Readers Workshop

April is National Poetry Month! This month, students will read, write, and study various forms of poetry. Students will revisit many of the standards they worked on this year. In particular, they will make inferences while drawing on de-tails and examples from the text, quote accurately, determine the theme, sum-marize, and describe characters, settings, and events .

Writers Workshop

During April, students will write poetry. They will use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely. In addi-tion, students will develop and strengthen their writing by planning, revising, and editing. After editing and revising, students will select their favorite poems and create an anthology of poems.

Poem in Your Pocket Day– April 18, 2019

Poem in Your Pocket Day was initiated in April 2002 by the Office of the Mayor in New York City, in partner-ship with the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Ed-ucation. In 2008, The Academy of American Poets took the initiative to all fifty United States, encouraging indi-viduals around the county to participate. On this day, stu-dents will select a poem, carry it with them, and share it with others.

Fourth Grade April 2019

During April, students will review material in order to prepare for the New York State Math Exam. Students will use their Go Math book, the Ready Book, and iReady. Update on School Events and Activities Pennies for Patients Student Council organized our fundraising event for Pennies for Patients. Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 mil-lion school students throughout the country. The money raised is donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the fight against blood cancers. This year, we raised over $1,600! Congratulations to Class 505 for collecting the most money. They will receive a pizza party.

The NED Show Assembly On March 6th, the NED Show, a school-wide character education program, visited The Academy. NED is a loveable cartoon character whose name is an acronym for Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best.
