• There are more than 80 different ethnic groups with just as many

languages and over 200 dialects.

• The Ethiopian new year begins on 11 September (12 September in leap

years). It is roughly 7 and a half years behind the G.C.

• As with many equatorial countries, the sun dictates time in Ethiopia. The

sunrise marks the beginning of the day and the sunset marks the end of

the day.

• Ethiopia is the only country in Africa with its own unique script.

Historical Facts and Figures

• Ethiopia is a founding member of AU, the UN and League of Nations.

• A diplomatic capital of the continent - AU, UN-ECA, UNESCO and UNDP.

• Ethiopia fought against the Scramble for Africa, and it is one of the few

countries that were not colonized.

• It is home to 9 UNESCO World Heritage sites.

• About 70% of the mountains of Africa are in this country.

• The Danakil Depression in Ethiopia is the lowest point on Earth, Dallol, a

lava lake that is 380 feet (116 m) below sea level. It is also one of the only

lava lakes in the world and it is the hottest place on the planet.

• Abebe Bikila, an Ethiopian, won Africa’s first Olympic gold medal, in 1960.

• Ethiopia is one of the few countries mentioned in the Bible, the Quran, and

many other ancient books.

• It is also known as the Cradle of Mankind, with some of the earliest

archaeological findings. Lucy (3.5 million years old), the most famous fossils

found, were unearthed in Hadar.

• Italy was one of the first European countries to open diplomatic relations

with Ethiopia.

• The commitment can be easily understood in the light of historical and e

conomic links that bind the two countries.

• Development cooperation between Italy and Ethiopia started in 1976,

when the first bilateral agreement for development projects was signed.

• Priority sectors; Argo-industrial development, basic services, good govern

ance and migration, Cross cutting issues (Gender and nutrition).

• From half of the eighties, Ethiopia has been one of the priority countries

in the Italian Cooperation strategy, mainly through the bilateral and

multilateral channels.
