitting in with the kids and working together to make great music.

The FLPS Stage Band, and the NSW Police musicians working together

Training Band workshop that wasn’t… Sadly the Training Band workshop planned at Rozelle Public School this term was cancelled at very late notice. A real shame for everyone, but unfortunately something that was out of our control.

Stage 2 News This term Stage 2 students are building on the knowledge, skills and understandings from our Term 3 topics. In Term 3 we built up our knowledge and understanding of the suburb of Glebe and the N.S.W. town of Gulargambone. As part of our historical and geographical studies, we are examining the climate, the population demographics of both areas and the lifestyles of people living in the two locations. We will also be comparing the locations, looking at what has changed and what has stayed the same. This will form part of our focus on persuasive writing, building up our ability to write on a topic using persuasive language and arguments and evidence to support our ideas on topics such as “Glebe has experienced very little change”. Our classes are completing an in-depth study of the Jackie French novel “Walking the Boundaries”, allowing us to look at different times, environments and language as well as respond creatively and critically to a novel. In Mathematics, we are having a detailed focus on:

• the connection between fractions and decimals • addition and subtraction with money and decimals • division and multiplication • measuring time and understanding timetables • types of angles • understanding and interpreting maps and grids

In Science we continuing our unit “Smooth Moves”, looking at various forces including gravity and friction. In Visual Arts, we are challenging the students to create a mural design as part of a fictitious council proposal. After examining the many and varied murals Gulargambone features, students will be asked to design a mural depicting the many and changing faces of Glebe. This will form part of an exhibition and student voted competition later in the term. We are also continuing and completing our “Healthy Nutrition” unit on healthy eating and the importance of drinking water. We have commenced our AFL and Yoga sessions and are enjoying building upon our skills in both sports. Our Year 4 students will soon be heading off to camp and we hope they have a great time. Some selected Year 3 students will soon be going to swim school. We are looking forward to a fantastic Term 4 and hope to see you at different events throughout the term. Ms Dwyer, Mrs Everitt, and Mrs Fergusson
