Six HH-60 medevac Blackhawk helicopters from Team Medevac, an element of the division’s 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, took Disaster Medical Assistance Teams from Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan to hospitals in Arecibo, Mayagüez and Ponce, according to an Army news release. Team Medevac, which includes more than 70 personnel and eight HH-60 medevac Blackhawk helicopters, left Fort Campbell Wednesday, Sept. 27, on two C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft. After arriving later that day at José Aponte de la Torre Airport, in Ceiba, Soldiers from the team and airmen from the 22nd Airlift Squadron, 60th Air Mobility Wing and the 68th Airlift Squadron, 433rd Airlift Wing unloaded the helicopters. The Soldiers then conducted test flights on Thursday before conducting their first relief mission Friday. The medical teams include doctors, nurses, paramedics, emergency management technicians, safety workers and others. Buchanan, who is in command of DOD’s Hurricane Maria response and relief efforts in Puerto Rico, is leading the department’s efforts to establish aerial and sea- port nodes of debarkation throughout Puerto Rico so that FEMA, with DOD support, can flow resources throughout the commonwealth, Davis said. Buchanan is being assisted by his deputy, Army Brig. Gen. Richard C. Kim. DOD is also supporting the establishment of a medical support plan to best position medical support assets as they arrive in Puerto Rico, the spokesman said. Army Lt. Gen. Todd T. Semonite, Chief of Engi- neers and commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is in Puerto Rico overseeing temporary power installation, electrical distribu- tion repairs, infrastructure improvements and Guajataca Dam reinforcement, Davis said. Sixteen helicopters from Fort Bliss, Texas, will deploy to Puerto Rico Oct. 2-3 on a C-5 Galaxy air- craft strategic lift mission, the spokesman said.
