The 11th Havana Biennial (2012): The ultimate review
Where to eat in Havana - The ultimate guide
Havana’s Dining Revolution
The 11th Havana Art Biennial has been nothing short of spectacular. In addition to havingall the Cuban contemporary greats in one place at the tranquil Morro fortress we havebeen treated to Mendive’s bare naked ladies, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov’s ship of tolerance, the giant floating flower pot and the viscerally bucolic and incredibly bloody work byHermann Nitsch. While some could argue that previous Biennial’s may have somewhat lost their way, this month long exhibition of art and performances has undoubtedlyrestored this event to the first tier.
Perhaps it is something of a fool’s errand to try and rate, classify and describe Havana’sburgeoning restaurant scene. Every week somewhere new opens up, somewhere else isclosed down, no longer a staid platter of 10 good places to eat. We have spent monthschasing down the newest place, the best place and already we are behind the curve withnewer places continuing to sprout up. We will do our best to update this guide on a regularbasis and appreciate any feedback you may have ([email protected] please). Please see our note below about how we have classified places, we will adjust ratings anddescriptions in light of feedback and will try and correct any mistakes or omissions asquickly as possible. A special thanks to Piotr Loroch and Matteo Speranza who haveprovided many of the great photos featured of the different restaurants.
Amazing architecture, beautiful people, wonderful music, great beaches, fabulouscultural activities, shame about the food. Plain, boring, badly cooked. No tomatoes, nolettuce, no potatoes, no spices, no fresh fish. A piece of meat so hard you need achainsaw, rice over-cooked. Bread brittle and tough, the sandwich menu limited to ham and cheese or cheese and ham... Cigar Aficionado in its typically imperious mannerrefused to even contemplate the possibility of any good places to eat in Cuba’s capital citya few years ago. Now the times have changed….
