PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN TANAC/TANAGRO AND WWF-BRAZIL
FORESTS OF THE ATLANTIC FOREST
What is the partnership about? The NGO WWF-Brazil and the company TANAC/TANAGRO joined together in a cooperation aimed at conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable use of the Atlantic Forest’s natural resources, one of the most important biomes of the world. The resulting project of the partnership is called “Forest management, conservation, and restoration in the Atlantic Forest biome”.
Why is it important?Forest plantations that are well managed help to preserve the biodiversity and meet human needs, contributing to a sustainable economic growth and locally sustainable means, with positive environmental and social impacts. WWF believes that forest plantations must contribute positively to the well-being of the communities and not substitute natural ecosystems.

Conservation and Restoration of the Atlantic Forest
Promoting good practices and concept of New Generations of Forest Plantations (NGP)
Market business and newly sustainable forest businesses
Launched in 2016, the partnership between the two organizations will last for three years and it started with a mapping process of priority areas of the Atlantic Forest conservation, located in 5 cities in the south region of Rio Grande do Sul, region of the company’s forest plantations and
geographical scope of the partnership. Based on these studies, opportunities are being created for the development of the actions, that include sharing of good practices and environmental conservation activities concerning the producers of Black Acacia for this main region.
Located in the center of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the Camaquã basin was chosen as the working priority area due to its ecological importance, the ecosystem services available and the presence of Black Acacia plantations. There are about 21.657 km² of extension, covering 28 cities with a total of 356 thousand inhabitants. From all this area, the ones that are considered
priorities were mapped, according to criteria, for instance: the performance of TANAC/TANAGRO, remaining of the Atlantic Forest and opportunities of joint actions with other institutions. Therefore, the selected cities for the partnership were: Encruzilhada do Sul, Amaral Ferrador, Canguçu, Cristal, and Camaquã. Altogether, it benefits about 150.000 people.

Besides the conservation of the regional biodiversity and the help to combat the climate changes, the partnership aims at the promotion of
the local economy, helping to ensure the provision of important ecosystem services for the Camaquã Basin’s actors and for the society in general.
Phase (2)Implementation of pilot projects in line with the actions of good practices and conservation that were identified in the process of participatory construction of the workshops held in Cristal and Camaquã.
There are two important phases: (1) Planning and Diagnosis and (2) Implementation of good practices and environmental conservation actions.
Phase 1 has already involved the following steps: • Region Socioeconomic Diagnosis;• A participatory mapping of the priority areas
for conservation;• Creation of 67 Territorial Initiatives of
different territory actors;• Identification of the Priority Ecosystem
Services: joint analysis with the company to identify the trends, risks and opportunities for the promotion of the actions that may minimize the company impacts and dependencies in relation to the identified priority ecosystem services;
• Identification of the Good Priority Agricultural Practices (BPA’s) for the company and independent producers of the project working area.
