CATCH CROP MIXTURES
Grass, whether as grazing or silage, is the mainstay for most livestock farms in the UK and the ability to manage and grow plentiful amounts of top quality grass has a significant influence on the efficiency, profitability and sustainability of the majority of those farms.
The UK has such a diverse landscape and indeed such a plethora of farming systems that choosing a grass seed mixture to suit your situation and your farm has never carried such importance.
Grass is without doubt the cheapest source of feed for the livestock farmer and with the correct management and utilisation through effective cutting, grazing and feeding strategies modern grass varieties can have a significant impact on farm profitability. Quite simply, home grown forage, the cornerstone of livestock farming has never been more important.
To maintain quality and productivity and take full advantage of all that modern grass breeding has to offer, it is vitally important to keep your swards young, in good health and able to deliver the results for your business when it matters.
Our ForFarmers Premier range of Grass Seeds 2015 has been formulated using the very best varieties available. Whether you require a high yielding conservation ley containing AdvancedTM Grasses, or a longer term ley containing high DNDF grasses to deliver more milk or meat per hectare or tonne of forage, you can be confident that our Premier Grass Seeds will deliver the results you are looking for.
Introduction 3
AdvancedTM Grasses4
Efficient grass utilisationClover and AdvancedTM Grass improve livestock production
The farmer’s answer to high prices of protein and nitrogen fertiliser is self-sufficiency – as much feed as possible needs to be produced on the farm. This will normally be a cheaper solution than buying concentrate and it removes some of the uncertainty in the fluctuating market prices for cereals, soya, etc. Grass and clover leys offer an opportunity to improve dairy and beef farming results and the combination of clover and AdvancedTM Grass is outstanding.
More than 2 tonnes protein per hectare. This will replace a similar amount of Soya protein which is subject to pricing pressures of the open market.
Up to 250 kg nitrogen for free. This can be utilised by the grasses in the field and it saves costs for bagged nitrogen.
Higher feed intake by animals. Typically the increase in intake is 10 - 20% for grazing animals and for silage similar figures can be achieved.
Higher summer production. White Clover and varieties of AdvancedTM Grass, such as Tall Fescue types, have higher mid-season production than Ryegrass.
Overcoming drought. Red Clover and AdvancedTM Grasses have very deep root systems and maintain production in dry periods.
Better crop rotation. A Legume grass field is beneficial in a rotation with cereals adding nitrogen and an improved soil structure.

Gromax6
GroMax BiostimulantBiostimulants do not offer the benefit of added nutrients; they simply assist the seedling’s ability to take advantage of the soil’s own inherent reserves of nutrient by stimulating the soil’s microflora, resulting in improved root growth and establishment.
Ingredient Summary
Humic Acids
Rich in auxin type substances which enhance antioxidant synthesis – important in increasing plant metabolism under stress conditions
Serve as an important high carbon food source for soil micro-organisms
Improve the permeability of cell-wall membranes in roots, allowing more rapid absorption of essential nutrients
Seaweed Extract
Contains high levels of cytokinins which promote cell division and lateral root growth and delay the ageing process of plant tissue
Stimulates root growth after damage by disease or root feeding insects, or under conditions of temperature, water or salt stress
Sucrose
Serves as a high energy food source for plant and soil micro-organisms
B Complex & K Vitamins
Act as important catalysts to enhance and drive plant metabolism. Vitamin B1 is widely used as a rooting aid
Amino acids
Form the building blocks of proteins - essential for plant growth and metabolism
Potassium
Plays a vital role in disease resistance and overall hardiness of grass plants
Following extensive research DLF-Trifolium is delighted to continue to offer the benefits of biostimulants to the ForageMax range.

Clover Blends8
Red and White Clover have very distinctive growth characteristics and behave very differently in the sward so it is important to consider why clover is being included and to select the most appropriate species.
The optimum soil pH for clover establishment is 6.0 – 6.5 and clover has a relatively high demand for both phosphate and potash to ensure good root development. Mixtures containing clover should be sown into a firm, fine seedbed and summer reseeds should be completed in time to allow plants to establish fully before the onset of winter.
Selection of the most appropriate companion grasses to suit the type of clover and the sward purpose is essential. Companion grasses need to complement the clover species in terms of their lifespan, sugar levels, growth habit and competitiveness.

Trials have shown that regular overseeding of young grass can prevent the usual decline in yield. So just as reseeding can revitalise the fortunes of a field, overseeding can help to maintain the high productivity of a new re-seed throughout the life of the sward.
Yield benefits of over 20% compared to control can be demonstrated when a new mixture is overseeded annually as a routine management. In trials yield benefits of over 40% have been achieved when Red Clover and Hybrid Ryegrass have been introduced to a non-clover sward.
The benefits of overseeding are worth over £1,000 per hectare every year in terms of improved animal output.
In essence, when overseeding using the popular wire tine method, trial results show that over 60% more plants can be successfully established using iSeed®50 rather than untreated seed.

INCREASED YIELD BY OVERSEEDING
iSeed®50 is not just about providing nutrients for better establishment as trials have also shown that the benefits can be seen well after the establishment period. Trials have also shown a 1t/ha increase in dry matter yield the year after establishment. The photograph below clearly demonstrates the positive effect of iSeed®50 compared to untreated seed in the year following establishment.

ForFarmers GOLD FR-g Silage Additive 23
GOLD FR-g is a unique silage additive, employing a three stage fermentation process to deliver exceptional silage. It comprises of an enzyme package, together with two strains of specifically selected bacteria to utilise the whole carbohydrate spectrum. The end result is an excellent fermentation, which in trials resulted in an additional 1.5 litres / cow / day versus control.
3 stage fast fermentation process
Utilises the whole carbohydrate spectrum (including NDF)
Effective in both wet and dry conditions (osmotic tolerance)
Effective in a wide range of Dry Matters (18-34%)
The effective preservation of grass, as silage, relies on the bacterial fermentation of sugar into lactic acid, preserving its value and minimising dry matter losses. However in UK conditions, sugar levels in grass can at times be relatively low, especially in early cut or late cut material or grass cut in dull weather. In these cases, the food source so essential for the bacteria to thrive and multiply is limited.
Specific enzymes are therefore added in GOLD FR-g to break down complex carbohydrates found in structural fibre (NDF), releasing them as additional fermentable sugars. These additional sugars can then be used as a food source by the bacteria, whilst the break down of the complex carbohydrates enhances ‘D’ value of the silage.
Two strains of bacteria are used in GOLD FR-g, working in relay, because a single strain of bacteria cannot operate across the whole pH spectrum from start to finish. Lactobacillus bacteria are largely ineffective above pH 5.5, and so GOLD FR-g also contains enterococcus bacteria which are effective in the higher pH range typically found in fresh grass ensuring a rapid and complete fermentation.
Stage 1 Initial sugar supply Enzymatic action on NDF (fibre energy release)
Stage 2 Specific enterococcus bacteria accelerate the initial fermentation to produce lactic acid
Stage 3 Lactobacillus bacteria complete the final fermentation building the lactic acid level until anaerobic conditions terminate the bacteria.Contact us for more information on our full range of silage additives
