ReadingA series of leveled activities and resource materials exist to meet the varied needs of learners. Sample skills that are developed through these resources include:

– Various types of literature (Main and Paired Selections)

– Robust Vocabulary– Comprehension – Focus Skills – Fluency

Reading HomeworkAssignments will be given on an as-needed-basis to reinforce specific skills and concepts learned in class.

SQUIRT – To build comprehension skills and foster reading fluency, students are required to read at home at least 5 nights a week for a minimum of 15 minutes. The book log provided to your child will help to monitor student book selections and movement towards the goal of 25 chapter books by the end of the year.

Spelling HomeworkHomework will be distributed each Thursday or Friday. Students will select at least 3 activities in a row on their tic-tac-toe board to complete throughout the week and turn in by Thursday. Please sign the bottom of this sheet to verify your child completed the marked activities.

Feel free to cut the list off of the Tic-Tac-Toe homework to keep at home to prepare for the test on Friday.

In regard to Rule #4, if your child reports bullying behavior to you, please notify one of the following people at IES:•Teacher•Counselor•Principal

• Please also try to help your child know the difference between bullying and peer conflict.

• We are reminding the students to not “label” others as “bullies” since it is their BEHAVIOR which was inappropriate and can be adjusted/learned from.

• To help make the distinction between bullying and conflict, know that we are teaching students:– Bullying is when someone repeatedly and

on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself. Bullying can be direct or indirect. Direct includes hitting, teasing, name calling, etc. Indirect is rumors, exclusion, and cyber-bullying.
