FORT WORTH CIVIL ENGINEER Fort Worth Branch ASCE Newsletter w fwacse.org w Vol. 3, No.2 w August 2007 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT The dog days of summer are upon us. Thankfully the weather is not as hot as last year and certainly not as dry. The rain is something all of civil engineers can appreciate, particularly when it creates problems and challenges for us to solve. August, the month we don’t hold a meeting, is also the harbinger that the end of the Branch year is just around the corner. The September meeting will be my last as your Branch president, where your new officers will be installed, and when I pass the gavel. We’ve had a great year and this was accomplished with a great team of people running the Branch. And fortunately for all of us, most of them will be back next year. What did we accomplish? We accomplished quite a lot when I look back on it. We had great monthly programs. This effort by Stephen Crawford was topped off with the roaring success of a Fort Worth/Dallas joint meeting attended by 367 people!!! The program about the new Cowboy Stadium within walking distance of the site really brought people to the plate. We had an active awards committee and historic committee. The DFW CIP Program was one of four semi-finalists for the ASCE National OPAL Award. There were monthly meeting minutes and a budget in the black. We hosted a continuing education seminar on ethics. We participated in Engineers Week with TSPE and with Jennifer Butcher as our Young Engineer of the Year. We held our bi-annual joint meeting with UTA. We completed the bylaw updates started last year and established a policy for job postings on our website. Our website sponsorships are up. We participated in the National ASCE Leadership Conference. Many people in our ranks have been working diligently all year long on the ASCE Texas Section Fall 2007 meeting that will be held in Fort Worth on October 4-6 at the Doral Hotel. It doesn’t get much better than this - go to great conference, show your friends the town and still sleep in your own bed. I’ll be there and hope you will be too. As I write this no one has replaced Scott Berman as the leader in the membership contest. I did hear from ASCE National last week and I have brought in two people this year. So gear up, come to the meetings and invite your co-workers. As my presidency comes to an end, I am thankful to all of you for allowing me this opportunity. I am eternally grateful to all the people who stepped up all year long in so many ways making us all successful in the end. Roxanne L. Pillar, P.E. FASCE Branch President

AsCe fort Worth Branch treasurer’s report July 2007

the fort Worth Branch of AsCe is happy to announce that as we wind down our fiscal year, we are still well in the black! our Branch currently has assets of $24,159.32. our Branch has a current checking account balance of $18,361.02. in addition to being a great dallas/fort Worth joint meeting, we also turned a slight profit. We have some outstanding events planned for the fall texas section meeting, which is fast approaching. As fort Worth will be the host of the fall 2007 texas section AsCe Conference, we have placed a $5,000 deposit down to secure the tesoro doral hotel for our conference location, and $500 to reserve the speedway Club at the texas motor speedway for our friday night dinner location. We also placed a deposit down for our tour of the speedway and pace car rides of 100 mph! We thoughtfully planned the pace car rides before dinner! As always our organization has many charitable plans for the remainder of the year. We hope to see our members at these events. thank you all for your continued support!

Scott Berman – Fort Worth Branch Treasurer, M. ASCE

2006-2007 Younger members’ Wrap-up

it was another year of strong participation from our Younger member’s. the happy hours have increased and we now have a strong 8-10 members at each of the monthly meetings. the events have been held at the fox and the hound, railhead, fred’s, Chimy’s, the Gingerman, and other local bars in fort Worth and Arlington.

We held our 2nd Annual rangers tailgating event in may. We had over 40 younger members and their families attend the event and actually watch the rangers win a game!

We helped volunteer with the fort Worth foster Children and assembled toys and our annual volunteering at the fort Worth Golden Gloves event.

We also held group golf lessons at the lockheed martin recreational Area. We had 14 younger members join the event. You should see them crush the ball now!

thanks to all who have participated over the past year and we look forward to next year’s upcoming events!

Upcoming programs for fort Worth Branch AsCe

September 17, 2007dr. Ken rainwater, texas tech Universitydiversity in American Groundwater management: lessons for texas

location – richland hills Church of Christtime – 11:45 am

there is much concern about groundwater management and depletion in texas. Groundwater owners prefer to maintain the status quo. existing management entities are inconsistent. some favor state control as with surface water. Change is coming…can texas learn from other states?

October 15, 2007md. sahadat hossain, ph.d., p.e. Assistant professordepartment of Civil and environmental engineeringthe University of texas at Arlingtonhigh resolution resistivity imaging for site investigations

location – richland hills Church of Christtime – 11:45 am

natural disasters due to failure of geo-structures present an important threat all over the world. each year, natural disasters due to geological phenomena cause significant damages in infrastructures and environments, as well as tragic losses of human lives around the world. the use of geophysical methods for the evaluations geohazard potential of a site is increasingly becoming popular all over the world. Geophysical methods have the possibility to give an “image” of the subsurface. dr. hossain’s presentation will focus on the benefits of utilizing high resolution resistivity (hrr) equipment for subsurface investigations and the evaluation of geohazard potentials for a given site.

two fort Worth Branch members Advance to fellow Grade

please join us in congratulating roxanne pillar, our Branch president, and mark perkins, our Vice president /secretary. Both have recently been elevated to fellow Grade within AsCe. Brief biographical sketches for both roxanne and mark appear in recent issues of AsCe’s national magazine, Civil Engineering.

AsCe fellows occupy the society’s second-highest membership grade, exceeded only by honorary members. there is no direct admission to the grade of fellow. fellow status must be attained by professional accomplishments via application and election by the membership Application review Committee (mArC). it is a prestigious honor held by fewer than 6% of AsCe members.

fellows are practitioners, educators, mentors, and most of all leaders. they have distinguished careers that have contributed significantly to the Civil engineering profession. the accomplishments of fellows have left their marks on their communities, society, and future engineering professionals.

Currently, active fellows around the world number nearly 6,300.

i-35 Bridge Collapse

in response to the catastrophic i-35W bridge collapse in minneapolis, AsCe is playing a significant and proactive role in providing authoritative information and technical expertise to the public on our nation’s infrastructure crisis. Although the cause of the collapse is unknown at this time, it appears the bridge failure may be another example of this crisis.

AsCe has assessed the state of our nation’s infrastructure through the report Card for America’s infrastructure and calls for public policy action to make our country safer and sustainable for future generations. AsCe’s infrastructure Action plan spells out steps the U.s. Congress should take to shore up our infrastructure. AsCe has worked closely with senators and their staffs in strong support of the national infrastructure improvement Act, s. 775, which was recently approved by the senate. AsCe will provide further resources and information related to the minneapolis bridge collapse at this Web page.

to post comments, visit the infrastructure blog page where members can share information and communicate with one another on new developments and related issues. AsCe and the civil engineering profession continue to play a key role in understanding and responding to natural and man-made disasters and in improving the state of our nation’s infrastructure.
